Lane s seventh season was by far the most disappointing of his coaching career. Several strong non-conference wins, including a victory of national power Trinity Valley, were quickly washed away due to several injuries and dismissals. The Lady Indians entered the Panhandle conference with just 7 scholarship players. That number dropped to 6 several games in due to another injury. With 12 games against teams ranked in the top ten of the NJ- CAA national poll, Chipola struggled to a 1-11 conference mark. Their lone win was over #3 Pensacola Junior College. The Lady Indians played much better than their record indicated and were competitive to the very end in most of their loses, however, the talent in the Panhandle was too much for the shorthanded Lady Indians. 28 Bianca Jarrett became the 2nd consecutive Lady Indian to earn First Team All-American status with NJCAA and the WBCA (Latoya Williams, 2009). Jarrett, who signed with West Virginia, capped off the season with an impressive feat. Jarrett averaged 35.4ppg in the final four games of conference play. Lane s sixth season (2009) made school history when the Lady Indians defeated Kaskaskia College (IL), 81-74, to finish third in the National Junior College Athletic Association Tournament in the Bicentennial Center in Salina, Kansas. This is the highest finish in the history of the women s program at Chipola. The Lady Indians began the tournament with wins over Sheridan College, WY (86-47) and Walters State, TN (66-53). Jefferson College, MO defeated Chipola (78-59) in the third round. Central Arizona defeated Jefferson College in the championship game to win the women s national title. The Lady Indians finished their season at Lane s fourth season (2007) was one of many highs and lows. While fighting through another difficult sched-

6 ule and several early season setbacks, the Lady Indians once again accumulated a number of big wins. Chipola fought for another second place Panhandle Conference finish and a fifth consecutive FC- CAA/NJCAA Region VIII Tournament appearance. Chipola won its third straight FCCAA/NJ- CAA Region VIII championship, once again defeating Gulf Coast in the finals In Salina, Odessa (TX) once again all but ended Chipola s season with a defeat in the second round of the National Tournament. The Lady Indians battled back with wins over Copiah-Lincoln and Salt Lake C.C. to claim fifth place. Lane s third season (2006) at Chipola continued to see history made and records fall. The regular season began with an eight-week run as the number two ranked team in the country, the highest ranking ever for the Lady Indians. Early season victories over junior college powerhouse Trinity Valley and national tourney regular Southeastern (IL), as well as a last-second loss to eventual national champion Monroe (NY), highlighted a very difficult non-conference. The Lady Indians battled their way to a second place finish in the Panhandle and earned their fourth consecutive FCCAA/NJCAA Region VIII Tournament appearance. The Tournament final game was another thrilling contest between Chipola and Gulf Coast. Chipola defeated Gulf Coast 73-69, and earned their second consecutive trip to the NJCAA National Tournament. Chipola earned redemption on their second trip to Salina. Early round victories over Arkansas-Fort Smith and Trinity Valley propelled the Lady Indians into the Final Four where they lost a heartbreaker to Odessa (TX) After another loss to Central Arizona, Chipola settled for a fourth place finish. The Lady Indians season ended with school records in victories (31), conference victories (12), NJCAA national ranking (#2), and consecutive victories (11). Lane s second season (2005) began the Lady Indians historic journey. Tojalynn Atmore s three pointer as time expired catapulted the Lady Indians to a victory over Gulf Coast that captured Chipola s first-ever Region VIII championship and a trip to the NJCAA National Tournament in Salina, KS. The Lady Indians finished with a 29-8 mark, a school record, and an NJCAA national ranking of #6. Lane came to Chipola from Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, IA, where he served as an assistant coach in the men s program in Prior to Kirkwood, Lane served as an assistant to the boy s program at Iowa City West High from Lane was also an assistant with the girl s basketball program from I m truly honored to be part of the great tradition here at Chipola, said Coach Lane. Chipola is an excellent place for top-notch athletes to come and get an outstanding education and further their basketball careers. Chipola is also a place where student-athletes can feel comfortable. The college and the town have a family atmosphere that supports the program. Lane says teaching his players about good decision-making is the key to success. I want my players to do the right thing to know the difference between right and wrong both on and off the court. Academics are a big priority for Coach Lane, We re going to have a team that works just as hard in the classroom as it does on the court to achieve success and represents the team well within the college. A native of Iowa City, IA, Lane played college baseball at Kirkwood CC and Luther College in Decorah, IA. He graduated from Coe College in Cedar Rapids, IA, with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in History. He married the former Heather Meyer in May of

This year, Chipola will host the Men s and Women s State Tournaments on March 2-5, The record of men s tournament winners shows why the Panhandle Conference is considered the toughest in the state and the nation. Of 50 state tournaments, Panhandle teams(*) have won 25. Of the 25, Chipola has won twelve, the largest number of wins of any college in the state. Pensacola has won five state championships and won the national championship in Okaloosa-Walton has won three state tournaments and in 1995 went on to win the national championship. Chipola finished third in the national tournament in Fans have suggested that Panhandle teams wear themselves out playing each other before they get to the state tournament. Rumor has it that both Pensacola and Okaloosa-Walton found the national tournament easier to win than the Panhandle Conference championship.
