The Blue Hose won the first five meetings in the series, which began in GWU has won the last three. This will mark the second time that the Blue Hose have made the trek to Boiling Springs, N.C. since making the move to Division I. Last time PC played at GWU, the Blue Hose fell Last year, PC fought hard, but came up just short in the loss in the season finale. Just For Kicks In the all-time series, each team has been shut out just once. PC fell 17-0 in 1977 while the Blue Hose held the Runnin Bulldogs scoreless in 1986, winning Seven of the games have been decided by three points or less. The Blue Hose are 2-5 in those contests. A year ago, PC nearly ended its losing skid, falling just shy of the Runnin Bulldogs on Nov. 21 in the home loss. In that game, Brandon Miley tossed for 247 yards, hitting 19 passes with a touchdown. Sophomore Lance Byrd led the way with 60 yards rushing and a score. Patrick McKoy hauled in a touchdown pass. On the defensive front, Brian Leonardi had a game-high 10 stops. He was also in on a sack. Justin Bethel chipped in eight tackles while Brian Wilson accounted for seven solo stops. 105 Ashland Avenue Clinton, SC ) Fax: (864) bchager@presby.edu Brent C. P Head coach Harold Nichols is familiar with Gardner-Webb, having played against the team when he was an athlete at PC. Nichols lone victory over GWU during his undergraduate days came in 1986, a 26-0 victory. It is also the only time PC has shut out GWU in the 32-game series. P Head coach Harold Nichols will be looking for his second career win over the Runnin Bulldogs, but the first as a head coach. 10 Wins the Blue Hose compiled in the team s first three-plus years of Division I play. PC won six in 2007 and four in Number of completions by Myron Gary in his first collegiate start. Gary accounted for 77 passing yards and 34 rushing yards, including PC s lone touchdown. 8 Tackles by junior Justin Bethel in his return against Coastal Carolina. Bethel had missed the previous 1.5 games after sustaining an injury against North Greenville. 7 Solo tackles by Justin Bethel against the Chanticleers. 6 Receptions by Tyler Robbins in the home lost against Coastal Carolina. It marked a career high for Robbins. His 87 receiving yards were also a career high. 5 Patrick Morgano tied the fifth-longest punt in Big South Conference history with his 64- yard kick at VMI. That also established a PC Division I record and flipped the field. PC was at its own 20. After Morgano s kick and a penalty on the play, VMI was at its 8-yard line. 4 Receiving touchdowns that PC has so far through the 2010 campaign. Michael Ruff has three of those while Anderico Bailey has the other. 3 Forced fumbles by the Presbyterian College defense at The Citadel. 2 Players that saw their first career playing time against Coastal Carolina. Freshmen Ryan Singer and Arthur (pronounced Ar-tour) Williams came in against the Chanticleers. Singer went with 133 yards passing while Williams had a catch for eight yards. 1 Play that PC had against Wake Forest that earned the top spot on SportsCenter.

2 All-Time vs. Coastal Carolina The Presbyterian College football team will square off against Gardner- Webb Saturday. The winner of the contest will take the all-time lead in the series. The squads have played 32 times since 1970, with each winning 16. The Runnin Bulldogs have won the last three in the series, including the last one while PC was Division II and the first two since making the move to Division I. PC GWU YEAR Ready To Join The List Heading into the Gardner-Webb game, two Presbyterian College players have a chance to move onto the Big South Conference s career 1,000-yard rush list. There are currently 30 players on the list. Liberty s Mike Brown is just 19 yards shy, but the Flames are off until they make the trek to PC Oct. 30. Redshirt-senior Trandon Dendy currently has 921 career rush yards at PC. Lance Byrd has 875 in his oneplus years in a Blue Hose uniform. Right now, there stands a chance that four players in the league could join the list by the end of the month as CSU s Gerald Stevenson is also close to the mark. Redshirts No More Against Coastal Carolina, the Presbyterian College football staff decided to take the redshirts off two student-athletes. It marked the first time that quarterback Ryan Singer and receiver Arthur (pronounced Ar-tour) Williams saw time on the field since their arrival on campus. Myron Makes His Debut Redshirt-senior Myron Gary made his first collegiate start against the Chanticleers Oct. 16. Gary helped move the offense down the field while he was in, but the offense was able to score just seven points. Gary, however, completed nine passes for 77 yards. He was also second on the team with 34 rush yards. He did account for PC s lone score, via his legs. Here s To You, Mr. Robbins Senior Tyler Robbins recorded the biggest game of his collegiate career against Coastal Carolina. Robbins hauled in six passes for 87 yards, both of which were career highs. In fact, in 2008 Robbins collected just five catches for 45 yards for the season. That year, his longest reception was 14 yards. Last year, he had eight receptions for the season, with three being the most he had in a game at Liberty. He had a season-best 40 yards at The Citadel, including a then career-long 22-yard reception. In addition to catching a career-high six passes for a career-high 87 yards, one of Robbins receptions was also a career best. Against the Chanticleers, he pulled in a 36-yard pass. Welcome Back! The Coastal Carolina game marked the first time since leaving midway through the North Greenville game that Justin Bethel was able to be back on the field. Bethel accounted for a game-high eight tackles including a team-best seven solo stops. Bethel also accounted for a quarterback hurry on the day. Ryan s Debut True freshman Ryan Singer made his collegiate debut at the quarterback position for Presbyterian College against Coastal Carolina. Singer completed passes for 133 yards, including a career-long 36 to Tyler Robbins (for his career-long reception). Singer made some good throws and also kept a couple of drives alive with his feet. He rushed for 27 yards on seven carries, but was also sacked three times, leaving him with a net of four yards. Counting On Cole Jeremy Cole, who has been pretty versatile in his career, has been pretty consistent this year. He has hauled in 20 receptions for 220 yards and a touchdown. He is averaging 11 yards a reception and has recorded a season-long 25-yard reception three different times. After not catching a pass at VMI, Cole came back to nab four passes for 49 yards, which is the second-most yards he has hauled in for a game this season. The most was his six-reception 76-yard performance in the season-opening game against Wake Forest. Patrick The Punter Sophomore Patrick Morgano recorded five punts for 200 yards against Coastal Carolina. Morgano put two inside the 20 yard line, including pinning one inside the 10. Coming off a career-long 64-yard punt against VMI, he tallied another that was over 50 yards. Morgano had a long of 53 yards against the Chanticleers. Morgano leads the Big South with a 42.8 yard per kick average. One-Two Punch On Saturday, the top two pass defenses in the Big South Conference will clash in Boiling Springs, N.C. The former South Atlantic Conference rivals, Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian College, currently sport the top two pass defenses in the league. The Runnin Bulldogs are holding opponents to yards per game while the Blue Hose are allowing just yards per contest.

3 Sound In The Kicking Game To win the special teams battle and games, it is well known that teams must be sound in the kicking game. Although PC has attempted just three field goals on the year, senior Cam Miller has connected on all three, including two against VMI. PC is the only team in the Big South to have made every field goal attempt. The Runnin Bulldogs have attempted four, the next fewest in the BSC, and have hit just one. More Similarities Between The Programs PC leads the Big South Conference in net yards per punt and average yards per punt in addition to yards punted. Sophomore Patrick Morgano is having a spectacular season, averaging 51.6 yards per kick. The net yardage is 35.8 yards per punt. GWU is third in the league in average yards per punt with 38.8 yards. The Runnin Bulldogs have punted more times than anyone else (42), but PC is just one punt shy (41) of the leaders. The Blue Hose have 1704 punt yards while GWU is second with Did You Know? As of Oct. 17, the Presbyterian College football team is the only institution in the Big South Conference to have returned an interception for a touchdown. Antarius Terrell s 15-yard scamper stands as the only time this season a defensive player has scored via an interception. Terrell s Touchdown At VMI, sophomore Antarius Terrell picked off a pass and rumbled 15 yards to pay-dirt, marking the first interception return for a touchdown during the Harold Nichols era. The touchdown also pulled PC within three, What Can Brown Do For You? Derek Brown had arguably his best day in a Blue Hose uniform at VMI. Brown recorded a career and gamehigh 13 tackles in the hard-fought loss. Seven of those tackles were of the solo variety. He assisted on six others, including one that went for a tackle for loss. Patrick s Punts Sophomore Patrick Morgano has come into his own during his second season. Morgano, who had a careerbest 57-yard punt at The Citadel, bested that at VMI. Morgano flipped the field for PC with his career-long 64-yard punt. The punt not only helped the defense out, but it tied the Big South Conference s fifth-best mark all time. Morgano had one punt inside the 20 yard line and nearly had two more land on the one yard line. However, each of those barely crossed the goal line for touchbacks. For the day, he averaged 57.8 yards per punt. He earned Big South Conference Special Teams Player of the Week for his effort. Young Guys Stepping Up With the Presbyterian College secondary suffering some injuries heading into the VMI game, the Blue Hose freshmen took on an even larger role than they have the rest of the 2010 season. Rookie LJ Perry notched his first double-digit tackle game. He had a career high and tied for game-high honors with seven solo tackles. He was in on three tackles for loss and accounted for 10 total stops. Freshman Jimmy Pruitt posted a career-best nine stops (three solo) and had two highlight-reel pass break-ups en route to earning Big South Conference Freshman of the Week honors. Matthan Burton totaled a career-best eight total stops, six of which were of the solo variety. Be Like Mike In similar fashion to the old I want to be like Mike commercials, PC fans might bring that motto back when talking about redshirt-sophomore Michael Ruff. The Whitmire, S.C., native hauled in a touchdown pass at Wake Forest, which landed him as part of the top play on SportsCenter. Ruff not only hauls in passes, returns kicks and runs the ball, but at VMI, Ruff completed a pass for a 44-yard gain. The throw back to quarterback Myron Gary set up Cam Miller s 23- yard field goal, helping the Blue Hose pull within four, Leonardi Does It Again In 2009, Brian Leonardi recovered a fumble against VMI and returned it for an apparent touchdown, but a penalty relegated the return to 48 yards. Against the Keydets in 2010, Leonardi tried to scoop up another fumble, but managed to fall on it after not being successful with his first attempt. Patrick Puts It In Junior Patrick McKoy, coming off a spectacular 2009 campaign, recorded his first touchdown catch of the year against North Greenville. McKoy hauled in a team-best five catches for 58 yards. His touchdown came with 5:38 to play in the opening quarter. The 12-yard reception helped PC knot the score at 7-7. Cam Connects From Way Downtown Senior Cam Miller connected on a second-quarter field goal for head coach Harold Nichols team. The 26-yard field goal with just over five minutes to play in the half pulled PC within four, It also marked the first time that the Blue Hose had attempted a field goal this season. 6 Harold Nichols Head Coach Second Year On January 14, 2009, Presbyterian College Athletics Director Dr. William Carlton announced the hiring of Harold Nichols as the head football coach. Nichols, a 1989 alumnus of PC, came back to the Blue Hose family from Bucknell, where he was the offensive coordinator and assistant coach since January In his first season, Nichols guided PC through its most difficult Division I schedule. Three of his student-athletes earned allconference honors. Defensive standout Justin Bethel, in addition to wide receiver Patrick McKoy and long snapper Matt Quinn earned second-team accolades. Under Nichols watch, newcomers Lance Byrd and Patrick Morgano accounted for four Big South Conference Freshman of the Week honors. One such award for Byrd came on the heels of his school-record 274 rushing yards in his first career start. In 2008, the Bison racked up 24.6 points per contest in Nichols lone season with the squad. He helped guide the offense to a season-high 48 points in the season-opening victory over Duquesne, In addition to his offensive coordinator duties, Nichols also coached the quarterbacks and running backs. Nichols coached all-conference selection Shawn Pasternak, who totaled a school-record 72 catches for 1,083 yards and 12 touchdowns. His quarterbacks combined to pass for (61 percent) and 2,063 yards for 20 touchdowns against just seven interceptions. Under Nichols, the offense amassed its highest points per game average since 2004, tallying 269 points for the season. The team was just three points shy of eighth place on the program s all-time list. Nichols spread option attack resulted in Bucknell throwing for more than 2,000 yards for the first time since In the vaunted running attack, six different student-athletes registered at least 100 yards on the ground, totalling more than 1,600 rushing yards for the season. Prior to joining Bucknell, Nichols was the associate head coach and offensive coordinator at Rhode Island beginning in April He also coached the quarterbacks and running backs. Nichols led the Rams to a three-win turnaround during his first year with the program. At Rhode Island, Nichols called all of the offensive plays and worked daily with the Rams quarterbacks and running backs. He played a major role in turning the Rhode Island offense into one of the top ground attacks in the FCS. The Rams broke the school rushing record in each of his first four seasons in Kingston, including a 4,005-yard ground attack in 2003 that ranked No. 2 in the nation and shattered both Rhode Island and Atlantic 10 records. In 2005, Rhode Island ranked third in the nation in rushing and led the Atlantic 10 with yards per game along with 31 touchdowns. It was also the second-highest rushing total in school history. For all his hard work, Nichols was promoted to the associate head coach prior to his sixth season as the Rams offensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach and running backs coach. In December 2006, Nichols was recognized as the Michael Campbell Top Assistant Coach Award by the All-America Football Foundation at a banquet held in Newton, Mass. In 2000, the Rams rang up a then-school record 2,244 yards on the ground. In 2001, the squad piled up 2,565 yards for a average, which was the third highest in the Atlantic 10 and a new school record. The Rams topped that total by amassing 2,904 yards in After graduating from Presbyterian College in 1989 with a degree in political science and a minor in physical education, Nichols began his coaching career on the Blue Hose sideline in As an assistant coach, he worked with the quarterbacks and running backs while serving dual roles as he was also the director of campus life for the team members. In July 1992, Nichols started his coaching tenure with Georgia Southern as the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. There, he worked with a variety of student-athletes including wide receivers, running backs, defensive ends, kickers and specialists. His responsibilities included assignment of coaches, being in charge of all visits (official and unofficial), evaluations and all NCAA compliance matters. He helped guide the team to the 1993 Southern Conference title and two Division I-AA playoff berths (1993, 1995). In each of those years, the team won its first-round game before falling to the eventual national champion (Youngstown State and Montana) and finished In five years, Nichols helped the Eagles to a mark. Nichols returned to PC in December of 1996 in the same role his had at Georgia Southern. In his return to PC, Nichols coached the wide receivers, kickers and specialists. He helped head coach Daryl Dickey take the Blue Hose from 5-6 in 1997 to 8-3 and 7-4 the next two seasons before taking the job at Rhode Island. A standout recruiter, Nichols has recruited in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut, North Carolina and South Carolina. He and his wife, Dee, have an older daughter, Cassie, and twins, Corey and Cameron. WHAT IS A BLUE HOSE? A Blue Hose is a fierce Scotch-Irish warrior. If you have ever seen the movie Braveheart, you have seen a true Blue Hose. Despite this depiction, it still has been asked many times where Presbyterian College received its Blue Hose nickname. Several rumors exist and Ray Frank in his book, What s In A Nickname delved into the subject. Frank discovered that there were many opinions. One story had it that the Presbyterian Scotch-Irish wore blue stockings in the Puritan beginnings of our country. Another said that a fierce war-like band of Scotch-Irish named the Hose painted their entire bodies blue before going into battle. Yet, probably the true story lies in a letter dated June 15, 1935, written by then PC athletic director Walter Johnson to an inquiring English professor in Virginia... (quoting from Walter Johnson s letter) It was about the second or third year, 1915, if I remember right. I think it happened this way: I changed uniform colors to blue, wearing blue stockings and jerseys, and some sports writer started calling in his articles the Presbyterian College teams the Blue Stockings.... in later years Stocking became abbreviated to the Hose, particularly in newspaper headlines, and was more or less officially adopted by the student body in the 1950 s. All the PC media guides since 1996 continued to elaborate on the issue, quoting an article by Ben Hay Hammet entitled The Spirt of PC. The piece by Hammet articulated that, Johnson always insisted on the fact that his players wear long blue socks similar to stockings (after all, there were White Sox and Red Sox in baseball). Coach Johnson s explanation may simply be coincidental to the fact that the phrase Blue Stocking Presbyterian goes back informally quite a few years in the denomination s history. 11 BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The League s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the Conference s mission of Developing Leaders Through Athletics. The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status. During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women s basketball and women s golf. In 1989, George F. Buddy Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990, the League received its first automatic bid receiving an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser s seven years of leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing among some of the finest teams in the nation. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the League s third Commissioner, and in his 13 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to new levels. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during the past several years, he has brought television coverage to Big South women s basketball, baseball and softball for the first time in Conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages. Under Kallander s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the League s vision as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and has solidified Conference membership with the additions of High Point, Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian, and in , the return of charter member Campbell University. Kallander s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its first live event video streaming in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 600 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms. In the last 15 years alone, the Big South Conference has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time, the Conference has had two individual National Champions, more than 200 All- Americans, has reached the Sweet 16 in men s soccer, women s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in men s soccer, men s basketball, women s basketball, baseball, men s outdoor track & field, and men s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship four times in addition to the first men s tennis doubles at-large selection, had the No. 1 ranked men s golfer in the country, has had the nation s top scoring men s basketball team three consecutive years as well as the national men s basketball scoring leader twice, received an at-large playoff berth in the Football Championship Subdivision in 2006, and had an institution finish fifth in the NCAA Men s Golf Championships the Conference s highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event. In alone, the Big South was the only Conference nationwide to have an at-large participant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina), a team in the Second Round of the NCAA Men s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed three out of the last five years, while its FCS playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fifth-year of the Big South s football existence. The Conference s tagline, Developing Leaders Through Athletics was unveiled in in conjunction with the Conference s 25th Anniversary. The League also honored its heritage with the Top 25 Best of the Best moments in League history from , with Liberty University s 10-year women s basketball championship run from being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South s first 25 years. The Conference s on-field accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. Annually, more than 40 percent of Conference student-athletes are named to the Big South s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average, and the League has had more than 95 Academic All-Americans in its quarter-century of existence.
