The Leathernecks took two more shots than South Dakota State in the contest (53-51), but only shot 32.1 percent from the floor compared to the Jackrabbits 51 percent. The Jackrabbits were also able to score 30 points in the paint and as well as scoring 31 points off of Western s turnovers. Lewis led the Western offense with a game-high 17 points and seven rebounds. Jordon O Brien added nine points and Lord contributed eight points. Borgertpoepping added six points, five rebounds and four steals in the contest. Scouting The Bison are coming off a win on the road at IUPUI. had three players score in double figures, led by Inger Hodgson s 15 points. Hannah Linz and Ashley Samuelson added 12 and 10 points, respectively. The Bison scored 30 points off of the Jaguar s 24 turnovers as well as recording 14 steals in the game led by Hodgson s game-high six steals. IUPUI out rebounded by nine in contest (34-25). is led by Janae Burich who is averaging a team-best 11.8 points per game and 5.0 rebounds per game. Hodgson is averaging 11.4 points per game while Abby Plucker has chipped in 8.4 points per game and 4.7 rebounds per game. Against the Bison The Bison won all three meetings between the two teams last season. Western lost to North Dakota State in the opening round of the conference tournament last season, 46-43, on March 8. Amanda Walker led the team with 15 points while Anneloes Kodde and Jordon O Brien added six points each. 2 2 Game Notes Continued Season-high points against South Dakota State The Leathernecks posted a season-high 53 points against South Dakota State on Dec. 5. The team s previous season high was 50 points as the Leathernecks defeated Northern Illinois, 50-48, on Nov. 17. Scoring from the charity stripe Western connected on 16 free throws against South Dakota State, a season-high for the Leathernecks. The team shot 72.7 percent from the foul line, going 16-for-22 from the line. League leading defense The Leathernecks are only allowing 63.7 points per game, the best scoring defense in The Summit League. On two occasions the Leathernecks have held their opponents to a season low. Western held Northern Illinois (3-4) to a season-low 48 points. The Huskies are currently averaging 68.0 points per game. The Leathernecks also held Jacksonville State (1-7) to a season-low 43 points, 12.1 points lower than their season average. Among league leaders in steals In addition to having the best scoring defense in the conference, Western averages 9.14 steals per game, the third best in the conference. The Leathernecks posted a season-high 16 steals against Navy on Nov. 28. Western had their second-best outing in steals on Dec. 5 in their conference opener against South Dakota State will 11 steals. Borgertpoepping one of the league s best guards Junior Anne Borgertpoepping has proven this year that she is one of the better point guards in the league as she has the third-most assists (23) in the league as well as the fourth-most steals (17). Lewis continues to lead offense Junior Erica Lewis continues lead the Leatherneck offense, averaging a team-best 12.1 points per game. The Florissant, Mo., native recorded her first career double-double in the team s win over Jacksonville State with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Against South Dakota State, Lewis tied her season-high with a game-high 17 points, going 5- for-16 from the floor and 7-for-10 from the charity stripe. O Brien in the record books O Brien currently ranks seventh all-time in history with 87 three-point baskets made, four away from taking over sixth place. She also ranks fifth all-time in history in three-point field goals attempted with 269. Crane signs Evans head women s basketball coach Leslie Crane has announced that Rachel Evans has signed a national letter of intent to play at Western next season. This is What is a Leatherneck? University holds the distinction of being the only nonmilitary institution to officially have its nickname derived from a branch of the military service. The school began use of the Marine Corps official nickname, The Fighting Leathernecks, in 1927 when thenathletic director and head baseball, basketball and football coach Ray Rock Hanson was granted permission by the U.S. Navy, based on his status as a Marine hero, to use the Marine s official seal and bulldog mascot along with their nickname. In June 2009, the female student-athletes were unified with their male counterparts when the University decided to begin using Leathernecks as the school s lone nickname. Rocky the Mascot first mascot made its first appearance on Oct. 10, 1959 at the Homecoming football game. One day earlier, the English bulldog was purchased by the Student Government Association and officially named Colonel Rock at the Homecoming bonfire. The nickname was chosen from more than 200 entries submitted in a campus-wide contest. The winning entry was submitted by Richard Stevenson, a junior from Nauvoo, Ill., who chose the name to honor former coach and athletics director Ray Rock Hanson. After Colonel Rock passed away in February 1966 during his second cancer operation, Captain Dale A. Luster, a recruiter from the Marine Corps League of Chicago, was instrumental in assisting the Corps purchase of Colonel Rock II, a.k.a. Rocky. In 1973, with the retirement of Rocky, a costumed version took over for the live dog, but English bulldogs have frequented football games since. Rocky continues to cheer his team, ignite the crowd, joust opponents mascots, plead with officials and bring smiles to the faces of many fans. The 6-foot-3 forward hails from Noblesville, Ind., where she was Westfield High School s leading scoring (10.4 points per game) and rebounder (8.1 rebounds per game) during the campaign. She also blocked a team-high 32 shots and dished out 27 assists, leading her team to a 16-5 overall record and third-place finish in the Hoosier Crossroads Conference. Tough schedule in The Leathernecks will face teams from eight different conferences, including teams from the Big XII and the Big Ten conferences. Three of their opponents in No. 3 Ohio State, Purdue and South Dakota State participated in the 2009 NCAA Women s Basketball Tournament and two other opponents in Oklahoma State and Oakland participated in the WNIT Postseason Tournament. Up Next The Leathernecks will host St. Francis (Ill.) on Thursday, Dec. 10, in non-league action at 7 p.m. before hosting Illinois-Springfield on Saturday, Dec. 12.
