The 2002 Associated Press National Coach of the Year, Frese comes to College Park after turning around a Minnesota program that was 8-20 in and leading it to a 22-8 record during campaign. Her noteworthy revitalization of the Gopher program came on the heels of a similar feat at Ball, where she took the Cardinals to two back-to-back seasons for only the second time in school history. Terrapin fans are optimistic Maryland s return to glory is just around the corner under Frese, as the Terps hunt down their unprecedented ninth conference crown and a return to the NCAA tournament picture. 2 Maryland Women s Basketball 2 Brenda Frese Brenda Frese has received high praise and numerous accolades during her young coaching career. People have described the 32-year-old head coach as dynamic, overachieving, determined and enthusiastic. The 2002 Associated Press National Coach of the Year, Frese has been a head coach for only three seasons, accumulating an astounding (.655) record, while making amazing turnarounds her calling card. This season, Frese looks to breathe life back into a Terrapin program that went last season and finished eighth in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Athletics Director Debbie Yow couldn t have chosen a better candidate to succeed 27-year head coach Chris Weller than Frese, who after two previous head coaching positions seems poised to be the next legend to lead Maryland to the forefront of women s college basketball once again. One of college basketball s rising stars, Frese fits with Maryland s legacy of success. At Minnesota, she earned AP National Coach of the Year honors as well as Big Ten Coach of the Year recognition for turning the Gopher s 8-20 program into a 22-8 Top 25 contender. One of the biggest one-season turnarounds in NCAA history, Minnesota set a school record with 22 wins and tied for second in the Big Ten with an 11-5 conference mark. Frese also took the Gophers to what was only the school s second NCAA appearance. The Golden Gophers were seeded fifth in the NCAA Tournament and defeated UNLV in the first round of the NCAA Tournament before being eliminated by three points in the second round by North Carolina, a team Frese will have a chance to go head-to-head with this season as part of the ACC slate. Frese s revitalization of the Minnesota program rocked the Big Ten establishment, her team s 10-win improvement in conference play making the biggest one-year improvement in Big Ten history. Moreover, the 11 Big Ten wins were three more than Minnesota totaled in the previous six seasons combined. The Golden Gophers also achieved the highest ranking in school history when Minnesota was listed 14th in the Associated Press Top 25 in mid-february. The Golden Gophers were ranked 18th in the final regular season AP poll. Undoubtedly, Frese had arrived. Frese started her head coaching career during the season at Ball, a program that had gone in the nine seasons prior to her arrival, and guided the Cardinals to a showing Head Coach Arizona 93 Fourth Year Overall in 2000 and garnered Coach of the Year honors in the Mid- American conference. Frese led Ball to a school-best 19-9 mark in , capturing only the school s second back-to-back winning seasons in Ball history. Her final year at Ball, the team received votes in the AP poll, climbing as high as No. 28 in the country. Frese s enthusiam has been contagious for the fans of her teams as well, as support increased significantly at both Minnesota and Ball under her leadership. Buoyed by the best start (9-1) in school history last season, the Golden Gophers finished the season ranked 19th nationally in home attendance average (4,360), including an average of 8,828 fans during the second half of the campaign when the team moved to Williams Arena from the Sports Pavilion. The Gophers attracted the top four crowds in school history, including a record attendance of 12,142 vs. Michigan and a crowd of 11,389 vs. Indiana. Frese s Ball team posted a 10-2 home record and set a single-season home attendance record. She launched her Division I coaching career in 1994 as an assistant coach at Kent University, helping the Golden Flashes to records of 20-8 (1994) and (1995) during her two years there. The Cedar Rapids, native then joined Bill Fennelly s staff at as the Cyclones recruiting coordinator where she assisted in another impressive turnaround, helping ISU to three NCAA Tournament appearances in four years. All told, the Cyclones posted a composite record of with Frese as an assistant, including a record in when recorded the biggest one-season turnaround in school history. In 1997, the Cyclones made their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament, a feat they duplicated in 1998 and 1999 with identical 25-8 records. In 1999, was ranked among the nation s top 25 for the entire season and came within one victory of reaching the Final Four. During her stay at, her recruiting class was ranked among the nation s top 10, and the Cyclones enjoyed tremendous success at the gate, drawing a record crowd of 12,337 vs. Santa Clara in the first round of an NCAA Tournament game played in Ames,, and rewriting s single-season attendance

3 Prospectus Tucson, Ariz., as an assistant coach in charge of recruiting and scouting. Aside from her bachelor s degree in communications from Arizona in 1993, she also earned a master s degree in athletic administration from Kent in mark multiple times. Frese is a 1993 graduate of the University of Arizona, where she was a four-year forward and three-year letterwinner for the Wildcats. When injuries sidelined her during her senior season, she joined the Pima Community College coaching staff in Frese s Division I Coaching Career Year Position, Institution Kent Kent Record Pct Head Ball Head Ball Head Minnesota Head Coaching Record Overall Division I Coaching Record 3 What They Are Saying About Coach Brenda Frese... "Coach Frese has a superb record of achievement as a head coach in two different Division I conferences. She is an overachiever... a dynamic and determined leader as a coach. Over time, she will put our program in a position to compete for the national championship as one of the elite women's basketball programs in the country." Maryland Athletics Director Deborah A. Yow Brenda is one of the bright young coaches in the game today. Maryland is very fortunate. She'll do an unbelievable job of adding to the great tradition that Chris Weller had started there. National Champion Connecticut Head Coach Geno Auriemma Brenda is one of the young dynamic coaches in the game. Obviously, with my being an Old Dominion player, I have known of the Maryland program for years and where it has been and what it has achieved. If you give Brenda time, she will make Maryland one of the top teams not only in the ACC, but I think Maryland has the potential to be a top-10 team for a long time to come. Basketball Hall of Famer and ESPN Basketball Analyst Nancy Lieberman Brenda is a proven coach. I m excited about her youth and enthusiasm. I think she s going to do a tremendous job for Maryland. I congratulate her and I look forward to her being able to make the same type of turnaround she made with the Minnesota program. ESPN Basketball Analyst Vera Jones Brenda is definitely one of the brightest young coaches in America. She s a great student of the game. She will be very successful at Maryland. Arizona Head Coach Joan Bonvicini I think this is a great hire for the University of Maryland. Brenda will do a great job of continuing the great tradition of Maryland basketball. She is outstanding in all areas needed to lead a program to national prominence. She is hard working and extremely organized. She knows what it takes to find players that can succeed at this level. Head Coach Bill Fennelly "I think the University of Maryland made a good choice in hiring Brenda. She is obviously an up-and-coming coach and she did a great job at the University of Minnesota while she was there. She worked for me so I feel I know her a little better than some other people. I think she will do a great job there, I think it was a good hire and I think that five years down the road, the University of Maryland will have a very good team on their hands." Kent Head Coach Bob Lindsay Brenda brought life to the potential that we all knew this team, program and community had. We thank her for bringing that potential to life and wish her well. I know she ll be a great coach at Maryland. Minnesota Women s Athletics Director Chris Voelz

6 The Terrapins 6 Maryland Women s Basketball Preseason Outlook Terps Enter New Era With Frese and Comcast Center First-year head coach Brenda Frese has her work cut out for her this season, inheriting a program that went 12-17, finished eighth in the Atlantic Coast Conference standings and graduated five seniors from it s roster. No stranger to taking over difficult situations, Frese is up for the challenge. It s definitely going to be a rebuilding period for us after losing five seniors, said Frese. We re going to have to use this year to teach and coach fundamentals with so many young, inexperienced players. With that approach, we re really going to be able to start building the foundation of this program. POSITION-BY-POSITION Guards Senior Renneika Razor, one of two returning Terrapin starters, will be asked to carry most of the load during the season with the departure of All-ACC guard and No. 7 all-time scorer Marché Strickland. Razor brings a dynamic, athletic presence showcased by quick hands on the steal and a slashing style down the lane. A 2002 ACC all-defense team choice, the New York native averaged 2.1 steals per game and returns as the Terps top scorer (8.2 points per game) and rebounder (4.5 rebounds per game). Joining Razor at the guard spot is fellow senior Terri Daniels. Daniels, a graduate of nearby St. Mary s in Annapolis, is one of the Terps best threepoint shooters in program history. Daniels sits at the No. 5 spot for 3-point field goals made (59) and attempted (150). She is also among the Terps best ever in 3-point field goal percentage (.393). Frese has stated the leadership of both senior guards, as well as classmate Brie Jackson will be a key part to developing such a young team. Junior point guard Vicki Brick returns as the Terps floor general and with increased shooting confidence, will be able to both distribute the ball as well as score points herself. Brick took her second tour of duty as Maryland s starting point guard last season after a one-year rehabilitation of a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Brick returned strong as ever, and remains one of the most physically fit Terps, which will benefit her on-court time. Anesia Smith rounds out the Terps guard rotation, which will be the team s strongest area this season. Smith exploded in her first two collegiate games, averaging 18.5 points per game and giving Terrapin fans a glimpse of her potential. With her quickness and agility, Smith will be one of the Terps harassers on defense and will add to her shooting ability a slashing, penetrating angle to her game. Centers Playing at both forward and center is junior Crystal Washington. The six foot, two-inch Washington has shown marked improvement with increased playing time last season. With the departure of No. 6 all-time scorer and top 10 all-time rebounder Deedee Warley, she should see more court time than ever this season. Past Washington s presence, the Terps interior is a largely unknown commodity and will be Frese s biggest challenge. A trio of six-footers dawn Terps uniforms this season for the first time: Charmaine Carr, Angel Ross, and Vanessa Ruffin.Six-foot, five-inch Carr should have the most impact, but all three will have to hit the ground running in order for the Terps to be successful this season in the incredibly competitive ACC. Forwards Joining Washington at the forward position, senior Brie Jackson rounds out her Terrapin career this season on the blocks. Jackson can provide most of the intangibles to the Te r p s and will n e e d to be a leader for the transition to be a smooth one. New Jersey freshman Chrissy Fisher will, like Carr, need to develop quickly for the Terps. With the departure of four post players last season, Maryland s development into a complete team will hinge on the forward and center positions and how quickly the young players at those spots come along. I really think concentrating on the fundamentals is a step we want to take first and foremost with this group, especially being so young, commented Frese. Overall, I m an offensive-oriented type of coach. I like to score a lot of points, which will definitely be our game plan eventually, but we may need to become more defense-oriented depending on the strengths of our team and how our incoming freshmen will be able to contribute as well. SCHEDULE In addition to the always-challenging ACC schedule, the Terrapins have a nonconference schedule complete with national powers and local rivals to round out their schedule. I m excited that we have quite a few home games at the new Comcast Center, and to host our own tournament will be a big advantage, said Frese. We ve got a tough non-conference schedule, going to Penn as well as playing Virginia Tech at home.
