1 The QH AYSO fall soccer season is about to begin! Practices will start the week of August 1st for 16U and 19U teams and August 14th for 6U14U. The first day of games will be Sept. 9th for all teams 6U14U and the 5U Jamboree program! Please read through our preseason newsletter for important information on the six Philosophies of AYSO, Kids Zone, team referee requirements for 10U14U, free coach and referee clinics, field painting day, Picture Day, etc. In addition, there is information on how you can get more involved our website, or feel free to call our Region Hotline at anytime someone will contact you! AYSO Region 638 would like to thank and welcome you to the 2017 soccer season. We are excited our region has nearly 1750 players! That many players are great, but keep in mind it requires additional support for our players in the form of coaches, referees, team parents, board members and volunteers in general (you can help). It also means many of these new volunteers will experience "on the job training", and for no pay. Referees, Coaches and all the other volunteers may make an occasional mistake. A goal may be disallowed, a penalty kick not awarded, a player not played in the position a parent thinks is best and so on. This is a learning experience for the child as well as the adults. It is everyone's responsibility to make the AYSO experience the best one possible for the children. Kids Zone is a unique program that includes a parent pledge that moms and dads sign to commit to positive, encouraging behavior game by trying new things, making mistakes, and trying again. Sideline critics who scream instructions at players or criticize referees or coaches just slow down the learning process and make it less fun for everyone. This year we have two teams, so come out to Lane Park at 9:10am or Lower Joe Walker 3 at 10:20am on any Saturday to catch a game! 3 Field Painting Day!! 6U: 8:00 am. Lane Park Each and every Saturday, our Snack Bar is ready to serve! We have such yummy treats as hot dogs, hamburgers, nachos, pepper bellies and SnoCones just to name a few!!! It is a great place to pick up the forgotten water or snack, and to feed your hunger. You can even purchase QH AYSO tshirts, sweatshirts, and hats! Anyone that would like to help volunteer in the Snack Bar please contact our new Ways and Means Director, Luis Garcia, at U: 8:00 am, Lane Park Stop by the Snack Bar and support our Region! Our entire Board, all coaches, and all referees are people just like you parents and other family members, members of your community, etc. Please be respectful of the time they donate to our Region, know that they are out here to help and support our children, and that everyone is working hard to do the best that they can so our children can have the best soccer experience possible!

6 soccer. U.S. Youth Soccer, the governing body for all youth soccer in the United States, has mandated Player Development Initiatives and AYSO has implemented those initiatives. The purpose of these initiatives is to develop players with more individual skill, intelligence, creativity and confidence by focusing on the development of the individual and providing players the best opportunity to develop. These changes will be implemented at every level of youth soccer, from the expensive "club" and travel programs such as CalSouth, to the local recreational leagues like AYSO. For those of us who have participated in youth soccer over the past few decades as players, coaches, referees and parents, some of these changes might be a little surprising. And certainly, change is never easy. We ask that all players, parents, coaches, and referees of QH AYSO please help us as we implement these mandated changes on the faith that it will improve the program and overall soccer experience for our children. The changes listed below will be implemented beginning Fall Updated training for coaches and referees will be offered as we approach the start of the season. The effective date of age determination shall be based on the calendar year rather than the year in which the season ends. For example, this upcoming season is the season so a player will be registered based on the age they turn in the year Division nomenclature is changed to XU from UX, e.g. 10U instead of U10. This aligns with the change made by U.S. Youth Soccer (U.S.Y.S.). This change also aligns with the change in registration determination age. A player during the season may be 10 or younger. QH AYSO will continue with the same small sided number of players and roster sizes as this past season: 3 v. 3 for 6U with rosters of 6 players, 4 v. 4 for 8U with rosters of 7 players, 7 v. 7 for 10U with rosters of 9 players, and 9 v. 9 for 12U with rosters of 12 players. There are some goal size changes for 8U 12U but QH AYSO will not be implementing these changes immediately due to the cost impact. Field dimensions for 8U, 10U and 12U have changed to be slightly smaller. The buildout line for 10U will be added. The buildout line exists only in this age group. It serves two purposes related to match play. First, for a goal kick or when the goalkeeper has possession, the opposing team must back up behind the line. Second, it will replace the function of the halfway line in offside decisions. A kickin, passin or dribblein shall be used for 6U to 8U in lieu of a throwin. The throwin becomes part of training and match play at 10U. There shall be no goalkeepers in 8U and younger. This previously was a recommendation that QH AYSO had implemented a few years ago. The goalkeeper shall not punt the ball in 10U through 12U. No heading in 12U and below. This requirement was instituted in the season.

7 Want to play SOCCER YEARROUND? Check out TOURNAMENT Season! Coaches, parents and players, When the Fall AYSO season ends, the fun doesn't have to! If you are committed to soccer, you will want to ask your coach, division coordinator, Tournament Director or any board member about the options to play tournament soccer!! Region 638 Tournament Soccer Winter through Summer Players who desire to play soccer yearround are strongly encouraged to apply to be considered for a tournament team. Tournament teams are formed from players that have played during the Fall regular season and are chosen by the coaches who have been selected to by our Regional board based on their coaching ability and commitment to AYSO philosophies. Benefits of playing on a Tournament team Playing against a higher level of competition. Tournament teams play between 48 tournaments a season from November to May or June, both Saturday and Sundays with a minimum of 3 games a weekend which equals more than 20 games a tournament season! Tournaments are held throughout Southern California with an option to attend some out of state. Who can play Tournament? Players must have played at least half the Fall regular season (played in at least 5 games) for an AYSO team. Players must be committed to playing tournament soccer and make it a priority! Teams and players have final approval from the Tournament Director and Regional Commissioner. Who can coach a Tournament Team? Any certified AYSO volunteer with ageappropriate AYSO Coaching Certification may apply. Coaches with a proven track record of upholding AYSO philosophies are awarded tournament teams by the Tournament Director and staff. Coaching is a privilege, not a right. Coaches must be committed to scouting players during the regular Fall season and choosing a team based not just on talent, but on chemistry and commitment. Coaches must be well organized from training sessions to administrative duties. Want to attend a tryout? Visit for an application.
