New-look Falcon Stadium Fans may not recognize the new-look Falcon Stadium unless they have been long-time ticket holders. Nearly 6,000 seats have been removed to restore the stadium to it old look from over a decade ago. The new capacity stands at 46,692 which is more in line for what the parking at the stadium can support. The athletic department has made several other changes to improve entrance into the stadium. A quick look at these changes follows: No food or drink allowed of any kind. There are exceptions for those with medical conditions and for infants. The removal of nearly 6,000 seats has allowed for more vendors and a wider variety of food and drink selections. Fans communicated to the athletic department confusion on what was allowed and not allowed last year and this new policy will speed entry through the gates. Stadium gates will open two hours prior to kickoff instead of two and one-half hours. This allows fans to enjoy tailgating more or to take more advantage of the Falcon Fan Fest which opens three hours prior to kickoff. Falcon Fan Fest is located in front of the stadium. Seatbacks 18 inches or less are permitted. Seatbacks will be permitted as long as they don't require a search due to excessive pockets and compartments. A Department of Defense express line has been established at Gate #2A for DoD identification card holders. All card holders with bags are subject to search for prohibited items. Last week Air Force saved its best for last, as the Falcons defeated Washington, 20-17, at Qwest Field in Seattle, Wash. The Falcons got off to slow start offensively, but when it mattered most put together three straight scoring drives to win the game. Washington s Evan Knudson opened the scoring with a 40-yard field goal in the first quarter to give the Huskies a 3-0 lead. Scott Eberle tied the game with his first-career field goal in the second quarter, a 40-yarder. James Sims put the Huskies back in front with a one-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to make it Air Force answered with another Eberle field goal (27 yards) to cut the lead to Washington quarterback Isaiah Stanback hit Cody Ellis with a 27-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter to give Washington a commanding 17-6 lead with 10:43 remaining. The Air Force offense faced an ugly task following the kickoff, starting the next drive at its own one-yard line following a muffed kickoff return by Greg Kirkwood. The senior receiver would make up for the mistake with the play of the day, an 84-yard touchdown catch to put the Falcons within reach, 17-13, with 9:34 remaining. After forcing a Washington punt, the Falcons put together a text-book drive, going 83 yards in 14 plays and 5:21 to score the game-winner with 34 second remaining on a one-yard run by quarterback Shaun Carney. Kirkwood made the key play of the drive, catching a 14-yard pass on third-and-nine from the 15 to set up first-and-goal at the one. The Falcons used a balanced attack on offense, rushing for 218 yards and passing for 207. Carney led the way with 69 yards rushing. He also hit nine of 14 passes for 107 yards. Backup Adam Fitch rushed for 21 yards and hit four of eight passes for 100 yards, including the 84-yarder to Kirkwood. Jacobe Kendrick chipped in 51 yards rushing, while his backup Ryan Williams added 27 yards on seven carries. Kirkwood capped off his first-career start with six catches for 134 yards and a touchdown. He entered the game with three career catches for 65 yards. Defensively, the Falcons were led by linebacker Overton Spence s nine tackles, including three for loss. Bobby Giannini chipped in with nine tackles while John Taibi added eight. The Falcons held Washington to 371 total yards. Stanback led the Huskies hitting 19 of 27 passes for 242 yards. Halfback Louis Rankin chipped in with 112 yards rushing on 23 carries. 4 Last week s game notes Team Air Force scored in its 146th consecutive games dating back to the 1992 Liberty Bowl. The streak is the second longest in the conference and ninth longest in the nation. With the win, Air Force is now in season openers. The Falcons are also 17-5 in season openers under Fisher DeBerry. The win is also the third straight over Washington. AFA beat Washington in 1998 (45-25) and in 1999 (31-21). Air Force's 99-yard scoring drive in the fourth quarter ties the longest in school history. Air Force's 84-yard touchdown pass is the fourth longest pass play in school history. It is the longest since Brian Knorr, currently an assistant coach on the staff, hit Mike Brown with an 85-yard scoring pass vs. Utah in The victory is Air Force's first over a Pac-10 team since a win at Cal on Sept. 21, The last time Air Force won when it trailed at the end of the third quarter was Sept. 20, 2003 at home against Wyoming. Wyoming led after three quarters and Air Force won the game Individual Air Force had seven players make the first start of their career vs. Washington: HB Chad Hall, FB Jacobe Kendrick, HB Justin Handley, PK Scott Eberle, WR Greg Kirkwood, LB Jared Baxley and DE Erik Anderson. Kicker Scott Eberle attempted and made the first field goal (40 yards) of his career in the second quarter. Falcon receivers Greg Kirkwood and Jason Brown set new career-highs for receptions and yards. Kirkwood had six catches for 134 yards while Brown had four catches for 52 yards. Kirkwood had just three catches all last season, while Brown had nine last year. The 84-yard pass play from Adam Fitch to Greg Kirkwood is the longest play of both players' careers. Kirkwood's previous long catch was a 33-yard reception last season vs. New Mexico. The previous long play of Fitch's career was a 45-yard pass vs. Wyoming last season. Greg Kirkwood's 134 yards receiving today are the most of his career. It is also the most receiving yards for a Falcon since Ryan Fleming caught eight passes for 163 yards vs. Notre Dame in Jason Brown's 52 yards receiving is a career-high. His previous best was 45 yards last season vs. Wyoming. Overton Spence posted a career-high nine tackles. His previous high was seven against Eastern Washington last season. Quarterbacks Shaun Carney and Adam Fitch each threw for over 100 yards on 13 of 22 passing. Carney was nine of 14 for 107 yards while Fitch was four of eight for 100 yards. Blocked kicks Most of the time if a team blocked two kicks in a season, it s been pretty successful. Not at Air Force. The Falcons have made blocking kicks an art form. Air Force has blocked 89 kicks since 1990 to rank second nationally behind Virginia Tech. The Falcons blocked only two kicks in 2004 to snap an impressive streak. AFA had blocked at least three kicks in 14 consecutive years. 6 Offensive notes Air Force s offense was great when it needed to be in last week s win over Washington. The unit scored on its last three possessions, including a field goal and two touchdowns. The Falcons had 31 plays for 252 yards on their final three possessions despite the fact their average starting position was the nine yard line in the fourth quarter. Air Force rushed for 48 yards and passed for 139 yards on the final three drives. Defensive notes The Air Force defense looks to have improved significantly from last year. Though the team has played only one game, Air Force gave up just 17 points on the road in the season opener vs. Washington. Last year, Air Force allowed 31.1 points per game. The Falcons gave up yards per game in 2004 and allowed just 371 against the Huskies. AFA national power in rushing Air Force has been one of the most dominant rushing teams in college football since Fisher DeBerry took over in The team has ranked among the nation s top 10 a remarkable 19 times and the top five 15 times. In 2002, the Falcons won the school s first national rushing title. Air Force has won 21 conference rushing titles, including 19 under DeBerry. The Falcons won the Mountain West Conference title and ranked fourth nationally last season with a average. Carney completed 91 of 149 passes for 1,315 yards with 11 touchdowns and six interceptions. His quarterback efficiency rating of would rank second in the conference, but he lacked enough pass attempt to qualify for the conference and national statistics.
