Players have been told that they will be contacted no later than August 15. Many people go on vacation in August, it may take several attempts to contact your players. Division Format Please make sure you have a copy of the rules for your division. They are available at the coaches meeting, or you may request a copy from your commissioner. It is very important to know the rules for your specific division. 4

5 Game Cancellation procedures Your commissioner makes the final call so please do not assume that your games are canceled. You will be contacted by your commissioner prior to the start of your game. Other divisions may have canceled their games, this does not mean your game is canceled. You must here from your commissioner. Unless you hear from your commissioner the game is on! Field Set-up Each team in your division is responsible for setting up the field once or twice during the season. This involves lining the field and setting the goals in place, and making sure the first aid kit is available at midfield for the day s games. This process takes roughly one half hour and we have tried to schedule the teams that have the early game, on that day, for this duty. We would prefer that the coachers do not handle this duty, and have one of the parents on your team take care of this for you. One less job you need to worry about. The team with the last game that day is responsible for putting the corner flags and medical kits in the shed before leaving the field. You will receive a field set-up schedule prior to the start of the season. Pictures Soccer pictures are held at Matawan/Aberdeen Regional High school on September 19. Picture forms will be distributed a few weeks before the date with a schedule of the time that your team is scheduled. Please be early and have your team dressed in their uniforms and no cleats. Raffle The soccer raffle has changed. Instead of filling out tickets and collecting the raffle books, each family is assigned a raffle card. This numbered card is their raffle ticket and will be distributed midway through the season. Each number is automatically entered into the drawing, which is held in 5

6 December at the year end Awards Ceremony. You do not have to collect this card from the parents. This raffle card can be sold to a relative or friend if the family wants to recoup some of the cost of the raffle. ($20) Make a Difference Day Garbage cans are setup at each field to collect non-perishable goods. This day is. We just ask that you remind your kids and parents a few days before the event. This has been very successful in the past and is for a good cause. Team Schedule You will receive a team schedule prior to the season. Listed below are the playing fields for each division. These ratings are used to try and evenly distribute the players the following season, and identify potential travel players. Preventing a BLOW OUT We have all been a part of both ends of this issue. (or your will be) Either the blown out team or the blowing them out team. The Aberdeen/Matawan Soccer League has a very firm philosophy regarding this issue. Try to prevent a blow out situation at all costs Most coaches, who come to the board after blowing another team out 10 or 11 to 0, are unaware of what they could have done to keep the score to 6 or 7. Here are a few things you can do: 1. Put your top scorer in goal. 2. Put your goal scorer s on defense. 3. Play with one less player on the field. 4. Tell you team to work on passing the ball and switching the field 5. Make these adjustments when it is 4 or 5 to 0 not when it is 8 to does not benefit either team. We try to make the league as balanced as possible, but as the season goes on there are games that teams will be missing players due to other obligations. 8 Player Rating Sheet Please use the following numbers to rate the players on your team. 1 Does not participate-does not run or get involved in the play. 2 Participates- Tries to get involved. Kicks the ball and runs around the field. Listens to directions from the coach. 3 Dribble and Steal-gets involved in the play. Is not afraid to try to steal the ball and dribble around other players. Follows directions from the coach. 4 Confident-Easily steals and dribbles the ball. Listens and learns from the coach. Knows how to shoot the ball to score. 5 Elite- Does all of the above and can pass the ball to other players. Knows positions, both offense and defense. Travel potential. 8

9 (Sample welcome letter for the coaches to send to each player, this is customized for the muchkin/peanut division) Welcome to the Munchkin/Peanuts Soccer Season! and are your son/daughter s coach. We are looking forward to coaching your son/daughter, and are Rutgers Certified coaches. The name of our team is the. The Aberdeen/Matawan Soccer league has a fun format for the Munchkin/Peanut division. Instead of having each team with a roster of 11 or 12 players they have reduced that to 8 or 9. Each game is played 4 against 4 with no goalies, instead of the usual 7 against 7. This will give the kids much more opportunity to touch the ball and develop some basic skills. In the past you would have a pack of 14 kids running after the ball all over the field. This will minimize this problem and allow each player the opportunity to be involved in the game. This format is used all over the world. Each game is one hour long. The first 20 minutes are instructional. 14 & 15 year old soccer players will teach your kids basic skills using fun games to keep their attention. The final 35 or 40 minutes will be a 4 vs. 4 game played against other teams in the league. It is unlimited substitutions on the fly (similar to hockey), so everyone will play a good amount. As the season progresses there will be less instruction and more playing. I have included a roster of the team. Our first game is Saturday, September 4 at field. (see attached schedule) Each player must wear shin guards and cleats. We will be using a size #3 soccer ball. We ask that each child have their own ball. Sport Authority/Dicks Sporting Goods usually run a special for cleats, shin guards, and a ball for $25. Because this is probably the first or second organized team your child has been involved with, we ask that you remain close by during the games. The kids are young and sometimes need to see that you are there. We also would love any parent who wants to get involved in any way with the team to let us know. It does not matter if you have never kicked a soccer ball in your life. If you know how to have fun, you are welcome! Each parent will be responsible for bringing a post game snack for the team. We will rotate down the roster and coordinate this before the first game. Please send plenty of water with your child to the games. We know how hot early September can be! 9

10 We will need a few parents to volunteer to help set up the field on and. It only requires one half hour of your time, the morning before our game and involves lining the field and putting up 4 corner flags. Please let me know when you would be available. No training is required. The Aberdeen/Matawan soccer league has already enrolled you in the famous Year End Raffle. This was included in your sign-up fee. It is refreshing to know that you do not have to do extra fundraising. You will receive a card with your raffle number printed on the card. Your number is entered into the drawing that is held at the league Awards Ceremony in December. You do not have to return the card or fill out any raffle tickets. Feel free to sell your card to a friend or relative if you would like to recover the cost of the raffle ($20) Enclosed is a calendar outlining the important dates throughout the season.
