1 2010 PRESBYTERIAN COLLEGE FOOTBALL GAME NOTES The Series Presbyterian College and Liberty will be meeting for the eighth time Saturday. PC leads the all-time series 4-3. After losing the first game in the series, PC won the next three. Since moving to Division I, PC is 1-2 against the Flames, but PC defeated Liberty in 2008 when the Flames visited Clinton, S.C. as the No. 17 team in the country. This will mark the second time that the Blue Hose have hosted Liberty since making the move to Division I. Last time PC hosted LU, the Blue Hose won Last year, the Flames came away with a victory in Lynchburg, Va. Just For Kicks In the all-time series, PC defeated Liberty in the only shutout of the seven games. The Blue Hose won the game 3-0 in In the two other games decided by less than 10 points, PC came away victorious in each. The first was a victory in 1984 and then a win in Two years ago, PC s win over Liberty essentially knocked the Flames out of a chance to play in the postseason. That game, in similar fashion to PC s win over Gardner-Webb, had Cam Miller connecting on a field goal to secure the victory. In that game, Brandon Miley tossed for 301 yards and two touchdown scores, one of which was taken in by now junior Patrick McKoy. Miller connected on all four extra point tries in addition to his game-winning field goal that came with 7:04 to play in the contest. 105 Ashland Avenue Clinton, SC ) Fax: (864) bchager@presby.edu Brent C. More On The Series Presbyterian College lost the first game of the series that came in The next three years, the Blue Hose defeated the Flames. The1985 game was the last the squads played until 2007, which Liberty won PC is looking for its first home victory since Nov. 1, a win over Big South foe Liberty. The Liberty game is the second of the season for the Blue Hose against a team from the Commonwealth State. PC lost at VMI on Oct. 2. Saturday, Oct. 30, 2010 Kickoff: 1:30 p.m. Clinton, S.C. Broadcast: GoBlueHose.com Radio Frequency: 94.1 FM Video Streaming: BigSouthSports.com Series vs. LU: PC leads 4-3 Series Streak: LU 1 The Checklist Countdown To Kickoff P With the win over Gardner-Webb, head coach Harold Nichols vaulted into a three-way tie for 13th place on PC s all-time win list. In 1918, Gifford Shaw went 1-1 as a head coach. Then, in 1962, Clyde Erhardt was 1-9 in his only stint at the helm of the Blue Hose program. P The last time PC won a road game and followed it up with a home contest was Sept. 29, 2007 and Oct. 6, PC traveled to North Carolina Central and won a decision. The following week, the Blue Hose defeated North Greenville in front of their home faithful. In fact, the NCCU win started a four-game winning streak. 10 Tackles for loss the defense had in the victory over the Runnin Bulldogs. 9 Number of sacks that PC tallied against Gardner-Webb, marking a Division I school record. 8 Tackles by junior Justin Bethel in his return against Coastal Carolina. Bethel had missed the previous 1.5 games after sustaining an injury against North Greenville. 7 Number of receivers that caught at least one pass in the victory over Gardner-Webb. Four players had two receptions while three had one. 6 Receptions by Tyler Robbins in the home lost against Coastal Carolina. It marked a career high for Robbins. His 87 receiving yards were also a career high. 5 Patrick Morgano tied the fifth-longest punt in Big South Conference history with his 64- yard kick at VMI. That also established a PC Division I record and flipped the field. PC was at its own 20. After Morgano s kick and a penalty on the play, VMI was at its 8-yard line. 4 Tackles for loss that Brian Davis had in the win over GWU. Three of those tackles for loss were sacks. 3 Rushing touchdowns by PC in the win over GWU. Myron Gary had two while Trandon Dendy had one. 2 Field goals made by Cam Miller in the victory over the Runnin Bulldogs, including the game-winning score with just over two minutes to play. 1 Win head coach Harold Nichols has after defeating Gardner-Webb on Oct. 23.

2 All-Time Series vs. Liberty The Presbyterian College football team sports an all-time record of 4-3 against Liberty. The teams first played in 1982 with the Flames winning the game After that, PC won the next three games in the series, coming from The teams did not meet again until 2007 when Liberty won. The last time Liberty traveled to Clinton, S.C., came in Cam Miller s field goal gave PC its first Division I win over a top-20 team. A year ago, the Blue Hose lost to Liberty in Lynchubrg, Va. PC LU YEAR The Game Ball Goes To Despite a solid performance by the defense, clutch kicking by the special teams, tremendous improvision by Seth Moreland and Myron Gary, the game ball was awarded to head coach Harold Nichols after the victory over Gardner-Webb on Oct. 23. The win marked the first in Nichols career. It Has Been A While At Gardner-Webb, the Blue Hose were ahead 10-7 at the intermission. It marked the first time since Oct. 11, 2008 that the Presbyterian College football team carried a lead at the break. On that day, the Blue Hose led over North Carolina Central at the halftime break. In similar fashion to the win over the Runnin Bulldogs, PC defeated NCCU Defense Establishes A PC Division I School Record The Presbyterian College defense played well at VMI, but the team arguably had its best statistical day in an opponent s backfield as it has had since making the move to Division I. Against the Runnin Bulldogs, the Blue Hose accounted for a PC Division I school record nine sacks. Leading the way was Brain Davis, who had three. LJ Perry, Joe Wideman, Xavier Boatwright, Jimmy Pruitt, Iouli Burroughs and Brian Leonardi all had one. PC s nine sacks resulted in a loss of 63 yards. CeeJay s Big Day Since his arrival in January, CeeJay Harris has been a steady force at the linebacker spot. In the win over GWU, Harris recorded his season high with 12 tackles. It not only marked his season best, but it was also a game high. Derek The Dominator During his senior season, Derek Brown has really come on strong. A consistent player, Brown has been more dominant this year alongside CeeJay Harris. Brown flew all over the field at Gardner-Webb, notching 10 tackles. He also had one quarterback hurry. For the season, he is currently fourth in the Big South Conference in tackles. Through seven games, Brown has amassed 55 stops on the season for a 7.9 tackles per game average. He has three double-digit tackle games, with a career high 13 at VMI. At GWU, he posted 10 stops for the day. The Meaning Behind 1 The number one has a lot of meaning for Presbyterian College. The victory over Gardner-Webb marked the first win for head coach Harold Nichols. It was also the first Big South win for

3 PC. The victory marked the first-ever Big South road win for the Blue Hose (PC won games at VMI and Coastal Carolina in 2008, but the win over Gardner-Webb was the first one as it counted in league standings). The victory was also the first win for PC over the Runnin Bulldogs since making the move to Division I. The number 1 also marks the number of games PC is ahead of GWU in the all-time series. The Blue Hose lead the series With Nichols first win, it put him in a three-way tie for 13th place on PC s all-time career win list. He is tied with Clyde Erhardt and Gifford Shaw. Cam Is Clutch On Nov. 1, 2008, PC s Cam Miller connected on what turned out to be the game-winning field goal in the win over top-20 Liberty. On Oct. 23, 2010, Miller helped PC end a FCShigh 20-game losing streak. With just over two minutes to play, Miller trotted onto the field and from the left hash mark, drilled a 31-yard field goal for a lead. For the season, Miller has connected on all five field goal attempts. Against NGU, he drilled a 26-yarder. At VMI, Miller connected from 42 and 23 yards. In the win over the Runnin Bulldogs, Miller split the uprights from 41 yards in the second quarter and the game-winning 31-yard field goal. Big Day For Brian Davis Junior defensive lineman Brian Davis had a magnificent showing at Gardner-Webb. Davis had a career game, posting eight tackles. Even more impressive was the fact that six of those stops were solo. For the day, he had four tackles for loss, including three sacks. He helped GWU lose 20 yards on the four tackles for loss. Due to his big day, Davis now ranks fifth in the conference in sacks for the season. On the last drive of the game, Davis huge sack of John Rock put GWU on a fourth and 19. Big South Honorees Junior Brian Davis and Senior Cam Miller earned Big South Conference honors on Monday, Oct. 25. Davis earned Defensive Player of the Week honors after recording eight tackles, including four for loss and three sacks. Miller garnered Special Teams Player of the Week after nailing two field goals and two extra points. Miller s field goal with just over two minutes remaining gave PC the win. Seal The Deal On fourth and 19 with just over a minute to play, Gardner-Webb was forced to throw the ball. With the defensive front getting after the quarterback, Justin Bethel was able to drop back into coverage and intercept the ball at the GWU 45. He returned it to the six-yard line before being tackled. The interception sealed head coach Harold Nichols first career win. Two team rushes later, the game was over with PC winning He s Got Legs And He Knows How To Use Them Dual threat quarterback Myron Gary connected on 10 pass attempts for 111 yards in the win over Gardner-Webb. The biggest thing, Gary used his legs on quarterback draws and scrambles when plays broke down. He totaled 12 rushes for 38 net yards. However, he scored on a 13-yard run in the first quarter on a quarterback draw. Gary then put PC ahead on a 12-yard scramble after a play broke down. Sharing Is Caring It is always important to keep players involved in the game. Against Gardner-Webb, Myron Gary and Ryan Singer made sure to involve seven players in the pass game. Although no receiver had more than two catches, seven recorded at least one catch, the seven combined for 123 yards and helped keep the defense honest and allowing the running game to flourish. M&M It s Not Just A Candy There might be a new usage for the term M&M. In addition to being candy that has been around for some time, the duo of Patrick Morgano and Cam Miller has been a formidable tandem this season. Out of the seven players in the Big South Conference to attempt a field goal, Cam Miller is the only player to have connected on all of his attempts. Miller is 5-5 on the year, including kicking the gamewinning field goal at Gardner-Webb which came from 31 yards out. Patrick Morgano has been consistent all year long. He leads the conference in yards per kick (42.3). Morgano also has a career long of 64, which is the tied for fifth longest in Big South history. Two Dates To Remember January 14 is a day in which numerous things happened in history. Some of those include: The Simpsons premiering, Martina Navatilova is the third to win 100 tennis tournaments, the Blue s Brothers movie opened, the Miami Dolphins completed an undefeated season, head coach Harold Nichols was hired by PC. On Oct. 23 in history, American colonial forces fail to seize Quebec, 25,000 women march in NYC demanding the right to vote, Dumbo was released by Disney, US President Richard Nixon agrees to turn over subpoenaed audio tapes of his Oval Office conversations about the Watergate Scandal, the first ipod is released, Harold Nichols earns his first career victory. 647; 15,528; 931,680 Since head coach Harold Nichols was hired January 14, 2009, he had to wait 647 days for his first win. 6 Harold Nichols Head Coach Second Year On January 14, 2009, Presbyterian College Athletics Director Dr. William Carlton announced the hiring of Harold Nichols as the head football coach. Nichols, a 1989 alumnus of PC, came back to the Blue Hose family from Bucknell, where he was the offensive coordinator and assistant coach since January In his first season, Nichols guided PC through its most difficult Division I schedule. Three of his student-athletes earned allconference honors. Defensive standout Justin Bethel, in addition to wide receiver Patrick McKoy and long snapper Matt Quinn earned second-team accolades. Under Nichols watch, newcomers Lance Byrd and Patrick Morgano accounted for four Big South Conference Freshman of the Week honors. One such award for Byrd came on the heels of his school-record 274 rushing yards in his first career start. In 2008, the Bison racked up 24.6 points per contest in Nichols lone season with the squad. He helped guide the offense to a season-high 48 points in the season-opening victory over Duquesne, In addition to his offensive coordinator duties, Nichols also coached the quarterbacks and running backs. Nichols coached all-conference selection Shawn Pasternak, who totaled a school-record 72 catches for 1,083 yards and 12 touchdowns. His quarterbacks combined to pass for (61 percent) and 2,063 yards for 20 touchdowns against just seven interceptions. Under Nichols, the offense amassed its highest points per game average since 2004, tallying 269 points for the season. The team was just three points shy of eighth place on the program s all-time list. Nichols spread option attack resulted in Bucknell throwing for more than 2,000 yards for the first time since In the vaunted running attack, six different student-athletes registered at least 100 yards on the ground, totalling more than 1,600 rushing yards for the season. Prior to joining Bucknell, Nichols was the associate head coach and offensive coordinator at Rhode Island beginning in April He also coached the quarterbacks and running backs. Nichols led the Rams to a three-win turnaround during his first year with the program. At Rhode Island, Nichols called all of the offensive plays and worked daily with the Rams quarterbacks and running backs. He played a major role in turning the Rhode Island offense into one of the top ground attacks in the FCS. The Rams broke the school rushing record in each of his first four seasons in Kingston, including a 4,005-yard ground attack in 2003 that ranked No. 2 in the nation and shattered both Rhode Island and Atlantic 10 records. In 2005, Rhode Island ranked third in the nation in rushing and led the Atlantic 10 with yards per game along with 31 touchdowns. It was also the second-highest rushing total in school history. For all his hard work, Nichols was promoted to the associate head coach prior to his sixth season as the Rams offensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach and running backs coach. In December 2006, Nichols was recognized as the Michael Campbell Top Assistant Coach Award by the All-America Football Foundation at a banquet held in Newton, Mass. In 2000, the Rams rang up a then-school record 2,244 yards on the ground. In 2001, the squad piled up 2,565 yards for a average, which was the third highest in the Atlantic 10 and a new school record. The Rams topped that total by amassing 2,904 yards in After graduating from Presbyterian College in 1989 with a degree in political science and a minor in physical education, Nichols began his coaching career on the Blue Hose sideline in As an assistant coach, he worked with the quarterbacks and running backs while serving dual roles as he was also the director of campus life for the team members. In July 1992, Nichols started his coaching tenure with Georgia Southern as the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. There, he worked with a variety of student-athletes including wide receivers, running backs, defensive ends, kickers and specialists. His responsibilities included assignment of coaches, being in charge of all visits (official and unofficial), evaluations and all NCAA compliance matters. He helped guide the team to the 1993 Southern Conference title and two Division I-AA playoff berths (1993, 1995). In each of those years, the team won its first-round game before falling to the eventual national champion (Youngstown State and Montana) and finished In five years, Nichols helped the Eagles to a mark. Nichols returned to PC in December of 1996 in the same role his had at Georgia Southern. In his return to PC, Nichols coached the wide receivers, kickers and specialists. He helped head coach Daryl Dickey take the Blue Hose from 5-6 in 1997 to 8-3 and 7-4 the next two seasons before taking the job at Rhode Island. A standout recruiter, Nichols has recruited in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut, North Carolina and South Carolina. He and his wife, Dee, have an older daughter, Cassie, and twins, Corey and Cameron. WHAT IS A BLUE HOSE? A Blue Hose is a fierce Scotch-Irish warrior. If you have ever seen the movie Braveheart, you have seen a true Blue Hose. Despite this depiction, it still has been asked many times where Presbyterian College received its Blue Hose nickname. Several rumors exist and Ray Frank in his book, What s In A Nickname delved into the subject. Frank discovered that there were many opinions. One story had it that the Presbyterian Scotch-Irish wore blue stockings in the Puritan beginnings of our country. Another said that a fierce war-like band of Scotch-Irish named the Hose painted their entire bodies blue before going into battle. Yet, probably the true story lies in a letter dated June 15, 1935, written by then PC athletic director Walter Johnson to an inquiring English professor in Virginia... (quoting from Walter Johnson s letter) It was about the second or third year, 1915, if I remember right. I think it happened this way: I changed uniform colors to blue, wearing blue stockings and jerseys, and some sports writer started calling in his articles the Presbyterian College teams the Blue Stockings.... in later years Stocking became abbreviated to the Hose, particularly in newspaper headlines, and was more or less officially adopted by the student body in the 1950 s. All the PC media guides since 1996 continued to elaborate on the issue, quoting an article by Ben Hay Hammet entitled The Spirt of PC. The piece by Hammet articulated that, Johnson always insisted on the fact that his players wear long blue socks similar to stockings (after all, there were White Sox and Red Sox in baseball). Coach Johnson s explanation may simply be coincidental to the fact that the phrase Blue Stocking Presbyterian goes back informally quite a few years in the denomination s history. Nevertheless, PC s athletic nickname was shortened to Blue Hose in 1954.

11 BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE Since its founding in 1983, the Big South Conference has matured into a competitive leader in college athletics, actively pursuing excellence on the field of play and in the classroom. The League s growing presence as an NCAA Division I athletic conference is evident by athletic accomplishments on the national stage, innovative marketing and media partnerships, increased television packages, and quality athletic competition while intentionally fostering the academic, personal, social, athletic and leadership development of each student-athlete. This has evolved into the Conference s mission of Developing Leaders Through Athletics. The Big South Conference was formed on August 21, 1983, when Charleston Southern (then Baptist College) Athletic Director Howard Bagwell and Augusta President George Christenberry began recruiting members into the Big South, receiving initial commitments from Augusta, Charleston Southern, Campbell, Coastal Carolina and Winthrop. One month later, Dr. Edward M. Singleton was selected as the League s first Commissioner and continued to solicit new members. His efforts led to the additions of Armstrong State, Radford and UNC Asheville, giving the Big South more than the required six members to constitute an official conference. The Big South s first year of competition was in the Fall of 1984, and in September 1986, the Big South Conference was granted full-fledged NCAA Division I status. During its infancy and prior to securing automatic bids to NCAA Championships, the Big South made early strides in earning at-large berths in several national postseason events, including volleyball, women s basketball and women s golf. In 1989, George F. Buddy Sasser replaced the retiring Dr. Singleton as Commissioner, and in 1990, the League received its first automatic bid receiving an automatic qualifier to the NCAA Baseball Championship. Under Sasser s seven years of leadership, the Conference implemented its public relations and compliance programs, and introduced its first-ever men s basketball television package, featuring the Big South competing among some of the finest teams in the nation. In August 1996, Kyle B. Kallander replaced Sasser as the League s third Commissioner, and in his 13 years at the helm of the Big South, Kallander has been instrumental in aggressively promoting the Conference to new levels. The Conference has enjoyed record levels in marketing revenue during the past several years, he has brought television coverage to Big South women s basketball, baseball and softball for the first time in Conference history, as well as increased national television exposure to the League as a whole through aggressive and unique television packages. Under Kallander s leadership, the Big South developed and initiated its first long-range strategic plan, re-affirming the League s vision as a distinctive athletic Conference committed to the quality of institutional life through athletic competition. He also spearheaded the efforts to add football as a championship sport, which came to fruition in 2002, and has solidified Conference membership with the additions of High Point, Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian, and in , the return of charter member Campbell University. Kallander s long range vision has also included technological advancements, as the Conference introduced its first live event video streaming in 2005 and has since expanded its video offerings to more than 600 events annually through a partnership with the member institutions, as well as the creation of several online and social media platforms. In the last 15 years alone, the Big South Conference has experienced monumental growth and success in nearly every sport. During this time, the Conference has had two individual National Champions, more than 200 All- Americans, has reached the Sweet 16 in men s soccer, women s basketball and baseball, has received national Top 25 rankings in men s soccer, men s basketball, women s basketball, baseball, men s outdoor track & field, and men s golf, had an individual selected to play in the NCAA Singles Championship four times in addition to the first men s tennis doubles at-large selection, had the No. 1 ranked men s golfer in the country, has had the nation s top scoring men s basketball team three consecutive years as well as the national men s basketball scoring leader twice, received an at-large playoff berth in the Football Championship Subdivision in 2006, and had an institution finish fifth in the NCAA Men s Golf Championships the Conference s highest-ever team finish in an NCAA event. In alone, the Big South was the only Conference nationwide to have an at-large participant in the football playoffs (Coastal Carolina), a team in the Second Round of the NCAA Men s Basketball Tournament (Winthrop) and a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Baseball Regionals (Coastal Carolina). In fact, Coastal Carolina s baseball program has been a No. 1 seed three out of the last five years, while its FCS playoff berth in 2006 came in just the fifth-year of the Big South s football existence. The Conference s tagline, Developing Leaders Through Athletics was unveiled in in conjunction with the Conference s 25th Anniversary. The League also honored its heritage with the Top 25 Best of the Best moments in League history from , with Liberty University s 10-year women s basketball championship run from being crowned the No. 1 moment in the Big South s first 25 years. The Conference s on-field accomplishments have been duplicated in the classroom. Annually, more than 40 percent of Conference student-athletes are named to the Big South s Presidential Honor Roll for maintaining a cumulative 3.0 grade-point average, and the League has had more than 95 Academic All-Americans in its quarter-century of existence.
