Tiger Stadium (91,600) THE SABAN ERA 4 YEARS, 4 BOWLS, 2 SEC TITLES, 1 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP LSU Looks To Extend Winning Streak To 10 Against LSU (1-0) will go after its 10th straight victory dating back to 2003 when the third-ranked Tigers host Arkansas State (0-1) tonight at 7 o clock in Tiger Stadium. LSU is coming off a thrilling overtime win over Oregon State last week, while the Indians dropped a decision to Missouri. The Tigers will look to start 2-0 for the second straight year and for the fourth time in five seasons under Nick Saban. LSU's current 9-game winning is the longest since the 1973 when the Tigers opened their season with nine consecutive victories. It's also the longest winning streak spanning two seasons since when LSU won 11 straight games. LSU has now won four straight and nine of its last 10 games in Tiger Stadium. Saturday's overtime win against Oregon State was the first for the Tigers since beating Mississippi, 45-38, in an extra period in LSU is now 3-1 all-time in overtime games, including a 3-0 mark under Saban. Pair of QBs Lead LSU To OT Win Over Oregon State JaMarcus Russell started the comeback and then Marcus Randall finished it as the Tigers rallied from an 8-point deficit with less than two minutes remaining to force overtime and eventually beat Oregon State, 22-21, in Tiger Stadium in the season-opener for both teams. Trailing 9-0 at halftime, Russell replaced an ineffective Randall and pulled the Tigers to within 9-7 late in the third quarter on a 16-yard TD pass to Skyler Green. OSU answered with a 9-play, 65-yard drive to extend its margin to The score remained that way until Russell rallied the Tigers on a 4-play, 64-yard drive capped with a 38-yard TD strike to Dwayne Bowe. Russell then converted the two-point conversion to tie the score at with just over a minute left. In overtime and with Russell out with cramps, Randall returned to the field and scored on a 5-yard run to give LSU its first lead at OSU followed with a TD of its own, however the extra-point attempt sailed wide right, the third missed PAT for the Beavers, and the Tigers escaped with a win. For the game, Russell completed 9 of 26 passes for 145 yards and 2 TDs, while Randall was 7 of 18 for 66 yards and 1 interception. Justin Vincent led the Tigers with 48 yards rushing, while Bowe caught 5 passes for 103 yards and a score. 3 Nick Saban HEAD COACH FIFTH YEAR 2003 Associated Press National Coach of the Year 2003 Bear Bryant National Coach of the Year 2003 Eddie Robinson Award For years outsiders viewed the LSU football program as an unpolished gem, a potential giant waiting to be reborn in the world of college football. With the wealth of resources LSU has to offer, its tradition and the available talent within the state of Louisiana, all the program needed was the right person to lead it. In four years as head coach of the Tigers, Nick Saban has proven to be that leader. Since taking over a program that suffered through seven losing seasons in the 1990s, Saban has guided the Tigers to the pinnacle of college football - winning the 2003 BCS National Championship with a victory over Oklahoma in the Nokia Sugar Bowl. The victory culminated a four-year ride under Saban that has been unmatched in the history of Tiger football. Since taking the reigns in 2000, Saban has guided the Tigers to a overall mark, while claiming a pair of SEC titles in 2001 and LSU's 2003 BCS National Championship is just the second for the Tigers in football, and the first since Saban's ability to successfully lead the Tigers comes from a management style that focuses on the entire program, one that puts his players in position to have success, both on the field and in the classroom. Armed with a plan that starts with recruiting quality people, outstanding football players and good students, Saban and his staff have transformed LSU into a team that is sure to be a fixture among the nation's elite programs for years to come. On the field, Saban has developed a reputation as a defensive mastermind who is among the best in the game - professional or college - when it comes to game day coaching decisions. His defenses are physical, aggressive and deceptive, while offensively, the Tigers put up staggering numbers with a wealth of skill players leading the way. His teams play hard, make good decisions on the field and have proven that they are confident enough to overcome any type of adversity that is thrown in their direction. It's a style and system that has proven to be successful, both for the team as well as the individual as six Tigers have earned First Team All-America honors in four years, while 18 of his LSU players have gone on to be selected in the NFL Draft, including six in the 2004 draft. Off the field, Saban demands excellence from his players in both the classroom as well as the community. While the Tigers were marching to the 2003 national title on the field, the LSU football team combined for a 2.52 grade point average. A few months later, the squad bettered that mark with a 2.76 average for the spring semester as the Tigers had 50 players with a 3.0 or better during the spring and just six athletes that failed to reach a 2.0. In addition to the honors the Tigers garnered on the field, LSU had 25 players earn a spot in the SEC Academic Honor Roll in Once again, numbers that show not only is Saban committed to academics, but his players are also dedicated to receiving an education as well. Since December of 2000, 51 football players who played under Saban at LSU have earned their degree, which includes 13 members of the 2003 national championship squad. A major part of enhancing and cultivating the education experience for the student-athletes at LSU has been the addition of the $15 million state-of-the-art Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes. Saban spearheaded the fundraising for the center, which included donating $50,000 of his own money to the cause. The center, the best of its kind in college athletics, features a 1,000-seat auditorium with over 100 computers in a 54,000-square foot facility that gives all of LSU's student-athletes the best chance to have success in the classroom. Saban's mission statement for the LSU football program is simple. He wants his players to become better people for having been a part of the program. He also wants to develop his players so they can reach their full athletic potential, which will enable them to have the opportunity to win a championship. Finally, it's his plan to help each player graduate and launch their career so that when they leave LSU they can have the best opportunities to be successful in life. Prior to LSU, Saban spent five years as the head coach at Michigan State, where he built the Spartans into a perennial Big Ten contender after going to four bowl games in five years. Green re-injured his ankle late in the fourth quarter of last week s game against Oregon State. He s been limited in practice this week. Should Green not play, then Corey Webster would return punts for the Tigers. Green originally injured his ankle in LSU s second scrimmage of fall camp. LSU Welcomes Back 4 Former Head Coaches And Hundreds Of Players LSU will welcome back four former head coaches along with over 300 players to tonight s game. The former head coaches, who will be recognized before the game, that are back in Tiger Stadium include Paul Dietzel, Jerry Stovall, Bill Arnsparger and Mike Archer. Dietzel led LSU to its first national title in 1958, Stovall led the Tigers to the Orange Bowl in 1982, Arnsparger guided LSU to two Sugar Bowls and the 1986 SEC title, while Archer coached LSU to the 1988conference championship. The coaches and former players had a reunion on Friday night and then will sit together for the tonight s game against the Indians. LSU s Arkansas Ties The Tigers have two players on their roster with ties to the state of Arkansas and that s true freshman linebacker Matt Stoltz from Little Rock and offensive lineman Brett Helms from Stuttgart. Tigers Go To 3-1 In Overtime Games LSU's overtime win over Oregon State ran the Tigers' record to 3-1 in overtime games. The Tigers are 3-0 all-time in overtime games in Tiger Stadium with all three of those wins coming under Nick Saban. The Oregon State contest was the first overtime game for LSU since a victory over in LSU's only overtime loss came at by a count in Taking Note On The Tigers Under Saban Here is a look at some notable trends for LSU during its first 53 games under Nick Saban LSU is 34-2 when leading at halftime and 32-2 when leading after three quarters The Tigers are 37-3 when scoring 20 or more points and 34-0 when scoring at least 25 points in a game On the other hand, the Tigers are 3-10 when failing to reach the 20-point mark LSU is 11-2 in games decided by 7 points or less and 5-1 in games decided by 3 points or less LSU is 26-1 when holding opponents to fewer than 100 team rushing yards and the Tigers are 19-0 when having a player rush for 100 yards. Another Fourth-Quarter Comeback LSU's comeback from a 15-7 fourth quarter deficit against Oregon State represents the sixth time under Nick Saban that the Tigers have rallied to win a game despite trailing in the final quarter. The last time the Tigers rallied to win in the fourth quarter came against Kentucky in 2002 when Marcus Randall connected with Devery Henderson on a 75-yard TD pass as time expired for a LSU win. Over the six fourth-quarter comeback wins for the Tigers since 2000, Randall has been involved in three as he threw the game winning TD against Kentucky and in 2002 and then ran for the game-winning score against Oregon State in overtime. The following is a look at LSU's other fourth quarter comebacks under Saban that resulted in a victory for the Tigers: Year Game 4th Quarter Comeback Results 2000 Miss. 5 That Tiger Stadium Mystique Is Back Under Saban LSU coach Nick Saban has restored the mystique that has made Tiger Stadium one of the toughest places for opposing teams to play. In 4-plus seasons at LSU, Saban has put together a 24-5 mark at home, which includes a 12-4 record in SEC games. LSU finished its 2003 season with a 6-1 at home after going 6-1 in Tiger Stadium in Under Saban, the Tigers are 6-2 vs. Top 25 teams in Tiger Stadium. Bowe Has Big Game In First Career Start Sophomore WR Dwayne Bowe made quite an impact in his first career start, scoring the game-tying TD with just over a minute left in LSU's overtime win over Oregon State. Bowe, from Miami, Fla., led the Tigers with 5 catches for 103 yards and 1 TD. Bowe scored on a 38-yard catch and run from JaMarcus Russell late in the fourth quarter. A player earlier, Bowe setup the TD with a 26-yard reception from Russell. Of Bowe's five catches against Oregon State, four accounted for first downs, which also included the 38-yard TD reception. Bowe also had what appeared to be a 57-yard TD in the first quarter called back due to a penalty. Bowe And Addai Each Catch 5 Passes WR Dwayne Bowe and RB/WR Joseph Addai became the first two players to record at least five receptions in the same game since Nov. 13, 2003 at when Michael Clayton pulled down 12 catches and Devery Henderson had 5. Another Sellout In Tiger Stadium The Oregon State game marked the sixth straight sellout in Tiger Stadium dating back to the Georgia game last September. In all, LSU played five of its seven home games in 2003 in front of crowds of 91,000 or better. The Oregon State contest marked the first sellout for a season-opener at home for the Tigers since drawing 91,782 for the Tulane game in It also marked the largest season-opening crowd in Tiger Stadium in school history with 91,828 fans in attendance. The following is a list of the top 10 crowds in Tiger Stadium history, all of which have come in the Saban era: No. Att. LSU hasn't lost a home non-conference game since dropping a last-second decision to UAB in LSU's 16-3 Against Non-SEC Foes Under Saban The Tigers ran their non-conference record to 16-3 under Nick Saban following the overtime win over Oregon State. The Tigers, who were 5-0 against non-sec teams in 2003, haven't lost a non-conference game since dropping a decision to Texas in the 2003 Cotton Bowl. LSU hasn't lost a regular season non-conference game since falling to Virginia Tech, 26-8, to open the 2002 season. Randall Makes First Start At QB Since 2002 Season For Tigers Vs. OSU LSU QB Marcus Randall made his first start since 2002 and seventh overall against Oregon State on Saturday. Randall, who completed 7 of 18 passes for 66 yards against the Beavers, is now 3-4 as LSU's starting quarterback. Russell Shines In Debut LSU QB JaMarcus Russell shined in his much anticipated debut as the redshirt freshman started the second half and rallied the Tigers to an overtime win over Oregon State. Russell led the Tigers on two second half scoring drives, which included tossing a 38-yard TD pass to Dwayne Bowe with just over a minute left in the contest to pull the Tigers to within Russell then tied the game with a two-point conversion that sent the game into overtime. In overtime, Russell suffered cramps to his legs and was forced out of the contest midway through LSU's possession. It is the first time LSU had different quarterbacks score in different ways in a game since Sept. 6, 2003 at Arizona when Matt Mauck rushed for a TD and Randall tossed a score. Tiger Defense Tough Against the Run LSU held Oregon State to 84 net rushing yards extending the streak of holding the opponents under 100 yards rushing to three straight games and five of the last six dating back to last season. A year ago, the Tigers ranked third in the nation in rushing defense, allowing only 67 yards per game. The Tigers allowed only two opponents in 2003 to gain over 100 yards on the ground (Louisiana Tech and Arkansas). Jackson Does It All Against Oregon State LSU specialist Chris Jackson did it all against Oregon State serving as the Tigers' punter, placekicker as well as handling kickoffs. Jackson averaged 38.7 yards on six punts, while he was 0-of-2 on field goals and 1-of-1 on extra-points. Jackson becomes the first Tiger to handle placekicks and punting for LSU since 1985 when Matt DeFrank did both. Webster Plays Both Ways Against Oregon State LSU senior CB Corey Webster became the first Tiger since Michael Clayton to play both ways in a game when he lined up at wide receiver for one play against Oregon State on Saturday. Webster, who played wide receiver for the Tigers as a freshman in 2001, has practiced on both sides of the ball since last spring. He's also a candidate to return punts or kickoffs for LSU, which could make him the Tigers' first three-way player since Domanick Davis did it early in the season in Webster, who did not have a reception, finished with 7 tackles on defense. Tigers Have Kept Opponents To Less Than 20 Points 32 Times Under Saban By holding Oklahoma to 14 in the BCS National Championship Game last January, the Tigers have now limited their opponents to less than 20 points in 32 of the 52 games they have played under Nick Saban. Under Saban, the Tigers are 29-3 when holding its opponents to fewer than 20 points. Prior to the Florida game, LSU had won 18 straight contests when holding its opponent to less than 20 points. That streak dated back to a 14-3 loss to Arkansas in Little Rock in Of the 32 times that LSU has held its opponent to under 20 points, 16 of those have been when the opponent scored 10 points or less. LSU has also posted four shutouts under Saban. Webster Closing In On LSU Career Interception Mark LSU senior CB Corey Webster enters the game needing only six interceptions to tie Mike Williams' school-record for interceptions at 20. Webster has 14 career interceptions to his credit after picking off seven passes in each of the last two seasons. Webster tied the school-record for interceptions in a single-game with 3 against Florida in Webster leads all active players in the SEC in both interceptions and pass deflections (42). Spears Adds Sack To Run Career Total To 11; Oliver Still At 10 LSU senior DE Marcus Spears ran his career sack total to 11 against Oregon State. Spears, who also forced a fumble, recovered a fumble and broke up a pass against the Beavers, finished with 5 tackles against the Beavers. Spears is now just four sacks shy of tying Corey White for 10th place on LSU's career sack list with 15. DT Melvin Oliver has 10 career sacks to his credit. Rydell Melancon holds the school mark with 25 career sacks from Green's Caught At Least 1 Pass In 18 Straight Games LSU junior WR Skyler Green ran his streak of games with at least one reception to 18 straight games with two catches against Oregon State. As a matter of fact, Green caught at least 2 passes in 15 straight games, including all 14 of LSU's games in Green's career high for receptions came against Louisiana Tech with 9 receptions. For his career, Green has 57 passes for 658 yards and 7 TDs. Green Moves Into 10th Place On LSU Career Punt Return List Skyler Green moved into 10th-place in career punt return yards in LSU with against Oregon State. Green finished with only one return for nine yards against the Beavers, but it was good enough to move past Chris Williams for the 10th spot. Green now has 471 punt return yards. Domanick Davis holds the school record with 1,126 yards on 94 returns from

7 Defensive Line Shuffle One of the philosophies of LSU coach Nick Saban is keeping players fresh by rotating players throughout the game. On Saturday against Oregon State, the Tigers have eight different players see action the defensive line. The four players who started the contest were Marcus Spears, Kyle Williams, Claude Wroten and Melvin Oliver. They were spelled periodically during the game by Ryan Willis, Glen Dorsey, Kirston Pittman and Brian West. Tigers Rush For More Than Opponent In Ninth Straight Games For the ninth consecutive game, LSU had more rushing yards than its opponent as the Tigers had 91 yards on the ground compared to 84 for Oregon State on Saturday. The last time a team gained more yards on the ground than LSU was Florida on Oct. 11, 2003, which happens to be the last time the Tigers have lost a football game. In that game, Florida had 81 yards on the ground compared to just 56 for the Tigers. Webster and Buckles Are Cap and Gown Tigers LSU senior CB Corey Webster is not only an accomplished athlete on the field, but he's also done quite well in the classroom as he recently graduated with a degree in general studies. Webster is joined on the Tiger squad by LB Dorsett Buckels, who finished up his course work over the summer earning a degree in general studies. Four True Freshmen See Action Against Oregon State Four true freshmen made their LSU debut against Oregon State. LB Ali Highsmith and FB Jacob Hester each played on special teams, while Early Doucet made his debut as a wide receiver and Glen Dorsey as a defensive tackle. Dorsey's debut was a memorable one, recovering a fumble on the first play of his career with 6:17 remaining in the first quarter. Wilkerson and Whitworth Are The Rocks On O-Line LSU senior C Ben Wilkerson and junior OT Andrew Whitworth have combined to start 61 games on the offensive line for the Tigers heading into the 2004 season. Whitworth has started every game over the last two years, while Wilkerson started all 13 games a year ago. Dating back to the 2001 season, Wilkerson has started 34 of LSU's last 37 games and the Tigers are 28-6 in those games. Tigers Picked To Win SEC West, Face Georgia In SEC Title Game LSU has been picked by the media to win the SEC Western Division title and then face Georgia in the SEC Championship Game in Georgia garnered 61 first place votes to LSU's 19. Florida picked up five first place votes, while Auburn, and South Carolina each got one first place vote from the media. Tigers Are Well-Represented On National Preseason Watch Lists LSU has at least one player mentioned on a preseason watch list for nine different national awards. The following is a look at which player is listed on the watch list for which national award: Award Butkus Award (top linebacker) Lombardi Award (top lineman/linebacker Outland Trophy (top lineman) Nagurski Award (top defensive player) Rimington Award (top center) Maxwell Award (College Player of the Year) Jim Thorpe Award (top defensive back) Ted Hendricks Award (top defensive end) Walter Camp Player of the Year Doak Walker (top running back) The Lott Trophy (Def. Lawrence, who saw action in 55 games as a second baseman for the Toronto Blue Jays in 2002, was the 16th overall pick in the 1996 draft. West, in his second season with the Tigers, was picked with the 35th selection of the 1999 draft by the Chicago White Sox and advanced briefly to AAA before developing career-ending elbow problems. Lawrence, who is officially listed as a true freshman, is less than two-years younger than LSU defensive backs coach Kirby Smart. Lawrence spent eight years in pro baseball, while Gill spent time in the U.S. Armed Services. 33 Former Tigers on NFL Rosters A total of 33 former LSU football players have made NFL opening day rosters, including eight from the 2003 national championship squad. Highlighting that group is former All-American wide receiver and Baton Rouge native Michael Clayton, who became the 24th first-round draft pick in school history. Clayton was selected 15th overall by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and is projected to make an immediate impact for his new club. Devery Henderson, the second-round selection of the New Orleans Saints, is also slated to see significant time as a rookie wide receiver. Former quarterback Matt Mauck will go into the season as the No. 3 QB for the new-look Denver Broncos. Houston Texans' running back Domanick Davis, the 2003 NFL Rookie of the Year, looks to pick up where he left off last season after leading all rookies with 1,031 rushing yards, despite not starting until Week 6. Seven veterans have joined new teams this year including Kenderick Allen (Giants), Ryan Clark (Redskins), Trev Faulk (Rams), Howard Green (Saints), Mark Roman (Packers), Denard Walker (Raiders) and Brandon Winey (Giants). 10 LSU I T S S A T U R D A Y N I G H T I N Death Valley I'd been warned prior to my first visit to Baton Rouge that the legendary Death Valley mystique was a myth. That assessment couldn't have been more wrong. Tiger Stadium was as loud as any I've ever heard during the dramatic fourth quarter of Saturday's Georgia game, the festivities surrounding it as advertised. The streets were lined with purple and gold. Smoke emanated from the grills in the parking lot. Shouts of "Go Tigers" and "Tiger Bait" echoed from the stadium deep into the heart of campus.
