2 Orlando Magic TD WATERHOUSE CENTRE QUICK FACTS / TD WATERHOUSE CENTRE Orlando Magic The TD Waterhouse Centre serves as home to the Orlando Magic of the NBA. In addition, it is home to the Orlando Predators of the Arena Football League, and various sporting and entertainment events. The TD Waterhouse Centre, originally named Orlando Arena, opened in The TD Waterhouse Centre is one of six facilities owned and operated by the City of Orlando all under the name of The Orlando Centroplex. The other five facilities include the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre, The Orlando Expo Centre, Tinker Field, Ben White Raceway and The Florida Citrus Bowl. From the historic opening-night emergence of the Orlando Magic onto the National Basketball Association scene - November 4, to the glitz and glamour of the 1992 NBA All-Star Weekend, the building has hosted many major sporting events. Since its opening, the TD Waterhouse Centre has played host to the 1995 NBA Finals, three IHL Turner Cup Finals championship series and the 1998 IHL All-Star Weekend, U.S Figure Skating Championship, three Arena Football Championships, NCAA Basketball Tournament games, McDonald s American Cup Gymnastic Championships and hundreds of world-class concerts and family shows. Officially opened by Billy Cosby in 1989, the TD Waterhouse Centre has hosted superstars such as the Backstreet Boys, Garth Brooks, Cher, Janet Jackson, Elton John, Bette Midler, George Strait and Tina Turner, just to name a few. Located in downtown Orlando, the TD Waterhouse Centre features curved walls made of more than 49,000 glass blocks, four corner nodes covered in imported red tiles, shiny terrazzo floors and beautifully landscaped grounds of Florida-style arrangements. 5 Orlando Magic NBA AND NBPA COLLECTIVE BARGAINING AGREEMENT The following is an outline of some of the principal economic terms of the collective bargaining agreement in principle between the NBA and the NBPA. A. TERM Six years plus NBA option for a seventh year (which was exercised) first three years without escrow and tax second three years with escrow and tax ( through ) NBA option for additional year with escrow and tax ( ) B. SALARY CAP 1. Salary Caps continue at 48% of Basketball Related Income (BRI) 2. The Salary Cap for the season is $43.87 million C. ESCROW AND TAX SYSTEM 1. Beginning with the season, player salaries will be reduced to the extent that total salaries and benefits exceed 55% of BRI, up to a maximum reduction of 10% of salaries and benefits. With the seventh year option being exercised, the escrow percentage will be 57%. 2. If total salaries and benefits exceed 63.3% of BRI, then any team whose team salary exceeds the team tax level will pay a dollar-for-dollar tax to the NBA equal to the amount of excess. The team tax level for the season was $54.6 million. D. SALARY CAP EXCEPTIONS 1. The Bird, Early Bird and Non-Bird exceptions will continue unchanged, subject to limits on high end contracts (described below). 2. The $1 Million Exception will continue, subject to the following changes: Increases by $100,000 each year of the agreement, so that in , the exception will be for $1.6 million; this exception cannot be used in consecutive years. 3. There will be a new Middle Class exception equal to: $4.903 million in Average player salary for the remainder of the agreement The Middle Class exception will be available every year (unlike the $1 Million exception, which is available every other year). E. ANNUAL SALARY INCREASES Bird Contracts may increase by up to 12.5%. Other contracts may increase up to 10%. F. MAXIMUM PLAYER SALARIES In the first year of a new contract, a player may receive the greater of 105% of the player s prior salary, or: 0-6 years of service: 25% of Salary Cap, but not less than $10.97 million for years of service: 30% of Salary Cap, but not less than $13.16 million for or more years of service: 35% of Salary Cap, but not less than $15.36 million for G. MINIMUM PLAYER SALARIES Minimum salaries will increase based on years of service so that, for example, players with five years of service will be paid a minimum of $500,000 in , increasing annually to $800,000 in Players with 10 or more years of service will be paid a minimum of $1 million in , increasing annually beginning in to $1.1 million in H. ROOKIE SALARY SCALE Beginning with players selected in the first round of the 1998 NBA Draft, the following rules will apply: 1. Initial rookie scale contracts will be for three years. 2. Teams will have an option for a fourth year, exercisable no later than the start of the player s third season. 3. If option is exercised, player is subject to right of first refusal following year four. I. MAXIMUM CONTRACT LENGTH Seven years for contracts signed with a team s own free agents. Six years for other contracts. J. OTHER a. Player early termination options will be allowed, but can take effect no earlier than after the fifth year of the player s contract. b. Sign-and-trade transactions will be allowed, but only for contracts of three years or longer. c. The Orlando Magic also received two awards for its Read to Achieve literacy program, the Award of Distinction from the State of Florida's Department of Education Commissioner's Business Recognition Award Program and the Image Award from the Florida Public Relations Association. Since launching its Read To Achieve Program in 2001, the Magic have donated 12,000 books to elementary schools and literary organizations and taken part in Read Aloud events and related school appearances for more than 5,000 area elementary students. Orlando Magic Community Relations programs annually impact an estimated 75,000 kids, while the Orlando Magic Youth Foundation has positively impacted more than 1 million children over the last 15 years. On an annual basis, Magic players log more than 200 community appearances to area schools, organizations and neighborhood centers. This past season, seven Magic players had ticket programs benefiting 100 at-risk youth per game. Season ticket highlights for include: 7,313 seats priced under $30 per game; $10 per game seats as season tickets for the fourth straight year; and the introduction of $16 per game season tickets. Season tickets range in price from $10 to $165 with 15 different price points. There are several ticket packages available, including family four-packs, half-season packages and group sales. According to Team Marketing Report, Orlando ranked 25th among the 29 NBA team in average season ticket price last year. Through television programming, the NBA is broadcast in 210 countries in 42 languages reaching more than 750 million households. On the home front, the Orlando Magic works with numerous tourist groups to help promote basketball for visitors to Orlando. Since its inception, the Orlando Magic has played on national television 140-plus times, generating hundreds of millions of impressions. Local, state, national and international media cover the Magic on a regular basis. Orlandomagic.com, the team s official web site, generates 1,500,000-plus impressions each month. Orlando has advanced to postseason play eight times over the last 11 years. The Magic has also finished with a.500 or better record in 11 of the last 12 seasons. Orlando advanced to the NBA Finals in just its sixth season of existence.
