What is a Chanticleer? Chanticleer (SHON-ti-cleer) gives Coastal Carolina University one of the most unique nicknames in all of sports. Chanticleer comes from Chaucer s Canterbury Tales and came to the University when it was a member of the University of South Carolina system from A Chanticleer is a rooster who rules the barnyard with cunning and wit. His competitiveness never wanes as he battles to the end, using his brains to come out on top every time. was ranked third in two polls in the final regular-season poll of the season. Coastal Carolina has started 5-0 for the second straight season also the only two times it has happened in program history. The Chanticleers began last season 9-0 and climbed to #3 in FCS Coaches poll and the previous high of #5 in The Sports Network. With the win over Furman, Coastal Carolina: improved to 21-1 over its last 22 regular-season games versus FCS opponents 24-3 over its last 27 overall games versus FCS opponents (including playoffs) 24-4 over its last 28 total games (including a game versus then FBS #11 South Carolina) won its 12th straight regular-season game versus a non-conference FCS opponent remained one of seven teams in the NCAA FCS unbeaten joins Eastern Kentucky as the only two FCS team to be 4-0 on the road through six weeks this season improved to 5-1 all-time versus the Paladins including four straight wins, but all six games in the series have been decided by seven points or less won at Furman in overtime for the second time in as many trips In 2012 Coach Moglia s second game with CCU Coastal won in triple overtime in Greenville. improved to 3-0 in overtime games in the Moglia era and improves to 6-3 all-time in overtime games improved to 10-8 all-time versus the Southern Conference, including a win at The Citadel in the 2014 season opener However, Coastal has now won seven of the last eight meetings with a SoCon member with its lone loss coming at then #17 Appalachian State in won for just the 10th time in 29 games played on artificial turf (10-29) However, the Chants are 6-1 on their last seven appearances on artificial turf that lone loss coming at #1 North Dakota State in the 2013 NCAA FCS quarterfinal and are 7-4 in its last 11 appearances on artificial surfaces (those four losses include setbacks at FBS Toledo, at then #17 Appalachian State, at then #3 Old Dominion in the 2012 NCAA FCS 2nd Round and at #1 North Dakota State in the 2013 NCAA FCS quarterfinal). CCU throws for 205 yards vs Furman Coastal Carolina threw for 205 yards, completed 15-of-24 passes (.625) and three TDs versus a Furman defense that led the FCS in fewest passing yards allowed per games. Furman, now #2 in FCS fewest passing yards allowed, was allowing just yards per game and had not allowed over 200 yards in a single game. On the Flip Side Coastal Carolina defense only allowed Furman to throw for 127 yards, the third-fewest passing yards allowed by the Chants this season. Coastal ranks sixth in the FCS in fewest passing yards allowed (146.2 ypg) Furman did manage to throw a TD pass with 4:45 left in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 28-28, marking the first TD pass Coastal has allowed this season. Despite Allowing 403 yards of offense and 31 points Coastal Carolina defense allowed season highs in both total yards and points, but still ranks 10th in the FCS and first in the Big South in scoring defense (14.3 ppg) and 47th in the FCS in total defense (357.0 ypg). On The Road AGAIN, & AGAIN, & AGAIN, & AGAIN & AGAIN For the fifth time in seven games this season, Coastal Carolina will hit the road, traveling to Clinton to face Presbyterian. Coastal Carolina joins Eastern Kentucky as the only schools that are 4-0 on the road to start (Also, Coastal and Eastern Kentucky open 2014 by playing five of their first seven games on the road.) Coastal Carolina is 10-6 when playing on the road in the Moglia era. Of the six losses: ^ Two came in the NCAA FCS playoffs at then #3 Old Dominion and at #1 North Dakota State. ^ Two came at NCAA FBS programs Toledo (2012) and then #11 South Carolina (2013). ^ Two came at then #16 Appalachian State (2012) and at then #16 Charleston Southern (2013). Coastal Carolina Sets Three-Game Record for Fewest Points Coastal Carolina became the first Big South team to hold opponents to three points or less in three consecutive games. The Chants defeated SC State 31-3, FAMU 48-3 and Elon The nine points was CCU s best three-game defensive scoring effort since allowing 17 points in 2008, holding Monmouth to seven points, Towson to three and NC A&T to seven points. All Good Things Must Come to an End as Furman Scores TD Furman scored a touchdown on its third possession after being forced to punt on its first drive and turning the ball over on downs on the CCU one yard line on its second drive. Overall, Coastal went 13 quarters without allowing a touchdown (from the 7:16 mark in the fourth quarter of game two at NC A&T until 5:24 left in the second quarter of game six at Furman) MORE IMPRESSIVELY, opponents went 43 drives over three-plus games without reaching the end zone EVEN MORE IMPRESSIVE, over those 43 drives without scoring a TD, opponents only reached the CCU red zone five times and scored just twice, both being field goals. Coastal Win Streaks Continue After Furman Victory Coastal won its 12th straight regular-season game versus a non-conference FCS opponent When CCU Rushes for 200, a W is Near Guarantee Now in its 12th season of football, Coastal Carolina is 61-5 (.924) when rushing for at least 200 yards in a game. Coastal Carolina rushed for at least 200 for the fifth straight game gaining 213 yards at NC

4 C oastal A&T, 211 versus SC State, 244 at FAMU, 205 versus Elon and 213 at Furman Coastal Carolina has rushed for 200-plus yards in 23 of Joe Moglia s 34 games as CCU s head coach, posting an 22-1 record in such games CCU fell to #11 Stony Brook in 2012, rushing for 201 yards and has won each of its last 21 games when rushing for over 200 yards. All-time, Coastal Carolina is 61-5 (.924) when rushing for at least 200 yards. Coastal Carolina is averaging rushing yards per game over its last 28 games When in Home Coastal Carolina owns the Big South s longest active home win streak at 11 games. Coastal won its last two home games of 2012, all seven home games of 2013 and is 2-0 in home games this season. Coastal Carolina is (.753) all-time at Brooks Stadium. While the Chanticleers open 2014 with five of its first seven games on the road, Coastal ends the 2014 regular season by playing three of its final five games at home. The two failures came on Furman s second drive when, on 1st-and-goal from the nine, the Chants. The other failed attempt came in double-overtime, a missed 36- yard field. Closing Games With Authority Coastal Carolina has had defining drives late in all six games this season that have led to wins or at least kept the ball out of opponents hands, although the one at Furman ended with a blocked field goal, but still. At Furman with the game tied at with 4:37 left in the game and the Chanticleer defense allowing three straight touchdowns, Coastal Carolina s offense used 12 plays to travel 63 yards to get to the Furman six before calling a timeout to kick a potential game-winning field goal with 10 seconds left. However, the kick was blocked and the Chants would need double overtime to win In game one, Coastal had a critical 14-play, 61-yard drive that took 6:28 off the clock that ended in a field goal to make the core and put the game out of reach at The Citadel. In game two and clinging to a one-point lead, ran the final 3:27 off the clock (7 plays for 46 yards) to secure the win at NC A&T. In game three, while CCU got the SC State 17 but forced to punt due to several penalties, Coastal used 11 plays and ultimately just 22 yards after penalties to run 7:53 off the clock the third longest drive in terms of time of possession in CCU history In game four, Coastal closed the win at FAMU with a 7-play drive that consumed the final 4:36 off the clock. Unfortunately, Coastal took a knee on the FAMU six yard line on the final snap In game five, with Coastal owning a 10-3 lead with 7:38 left in the third quarter and coming off drives that ended in a fumble and missed field goal, Alex Ross took over, leading the Chants to three straight touchdowns throwing two and running for one with two drives taking 5:20 off the clock During those three drives, Ross completed 12-of-14 passes for 136 yards and 2 TDs with 2 rushes for 32 yards and a 24-yard TD The Last Time CCU had a FG Blocked The last time Coastal Carolina had a field goal blocked came in the closing seconds of the first half by Presbyterian s Brian Davis in 2011 on Grant Clayton s 41-yard attempt. He was additionally tabbed the Big South Offensive Player of the Week by CollegeSportsMadnes. com and was #2 on the BeyondSportsNetwork.com list of Top 15 FCS Athletes of the Week. Henderson rushed for a career-high 172 yards (20 attempts) and two touchdowns in leading Coastal Carolina to a 30-3 victory over South Carolina State. Henderson gained 122 yards on 15 carries in the first half alone and opened the game s scoring with a six-yard run on the Chanticleers first drive. He added five carries for 50 yards in the third quarter, including a 32-yard TD run to clinch the game, but did not see action in the fourth quarter. Henderson averaged 8.6 yards per rush in recording the seventh-highest, single-game rushing total in school history. Granger Sets CCU Record with 51-yard FG Sophomore Ryan Granger came off the bench to drill a CCU-record 51-yard field goal to provide the 48-3 final at Florida A&M. Granger has made all three of his career field goal attempts (2-for-2 last season with makes from 39 and 44 yards) Granger is also 3-for-3, all last season, on PATs. Brown Sets Record Devin Brown is the first Chanticleer with two career kickoff returns. Only two other Chants have ever returned a kick for a TD: Arthur Sitton and Tre Henderson. On the Mapp Sophomore Bruce Mapp was lauded in the preseason by quarterback Alex Ross and head coach Joe Moglia. Mapp lived up to the billing by tying a school record with 10 receptions for 108 yards and a touchdown in the season-opening win at The Citadel. Last week, he caught a team-high five passes for 71 yards. Mapp added eight receptions for 77 yards and two touchdowns in the win over Elon. Backus Honored Again; Ross Gets First Honor For the second time this season, Buck Buchanan Award candidate Quinn Backus was named both Big South Defensive Player of the Week and a National All-Star by College Sporting News, while Walter Payton Award candidate Alex Ross was named the Choice Hotels Big South Offensive Player of the Week for the fist time in his career. Backus, the lone defensive player of the five All-Stars recognized by College Sporting News, tallied 13 tackles, including eight solo stops, en route to becoming Coastal Carolina s all-time tackles leader, now with 365, as well as becoming the Big South s all-time leader for solo tackles, now with 201. Backus is also the active leader among NCAA FCS players in both categories as well. Among his 13 tackles versus Elon, 2.5 went for losses, including a sixyard sack. Backus added two pass breakups and two quarterback hurries in the win. He set the tone on Elon s opening series with four stops, including a sack on third down, during the six-play drive. For his career, Backus has earned Big South Defensive Player of the Week honors 10 times - not including a Freshman of the Week honor in and has been a National Player of the Week on six occasions. Ross earns his first career Big South Choice Hotels Offensive Player of the Week honor. (Note, Ross was a Big South Freshman of the Week in his lone start of the 2012 season.) The junior completed 34 passes on 47 attempts and tallied 426 yards of total offense - all Coastal Carolina single-game records. In addition, the 34 completions and 426 yards of total offense rank fourth on the Big South single-game list. Overall, Ross threw for 338 yards and two touchdowns while rushing nine times for a game-high 88 yards, including a 24-yard touchdown. While effective in the first half - completing 21-of-29 passes for 202 yards - Ross was even more impressive in the second half. After converting just 2-of-8 third down opportunities in the first half, Ross helped the Chants convert 5-of-7 third down opportunities in the second half, specifically by completing passes for first downs on each of CCU s last five third down chances. Also, with Coastal owning a 10-3 lead midway through the third quarter, Ross led Coastal to touchdowns on three consecutive possessions to put the game out of reach. During those three drives, he completed 12-of-14 passes for 136 yards, including a pair of 10-yard touchdown passes to Bruce Mapp, and added a 24-yard touchdown run to cap a four-play, 71-yard drive during which he completed all three pass attempts for 47 yards. Brown & Henderson Earn Big South Honors (NC A&T) Coastal Carolina sophomores Devin Brown and De Angelo Henderson were each honored by the Big South Conference for their performances in the Chanticleers win at North Carolina A&T this past weekend. Brown was selected the Big South Special Teams Player of the Week, and Henderson was selected the Big South s Choice Hotels Offensive Player of the Week. With Coastal down six after a NC A&T touchdown midway through the fourth quarter, Brown returned the ensuing kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown. Alex Catron added the extra point to make the score 31-30, which proved to be the final score. The 99-yard return is the longest touchdown play in Coastal Carolina history and the third-longest in Big South history, preceded by only two 100-yard kick returns in the league in the past. Brown returned a kick 95 yards last season in a win versus VMI, previously the school record for long scoring play. Brown was named a first team All-Big South kick returner and Freshman All-American last season after setting a CCU single-season record with 632 kick return yards. He is just 552 yards shy of the CCU career record for kick return yards. Henderson rushed for a career-high 131 yards on 19 attempts (6.9 avg.) with a touchdown versus a North Carolina A&T defense that led the NCAA FCS in rush defense last season (90.3 yards per game). He added four receptions for 28 yards, nearly matching his 2013 season total of four receptions for 39 yards in 15 games. Henderson was most effective on Coastal Carolina s final drive. Starting on the CCU 14 with 4:08 left in the game and clinging to a one-point lead, Henderson had runs of 10 and 11 yards for first downs to start the drive and later had a six-yard run with 41 seconds left for a first down to seal the victory. All told, of Henderson s 19 rushing attempts, the Summerville product had 10 runs that went for either a first down or a touchdown. Brown ranks second in the NCAA FCS in kick returns, averaging 39.2 yards per attempt through two games, and 59th in the nation in all-purpose yards (114.5 yards per game). Henderson has 219 rushing yards in two games, which ranks 16th-best in the NCAA FCS, and

6 ranks 41st in the nation in all-purpose yards (129.0 yards per game). C oastal Quinn Backus Honored Nationally and by Big South (vs Citadel) Quinn Backus earned his three honors after recording 14 tackles (nine solo) and forcing two fumbles at The Citadel. The senior tallied 11 of those stops through three quarters as Coastal was leading 21-3 and led a defense that had surrendered just 231 yards of total offense to that point. His 14 stops not only led the team, but were the fifth-best, single-game total of his career and his 15th career double-digit tackle effort. In 29 career starts, Backus led the team in tackles 19 times. Backus has now been named Big South Defensive Player of the Week nine times not including him earning Big South Freshman of the Week honors once and has earned a national weekly honor five times. The Good and the Bad From the Citadel Win BAD: Coastal s defense allowed 358 rushing yards, which is the fifth most yards an opponent has gained versus CCU GOOD: The Citadel only completed 1-of-8 passes for 19 yards. The 1 completion and 8 attempts is the second fewest allowed by a CCU defense, while the 19 passing yards is the third fewest allowed GOOD: Coastal shutout The Citadel in the first half (leading 14-0) and only allowed 155 yards of total offense GOOD: Coastal led 21-3 through three quarters and held The Citadel to just 231 yards of total offense through three quarters BAD: Coastal lost the fourth quarter, 13-10, and allowed 146 yards of total offense in the fourth quarter alone all on the ground GREAT: When needed after The Citadel scored to make the score with 8:55 left in the fourth Coastal Carolina put together a 14-play, 61-yard drive that took 6:28 off the clock and ended with a field goal to essentially put the game out of reach, making the score with 2:27 left. FACT: While Coastal s defense did allow 146 yards in the fourth quarter, 71 of those came on The Citadel s final drive (5 plays, 71 yards to provide the final with one minute left in the game. Notes from the win at North Carolina A&T Coastal Carolina s first four possessions of the game ended with a fumble, an interception, a punt and a fumble inside the NC A&T five Coastal s defense kept NC A&T off the scoreboard on each of the three turnovers as NC A&T missed a field goal and punted twice. Coastal opened the second half with interceptions on its first two possessions, including one inside the NC A&T 3-yd line on the first drive of the second half Coastal s defense forced a punt and allowed a field goal after those two turnovers. Despite having five turnovers, NC A&T managed just three points off the turnovers. After returning the kickoff for a TD to take a lead with 6:58 left, Coastal defense held NC A&T to a six-play, 17-yard drive that ended on the CCU 40 (after a sack by Leroy Cummings on 3rd-and-9) with a punt Coastal s offense put together an impressive fourth-quarter drive to put the game away Starting on its own 14, ran the final 4:08 off the clock picking up four first downs for the win. Notes from the win versus SC State Coastal held the Bulldogs to just three points The last time CCU s defense only allowed three points (or less) was a 20-3 victory versus Catawba on Sept. 10, 2011 (a span of 40 games) The last time Coastal held an opponent scoreless in the second half was a 42-7 victory versus Gardner-Webb last season (a span of nine games). While Coastal s defense, by all accounts, played well, SC State still out-gained Coastal A 10-play, 52-yard drive by SC State on its first possession ended with a missed 43-yard field goal. The Bulldogs final drive of the game was a 15-play, 62-yard drive that ended with a turnover on downs SC State only averaged 22.8 yards on its other 10 possessions of the game with two drives ending with fumbles and one with an interception. Pretty Good Company for Backus and Henderson Coastal Carolina has two players Quinn Backus and De Angelo Henderson that were among the eight finalists for the 2010 South Carolina Mr. Football Award. Their peers were not only considered the top players in the state, but they were considered among the top players in the nation coming out of high school. They, like Backus and Henderson, have lived up to the hype.
