1 2009 PRESBYTERIAN COLLEGE FOOTBALL GAME NOTES The Series Presbyterian College and Old Dominion will be meeting for the first time this Saturday. The game in Virginia is the second furthest distance PC has traveled for a Division I game this year. 105 Ashland Avenue Clinton, SC ) Fax: (864) bchager@presby.edu Brent C. Hager, Director of Sports Information/Game Operations Football Contact AJ Henderson, Assistant Director Thad Palmer, Sports Information Assistant Megan Trimpe, Sports Information Assistant Presbyterian College BLUE HOSE 0-5, 0-1 BIG SOUTH Old Dominion Mo n a r c h s 3-2, Independent 2009 Presbyterian College Football 1 Saturday, Oct. 10, 2009 Kickoff: 6:00 p.m. Foreman Field (19,782) Norfolk, Va. Series vs. ODU: First meeting Last Game: N/A The game is the last non-conference game of the season for the Blue Hose. PC is currently winless against nonconference opposition. All four games the Blue Hose have played in non-conference games have been against the Southern Conference. The Blue Hose are arguably one of the youngest teams in the nation. PC s youth will be up against a stiff test against the first-year program, who will join the CAA in Interesting Facts Rookie Patrick Morgano established a Division I school record with his 438 punting yards in the home opener against No. 10 Elon. It also marked the fourth-most punting yards all-time for a single game in the Big South Conference. First Time For Everything Head coach Harold Nichols could help his team to a number of firsts this week. Should the Blue Hose win, it will mark the first victory of the season for PC. The win would also mark the first win under head coach Harold Nichols. The Blue Hose will take on the ODU program this week, but the Monarchs already sport a 3-2 record. ODU sports 15 upperclassmen on the roster, including multiple junior college transfers. The two programs could very well be the youngest two teams in terms of average age in the country (FCS). The Monarchs voted to reinstate football in 2005 and have spent that time preparing for this season. PC began Division I play in The Checklist 3 This will be the fourth road game of the season for PC. Two prior road dates have come against Southern Conference foes while the other was against BSC competitor Stony Brook. 3 This marks the first time that the Blue Hose have squared off against Old Dominion, which started the school s football program this year. 3 PC is looking for its first win under head coach Harold Nichols. 3 The Blue Hose are playing in their second farthest road game of the season (the farthest was last week at Stony Brook). Trandon Dendy has stepped up big lately and is now among the top 10 players in the Big South for total points, having accounted for 24 points on four touchdowns. Since moving to Division I in 2007, PC sports a 3-15 away record. Trandon Dendy scored his first career Division I touchdown in the Chattanooga game. It also marked the first rushing touchdown of the year for PC. Senior Tim Webb was in for the last drive at The Citadel and promptly took the team 35 yards in five plays in just 1:57 for the squad s final touchdown of the evening. The touchdown strike went to Tyler Robbins over the middle for a 22-yard reception. Countdown To Kickoff 10 Wins the Blue Hose compiled in the team s first two years of Division I play. PC won six in 2007 and four a year ago. 9 Student-athletes that recorded at least one reception in the season-opening loss at Furman. 8 Assisted tackles by senior Brian Leonardi in the Chattanooga game, accounting for two-thirds of his 12 total tackles. 7 Turnovers for PC in the loss at Stony Brook, marking the most in one game since moving to Division I. 6 Unassisted tackles by both Justin Bethel and Stephon Thomas in the home opener against No. 10 Elon. 5 Red zone touchdowns for the Blue Hose on the year. The team had converted just one opportunity through its first two games. 4 Punts by Patrick Morgano in the loss at Stony Brook for a 38.2 yard average, marking his season average. 3 Touchdown passes by senior Tim Webb on the season and by Brandon Miley. 2 Touchdowns by Trandon Dendy in the loss at Stony Brook. Dendy had one rushing and one receiving touchdown. 1 Tackle for loss and one blocked kick by sophomore Justin Bethel at Stony Brook, in the first meeting between the institutions.
2 Presbyterian College Football Tyler s Two -Step Junior Tyler Robbins is having himself a remarkable season on special teams. Robbins leads the Big South in kick returns with 20. He is also the league-leader in kick return yards with 414. Robbins speed has helped him to the third spot in the conference in kick return average, netting 20.7 yards a return (just 0.1 yards out of second). Robbins long return of the season is 51 yards, which is the secondbest return in the Big South this season. The big return came at Stony Brook last week, when Robbins returned five kicks for 125 yards. More On PC s Powerful Special Teams Tyler Robbins is not the only Presbyterian College student-athlete that is fairing well on special teams this season. Rookie Patrick Morgano is tied for the league lead with a 38.2 punting average. Unfortunately, he also leads the Big South in punts (27) and yards punted (1,031). Morgano is one of five punters to have at least one punt of 50 yards. Fellow first-year player Aaron Mayes has played in five games and is one of just three kickers that has not missed an extra point on the year. Gardner-Webb s Ryan Gates is while Justin Durham of Coastal Carolina is a perfect 7-7, just like Mayes (with a minimum of one per game). Dendy Shows His Versatility Trandon Dendy showed his versatility at Stony Brook on Oct. 2. Dendy came out of the backfield to rush the ball 10 times for 59 yards for a 5.9 average. Dendy also hauled in three passes for 20 yards. Dendy s solid moves helped him reach the end-zone on the ground and through the air. He now leads the team with four touchdowns on the year, three of which have come on the ground. Sophomore Sensations Sophomore defensive players Derren Evans and Brian Davis seem to have a few things in common. One of those things is getting to the quarterback. Evans and Davis have each posted two sacks on the season. Evans has two sacks for 17 yards while Davis two solo sacks have gone for 12 yards. Bethel s Big Day Justin Bethel s big day at Stony Brook propelled him into the top-10 in the conference for tackles. Against the Seawolves Bethel recorded 11 tackles, nine of which were solo stops. For the year, he is averaging 6.4 tackles per contest (32 overall). He is 10th in the league and is second in the conference for solo tackles, just three behind Stony Brook s Tyler Santucci. Bethel is third in the conference among defensive backs in tackles. Leonardi s Seeks The Loss Senior defensive end Brian Leonardi is third in the Big South for tackles for loss. He has posted five total tackles for loss, three of which have been solo. Combined with his four assisted tackles for loss, Leonardi has helped back up the opposition 19 yards for the season. For good measure, Leonardi is tied for fifth in the conference among ends/lineman in total tackles. Bo Knows Opposing Teams Junior Bo Tribble knows how to get to opposing teams. Tribble is sixth in the Big South Conference among defensive backs in total tackles. He has racked up 28 tackles (16 of which have been solo tackles) for a 5.6 average on the year. He and Justin Bethel give the Blue Hose a powerful tandem as both rank in the top-10 in the league for tackles at their position. In fact, four members of the PC squad rank in the top 20 for tackles as a defensive back (JR Thomason is 15th and Torrell Funderburk is 19th). Stephen s Making A Splash Rookie Stephen Thomas is making a name for himself this season. Thomas is 10th in the league among linebackers for tackles in a game. Thomas is averaging six tackles per contest and is the only freshman in the top 15 in the category. Career Day For Dendy Head coach Harold Nichols was known for his solid rushing attack during his offensive coordinator days. Trandon Dendy and the rest of the Blue Hose backfield have taken a liking to it. Dendy piled on a career-high 147 yards on just 23 carries at The Citadel for a 6.4 yards per carry average. Dendy also scored his second rushing touchdown in as many games, galloping off the right side of the line for a 40-yard score on an option play on fourth-and-two. More On Dendy Trandon Dendy stands atop the Big South Conference in three rushing categories - total rushing, rush attempts and rush yards. He is second in the leauge in rushing touchdowns with two. He stands just one behind Liberty s Mike Brown, who has notched three in four games. This weekend, he will be going head-to-head against Stony Brook s Edwin Gowins, who is in the top-10 of four rushing categories and is tied with Dendy for rushing touchdowns. Becoming A Common Occurrence On Saturday evening, redshirt-sophomore quarterback Brandon Miley scored on a one-yard run to knot the score at 7 apiece in the first quarter. The touchdown was the sixth career touchdown, which is the most rushing scores for any current PC student-athlete. Touchdown Tim! Redshirt-senior Tim Webb played two possessions at The Citadel, but only one true possession. Webb hit Tyler Robbins for a 22-yard touchdown pass, which was Webb s third scoring strike on the season. Webb is just one touchdown toss behind Stony Brook s Michael Cutler, who leads the Big South with four touchdown passes. Wh e r e Th e y Sta n d In Th e Big So u t h Ra n k i n g s Defensively, multiple student-athletes have stepped up this season. Derren Evans is fifth in the league with two solo sacks while Justin Bethel is tied for ninth with one. Brian Leonardi is fourth for tackles for loss with 4.5. Rookie Daryl Ash is sixth in fumbles forced. Breaking it down by position, Leonardi is third in the conference with 19 total tackles for ends/lineman and Evans is tied for seventh while Bo Tribble is fifth among defensive backs. Freshman Stephen Thomas is the only freshman in the top 15 for tackles among linebackers and Michael Ruff is third for players at other positions. Dendy Feeling Dandy It had been a long time since Trandon Dendy reached the end-zone. Until the second quarter of the Chattanooga game, Dendy had not crossed the goal line since the 2006 campaign. That season, he was at Mars Hill College. The touchdown also marked the first in Dendy s Division I career. In his college days, Dendy has combined for four touchdowns and 697 yards on 174 attempts. After the games on Sept. 26, Dendy leads the league in rushes and also first in the conference in rushing yards.

The Blue Hose drop to 0-5 on the season and 0-1 in Big South Conference play. Stony Brook improves to 2-3 overall and 1-0 against conference competition. Leading the way for PC on the ground was Trandon Dendy, who scored both touchdowns on the day. He rushed 11 times for 61 yards and one touchdown. Dendy also caught three passes for 20 yards and the touchdown. Brandon Miley connected on 17-of-23 passes for 146 yards and a touchdown. Sean Adegbola hauled in six passes for 73 yards while Patrick McKoy caught five balls for 40 yards. Stony Brook s Conte Cuttino drove in for the game s first score from five yards out. With the extra point, the Seawolves went up 7-0. Dendy then helped the Blue Hose take the ball 91 yards on seven plays, taking 3:19 off the clock. He then scampered four yards into the end-zone with just 2:54 to play in the first quarter. Aaron Mayes extra point tied the game at 7-7. The Seawolves tacked on two scores to start the second quarter to jump out to a 20-7 lead. Edwin Gowins rushed 44 yards for a touchdown and the Donald Porter caught a touchdown pass from Michael Coulter for the 20-7 lead. The PC defense then blocked the extra point, giving the team some momentum. After PC got the ball back, Brandon Miley guided the team to the end-zone. With just four plays, the Blue Hose covered 63 yards. Miley hit Dendy out of the backfield, who made a couple of beautiful moves before ending up with his second touchdown on the day. The Blue Hose had just 240 total yards on the day. PC had seven turnovers, four of which were fumbles. 6 Presbyterian College Football Harold Nichols On January 14, 2009, Presbyterian College Athletics Director Dr. William Carlton announced the hiring of Harold Nichols as the head football coach. Nichols, a 1989 alumnus of PC, comes back to the Blue Hose family from Bucknell University, where he was the offensive coordinator and assistant coach since January The Bison racked up 24.6 points per contest in Nichols lone season with the squad. He helped guide the offense to a season-high 48 points in the season-opening victory over Duquesne, In addition to his offensive coordinator duties, Nichols also coached the quarterbacks and running backs. Nichols coached all-conference selection Shawn Pasternak, who totaled a school-record 72 catches for 1,083 yards and 12 touchdowns. His quarterbacks combined to pass for (61 percent) and 2,063 yards for 20 touchdowns against just seven interceptions. Under Nichols, the offense amassed its highest points per game average since 2004, tallying 269 points for the season. The team was just three points shy of eighth place on the program s all-time list. Nichols spread option attack resulted in Bucknell throwing for more than 2,000 yards for the first time since In the vaunted running attack, six different student-athletes registered at least 100 yards on the ground, totalling more than 1,600 rushing yards for the season. Prior to joining Bucknell, Nichols was the associate head coach and offensive coordinator at Rhode Island beginning in April He also coached the quarterbacks and running backs. Nichols led the Rams to a threewin turnaround during his first year with the program. At Rhode Island, Nichols called all of the offensive plays and worked daily with the Rams quarterbacks and running backs. He played a major role in turning the Rhode Island offense into one of the top ground attacks in the FCS. The Rams broke the school rushing record in each of his first four seasons in Kingston, including a 4,005-yard ground attack in 2003 that ranked No. 2 in the nation and shattered both Rhode Island and Atlantic 10 records. In 2005, Rhode Island ranked third in the nation in rushing and led the Atlantic 10 with yards per game along with 31 touchdowns. It was also the second-highest rushing total in school history. For all his hard work, Nichols was promoted to the associate head coach prior to his sixth season as the Rams offensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach and running backs coach. In December 2006, Nichols was recognized as the Michael Campbell Top Assistant Coach Award by the All-America Football Foundation at a banquet held in Newton, Mass. In 2000, the Rams rang up a then-school record 2,244 yards on the ground. In 2001, the squad piled up 2,565 yards for a average, which was the third highest in the Atlantic 10 and a new school record. The Rams topped that total by amassing 2,904 yards in After graduating from Presbyterian College in 1989 with a degree in political science and a minor in physical education, Nichols began his coaching career on the Blue Hose sideline in As an assistant coach, he worked with the quarterbacks and running backs while serving dual roles as he was also the director of campus life for the team members. In July 1992, Nichols started his coaching tenure with Georgia Southern as the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. There, he worked with a variety of student-athletes including wide receivers, running backs, defensive ends, kickers and specialists. His responsibilities included assignment of coaches, being in charge of all visits (official and unofficial), evaluations and all NCAA compliance matters. He helped guide the team to the 1993 Southern Conference title and two Division I-AA playoff berths (1993, 1995). In each of those years, the team won its first-round game before falling to the eventual national champion (Youngstown State and Montana) and finished In five years, Nichols helped the Eagles to a mark. Nichols returned to PC in December of 1996 in the same role his had at Georgia Southern. In his return to PC, Nichols coached the wide receivers, kickers and specialists. He helped head coach Daryl Dickey take the Blue Hose from 5-6 in 1997 to 8-3 and 7-4 the next two seasons before taking the job at Rhode Island. A standout recruiter, Nichols has recruited in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut, North Carolina and South Carolina. He and his wife, Dee, have an older daughter, Cassie, and twins, Corey and Cameron. If you have ever seen the movie Braveheart, you have seen a true Blue Hose. Despite this depiction, it still has been asked many times where Presbyterian College received its Blue Hose nickname. Several rumors exist and Ray Frank in his book, What s In A Nickname delved into the subject. Frank discovered that there were many opinions. One story had it that the Presbyterian Scotch-Irish wore blue stockings in the Puritan beginnings of our country. Another said that a fierce war-like band of Scotch-Irish named the Hose painted their entire bodies blue before going into battle. Yet, probably the true story lies in a letter dated June 15, 1935, written by then PC athletic director Walter Johnson to an inquiring English professor in Virginia... (quoting from Walter Johnson s letter) It was about the second or third year, 1915, if I remember right. I think it happened this way: I changed uniform colors to blue, wearing blue stockings and jerseys, and some sports writer started calling in his articles the Presbyterian College teams the Blue Stockings.... in later years Stocking became abbreviated to the Hose, particularly in newspaper headlines, and was more or less officially adopted by the student body in the 1950 s. All the PC media guides since 1996 continued to elaborate on the issue, quoting an article by Ben Hay Hammet entitled The Spirt of PC. The piece by Hammet articulated that, Johnson always insisted on the fact that his players wear long blue socks similar to stockings (after all, there were White Sox and Red Sox in baseball). Coach Johnson s explanation may simply be coincidental to the fact that the phrase Blue Stocking Presbyterian goes back informally quite a few years in the denomination s history. Nevertheless, PC s athletic nickname was shortened to Blue Hose in 1954.
