2 SEASON OUTLOOK NAV Y WOM EN S SOCCER Navy Women's Soccer Looks to Return to the Upper Echelon of the Entering her 19th season at Navy, head women's soccer coach Carin Gabarra has her team primed for a return to the top of the standings and a 17th consecutive winning season this fall. Gabarra returns six starters and 12 letterwinners off a team that went in "We are excited to start the 2011 season," said Gabarra. "The players know we didn't have the kind of results we wanted last year. We worked very hard in the offseason on some new things and have focused this fall, and are moving forward in a better attacking system. Gabarra owns a career record of and is while at Navy. Her 230 career coaching wins rank as the 32nd most all-time in NCAA history and 24th among active women's soccer head coaches. During Gabarra's tenure, the Mids have won six Regular Season Championships and advanced to three NCAA Tournaments. Navy's lone two seniors this season will be team captain and defender Kate Herren and midfielder Amanda Serfass. Herren and Serfass both saw significant playing time in 2010 and improved upon their leadership and fitness for their final season. The Mids also have a trio of juniors who have served as regular starters during their first two seasons at Navy. Forward/midfielder Brittany Fruin, midfielder Fallon Puppolo and defender Kelsey Learned will all continue to play important roles in Sophomore Ashlynn Soellner and Paloma Perez highlight the Navy underclassmen contingent, which consists of 10 sophomores and 12 freshmen. Soellner was tabbed as the team MVP last season and Perez was selected to the All- Second Team. Both came off the bench as freshmen but could move into starting roles this fall. Navy has a very talented incoming freshmen class that features three players that played on ESPN Rise national top-15 high school teams, including the winter season national champions. Additionally, two newcomers ranked as top-20 prospects in their respective region by Top Drawer Soccer and another was an ESPN Rise All- American. "We have a good freshmen class," said Gabarra. "They bring more speed and a little more technical ability than we've had in the past and the whole team is excited to come back. Hopefully all those factors, how hard we work and injury prevention will pay off for us this season." This season's squad will be the youngest assembled in program history, as two-thirds of the squad will be freshmen and sophomores. Navy narrowly missed qualifying for the Patriot League Tournament last season, but with a talented 2011 roster, the Mids will be poised to once again compete at the top of the. Forwards #15 Paloma Perez Navy will use an attacking style of play that will showcase its talented depth up front. "We have a lot of speed and a lot of athleticism up front," said Gabarra. "We are going to demand that they play at an extremely high pace for the full 90 minutes, which will require a lot of depth. We are going to chase things down, run at a defenders 1v1 and create. It's going to take a lot of bodies and a lot of athletes that are fit." Junior Brittany Fruin played in the midfield during the last two seasons, racking up 19 points on six goals and seven assists, but is slated to move to a forward position this season. "Playing up top will be different for her, but she moves a lot and she knows how to get the ball and take on defenders. She knows how to serve and cut in and take shots. It s a good spot for her and I think she will really relish that new position." Also playing a key role for Navy will be sophomore Ashlynn Soellner. Soellner matched a teamhigh of six goals last season and was the team MVP. Soellner was a clutch scorer, as four of her goals were of the game-winning variety. In total, Soellner had six goals and three assists for 15 points. Soellner may see time at both the forward and midfield positions. "Ashlynn was outstanding last year. Her goal production was great and her fitness is at a whole new level this year. One year of experience at this level will really bring her game up and we are looking for a lot out of her." Sophomore Paloma Perez made an immediate impact in her freshman year. During Perez's first eight games of the season, she tallied five goals and was later selected to the All- Second Team. Perez ranked third on the squad in scoring with 12 points (five goals, two assists), despite missing the first six games of the season. Perez played 642 minutes last fall, ranking 17th on the team. "Even though Paloma didn't play 90 minutes a game, other coaches noticed her. You notice a player like that who is so fast, so athletic and so smooth. She did a lot this spring and she is fit and ready to go. She should be a huge contributor for us this year." Hannah Morse is another second-year player that showed promise on the offensive end last season. Morse saw action in all 20 games and registered four points (one goal, two assists). "Hannah can strike a ball as well as anyone on our team, with either foot. She doesn't lose a ball in traffic either. She can create more chances for herself than any other player. That is an important role to play because we don t have a lot of those players. If we need a goal or someone to find a way, Hannah is someone we can go to." Sophomore Sam Newhaller tallied three goals during her freshman campaign and saw action in all 20 games. "Sam is very good at getting end line. She likes to run at players and get behind them. She was very successful at that last year and as a wide forward, she will be able to take on even more." Newcomer Morgan Dankanich will be competing for time at the forward position. Dankanich's club team, FC Delco, won three state titles and she also helped her high school team win a state title as a junior. "Morgan is crafty on the ball and has the ability to score goals. She wants the ball and wants to take on. She will add a new flair to our attack." Freshman Brooke Merchant played on a Colleyville Heritage (Texas) squad that was ranked No. 11 in the final ESPN Rise winter season Fab 50 national rankings during her senior year. Merchant led her team to the state championship game and a 6

3 mark. She scored game-winning goals in the state quarterfinals and state semifinals. "Brooke likes to have the ball and take on. She is very deceiving 1v1 and gets defenders on her back consistently. She will also add to our attacking style. Freshman Lily Kraemer attended The Hill School during the season after graduating from Clearview High School in Pittman, N.J. Kraemer is one of three incoming freshman that is 5-10 (along with Gabby McIntyre and Sam Lee). "Lily is a very strong, back-to-pressure forward. She can keep possession up high and turn and run at defenders." Freshman Caprice Kelty, a native of Odenton, Md., spent the past season at the Naval Academy Preparatory School after graduating from Arundel High School in Maryland in "Caprice is a very good athlete. She is committed and I think she will eventually find a spot on the field." Freshman Gabby McIntyre comes to Annapolis after spending a year at The Peddie School in New Jersey. McIntyre also scored 44 goals with 11 assists during her final two seasons of high school soccer at Treasure Coast in Florida. "Gabby is a very good athlete. She has great athleticism and quickness. She will adapt quickly to Division I and help complete our attack." Navy has the depth and talent to spread the scoring around, which will make them always dangerous in the offensive end. "We won't really rely on one goal-scorer," said Gabarra. "We have always had a lot of scorers and I like it to be spread out, because defenders can't key in on one person. I like our goal production coming from all over." Navy's two starting forwards from a year ago, Carissa Youker and Christine Calderon, graduated in May. Youker led the team in scoring for the second straight season with six goals, six assists and 18 points. Calderon added three goals and two assists for eight points. Midfielders Navy has a solid group of players in the mix for playing time in the midfield in Additionally, some players listed as forwards could see time in the midfield. Senior Amanda Serfass will be a mainstay in the midfield after starting all 20 games as a junior, tallying two goals and one assist. Serfass bounced back after missing the majority of her sophomore season with an injury. "Amanda is as fit as she has ever been and worked extremely hard in the offseason. Her leadership will be essential, especially being only one of two seniors. She is as competitive as they get. She is very mobile and is all over the field for us. She's a ball-winner, she gets in tight to tackles and cleans up other player's mistakes in defensive breakdowns." Junior Fallon Puppolo started all 20 games in the midfield and contributed two assists. Puppolo is one of the most experienced players on the team. "Fallon is one on our most technical players and she can serve the ball with both feet. She is one of our best players at switching the point. She's played both attacking and defensive midfield and we have had her in a defensive role a lot because it s a good spot for her to get the ball. She will be somewhere in the center midfield and it's very important for us to have the ball at her feet." Sophomore Taylor Batye is back to full health after losing the majority of her freshman season to an injury. The coaching staff is expecting Batye to play a key role and will see time as an attacking midfielder. "Taylor's healthy and we are excited for her. She is very crafty on the ball and very quick. She's a good playmaker and loves to have the ball. She has the things you want in a center midfielder and she should be taking a huge step for us with her impact this fall." Sophomore Britta Vivaldi returns after getting a solid year of experience, playing in 11 games as a freshman. Vivaldi could also be used as a defender. "Britta had a great spring and is very committed. Her fitness is great. She brings a new intensity and competitiveness to every training session and she works so hard." Freshman Rachel Hunter will also see time in the midfield position. Hunter led her team to a North Carolina 4-A State Championship and her team was ranked No. 4 in the ESPN National Fab 50 spring season rankings. Top Drawer Soccer identified Hunter as the 13th ranked prospect in the South Atlantic Region's Class of 2011 rankings. "Rachel is fabulous on the ball. She wants the ball and her speed of play is phenomenal. Technically, she's one of the best we've had. She can move the ball and she can see things near and far and she will be in a playmaking role." Another highly touted freshman is Julie Schumacher, who played scholastically at powerhouse St. Thomas Aquinas in Florida. ESPN Rise, in their season-ending Fab 50 winter season rankings, crowned Schumacher's high school team national champions and Schumacher led her team with 32 goals. For her efforts, Schumacher was RETURNING STATISTICAL LEADERS Category Player No. Points Ashlynn Soellner 15 (6 g, 3 a) Goals Ashlynn Soellner 6 Assists Kate Herren 5 GW Goals Ashlynn Soellner 4 Shots Ashlynn Soellner 34 Saves Legler/Lopez-Shaw 42 ON THE SCHEDULE Date Opponent 10 Record Series 8/19 at High Point Navy, 1-0 8/21 at N.C. 4 tabbed as an ESPN Rise Third-Team All-American and picked up an ESPN Rise National Girls Soccer Player of the Week honor. "Julie's fit, competitive and intense. She has a lot of great intangibles. She's good on the ball, calm and composed. She is a very good organizer and a vocal leader." Freshman Jade Seabrook has extensive club experience with the prestigious Ohio Premier Eagles squad and also played in the Olympic Development Program. "Jade is going to see a lot of time. She is very technical, great tackler, good on the ball and a good 1v1 defender. She will spend time in the holding midfield spot." Freshman Sam Lee is a two-time All- Washington State selection out of Richland High School. Top Drawer Soccer ranked Lee No. 18 in the Pacific Northwest Region Class of 2011 recruiting rankings. "Sam is a very good athlete. She knows the game and understands it well. She is very strong and physical, and can create goal-scoring chances for us." Navy lost just one starting midfielder, Anastasia Abid, to graduation. Abid started 19 games and tallied eight points (three goals, two assists) last season. Defenders Senior team captain Kate Herren will provide the on-field leadership from the defensive backline. Herren played all 20 games a year ago and ranked third on the team in total minutes played. Herren also ranked second on the team with five assists and added one goal. "Kate is a fantastic leader," said Gabarra. "She is a role model in how she acts on and off the field. She always does her best and makes great choices. She will be a fantastic captain. Also, her fitness and commitment is on a whole new level and she will be out there a lot for us." Junior Kelsey Learned excelled in a central defender position in 2010 after an injury to starter Emily Wilkin moved her from her midfield position. Learned started 16 games and led all players last season with 1,680 minutes played. She also scored two goals. "Kelsey was one of our best players all spring and we will have her out there again as a central defender." Sophomore Emily Wilkin earned a starting position as a defender last season, but suffered a season-ending injury in just the third contest of the year. Wilkin is now healthy and will be a key player on the defensive backline in "Emily is a great 1v1 defender. She is fast and she tackles well. She likes to get forward and she is good on set pieces. She is a good all-around athlete and player." Junior Stephanie Strine also missed significant time due to an injury in 2010, but has recovered and is looking to return to the form of her freshman season, where she started 17 games. "She is healthy for the first time in two years. She is fit, has a great mentality and ability to attack. She is motivated to do well and she is ready to come back and play." Sophomore KD Woolard saw action in 11 games last season and could see a bigger role in 2011 as her play has improved. "KD had a great spring and improved her fitness tremendously. She got a lot of minutes in the spring and she could play a big role back there." Freshman Kahra Kelty, twin of Caprice, spent last season with her sister at the Naval Academy Preparatory School after graduating from nearby Arundel High School in Kelty could be an immediate contributor as a defender. "Kahra is a good 1v1 defender. She is big, strong, athletic and quick. We are hoping to get her used to the speed of play at the Division I level and she could play a big role." Freshman Sarah Martella played scholastically at Bishop Eustace in New Jersey and was a club teammate of classmate Morgan Dankanich. She helped her high school team to a New Jersey State Parochial title. "Sarah is a good defender with valuable club experience. She is a tough tackler and is smart with the ball. She is organized, tactical and has the ability to contribute immediately." Navy will move on defensively without Katie Kelly, who graduating in Kelly was a reliable three-year starter on the defensive backline. Goalkeepers The starting goalkeeper competition is currently wide open, with all three returning players having an opportunity to emerge as the team's starter. Junior Hannah Legler is the most experienced after making 12 starts in goal last season. Legler earned a record with a team-best 1.10 GAA. "Hannah is very good at handling crosses and also organizing us defensively. She also has a great long ball and serves set pieces very well. " Sophomore Alexes Lopez-Shaw made eight starts last season and posted a record with a 1.36 GAA. "Alexes is a very good shot-stopper. She will stop anything close and anything driven at the goal." Sophomore Elizabeth Hoerner will also be competing for playing time at the goalkeeper position. "She is very courageous and comes out well on crosses and when the ball is driven through." Navy will also keep a fourth goalkeeper, freshman Emily LaManna, out of Lakeshore High School in Michigan. LaManna earned four letters at Lakeshore in soccer and led her high school team to a pair of district titles and the Big 16 West Championship during her senior season ROSTER BREAKDOWN Midshipmen By Class Seniors (2) Herren, Serfass Midshipmen By Position Forwards (11) Batye, Dankanich, Fruin,C.
