WVU advances following a 0-0 double-overtime draw against Rutgers, earned Nov. 16 in Morgantown. The Mountaineers trumped the Scarlet Knights, 3-0, in a penalty kick shootout. Currently, the Mountaineers are the second-winningest team in program history with an 80.0 win percentage/the 2002 team earned an 84.1 win percentage (18-3-1). Currently, the Mountaineers have earned the third-most wins in a season (16)/three squads finished with 18 wins , 2007, WVU is unbeaten in 13 of its last 14 matches; the Mountaineers posted a 7-1 mark in Big 12 play and own a record in all-time Big 12 regular-season matches. The Mountaineers earned their first Big 12 Championship title with a thrilling 1-0 victory over No. 6-seed Oklahoma State on Nov. 10, at Swope Soccer Village, in Kansas City, Mo. WVU has won three Big 12 titles in two seasons - back-to-back regular-season championships and the 2013 conference tournament title. WVU s 2013 Big 12 regular-season title is its fourth straight conference championship, as the team won the Big East Tournament in 2010 and 2011 before joining the Big 12 in VT earned one of the NCAA Tournament s four No. 1 seeds for the first time in program history. The Hokies have appeared in six straight NCAA Tournaments and advanced to the second round after defeating UMBC, 2-0, on Nov. 15 at Thompson Field. NCAA Tournament Second Round History WVU s 14 consecutive NCAA Championship appearances is the ninth-longest active streak in the nation. The Mountaineers are in all-time NCAA Tournament matches and at home. WVU is 5-7 away from Morgantown in NCAA Tournament matches and 3-5 in second-round appearances. The Mountaineers are 0-4 when meeting an opponent on its home field in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. WVU last appeared in the NCAA Tournament second round in 2010 and defeated Penn State, 2-1, in Morgantown. Seniors Frances Silva and Caroline Szwed are the only current Mountaineers to have played in the match. Silva and Kelsie Maloney are the only current, active Mountaineers to earn a point in the NCAA Tournament, as they connected on Silva s goal in WVU s 2-1 loss to Princeton in the first round of the 2012 NCAA Tournament on Nov. 10, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. In three NCAA Tournament matches, senior Sara Keane has made 13 saves and allowed only three goals. vs. Virginia Tech Friday s match is the second in three years between WVU and VT in the NCAA Tournament. The Hokies earned a 1-0 win in a first-round matchup in Morgantown on Nov. 12, 2011, also the squads last meeting. The Mountaineers own a 3-1 record against VT. 4 Mountaineers in the NCAA Tournament The Streak Continues The University women s soccer team has qualified for 14 straight NCAA Tournaments, the nation s ninth-longest active streak. Following the Mountaineers 0-0 double-overtime draw against Rutgers in the 2013 NCAA Championship first round on Nov. 16, WVU s all-time record in NCAA Tournament action stands at The Last Time Out WVU needed penalty kicks to move past Rutgers in the first round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament on Nov. 16, as the Mountaineers and the Scarlet Knights were locked in a 0-0 draw after 90 minutes of regular time and two 10-minute overtime periods. In the end, WVU earned a 3-0 edge in PKs and punched its ticket for the second round in front of a season-high crowd of 1,610 fans at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. Senior goalkeeper Sara Keane made seven saves for her fourth straight shutout and 10th clean sheet of the season. Keane remained steady in the face of RU s PKs, as the first went wide and she made saves on the final two. Saturday s result was WVU s first NCAA Tournament match decided by a penalty kick shootout. The Mountaineers are now 3-2 all-time in PK shootouts. WVU outshot RU, 26-17, and placed nine shots on-goal. Senior Frances Silva led all with a game-high seven shots. RU earned a 5-3 advantage in corners. Pack Your Bags - We re Moving On WVU advances to the NCAA Tournament second round for the first time since 2010 and the ninth time in program history. The Mountaineers were victorious in their last second-round appearance, defeating Penn State, 2-1, in Morgantown, on Nov. 14, Road Results The Mountaineers have competed in an NCAA Tournament match away from Morgantown 12 times and own a 5-7 all-time record. WVU s last NCAA Tournament road match was in 2010, and the Mountaineers suffered a 4-0 loss at Boston College on Nov. 19. The team s last road victory in the tournament came in The Mountaineers defeated Loyola (Md.), 2-0, in the first round, at Wake Forest s Spry Stadium, on Nov. 13, before falling, 3-0, to the No. 14 Demon Decons on Nov. 15. 5 5 Head Coach Nikki Izzo-Brown 18th season at WVU University of Rochester (1992) Named the first head coach of women s soccer in 1995 WVU has made 14 consecutive appearances in the NCAA Tournament under the guidance of Izzo- Brown Coached 12 players that have moved onto the professional ranks Fifteen Mountaineers have received All-America honors under Izzo-Brown s watch, and 11 others have garnered Academic All-America status Named to the Executive Sports Hall of Fame and the University of Rochester Athletic Hall of Fame The Izzo-Brown File - Year by Year 1995 Wesleyan Career Record (19 years) Quick Hits Career Benchmark In her 19th season as a head coach, Nikki Izzo-Brown eclipsed the 250-career victory mark with a 4-0 win over Central Michigan on Aug. 30 at Dick Dlesk Stadium in Morgantown. She led the Mountaineers to their 250th program victory with a 1-0 win over Baylor in the Big 12 Soccer Championship semifinals on Nov. 8. She has been named conference coach of the year on four occasions (2001, 2002, 2012, 2013) and regional coach of the year three times (2000, 2002, 2007). Scoring Silva Frances Silva, the unanimous Big 12 Conference Offensive Player of the Year selection, found the scoring touch in 2013, as the senior forward from Overland Park, Kan., has tallied at least one point in 18 of 22 matches. Silva has scored nine goals in the Mountaineers last 10 matches and has tallied a program single-season record 13 assists for 43 points (15 G, 13 A), the single-season record for a WVU senior. This is the first year she has reached double-figure totals in goals and assists. The 15 goals are a career single-season record and rank No. 4 in program history. She is tied with Ashley Banks (2007) for the senior single-season goal record. Silva ranks No. 1 in the Big 12 Conference in points, assists and goals; she ranks No. 7, No. 7 and No. 21 in the NCAA in the same categories. Silva shows 38 career goals and ranks No. 4 in the WVU record book; Chrissie Abbott ( ) holds the record at 53. With 98 career points, she ranks No. 4 in the record book. Abbot owns the record with 125 points. Silva s Touch vs. the Top 10 Over the course of her four-year career, Frances Silva has tallied six career goals against top-10 opponents, including scores vs. No. 1 North Carolina, No. 2 Penn State and No. 7 Duke this season. Silva also has scored against No. 1 Stanford (2012), No. 7 Oklahoma State (2012) and No. 8 Marquette (2011). Dishing it Out Frances Silva has set-up 13 of WVU s 47 goals this season, including three in the Mountaineers 4-1 win over Wright State on Sept. 22. The three assists matched a WVU single-game record and pushed her game point total to five (1 G, 3 A), the 12th-best single-game total in program history. Silva s 13 assists are a WVU single-season record and rank No. 7 nationally. Her assist total eclipses her previous season-best showing (4, 2011) by nine. Her career assist total stands at 22, and she ranks No. 7 in the record book. Hometown Performance Frances Silva used the hometown crowd to her advantage in Kansas City, scoring three goals, including two game-winners, in the Mountaineers 2013 Big 12 Soccer Championship run. The Overland Park, Kan., native opened the team s championship scoring in the 18th minute of the Mountaineers Nov. 6 match against Kansas, connecting on a free kick that gave WVU a lead it would never relinquish. She added her second goal eight minutes later, converting her third PK of the season. WVU won, 3-0. Silva netted the match s lone goal against Baylor on Nov. 8. After she was taken down from behind just outside the box, Silva converted on a free kick from 21-yards out in the 51st minute. She finished with a championship-best six points (3 G) and was named Offensive MVP. Championship Scoring Touch Frances Silva s three goals at the 2013 Big 12 Soccer Championship pushed her career goal total in conference championships to six, a WVU program record. Silva is the second Mountaineer to tally a goal in three different tournaments; Blake Miller ( ) also scored five goals in three tournaments. Chrissie Abbott ( ) also scored five goals, but in two tournaments.

6 Silva Shoots, Scores x 2 Frances Silva put forth her second two-goal performance of the season on Nov. 6, as she tallied the team s first two scores en route to a 3-0 win over Kansas in the Big 12 Soccer Championship quarterfinals. Silva scored off a free kick in the 18th minute and then connected on a penalty kick eight minutes later. It was the sixth two-goal performance of her career. Silva completed her first two-goal performance of the season on Oct. 4, as she notched both goals in WVU s 2-1 victory over Texas in Morgantown. She earned Disney Soccer/NSCAA and Big 12 Player of the Week honors for her four-point performance. Saving the Best For Last Taking her senior leadership role to heart, Frances Silva has been lights out in her fourth year at WVU, scoring 15 goals, a senior singleseason record, and adding 13 assists, a program best single-season mark. Silva s production level has steadily increased each season, peaking at 43 points through the first round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament. Forward Kate Schwindel complimented the offense of linemate Frances Silva, as the junior scored 11 goals this season, including five in eight Big 12 contests. The total ranks No. 3 in the Big 12 Conference, Before going down with a season-ending injury on Oct. 27, Schwindel netted her second golden goal of the season, as she scored in the 101st minute at Oklahoma on Oct. 25 to clinch the Mountaineers second straight Big 12 regular-season title. She previously netted the golden goal in WVU s 3-2 overtime victory against TCU in Morgantown on Oct. 13. Schwindel shows 26 goals for her career, the 10th-best total in program history. Her 11-goal output is a personal best single-season showing; she tallied nine in Additionally, her 28 points (11 G, 6 A) also are a career high. She ranks No. 3 in the conference in points. 6 Silva in the Record Book With one last NCAA Tournament run remaining in her career, senior forward Frances Silva has already etched her name throughout the WVU record book. 8 Big 12 Champions! The Mountaineers won their first Big 12 Soccer Championship title with a thrilling 1-0 victory over Oklahoma State on Nov. 10, at Swope Soccer Village, in Kansas City, Mo. Top-seeded WVU survived a first-half offensive storm from the sixth-seeded Cowgirls, with senior goalkeeper Sara Keane making five saves in the first 45 minutes; she went on to make a career-high nine stops. The title is the first for any WVU team at a Big 12 Conference championship. It is the program s fourth conference championship title and third in four years. Including its back-to-back Big 12 regular-season titles, WVU has secured three Big 12 championships in two seasons. A midfield free kick from redshirt-freshman Carly Black sparked WVU s chance in the 71st minute. She lofted the ball toward the far right post, and freshman midfielder Ashley Lawrence chased it down before sending a high kick just above the head and through the outstretched hands of OSU s Michaela Ongaro for the first game-winner of her WVU career. Keane s shutout was her third in as many games, ninth of the season and 26th of her career. Both teams registered 20 shots, with OSU earning a 9-4 advantage in shots on-goal. The Cowgirls also registered a 10-5 advantage in corner kicks. With the win, WVU earned the conference s automatic bid to the 2013 NCAA Championships. All-Tournament Recognition Following their 1-0 win over OSU in the Big 12 Soccer Championship Final, four Mountaineers garnered All-Big 12 Tournament Team honors, the first in program history. Senior forward Frances Silva was named the Offensive MVP, while freshman defender Kadeisha Buchanan was named Defensive MVP. Senior goalkeeper Sara Keane and freshman midfielder Ashley Lawrence also were named to the squad. The Big 12 s Best The Mountaineers swept the 2013 Big 12 Conference postseason awards, with Frances Silva earning the Offensive Player of the Year honor as a unanimous selection, while Kadeisha Buchanan was named the Defender and Newcomer of the Year. Coach Nikki Izzo-Brown earned her second straight Big 12 Coach of the Year honor. WVU is the first program to win the offensive and defensive player of the year awards in the same season. Prior to the defensive recognition s debut in 2007, only Colorado (2003) had swept the individual honors outright. Silva is the fifth Mountaineer to earn an offensive player of the year award and the first since Buchanan s defender of the year award is the second straight honor for a Mountaineer, as Bry McCarthy was honored in She is the team s fourth newcomer of the year honoree and first since Izzo-Brown s honor is the fourth of her career. Silva, Buchanan, Kate Schwindel and Ashley Lawrence were named to the All-Big 12 First Team, while Amanda Hill was named to the second team. WVU s sweep marked the first time a team won all three honors since Missouri did so in Forward Frances Silva, Schwindel and Keane show two honors each this year. Shutout Keane Senior Sara Keane has posted 10 shutouts in 2013, the third-best mark in the Big 12, and the four-best single-season showing for a Mountaineer. She has not allowed a goal in the month of November and has recorded four straight clean sheets. Most recently, Keane made seven saves in WVU s 0-0 doubleovertime draw against Rutgers in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Nov. 16. She was huge in the penalty kick shootout, blanking RU and helping the Mountaineers advance with a 3-0 edge in PKs. In the last two games, she has made a combined 16 saves. Keane shows 66 saves this season, the fifth-best conference total and ninth-best WVU single-season mark. She owns a.742 save percentage. With 27 career shutouts, she ranks No. 3 in program history. Keane Saves Best for Last Senior Sara Keane was spectacular in the Mountaineers 1-0 win over Oklahoma State in the Big 12 Soccer Championship finale on Nov. 10, making a career-best nine saves for the 26th shutout of her career. She opened the season with eight saves at No. 2 Penn State on Aug. 23. Keane tallied eight stops twice in 2012, against No. 6 Penn State and No. 20 Baylor, and once in 2011 at Pitt. Magnificent Maloney Sophomore forward Kelsie Maloney has tallied four gamewinners this season, including two in Big 12 play. Most recently, she scored the game-winner in WVU s 2-0 victory over Kansas on Oct. 18, her sixth goal of the season. Maloney also tallied the second goal in the 2-1 win at Oklahoma State on Sept. 27. Maloney ranks second in the Big 12 in game-winners and sixth in points with 16 (6 G, 4 A). Her six goals, the third-best Mountaineer showing, rank sixth in the Big 12. The Price is Right Sophomore defender Cari Price has tallied four goals this season, including three at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. The scores are the first of her career. Price s latest was her biggest yet, as she netted the game-winner in the Mountaineers 4-3 victory at then-no. 9 Baylor on Sept. 29. Her header shut the door on a BU offensive attack that gained momentum in the closing minutes of the second period. She shows 12 points (4 G, 4 A) for the season and ranks fourth on the team. 10 National Respect WVU s top point earners garned national recogntion this year. Kate Schwindel was named TopDrawerSoccer.com s Player of the Week on Oct. 15. She also was named to the Women s Team of the Week, her second distinction in 14 days. Additionally, Frances Silva was named the Disney Soccer/NSCAA Player of the Week on Oct. 8, her second career honor. Home Sweet Home The Mountaineers have developed a true home field advantage, going at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium since its opening in August Including its 4-0 showing this season, WVU has not dropped a match to a conference opponent in Morgantown since losing 3-2 in overtime to then-no. 8 Notre Dame on Oct. 2, WVU has set three DDSS attendance records in A season-high 1,610 fans were in attendance for WVU s thrilling NCAA Tournament first round match against Rutgers on Nov. 16, the fifth-best showing in program history. There were 1,553 fans attendance on Oct. 4 to watch the Mountaineers earn a 2-1 win over Texas. The mark ranks sixth all-time. WVU opened its home season on Aug. 30 against Central Michigan in front of 1,310 fans, the 13th-best mark. Over the past five seasons, more than 52,000 fans have packed the stands to make DDSS one of the toughest environments in the Big 12. First-Time Foes WVU faced four new opponents this fall and finished with a record. 11 Top of the Class Frances Silva was named one of 30 candidates for the 2013 Senior CLASS Award. She is the first WVU women s soccer student-athlete to earn the distinction. Silva graduated in three years with a bachelor s degree in broadcast journalism while maintaining a 3.97 cumulative grade point average. In 2013, she received the Dr. Gerald Lage award, the highest academic honor given by the Big 12 Conference, and the Jerry P. Wilkins Scholarship from WVU. She is currently pursuing a master s degree in sport management. The Senior CLASS Award recognizes student-athletes that have excelled in four areas - classroom, character, community and competition. Silva was one of two candidates from the Big 12 Conference (Kat Ludlow, BU). Fantastic Freshmen Among coach Nikki Izzo-Brown s freshman class is Canadian National Team member Kadeisha Buchanan. Buchanan came to Morgantown after competing with the Canada U20 team in Denmark in July. Fellow Canadian Ashley Lawrence was named to the Canadian U20 team but did not make the trip to Denmark. Bryce Banuelos came to Morgantown after claiming the 2013 U18 U.S. Youth Soccer National Championship with Team Chicago Academy-Botafogo. Banuelos and company defeated fellow Mountaineer freshman Daniela Neves and the Virginia Heat Blue, 2-1, in overtime for the title. Challenging Competition The 2013 women s soccer schedule was a grueling one, as the squad faced seven teams that appeared in the 2012 NCAA Tournament Baylor, Central Michigan, Duke, Kentucky, North Carolina, Penn State and Texas Tech. Battle to a Draw WVU opened its 2013 campaign with a 2-2 draw at No. 2 Penn State, the 2012 national runners-up, on Aug. 23. Frances Silva gave the Mountaineers an early 1-0 lead after connecting on a cross from Kelsie Maloney in the fifth minute. Maloney extended WVU s lead in the 70th minute on a header from Ashley Lawrence. The Nittany Lions came back late in the game, netting two goals within 72 seconds in the 81st and 82nd minutes. The game ended in a 2-2 tie, the first draw in the series between the two programs. WVU also opened its 2010 season with an overtime game, losing 2-1 in the first OT period to PSU in Morgantown. WVU last opened a season with a draw in 2009, as the Mountaineers played to a 0-0 result with Ohio State on Aug. 23, in Morgantown. Big 12 Soccer WVU is in its second season as a member of the Big 12 Conference. WVU women s soccer adds to the competiveness of the league, bringing 14 consecutive NCAA appearances on its resume more than any other league team. The Big 12 has advanced at least two teams to the second round of the NCAA Championship and at least one squad to the third round in 15 of the league s 17 seasons. Twenty of the team s 34 goals came from the forward duo of Frances Silva (11) and Kate Schwindel (9). Returning Defenders Sara Keane returned after registering 17 shutouts over the past two seasons. Center back Leah Emaus and outside back Jess Crowder also returned both first-time starters a year ago Preseason Big 12 Poll and Preseason All-Big 12 Team WVU was tabbed the top squad in the 2013 Big 12 Preseason Poll.
