2 REVIEW QUICK FACTS OUTLOOK COACHES PLAYERS REVIEW RECORDS OPPONENTS SAMFORD YOUNG BULLDOGS GAIN EXPERIENCE IN TURBULENT 2006 SEASON W hile injuries plagued the Bulldog squad, the 2006 season turned out to be a year of learning and rebuilding for the Samford University volleyball team. With two key players benched by injuries, several Bulldogs had the opportunity to step into new positions while others took on new leadership roles. With all but three Bulldogs having one year or less of collegiate play, skeptics said this young squad was not experienced enough to produce. However, the Bulldogs showed that youth does not always mean inexperience. The season started slowly as the Bulldogs dropped a pair of matches at the Magic/Music City Classic (Aug. 26). Samford fell, 3-1, to both Lipscomb University and Belmont University. Jackie Jaszcz (7) and the Bulldogs huddle before one of last season s matches. Kirstein Sosnowski earned a spot on the All- Tournament team with her season-high hitting percentage of.591 ( ). Samford spent Labor Day Weekend in Orlando, Fla., playing in the University of Central Florida Tournament. The team faced Central Florida, Utah Valley State College and Furman, but picked up three more losses to start the season 0-5. However, freshman Sheridan Stangohr landed on the UCF All- Tournament team with her season-high hitting percentage of.600 (9-0-15) against Furman. In its first home match of the season, Samford took three of four games from Chattanooga (Sept. 6), chalking up its first win of the season. Freshman Katie Luckman recorded her first career double-double against the Mocs, while Luckman tallied 10 kills and 16 digs. The Bulldogs then traveled to Mobile, Ala., to play in the University of South Alabama Jaguar Classic (Sept. 8 9). Samford went head-to-head with Auburn, dropping a close match to the Tigers. The Bulldogs split play the second day losing to South Alabama and grabbing their first tournament win over Southeastern Louisiana. Stangohr became the only Bulldog for the 2006 season to be named to two All-Tournament teams when she was named to the USA Jaguar Classic team for putting up 11 kills of 32 attempts against South Alabama. Stangohr was not the only Samford player to have an outstanding game against the Jaguars. Redshirt freshman Sarah Gardner recorded a career-high 29 digs, just eight digs shy of a school record. Sosnowski and sophomore Jackie Jaszcz also posted doubledoubles against South Alabama with Sosnowski having 17 kills and 17.5 points, and Jaszcz having 59 assists and 18 digs. Samford s youth and inexperience caught up with them as they returned home to take on cross-town rival Birmingham-Southern. The Bulldogs suffered an upsetting 3-1 loss to the Panthers but bounced back quickly, winning three of their next four matches. In the Samford Barber s Classic, the Bulldog s first opponent was a very good Charlotte team. The two teams went five games before the 49ers come out with the 3-2 win. In the second day of competition, the Bulldogs hosted UNC Asheville and Louisiana Monroe, winning both matches, 3-0. Two Samford players made their way onto the Samford Barber s Classic All-Tournament team with exceptional performances. Jaszcz tallied 45 assists and SAMFORD VOLLEYBALL

Sophomore Sara Sears grabbed 16 kills and 19 points against Charlotte, 12 kills and nine digs against UNC Asheville, and nine kills and 19 digs against Louisiana Monroe. Before beginning the conference schedule, the Bulldogs faced Kennesaw State. The Owls of Kennesaw State played their first season of volleyball in school history, and Samford was honored to be one of their first opponents. The Bulldogs won their third straight game over the Owls, 3-1. The win did not come easily, as Samford s setter, Jackie Jaszcz was sidelined by a season-ending knee injury. Sophomore Courtney Gay stepped in and took over the position. Samford lost its next five matches, taking to the road to face Ohio Valley Conference foes Austin Peay, Tennessee State, Tennessee Tech and eventual conference champion Jacksonville State, and returning home to host Tennessee State again. Although the Bulldogs came up empty-handed, three Samford players turned in tremendous performances at Austin Peay (Sept. 22). Gay posted 55 assists in her first full game as the Bulldogs setter, and freshman Alyssa Trimpe turned in 15 kills off 45 attempts. The Bulldogs added one more win to the schedule when they hosted the Governors of Austin Peay. Samford swept its opponents in three straight games, giving the team a boost of confidence to head into the last 10 matches of the year. The next five weekends were backand-forth for the Samford team, playing a weekend at home in Seibert Hall and the next on the road before returning to host another pair of teams. The Bulldogs first hosted Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky (Oct ). With losses to both the Eagles and the Colonels, the Bulldogs went on a 10-game skid to end the season. With losses to Eastern Illinois, Southeast Missouri, Jacksonville State, Tennessee Tech, Murray State and Tennessee Martin, Samford ended the season at 11th place in the conference. Samford hosted Eastern Illinois in the final game of the season (Nov. 11), ending the year on a bittersweet note. The Bulldogs and Panthers played five games before Eastern Illinois walked away with the win. Sears played a stellar five games, landing a season-high 25 kills off 58 attempts. Before the match began, Samford Head Coach Michelle Durban and her Bulldog squad recognized senior Callaway Logan for her hard work and dedication throughout her four years at Samford. Although Logan was benched by an injury for her senior season, her leadership did not falter from the sidelines. Despite the imperfect record, the 2006 season was highlighted by a number of individual accomplishments. After stepping in as setter midseason, having never played the position before, Gay racked up 571 assists to lead the team in that category while ranking third in digs with 262. She also ranked ninth in the conference in assists with 536. The freshman Bulldogs also had incredible accomplishments in their first collegiate season. Trimpe and Stangohr ranked second on the team in kills (205). Trimpe also ranked fourth in digs (211) and points (223.5). Stangohr led the Bulldogs in total blocks with 95.0 (14-81) and ranked fifth in the same category in the conference with 62.0 (13-49). Luckman ranked third on the team in aces with 20. Redshirt freshman Gardner led the team in aces with 55 and digs with 412, just missing an all-time digs record by five. In 13 matches, Jaszcz racked up 503 assists to rank second place on the 2006 assists list. Sears led the team in kills again, totaling 300, while also leading the Bulldogs Angela Dempski in points with She also ranked second in aces (22) and digs (309). Junior Angela Dempski led the team, alongside Stangohr, in block solos (14) while ranking 10th in the conference in total blocks with 32.0 (8-24). Samford ranked among Ohio Valley Conference teams at the seventh-best blocking team with total blocks (26-159). Even though 2006 proved to be a rocky season for Samford, the Bulldogs look to 2007 to build on the foundation laid by this young but experienced team.
