2 SERIES VS. USC UPSATE First ever meeting. UNIVERSITY The Spartans are members of the Atlantic Sun where they were 13-5 on the season. Blaine Taylor ODU's All-Time Winningest Blaine Taylor became ODU's all-time winningest coach with the win over Northeastern on Jan. 5, He then joined the 200 win club at ODU with a win against George Mason, on Jan. 8, 2011 in the Constant Center. He is in 10 years (.666) at ODU, and in 17 yrs overall (.669). Atlantic Sun teams include: Belmont, Mercer, ETSU, North Florida, Florida Gulf Coast, Lipscomb, Jacksonville, Stetson and Kennesaw State. NCAA REBOUND HIGHS THIS YEAR 1. The Monarchs also had five overtime games with wins over Florida State, East Carolina, VCU and Clemson. Last year s CAA Champion Monarchs played no overtime contests. THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW Under Blaine Taylor, ODU is 5-3 vs. BIGEAST teams ODU had five sellouts and nine total home games with crowds of 8,000 or more to lead the CAA. ODU led the nation in rebound margin ODU has a (.721) record in the last seven years which is the most wins of any Virginia Division I team. ODU has won more CAA titles than any current league member. That same season, Division II ODU also played Indiana and Rice as part of the Kiwanis Classic. The Monarchs were 2-2. Overall ODU played in Scope from to compiling a (.709) record. The best season was and with 13-1 marks as well as 14-4 in The last time ODU played in Scope was Nov. 24th of 2001 in a win over Virginia Tech. They played the Rest of the home games in the old fieldhouse and opened the Ted Constant Center the following year. ODU ACADEMIC SUCCESS Old Dominion University student athletes excelled in the classroom during the 2011 fall semester, with 125 student athletes and 10 cheerleaders and dance team members earning Dean's List honors with a 3.4 grade point average or higher. Four Monarchs, Trian Iliadis, Donte Hill, Anton Larsen and Kent Bazemore were on the Dean s list. BATTLE FOR THE SILVER MACE Beginning this year there is a new tradition between ODU and William and Mary; two staples of the Colonial Athletic Association. During the athletic season of this historic rivalry will come to a pinnacle in the "Optima Health Challenge." Sponsored by Hampton Roads based Optima Health, the trophy will be presented annually to the school which accumulates the most points in head-to-head competitions in all sports. Along with the all sports challenge, the annual football contest will be the "Battle for the Silver Mace", with the winner presented a replica of the Norfolk Mace. The Mace is currently being held in the Chrysler Museum of Art, located in Downtown Norfolk. The Norfolk Mace was presented in the Norfolk Common Council by Royal Lt. Governor Robert Dinwiddle in 1754 to acknowledge that Norfolk was one of the most loyal provinces to King William. The Monarchs won the first meting in the now annual "Battle for the Silver Mace" in Williamsburg on Nov. 12th with a victory. Points Format: During the year, the CAA foes will face off 15 times, with each event being worth 10 points. The Monarchs and Tribe will compete head-to-head in football, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's swimming & diving, men's and women's tennis, field hockey, baseball, and women's lacrosse. With the potential of meeting also in CAA tournaments. The winner will be the first to reach 80 total points. Current score is: ODU (50), W&M (30) ODU VICTORIES M. Basketball, PLAYERS OF THE WEEK : Chris Cooper, Sr., F, Old Dominion Averaged 12.5 points and 9.3 rebounds in Old Dominion s 3-1 week. Recorded double-doubles in three of the four games, including 17 points and 12 boards in a 10-point loss to #2 Kentucky. Also had 13 points and 10 rebounds in a win over Howard and 10 points and 11 boards in a victory over LIU. Blocked seven shots and made six steals : Kent Bazemore, Old Dominion Averaged 21.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.0 steals in Old Dominion s 2-0 week. Scored a career-high 27 points and tied a career-high with 12 rebounds in ODU s overtime win at Delaware. Scored 9 of the Monarchs 11 points in overtime and hit the game-tying free throws with 2 seconds left in regulation to force overtime. Also contributed 16 points and four assists in a victory over Hofstra : Kent Bazemore, Old Dominion Averaged 25.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 3.0 steals in ODU's 2-0 week. Shot 60.6% from the floor (20-33) and was 4-of-9 (44.4%) from 3-point range. Contributed a team-high 23 points with eight rebounds and four steals in an win over UNCW and had a career-high 28 points, seven rebounds and four assists in a road win at Missouri State in BracketBusters.

TOP SEVEN ODU HOME ATTENDANCES , , , , , , ,756 HASSELL IN THE PROS Former ODU standout and CAA Tournament MVP Frank Hassell who helped lead the Monarchs to two straight CAA titles, two NCAA appearances and the 2009 CIT Championship currently on the Canton Charge roster of the NBA Developmental League. Hassell played for the San Antonio Spurs during pre-season but was Waived on Dec. 24, 2011.Hassell appeared in two preseason games, averaging 2.0 points and 1.5 rebounds in 10.0 minutes. The 6-9 Hassell completed his career at ODU as the school's 28th all-time scorer with 1,282 career points, 10th all-time rebounder with 909 and second all-time leader in career games played with 138. Last season, Hassell led ODU in scoring at 15.1, in rebounding, 9.4 and field goal percentage at.560. He had 15 double-doubles which is the eighth best all-time for a single season. ATHLETICS Old Dominion University s athletic program is among the most successful in the United States, boasting 32 team and individual national championships, including three in women s basketball, nine in field hockey, 15 in sailing, a men s basketball Division II title, three individual wrestling Division II national championships, and one women s tennis clay court national crown. The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics is home for Old Dominion University s 18 varsity programs for men and women.
