1 School Name: Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (SIUe) Mascot: Cougars Location: Edwardsville, Illinois NCFA Conference: Great Lakes West Coach(s): Matt Malak, Conor Heffernan, Ryan McClure Captain(s): Matt Malak, Conor Heffernan, Ryan McClure, Rest TBD 2012 Performance: Record: 6-2 Final Conference Ranking: Final National Ranking: Notables: Number of Returning Players: 20 Number of Returning Starters: 10 Returning Player Award Winners/Accolades: 1 st team All-American QB Conor Heffernan, 1 st team All- American WR Patrick Young. Players to Watch/New additions: Coming off a 6-2 record, SIUe plans to hit the ground running this upcoming season. With momentum from their victory against Rollins College in Orlando, FL, they plan to continue their success with returning starters on both sides of the ball. Although there are many new faces this year, the veterans feel very comfortable meshing their experience with the freshness of the new guys. While SIUe has a very sound collection of defensive gladiators, let s not forget about the highly potent offense. QB Connor Heffernan, WR Patrick Young and WR Kevin Keeven look good on paper and even better in person. These players in particular are definitely something to be aware of and are as fun to watch for the fans as much as they are a nightmare for opposing defenses. Because of this great trio, the defense gets plenty of quality at practice. Led by returning linebackers Ryan McClure and Alphonzo Kinnebrew, there is a lot to look forward to. In the trenches lurk veterans like Doug Croft, Dustin McCurdy, Zack Buckley, and Trevor Moist. Also key to SIUe's defensive success last year was in the defensive backfield, look for that to remain the same this year with returning starter Matt Malak at corner. A few new players to watch are DB Mitch McPherson and LB Chris Brand, Linemen Terry Taborn, along with return specialist Nasir Almasri. There has been a great amount of effort demonstrated during this off season. While many players don t live local, those that do have shown impressive determination to improve individually and as a team. However, all returning players and a few new ones came together at the end of July to brush up on their skills and get back in the groove of things. Football isn t a sport you can simply turn on once school starts; it must be practiced over and over again until perfected,
2 and then practiced again. With SIUe s first game coming in the 3 rd week of the semester, there is much preparation yet to do but the pressure is much less an issue at this point. Biggest Rival: Whoever stands across the field from us Best Player Nickname: The 7, 8, 9 Offense, Bro King, Hollywood 2013 Season Outlook: As a team, the lack of a coach has not been a disadvantage but instead a strength. Players have only each other to trust and hold accountable, and no outside force controlling how things are to be done. Every aspect of the season is taken care by a committee of players lead by 2 nd year President Matt Malak. SIUE is looking to regain their #1 ranked offense, and will not accept anything less. Because there is no higher level of play to reach, the players are here simply for the love of the game. Nothing compares to being surrounded by a group of people that share a common goal. Head Coach Quote: Pain heals. Chicks dig scars. Glory... lasts forever.
