Saturday's contest will pit the two of the SEC's best offenses and defenses. LSU enters the contest averaging 30.8 points per game, third in the league, while is first in the conference with 37.3 points a game. is first in the conference and third in the nation in scoring defense at 10.7 points per game, while LSU is limiting its opponents to 18 points a contest. LSU RB Joseph Addai goes into Saturday ranked No. 1 in the SEC in rushing with yards per game. Addai, who has scored at least one TD in all five games this year, is coming off a 32-carry, 156-yard, 1-TD performance in the win over Florida. Defensively, the Tigers have not allowed a passing TD in 11 quarters and over the last three games, LSU is allowing only 10 points and 191 yards in SEC wins over Mississippi State, Vanderbilt and Florida. LBs Ali Highsmith (6.5 TFL, 4.0 sacks and 35 tackles) and Cameron Vaughn (32 tackles) pace the Tigers defense. Tiger Defense Comes Up Big In Win Over No. 11 Florida LSU's defense again was up to the challenge as the Tigers held Florida's potent offensive attack to just 17 points and only 206 yards in a win over the Gators in Tiger Stadium. The win was the first by LSU over Florida in Tiger Stadium since Despite turning the ball over a season-high 5 times, including 4 on the short-side of the field, LSU's defense stymied the Gators all day holding them to a season-low in both passing yards (107) and total yards (206). The Tigers were once again quick out of the gate at home, scoring on two of their first four possessions for a 14-0 first quarter lead when JaMarcus Russell connected with Dwayne Bowe on a 27-yard TD pass. LSU led 14-7 at halftime when a Tiger turnover led the Gators only points of the first half. All 17 of Florida points came off of LSU turnovers, including a 1-yard run by DeShawn Wynn that put the Gators up late in the third quarter. The Tigers regroup and responded with a 12-play, 75-yard drive early in the fourth quarter to take the lead for good, 21-17, on a 3-yard run by Joseph Addai. LSU's defense then took over from there, holding Florida to only 27 fourth quarter yards on four possessions. For the game, Addai led the Tigers with a career-best 156 yards rushing on 32 carries, while the LSU defense recorded 5 sacks in the victory. 3 Les Miles HEAD COACH FIRST YEAR Les Miles, the 2002 Big 12 Conference Coach of the Year and former assistant with Michigan, Colorado and the Dallas Cowboys who built Oklahoma State into a force in the Big 12, became LSU's 32nd head football coach on Jan. 3, In four short years, Miles turned the Oklahoma State football program into one that was nationally competitive, despite competing in-state against one of the country's dominant programs. Now as the head coach of the flagship university in the state of Louisiana, it's Miles' mission to not only keep the Tigers among the elite in the nation on the playing field, but to also continue the program's success in the classroom and in the community. On the field, Miles is a proven winner and he was the obvious choice for LSU, a team that ranks second in the SEC in victories over the past five years with 48. He's a skillful manager who brings to Baton Rouge football expertise, an eye for evaluating talent, and a personality that has energized the program. All talents that are necessary for running and maintaining a top 10 college football program. Miles led the Cowboys to three straight bowl appearances, an accomplishment Oklahoma State had not achieved since Jimmy Johnson started a string of three straight post-season games beginning in In addition, Oklahoma State's appearance in the Cotton Bowl to cap the 2003 season marked the first time in 55 years that the Cowboys appeared in a January bowl game. Miles' college playing and coaching career includes experience under some of the most noted coaches in college football. At Michigan, he played for legendary coach Bo Schembechler and later served on Schembechler's staff. He also worked with Gary Moeller at Michigan and Bill McCartney at Colorado. As head coach at Oklahoma State, he built a consistent winner out of a program that had recorded only one winning season since 1988, and had posted a record of in the three years prior to his arrival at OSU. After going 4-7 in his first year as head coach in 2001, he took the Cowboys to consecutive winning marks of 8-5 in 2002, 9-4 in 2003 and 7-5 in Prior to his tenure as head coach at Oklahoma State, Miles was the tight ends coach for the Dallas Cowboys for three seasons from During his three years with the Cowboys, Dallas won one divisional title while participating in the playoffs twice. Miles comes to LSU off of his second tour of duty with Oklahoma State. Before going to Dallas, Miles served as Oklahoma State's offensive coordinator for three seasons from , including an 8-3 season and Alamo Bowl berth in Success has followed Miles at every stop of both his playing and professional career. He was a two-year letterman at Michigan ( ). During those two seasons, Michigan was a combined , had final Associated Press national rankings in the top 10 and participated in both the Rose and Orange Bowls. He joined Bo Schembechler's Michigan coaching staff in 1980 for the first of two stints as a coach in Ann Arbor. In 1980 and 1981, Michigan combined for 19 wins and just five losses, won the Big 10 title in 1980 and played in the Rose and Bluebonnet Bowls, respectively. Miles left Michigan for Colorado, where he served on Bill McCartney's staff from 1982 through In his final two years at Colorado, the Buffs earned bids to the Freedom Bowl and Bluebonnet Bowl. In 1987, he returned to Michigan, where he would spend the next eight years as part of one of the most successful eras in Michigan football history. From 1987 to 1994, Michigan won 71 games, made eight straight bowl appearances, including four trips to the Rose Bowl, and finished no lower than No. 21 in final Associated Press national rankings. The 1989 Michigan squad finished 10-2, won the Big 10 championship and finished ranked No. 7 in the country. That would be Coach Bo Schembechler's final season as Michigan's head coach. When Gary Moeller took over the Michigan program prior to the 1990 season, Miles remained on the staff. The 1990 team finished 9-3, winning the Big 10 title and the Gator Bowl. The following season (1991), Michigan finished 10-2 and with a No. 6 national ranking. Miles coached some of the best players to wear the Michigan uniform, including eight first-team All-Americans, 10 total All-Americans and 12 players from Wolverine offensive lines that were NFL draftees. Born November 10, 1953, Miles earned his degree in economics from Michigan in Les and Kathy Miles have four children, Kathryn, Leslie Matthew, Benjamin and Macy Grace. Sam Nader, LSU's assistant AD for Football Operations, graduated from in 1967 after playing quarterback for the Tigers. On The Helmet In light of the recent natural disaster known as Hurricane Katrina that devastated Louisiana, in particular the city of New Orleans, LSU will add three stickers to its helmet that are representative of the state of Louisiana. The Louisiana state flag along with a "Fleur-de-Lis" will both be represented on the LSU football helmet this year. The "Fleur-de-Lis" has been traditionally used to represent French royalty, and in that sense it is said to signify "perfection, light, and life". The Fleur-de-Lis is synonymous with the city of New Orleans. In addition, LSU, along with other teams from the SEC, will wear a sticker that combines that shapes of the states of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama, the states that were devastated by Hurricane Katrina. The New Tiger Stadium Tiger Stadium takes on a new look in 2005 as the old west upper deck was taken down and rebuilt over the past nine months. As part of the west side renovation, a new state-of-the-art press box has been added as well as 3,200 special amenity seats have been put in place. Tiger Stadium's new capacity is listed at 92,400 and a sellout crowd is expected on Saturday night. Expect The Unexpected When LSU And Meet Since 1988, the LSU- series has become one of close calls and one in which the teams and the fans have come to expect the unexpected. The following is a listing of some of the notable happenings in the series since 1988: 1988: LSU's Tommy Hodson hit Eddie Fuller in the back of the endzone on fourth down with 1:41 left to lift the Tigers to a 7-6 win over fourth-ranked. The noise from the stadium crowd after the play registered on a seismograph across campus prompting the game to be titled "The Earthquake Game." 1994: intercepted five passes in the fourth quarter, returning three for TDs as the Tigers rally to post a win over LSU in a game that become known as "The Interception Game." 1995: LSU donned white jerseys at home for the first time since the early 1980's and promptly went out and upset fifthranked, LSU preserved the win with an interception in the endzone on the last play of the game. The contest was dubbed the "Bring Back the Magic" game. 1996: With the old Sports Arena burning to the ground a couple hundred yards away, LSU beat, 19-15, in a game titled "The Night the Barn Burned." 1997: Titled "The Comeback", QB Dameyune Craig engineered a 10-play, 80-yard drive late in the fourth quarter to spark the Tigers to a upset of 10th-ranked LSU. 2004: Titled "The Call", appeared to have missed an extra point with 1:14 left that would have left the game tied at 9-9. However, LSU was called for a penalty on the extra point, thus giving a second chance at winning the game. The second PAT was good and held on for a 10-9 win, snapping LSU's 10-game winning streak. Highsmith Named SEC Defensive Player of the Week LSU linebacker Ali Highsmith has been named the Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his role in the Tigers' win over 11th-ranked Florida on Saturday. Highsmith, a sophomore from Miami, led the Tiger defense with nine tackles, including four tackles for losses, against the Gators. Highsmith added a pair of sacks and three quarterback hurries as the Tiger defense held Florida's potent offensive attack to only 17 points and a season-low 206 yards of offense. For the season, Highsmith leads the Tigers in tackles (35), tackles for losses (6.5) and sacks (4). He also ranks first in the SEC in forced fumbles with three. The honor is the first of Highsmith's career and it marks the third straight week in which an LSU player has been recognized by the league. Last week, quarterback JaMarcus Russell was the league's offensive player of the week, while Skyler Green earned SEC Special Teams Player of the Week honors against Mississippi State.

5 Miles Off To Best Start For First-Year LSU Coach Since 1987 With a 4-1 overall record, Les Miles is off to the best start for a first-year coach at LSU since 1987 when Mike Archer won 7 of his first 8 games in leading the Tigers to a overall mark. Keeping Them Out Of The Endzone LSU's defense has allowed only 30 points over the past three games, holding Mississippi State to just 7 first quarter points, limiting Vanderbilt to a pair of field goals in the 34-6 Tiger victory and allowing Florida just 17 points in the victory. By holding Mississippi State to seven points and Vanderbilt to six points, it marks the first time since 2003 the Tigers held backto-back SEC foes to 7 points or less in consecutive road games (Oct. 18 at South Carolina, 33-7 and Nov. 15, 27-3). Bringing The Heat After recording only 1 sack in the season-opener against Arizona State, LSU has now recorded 21 sacks in its last four games. Through five games, the Tigers have 22 sacks to their credit. The Tigers had 6 sacks against Vanderbilt, a week after LSU recorded 7 in its win over Mississippi State. DE Melvin Oliver lead the Tigers with 4 sacks each. In all, the Tigers have had 10 different players record a sack this year. The facts show that since 1960, LSU is (.767) at night under the lights compared to a (.440) mark in Tiger Stadium during the day. Since 2000, LSU is 30-6 overall at home. Since the 2000 season, LSU is 25-4 (.862) at night in Tiger Stadium and they are 6-2 (.750) at home during the day over that same span. Prior to 2000, LSU had only won 11 games at home during the day in 34 tries. From 1960 to 1999, LSU posted an (.368) record at home during the day. 13 LSU I T S S A T U R D A Y N I G H T I N Death Valley I'd been warned prior to my first visit to Baton Rouge that the legendary Death Valley mystique was a myth. That assessment couldn't have been more wrong. Tiger Stadium was as loud as any I've ever heard during the dramatic fourth quarter of Saturday's Georgia game, the festivities surrounding it as advertised. The streets were lined with purple and gold. Smoke emanated from the grills in the parking lot. Shouts of "Go Tigers" and "Tiger Bait" echoed from the stadium deep into the heart of campus. And that was just Friday night. -- Stewart Mandel, SI.com (Sept. 21, 2003) By the Numbers LSU 92,402- largest crowd is see a game in Tiger Stadium (vs. Florida, Oct. 15, 2005) 1,500 - old dorm rooms below the east and west stands.703 -winning percentage after 497 home games LSU began playing football in Tiger Stadium in 1924 and is currently in its 81st year in the venerable stadium on SATURDAY NIGHT. LSU has won 19 OF ITS LAST 22 games at home. More than 85,000 FANS have attended each of LSU s last 36 home games. In that span, the Tigers have eclipsed the 90,000 mark 26 times, including a school-record 92,402 for the Oct. 15, 2005 game that pitted No. 8 LSU against No. 11 Florida. The Tigers won the game Since national attendance figures began being kept in 1957, LSU has ranked in the top 20 all 45 seasons. The Tigers have been in the top 15 for 43 of the 45 years and in the top 10 on 37 occasions, including 32 straight from Fourteen times, LSU has ranked in the TOP SIX IN THE NATION, including the last four. Since 1960, LSU owns a stellar (.761) record in traditional Tiger Stadium night games. On the other hand, the Tigers are just (.440) at home during the day in that span. It s like being inside a drum. -- Paul Bear Bryant It makes a body tingle -- these folks go berserk when the band marches on the field. -- Douglas Looney, Sports Illustrated The Tiger Stadium sound was like nothing I had ever heard in my life. It s not like any other place. -- Bill Curry, ESPN College football is never better than when there s a good team in Tiger Stadium. -- Lee Corso, ESPN Earthquake Game October 8, Tommy Hodson connected with Eddie Fuller on 4-and-10 with 1:41 to play for the game-winning touchdown as LSU upset No. 4. The play caused such a thunderous explosion from the crowd of 79,341 that the tremor caused by the vibrations measured on the seismograph across campus. Halloween Night October 31, No. 1 LSU trailed No. 3 Ole Miss, 3-0, late in the fourth quarter when Billy Cannon fielded a punt off the bounce at the 11- yard line.
