1 2008 SEASON IN REVIEW Season Highlights A remarkably well-balanced offense, featuring five double-figure point-scorers and 13 different goal scorers, and a smothering defense propelled Navy to its third unbeaten league mark in program history (5-0-2) and its seventh Patriot League regular-season title (third outright) since the 1998 season. The Mids closed out the season with a mark, good for a 75.0 winning percentage - the fifth highest in program history and the 22nd best clip nationally. Navy reached double-figure wins and produced a winning record for the 14th consecutive year. During this span, the Mids are in exclusive company as one of only 10 Division I teams to have won 10 or more games in every season. After alternating wins and losses through its first four games, Navy produced a mark in its next 16 contests, including an 11-game unbeaten streak (9-0-2) to close out the regular season. The Mids posted nine shutouts during this season-ending stretch, while outscoring its opponents by a decisive 23-3 margin. Navy made its third consecutive Patriot League postseason tournament appearance and 12th in its 15 years of league membership. 2 Balanced Attack After losing its top-two scorers from 2007, the Navy offense received contributions from its almost entire roster on its way to boasting the Patriot League's most potent attack, scoring 1.77 goals per game. The Mids produced five double-figure point-scorers (Calderon, Laraway, Moeller, White, Youker) and 21 different players with at least a point... a total of eight Navy players either met or surpassed previous careerbest point totals in An explosive offensive talent, second-team league all-star Kristen Laraway made the most of her final collegiate season, pacing the Mids with 17 points on a career-high six goals and five assists. Sophomore Carissa Youker booted in a team-leading seven goals, including five game-winners... Her seven goals ranked as the fourth-most in the conference, while her five game-deciding tallies tied for the sixthbest single-season mark in school history Youker finished second on the team with 16 points (7 g, 2 a) on her way to earning second-team all-league kudos. Driving Navy s success in the upper-third was the terrific rapport between Carissa Youker and classmate Christine Calderon... after the duo joined the starting- 11 midway through the season, Calderon factored in on four of Youker s goals, including three game-winners during a 10-game stretch from Sept. 12-Oct. 12 where Navy won 9 of 10 games, the duo put up 24 points (8 g, 8 a) and produced five game-winners. Sophomore Christine Calderon emerged as the Midshipmen s primary table-setter... the second-year forward led Navy and ranked second in the Patriot League with seven assists... she added a pair of goals to finish the year with a career-best 11 points. Barnes Raises the Bar Goalkeeper Lizzie Barnes put the finishing touches on her decorated four-year career with the Blue and Gold in 2008 and not only left her mark as one of the top Navy players all-time at her position, but also as one of the most accomplished student athletes in the history of the Patriot League. On the field, her exploits set an impressive standard, as she left Annapolis as the Navy and Patriot League career leader in goals-against average (0.65) - the 20th-lowest career GAA in NCAA history. In 2008, Barnes ranked among the national leaders in both save percentage (19th) and GAA (22nd) and posted eight solo shutouts to finish her career as the MIds all-time leader with 29. In her three years as a starter, Navy posted a (.782) record with 42 shutouts. Off the field, Barnes achievements were second to none. In 2008, Barnes joined a select 12-member group of Naval Academy student-athletes who have earned multiple Academic All-America certificates in a career, garnering first-team laurels for the second time in her career. She is one of just three Midshipmen, including former great Nicole Aunapu ('99), to twice have garnered first-team laurels. Moreover, Barnes, who posted a 3.90 cumulative GPA and graduated 15th in Overall Order of Merit in the Academy s Class of 2009, also earned the Patriot League s top academic honor, its Female Scholar- Athlete of the Year award. She is the third Navy women's soccer player to earn the laurel in the 18 years of the award - the most of any league program. Memorable Games of 2008 Aug Navy 2, UC Davis 1 (OT) Junior stalwart Shelly Moeller headed in a free-kick from teammate Kristen Laraway in the 94th minute to cap a thrilling late-game comeback and give Navy a 2-1 overtime win at UC Davis. Senior keeper Lizzie Barnes played terrifically, tying a career-high with 10 saves, and classmate Sam Schroth netted the equalizer in the 71st minute to force the extra period and set the stage for Moeller's heroics. Oct. 4 - Navy 1, Bucknell 0 (OT) Kristen Laraway s penchant for big-game heroics was once again on display as Navy s senior forward drove home a picture-perfect blast from 20 yards out to lift the Mids to an exhilarating 1-0 overtime win over visiting Bucknell. With the win, Carin Gabarra joined an elite group of coaches with 200 career wins. The victory also proved to be the deciding factor in the final regular season standings as the Mids and Bison went 1-2, with just two-points separating the teams. Oct Navy 3, Holy Cross 2 (2OT) Sophomore Anastasia Abid put home a rebound in the 107th minute to lift the Mids to a 3-2 double overtime victory at Holy Cross. The win gave Navy control of its own destiny and paved the way for the team to capture its seventh regular season title since the 1998 season. The rare high-scoring affair saw Navy allow two firsthalf goals - the only two goals the Mids allowed against a conference foe during the 2008 regular season. The contest also saw back-up keeper Beth Reed deliver a huge effort off the bench, making two saves, including a breakaway save late in the second half. Nov. 1 - Navy 1, Colgate 0 Quite fittingly, it was senior team captain Julie Reynolds first goal of the season which proved to be the difference in the 2008 regular season finale as the Mids secured the No. 1 seed and won their first outright Patriot League regular season crown since With the win, Navy finished the seven-game conference slate unbeaten for just the third time in school history. The Mids previously finished unbeaten during the 1998 (5-0-1) and 2002 seasons (4-0-3). The win also marked Navy s 200th victory in program history. Nov. 7 - Navy 1, Colgate 0 (OT) - PL Semifinals Freshman Kate Herren scored her first career gamewinner just 5:52 into the first overtime period to put an end to a closely contested semifinal contest and send the top-seeded Midshipmen to the conference final for the third-straight season. Herren s Golden Goal gave Navy its school-record fourth overtime victory of the season. Shelly Moeller celebrates after heading in the game-winner just 3:33 into the first overtime in an early-season comeback win at UC Davis. The Mids won a school-record four OT games in
