Exhibition Game Truman State University Bulldogs (0-0) vs. University of Iowa Hawkeyes (0-0) Thursday, November 11th Carver-Hawkeye Arena Iowa City, Iowa 7:00 p.m. Tip-off This Week s Game: Truman will open up the season with an exhibition game at the University of Iowa. The Bulldogs were picked ninth in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association preseason coaches poll but return four out of five starters, including first-team all-miaa Sarah Sommer. After missing most of last season with an injury, senior Annie Westhoff returns just 58 points shy of becoming the 12th Bulldogs in school history to achieve 1,000 points in her career. The Bulldogs finished the season with a overall mark and a 3-15 conference record. They were 6-2 in non-conference games last season, 4-1 in non-conference road games. Scouting The Hawkeyes: This is the second and final exhibition game for Iowa after defeating the Australian Institute of Sport on Nov. 4th. In that game, junior guard Crystal Smith had a career high 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting. Jamie Cavey was the leading scorer a year ago with a 16.8 points per game average. Cavey hit over 50% from the field during the season and had 138 rebounds. During Big Ten play, Cavey s scoring average was 17.6 per game, while leading the Hawkeyes with 108 field goals. Iowa has made three NCAA tournament appearances in the last four years under head coach Lisa Bluder. Iowa finished the season with a overall record and a 10-6 Big Ten mark. All-Time Series: This is only the second time that these two programs have met on the hardwood. The last meeting was back in January 1979 when the Hawkeyes defeated then Northeast Missouri State by a margin. The Bulldogs went on to have their first of only two 20-win seasons that year, going 20-9 under coach Mary Jo Murray. In that game against the Hawkeyes, played at Pershing Arena. Hall of Famer Carol Jarrard came off the bench and led Truman with 12 points. Jarrard would go on to become the Bulldogs all-time leading scorer with

2 Truman Women s Basketball Game Notes, Page 2 Head Coach John Sloop John Sloop is the eighth coach in the 32-year history of the Truman Women s Basketball team. He was named head coach in July of 2000 after serving the five previous seasons as Truman Men s Basketball assistant coach. Under Sloop, the Bulldogs have made two apperarances in the MIAA post-season tournament, falling to Missouri Western in the first round in 2002 and dropping a first round game to Washburn in In 1999, while the men s assistant, Sloop help guide the team to the NCAA Division II Final Four after winning both the MIAA Post-Season tournament and the NCAA South-Central Region tournament. After Sloop graduated from Maryville Univ. (Mo.) in 1991, he served under Charlie Spoonhour for one season at Southwest Missouri State before moving to Saint Louis University with Spoonhour for the next two seasons. He was an assistant coach at Southwest Missouri State during the season for Mark Bernsen. While at Division I SMSU, Sloop assisted in every aspect of the program, including recruiting, scouting and on-the floor coaching. Sloop was also an assistant coach at Lafayette High School in St. Louis, where he also directed summer basketball camps for boys and girls. In 1992, he served as head coach of the Springfield Kings, a 16- and under AAU team. Cindy Haugejorde led all scorers in the game with 15 points for Iowa. Head Coaches: John Sloop is in his fifth season on the bench for the Bulldogs, he has a career coaching record. He was an assistant coach under Jack Schrader on Truman men s basketball team prior to being named the eighth coach in school history. Lisa Bluder is in her fourth season at Iowa with a record for the Hawkeyes. She has career coaching record of including a mark at her previous position at Drake (Iowa) Bulldog Preview With an optimistic attitude and a strong set of leaders, the Bulldogs are looking to have a great season. The expectation for this season is to show up every day and work hard, give everything we ve got, said women s head coach John Sloop. The goal is to win as many games as possible and to be the best basketball team that we can be. Sloop returns for his fifth year on the bench for the Bulldogs. He has a overall record of for a.392 win percentage. The Bulldogs return seven letterwinners and four starters from last season s squad. Truman finished the season with a overall record. The team has been working hard throughout the off season to improve their individual games. There are several new, young guards who will bring fresh blood to the Bulldog basketball team. However, Sloop states the biggest thing is for the Bulldogs to get healthy. We ve got a couple of returning seniors coming off of surgeries. If they can get healthy and we can stay healthy as a team, that would be a big help to us. Kelli Floyd has played in every game the past three seasons and has started every game the last two years. Floyd had a season high ( ) points against Southwest Baptist and has been working hard to improve her game, specifically from a shooting standpoint. She s a terrific leader, her leadership and ball handling is going to be important for us as a basketball team, stated Sloop. Coming off of surgeries are Sarah Sommer and Annie Westhoff, a powerful duo who can play inside and outside. Sommer was the floor general last season, she started every game and led the team in many areas including points, scoring average, blocks, and free throws. Sommer was named to the first-team all-miaa squad last season. After a season ending injury, Annie Westhoff is back and looking for action. While it was terrible to see her go down last year, having her back with Sommer could be a lot of fun, said Sloop. Jamie Huffman started all but five games last season and led the team in field goal percentage. She has the potential to be an all-conference player in this league, I m excited that she has one more opportunity to do it. Junior Ali Long will share some point guard duties with Floyd. Long averaged 23.6 minutes a game last season, while hitting.750 from the free-throw line. There are three sophomores returning to the team. Noelle Peterson played in 15 of the 27

She provides depth and athleticism. Her game continues to improve. Natalie Schupbach played in 25 games last season, earning three starts. She is really intriguing, she s an athletic kid, the quicker she can adjust, the more opportunity she will have to compete for playing time and I d really like to see her in the mix. Megan Patti played in 26 of the 27 games last season, scoring in double figures three times. She seems to be quicker and stronger, it looks like her ball handling has improved, Sloop added. In the middle of the conference season last year, she gave us some valuable minutes off of the bench, she s one of those in the guard rotation who will be competing for increased playing time. Sloop is looking for big things to come from the newest members of the team. I expect them to show up, play hard every day, and contribute. The quicker they get adjusted and acclimated will give us an opportunity to improve overall as a basketball team. Freshman Katie Fowler joins the team this year. She s an extremely good ball handler, with her size and athleticism she has the versatility to play three, possibly four positions, stated Sloop. Twins Candace and Carmen McGee will help out at guard. Sloop noted Candy can shoot the ball from the perimeter, that has been one of our weaknesses over the past few years. Carmen is a slasher, she has taken the bigger defensive responsibilities, she s versatile. Both of the girls are quick, hard working, and aggressive. Callie Sears is probably the strongest kid we ve got in the program, she s got the versatility to play two or three different positions, Sloop said. Truman is looking forward to testing themselves throughout the nonconference schedule and an alwaystough conference slate. The Bulldogs will open up the season with an exhibition game at the University of Iowa on Nov. 11th. The home opener will be four days later on Nov. 15th against Harris-Stowe (Mo.). Truman will head again to the Quincy University (Ill.) Tip-Off classic where they could meet up with the Hawks who went to the NCAA Elite Eight last season. Following the classic, the Bulldogs will play four of their last six nonconference games in Pershing. They will face Quincy again on Dec. 2, and play NCAA national runner-up, Drury (Mo.) to end a tough non-conference season. Conference play will be as brutal as ever, said Sloop. That s part of the reason people come here to play. The MIAA has had a great reputation for women s basketball and this season is no different. The conference powerhouses of Emporia (Kan.), Missouri Western and Washburn (Kan.) were joined by last season s tournament champion runner up, Northwest Missouri State in the NCAA regional tournament last season. Truman will play a balanced conference schedule starting with a road trip to Missouri Southern and Pittsburg St. (Kan.) on Dec. 29 & Jan. 2. The conference season winds down with a home game against Pittsburg St. on Feb. 26th. The Bulldogs improved a game in the overall win column from a year ago but the disparity within conference play left the team with a 3-15 MIAA mark. Truman played a pair of Elite Eight teams in the non-conference schedule, dropping the season opener to Quincy, Ill by a score. The Bulldogs were also defeated by National runner-up Drury, MO by only six points in Pershing Arena In the other six non-conference games, the team went a perfect 6-0. The Bulldogs first win in the campaign was a tough road victory at Lincoln (Mo.) 58-50, with senior Anne Westhoff leading the team with 14 points. That game would be Westhoff s last full one on the season as in the home opener, a win over William Penn, Westhoff suffered a season ending injury in the closing seconds. With Westhoff out, junior Sarah Sommer carried the offensive load, earning first-team all-miaa honors along the way. Sommer averaged 16.1 points per game which was the third best average in the conference. Sommer was also among the conference leaders in rebounding (8th), field goal percentage (4th), free throw percentage (8th) and blocked shots (3rd). Sommer had a team high 35 points in a double overtime loss to eventual MIAA regular season champions and tournament champions, Washburn (Kan.) on Feb. 14th in Kirksville. She also recorded four double-doubles during the season. Seniors Adri Tromp and Emily Turnbell added sparks of offensive throughout the season. Tromp was sixth in the conference in rebounding, averaging seven a game, including a season-high 15 in a win over Missouri-Rolla. Turnbell led the team in threepoint percentage. She hit 37 of 88 for a.420 mark. She started the last nine games of the season, including hitting three of six behind the arc against Emporia State (Kan.). Freshman Emily Markovich was the leading scorer among the newcomers. Markovich averaged 6.8 points per game. The Bulldogs swept the season series with Missouri-Rolla, winning a thrilling overtime game in Rolla and at home The other Truman win in conference was a victory over Missouri Southern in Joplin. Sommer and junior Jamie Huffman each had 14 points to lead Truman. The three-pointer was the achilles heel for the Bulldogs in Opponents shot.395 from behind the arc against Truman, which was the highest in the league. The Bulldogs made only.306 from three which was ninth in the conference. Offensive rebounds was a strong suit for the team. Truman ranked fourth in the conference, just three tenths of an offensive rebound behind the conference leader, Northwest Missouri.
