3 CALDWELL COLLEGE SEASON PREVIEW With two all-central Atlantic Collegiate Conference players among four starters returning from last season, the Caldwell College women s basketball team is optimistic about the campaign. The Cougars, who were and advanced to the semifinals of the CACC Tournament last year, also have added some talented newcomers to bolster an already deep and versatile roster. But with a difficult schedule both in and out of conference, head coach Linda Cimino knows not to take anything for granted. We are playing a lot of the top teams in the East Region early in the season, Cimino said. I think we could struggle against the more experienced teams until our new players get comfortable in our system, but I expect us to be able to compete with anyone once we are playing our best. Until the younger players acclimate to the college game, the Cougars can lean on their two first team all-cacc performers: senior guard Torey Jones and junior forward Jeanette Anderson. Jones also made the Daktronics all-east Region second team after averaging 15.6 points per game in A dynamic scorer and playmaker, she enters this season with 1,311 career points, good for eighth all-time at Caldwell. Her ability to score from the perimeter along with being able to create off the dribble has made her one of the top performers in the conference and the region. Anderson brings a different skill set to the Cougars. At 6-foot-1, Anderson is a dominating force in the paint who almost averaged a doubledouble last season with team highs of 15.8 points and 9.9 rebounds per contest. In addition to her low-post skills, her ability to run the court and her soft hands make her an effective option in the Cougars transition offense. Torey and Jeanette have been successful in the league and region for so long, that teams are forced to focus on stopping them, Cimino said. Since their games are so different, our opponents usually have to choose to stop one or the other, and that opens things up for everyone else. Senior Gillian Felix joins Anderson in the frontcourt to give Caldwell a pair of solid post players. A 6-foot-2 center, Felix ranks second all-time at Caldwell with 125 blocks, and has averaged at least 6.5 rebounds per game in each of her three seasons. Sophomore Emily Caswell turned in a decent freshman season, averaging 5.5 points and 3.2 rebounds in 28 games. She has the shooting range and versatility to contribute at guard as well as in the frontcourt. Like Caswell, junior Shantel McNeil will see time at both forward and guard. An athletic player who defends and rebounds well, McNeil provides experience off the bench. Sophomore Taylor Baggs, who has battled injuries, and Joy-Divine Morrison will add low-post scoring, rebounding and size to the front line. The lone newcomer at forward is Lisa Rovatsos, a three-time allgroup 4 player from Bayonne (N.J.) High School. Rovatsos, the two-time Hudson County Player of the Year, is a strong post player who excels around the basket. TOREY TOREY JONES GILLIAN FELIX CHELSEA LOSCALZO
4 SEASON PREVIEW Caldwell has several talented and versatile players at the guard position other than Jones, making the backcourt one of the team s strengths. Sophomore guard Jessica Coscia had a good freshman season at point guard, leading the CACC in assists with 4.6 per game. A hard worker with a strong understanding of the game, Coscia started 21 of Caldwell s 28 games last season. In a win over NYIT, she dished out 14 assists, the most by a CACC player last season. Senior guard Chelsea Loscalzo s contributions to the team over the past three years are less apparent to those outside the program, but she has been an important part of the team for many reasons. A good threepoint shooter and a knowledgeable player, she has emerged as a team leader and an excellent teammate. Loscalzo also has received CACC All- Academic honors twice. Sophomore guard Devin Gold was showing signs of becoming an offensive threat when her freshman season came to an abrupt end with an injury in her ninth game. A healthy Gold gives Caldwell another scoring option on the perimeter. Fellow sophomore Morgan Thompson has threepoint shooting range and will provide depth in the backcourt. The three newcomers at guard will provide Cimino with plenty of options. Junior Marielle Duryea is a combo guard who transferred to Caldwell after two seasons at Adelphi University. A good defender who plays the game at a fast pace, Duryea also adds scoring punch off the bench. Freshman Nicole Angelo earned all-south Jersey and Parochial A honors while at Camden Catholic High School. In addition to ball handling and passing skills, Angelo is a good shooter who will be a scoring threat at the point guard position. At 5-foot-10, freshman guard Fahime Farzanessa possesses excellent size and athleticism. A native of Cologne, Germany, Farzanessa is a solid offensive player and a physical defender who was a member of the U16 German National Team. The aforementioned tough schedule begins at the St. Thomas Aquinas Tournament, where the Cougars will face the University of D.C., who qualified for the East Region Tournament, and the host Spartans. Northeast-10 foes Assumption College and Stonehill College figure to be among the top five teams in the region this year, while the University of Bridgeport and East Stroudsburg University are emerging programs with experienced rosters. It s always been our philosophy to play the best teams in the region, Cimino said. The only way to be included among them is to play them, and we think we match up well with those top teams. Caldwell was picked to win the North Division in the coaches poll, with Felician, Dominican and Bloomfield not far behind. Nationally-ranked Holy Family University, who won the CACC Tournament a year ago, is favored in the South Division. The conference has improved from top to bottom, and there won t be any easy games, Cimino said. We re focused on peaking as a team for the CACC Tournament. If we do that, we ll have an excellent opportunity to advance and possibly win a conference championship. JEANETTE ANDERSON ANDERSON EMILY CASWELL CASWELL JESSICA COSCIA
5 COACH LINDA CIMINO Linda Cimino begins her seventh season as coach of the Caldwell College women s basketball team, having built the Cougars into a contender in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference and the East Region. During her time at Caldwell, Cimino has led the Cougars to the semifinals of the conference tournament twice, while also seeing her team ranked both regionally and nationally for the first time since Caldwell became an NCAA Division II member in After taking over a program that was over the previous three seasons, Cimino has compiled a record in her six years and is poised to reach the 100-victory milestone. I m proud of what we ve been able to accomplish so far, and it s a credit to the players we ve had in our program, Cimino said. We ve worked hard to get to where we are now, and we are hungry and focused on getting better every day to achieve our goals of winning a conference championship and making the NCAA Regional Tournament. The Cougars had a breakout season in with a 21-6 campaign, matching the school record for victories and advancing to the semifinals of the CACC Tournament for the first time since Caldwell also tied for the CACC North Division title with a league record of The victory over Felician in the quarterfinals of the CACC Tournament was the team s first win in the conference tourney since This success did not go unnoticed, as Caldwell was included in the East Region rankings for the first time in the program s history. Last season the Cougars returned to the CACC Tournament semifinals, finishing second in the North and beating Philadelphia in the quarterfinals en route to a record. After seeing small improvements during her first season, Cimino led the Cougars to an record and the program s first berth in the ECAC Tournament in The team also returned to the CACC Tournament after not qualifying in The 18-win campaign ranked Caldwell among the most improved teams in the nation. In , the Cougars finished third in the CACC North and advanced to the conference tournament for the second season in a row after compiling a record of overall and an 8-9 mark in league play. The season saw the Cougars go and tie for second in the CACC North with an 11-8 conference mark. Caldwell also was included in the national rankings, receiving votes early in the season after upsetting ninth-ranked Stonehill. Cimino has demonstrated her ability to recruit talented players in building the program into a contender. Kirsty Leedham became the first women s basketball player at Caldwell since joining Division II to be named all-region, making the Daktronics all-east Region second team in Torey Jones also earned all-region honors in both 2011 and 2012 while making the all-cacc first team each season. Cimino s recruiting classes also yielded three consecutive CACC Rookies of the Year in Kaitlyn Lambert (2009), Jones (2010) and Jeanette Anderson (2011). Now that the program has been revitalized, Cimino recognizes the program s potential to be competitive in the CACC and the East Region. Because of the administration, the facilities, the strong academics and the players we have here now, Caldwell College is very attractive to recruits, Cimino said. We ve been successful in expanding our recruiting efforts to target players from other areas, including Rhode Island, New York and Massachusetts, as well as international players. Cimino, who coached for five years at the high school and junior college level, came to Caldwell in 2006 after serving as an assistant women s basketball coach at Adelphi University, her alma mater, the previous season. Cimino began coaching at Adelphi in August 2005 as an assistant coach under Kelley Watts, helping the Panthers to an overall record of and a third-place finish in the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference. Prior to her stint at Adelphi, Cimino was the varsity girls basketball coach for three seasons at Calhoun High School in Merrick, N.Y., where she also coached volleyball for four years. Cimino began her coaching career in 2001 as the head women s basketball coach at Queensborough Community College in Bayside, N.Y. Cimino graduated from Adelphi in 2001 with a Bachelor s degree in Health and Physical Education, and earned her Master s degree in Health Education from Adelphi in She also received a Master s degree in Administration from Touro College in May of She was a health teacher for five years, including four years at Calhoun High School, where she also was an Adaptive Physical Education teacher. Cimino is an American Heart Association CPR/AED instructor and a member of both the Women s Basketball Coaches Association and the Basketball Coaches Association of New York. She also served a three-year term on the NCAA Regional Advisory Committee for the women s basketball East Region. She currently serves on the women s soccer Regional Advisory Committee and is a member of the NCAA Division II USA Today Coaches Poll Committee.
6 ASSISTANT COACHES Tim Nellegar Caldwell College 00 (3rd season) Tim Nellegar, a 2000 graduate of Caldwell College, returns to his alma mater as an assistant women s basketball coach. Nellegar, who was an assistant for the Cougars from 2001 to 2003, has been coaching in the high school ranks for the past eight years. A former tennis player and student manager at Caldwell, Nellegar was an assistant coach for the men s basketball team under Mark A. Corino before joining the women s coaching staff in That year, the Cougars placed second in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference and earned a bid to the NAIA National Tournament. The following year, Caldwell won the CACC Tournament for the second time in the history of the program. Nellegar served as an assistant coach for the Clifton High School boys basketball team for one year before spending five seasons as the head coach for the Clifton girls team. For the past three years, he coached the junior varsity girls basketball team at Bloomfield High School, leading his team to a 19-0 record and an Essex County championship last season. A communications and political science major while at Caldwell, Nellegar was a four-year member of the men s tennis team, earning Academic All-American honors in He has worked at McKinley School in Newark, N.J., for the past 12 years, and currently serves as the technology coordinator. A native of Bloomfield, N.J., Nellegar and his wife Jennifer, also a 2000 graduate of Caldwell, and their daughter Kaitlyn live in Lake Hiawatha, N.J. Kristen Koehler Marist College 97 (1st season) Kristen Koehler is entering her first season as an assistant coach on the sidelines after an extensive career in administration in college and professional sports. Koehler recently married Caldwell alum Hasani Whitfield and they reside in Rahway, N.J. Head Coach Linda Cimino (continued) Off the basketball court, Cimino has made an impact on campus as an associate athletic director and Senior Woman Administrator. She coordinates the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), which is active on campus and in the community. In each of the past six years, Caldwell s SAAC raised over $1,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Through SAAC, Cimino also organizes the community engagement efforts for each team. She also has worked with campus ministry to assist with Midnight Run, which brings food to homeless people in New York City. Cimino s potential as an administrator was recognized in 2011, when she was selected to participate in the Women and Minorities Mentor Program conducted by the NCAA and Division II Athletic Directors Association. My role as an administrator has allowed me to be involved in many aspects of campus life beyond coaching basketball, Cimino said. In my time at Caldwell, I have experienced so many things, from attending conference and NCAA Tournaments with our other teams, to working with students on campus, to traveling to France with our men s basketball team. I m appreciative of the opportunity to be a part of an athletic department like Caldwell s and I thank Mark Corino and the College administration. A native of Lincoln, R.I., Cimino was all-state in both basketball and softball at North Smithfield High School.
