3 BISON SPORTS ARENA NDSU in the BSA Home Court Record T he Bison Sports Arena was constructed in 1970 for a cost of $.1 million to house the Department of Athletics and the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation. With a seating capacity of up to 5,80 fans for college basketball games and wrestling matches, and 1,851 for indoor track meets, the Bison Sports Arena has hosted several premier events. The arena has been home to five NCAA Division II national wrestling championships, five Division II women s basketball national tournaments, one Division II volleyball championship, and many North Central Conference and high school indoor track and field championships. It was the site of the first two NCAA Division II national indoor track and field championships and a third in 199. The 150,69 square feet of space is divided into three levels in a building measuring 20 feet wide and 8 feet high. A main floor of 102,000 square feet includes a wood basketball floor and an all-weather artificial surface for basketball games, track meets, wrestling meets, tennis and volleyball matches. our basketball courts can be converted into six volleyball courts, 1 badminton courts, or three tennis courts. Main floor facilities also include a six-lane, 200-meter oval track and 1 straight-away lanes. Offices, lockers and classrooms are also located on the main floor including a well-equipped training room with a walk-in whirlpool bath. A seven-lane swimming pool, 75 feet in length, 1 feet deep at the diving end and four feet deep at the shallow end, is located in a second section of the main floor. Separated from the upper concourse by an all-glass wall, the pool area can seat several hundred spectators. The second-level activity deck includes racquetball courts, the McCormick Wrestling Complex, and an extensive weight room. In addition to the many national events staged here, the Bison Sports Arena has been a home to successful basketball campaigns for the Bison. The Thundering Herd has compiled a record in seasons since the arena entertained its first game in That first game was a 9-79 victory over Minnesota-Morris, and it kicked off a new era that has produced eight seasons of home basketball with one loss or less and a.759 winning percentage. 4 BISON STA Saul Phillips Seventh Season Age: 1 Born: October 11, 1972 Hometown: Reedsburg, Spouse: Nicole Children: One daughter, Jordan, and two sons, Charlie and Benjamin Education: Bachelor s degree in business and psychology, -Platteville, 1996 Saul Phillips recently completed his sixth season as head men s basketball coach at. He was hired as the 22nd coach in program history on March 26, Phillips directed to its first Summit League championship and NCAA Division I tournament appearance in He was one of 10 finalists for the Hugh Durham Mid-Major Coach of the Year award. NDSU has been on the rise since graduating four starters from that NCAA team. The Bison won 11, 1 and 17 games before a 2-win season and Summit League title game appearance in 201. NDSU has played in the College Basketball Invitational two straight years. Phillips has a record through his first six seasons as a collegiate head coach, including a 6- record in The Summit League. The Bison finished 2-10 and placed third in the league with a 12- mark last season. The 1-year-old Phillips was an assistant coach at for three seasons under before being elevated to the head job when Tim Miles was hired by Colorado State. Before coming to in 200, Phillips was the director of basketball operations for three years at, where he handled the dayto-day scheduling, coordinated travel, budgeting and on-campus recruiting for Bo Ryan s staff. Phillips spent two years as an assistant coach under Ryan at Milwaukee ( ) and two years as an assistant at Lake Superior State ( ) under Marty McDermott. A native of Reedsburg, Wis., Phillips graduated from -Platteville with a degree in business and psychology in He played basketball for four seasons at UWP under Ryan and was captain of the Pioneers undefeated national championship team in He went on to become a graduate assistant at Wayne (Neb.) 5 David Richman Will Ryan Associate David Richman is in his seventh year as associate head men s basketball coach and his 11th year overall at. Richman, 5, was a Bison assistant coach for two seasons before being elevated to associate head coach under Saul Phillips in. He also spent two seasons as a graduate assistant at NDSU and was an assistant coach at College of Science for one year. A native of Wahpeton, N.D., Richman attended NDSCS for two years and was a member of the 1998 Region 1 championship team. He continued his education at NDSU and Northern Iowa, working as a student assistant to coaches Ray iacoletti, reg McDermott and Tim Miles. Richman graduated from in 2002 with a degree in physical education and completed a master s degree in sport and recreation management at NDSU in He and his wife, Stephanie, reside in West, with their four daughters, Mallorie, Brynlie, Kenlie and Ellie. Ryan, 5, is the oldest son of head coach Bo Ryan. He played basketball for his father on -Platteville s NCAA Division III national championship teams in 1998 and 1999, and also on his father s team at Milwaukee in Will Ryan graduated from Milwaukee in December 2002 with a bachelor s degree in educational studies and youth leadership. He joined the staff in as a volunteer assistant and spent five seasons with the Badgers. He also was head coach for the Swing AAU team in Will and his wife, Emily, reside in argo with their sons, Owen and Liam.
