Following his arrival at Rocky Top, Patrick has become one of the nation s top coaches and helped the Lady Vols attain levels of success never before reached in Knoxville, as evidenced by NCAA Tournament berths in six of the last seven years, including a run to the Final Four in His nine-year stretch of winning seasons from marks the longest-such run in program history, topping the previous high of seven, set from The Big Orange has won 20 or more matches in seven of the last nine campaigns. Prior to Patrick s arrival at UT in 1997, the Lady Vols last recorded a 20-win season in Patrick joined the UT program in July of 1997 after spending the previous three seasons as an assistant coach with national powerhouse Stanford. From 1994 to 1996, he helped lead the Cardinal to a combined 92-6 record and two NCAA championships, including titlegame victories over UCLA and Hawaii in 1994 and 1996, respectively. Rob Patrick Bob Bertucci Julie Hermann A LOOK AT TENNESSEE S NEW COACHES ALAN EDWARDS /// ASSISTANT COACH The Tennessee volleyball program and head coach Rob Patrick announced the addition of former Iona College head coach Alan Edwards as the team s new assistant coach and recruiting coordinator on July 19. I am very excited about adding Alan to our coaching staff, Patrick said. He brings a wealth of volleyball experience, both as a head coach and assistant coach from a number of Division-I programs, and is someone who I feel will be able to assimilate himself into our team very quickly. Edwards was most recently the head coach at Iona for the past five seasons, where he led the Gaels to a overall record and four appearances in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships. During his time in New Rochelle, Edwards mentored one of the top defensive players in NCAA history in Allison Neiters. One of the top volleyball performers in Iona College and MAAC history, she shattered the Iona and conference career record for digs with 2,682, the fifth highest all-time total in the NCAA. Neiters was named the 2007 and 2008 MAAC Defensive Player of the Year and 2009 MAAC Libero of the Year, as well as the league s Defensive Player of the Week 17 times during her career. She was also a three-time MAAC All-Academic Team and MAAC Honor Roll member, two-time CoSIDA Academic All-District selection and earned Iona s Academic Merit Award for holding a 3.50 or above grade point average. RACHEL COOPER /// ASSISTANT COACH The University of Tennessee and head volleyball coach Rob Patrick announced the hiring of Rachel Cooper as the team s new assistant coach. A former standout player at Mississippi State, Cooper has spent the past three seasons as an assistant coach at East Tennessee State after two years as a graduate assistant with the Buccaneers, where she assisted in recruiting and coordinated team travel and community service. The thing that most impresses me about Rachel is her work ethic, Patrick said. I ve gotten to know her in recent years when she has come to work our camps and I am very excited that we have been able to add her to our coaching staff. She has experience in recruiting and understands the day-to-day responsibilities involved with running a high-level volleyball program. Rachel was also an outstanding player in the SEC and knows exactly what it takes to be successful at the highest level in our conference. Her personality is very engaging and inviting, and I expect that our players will be able to easily relate to her. A Roscoe, Ill., native, Cooper was a four-year letter winner and starting outside hitter for the Mississippi State Bulldogs. A two-year captain and team Most Valuable Player, Cooper was also the first Bulldog athlete ever named SEC Player of the Week. She finished her career third alltime in kills with 1,405.

8 senior KELSEY MAHONEY 5-10 /// Setter Fort Worth, Texas (Keller-Central H.S.) INTERVIEW BY JOHN PAINTER Q: What made you choose Tennessee? A: I just liked the program, the school and all the tradition. I liked that they had separate athletics departments and just the spirit behind Tennessee. Q: What s the coolest thing about being a UT student-athlete? A: Eating in Gibbs Hall. Lunch is awesome because they always have great food. You can t make those same meals for yourself all the time so it s nice to have somebody else making you lunch. And you see everybody who s a part of Tennessee athletics, including coaches like Pat Summitt. Q: What was your biggest adjustment to the college game? A: Probably just the speed of the game and the high level all the time. It never fluctuates you have to be on your game every day. Q: What s a Fort Worth secret people in Tennessee don t know about? A: We have really good Mexican food; that s what I miss about it. I miss the Texas style and feel of it. I miss the stockyards. And I love Texas country music so much better than mainstream, but I could be biased. Q: Talk about the changes for this season. A: This year is totally different, especially for any returning player. We have two new people on the coaching staff, a new director of operations, all new managers so it s different. The energy in the gym is great. We re not really missing a beat, so I m excited for it. It s going to be a new experience. Q: What are you expecting for the team this season? A: We have really high expectations for ourselves and we want to make a good run into the tournament, make it to the final four, win SEC and all that. We lost some really good players but we also have gained good talent as well. Q: Do you have any personal goals? A: I m working my way from a back injury to be able to practice all the time and being able to go full-speed. I m competing for a starting spot and pushing my teammates to be better. I ve not been injured before, so now I ve got to learn to fight back with my body. It s a new experience, but the training staff has been helping me a lot and doing a great job. 9 JUNIOR JASMINE BROWN 5-8 /// Defensive Specialist & Setter Chattanooga, Tenn. (Girls Preparatory School) INTERVIEW BY MEGAN SPEDDEN Q: Being from Chattanooga, did you always know you wanted to come to Tennessee? A: No. Actually I didn t really want to come here because everyone at my school came here. I went to [Girls Preparatory School] and I was going to run track somewhere else, but then I talked to one of the coaches really late my senior year. Then I got here and I love it! I really like it here. Q: What events did you run in track? A: 300 hurdles, triple jump, pentathlon, and long jump. Q: Do you miss track at all? A: I prefer volleyball, but I miss the triple jump. Q: What has been your favorite UT memory so far in your career? A: I think it was my freshman year when we beat Kentucky at home. We were down and Kiley Marshall served us like six points in a row and we won. Q: What do you plan to do after college? A: [I m studying] social work with a minor in business. I kind of want to ministry work -- like inner-city ministry so I figured I would start with social work. I don t really want to be in the government part of it, but hopefully I can do ministry. Q: What are your aspirations on the court? A: Of course my goal in my position is to be the libero. Every day in practice I am just trying to work on getting better with my passing. This year I just want to be a more consistent passer. Q: How did you choose your number? A: It s not Kobe Bryant that s not why I have 24. It was really just the first number that came into my head. It doesn t mean anything to me. Well, now it does, but before it didn t. Q: Do you have any nicknames? A: I have Jazzy, Jazz, Jazzy-Face, J.B., J-Bizzle, Downtown Jasmine Brown the list goes on. Q: What s your favorite quote from Coach? A: Un-believable. He says it a lot no matter what. Q: Are you looking forward to any particular contest or opponent this year? A: I am looking forward to beating Florida and LSU whooping them and winning the SEC Championship. And I m looking forward to being a national champion. 10 JUNIOR LESLIE CIKRA 6-4 /// Middle Blocker & Outside Hitter Chagrin Falls, Ohio (Chagrin Falls H.S.) INTERVIEW BY BRIAN RICE Q: Favorite spot on campus? A: My bed. If I m not playing, in class or eating, I m probably sleeping. Q: Funniest Teammate? A: Without question, Kelsey Robinson. Q: How did you pick your number? A: In high school I looked up to a girl who wore No. 11, so when she graduated, I took it over and it s just stuck since then. Q: Athlete you admire? A: Keri Walsh, she s someone I ve always looked up to in volleyball. Q: How d you pick No. 11? A: I was No. 7 all through high school and No. 17. When I was a freshman in high school, I looked up to this girl who was a middle hitter. She was a senior and I was a freshman so when she graduated I took over the number and it has just stuck since then. Q: Expectations for the season: A: I have really high expectations for this season. I came here to wina national championship and do something that no team has done before here. We re here to get a ring. Q: Tell us a little about Coach Patrick: A: He s been really awesome to have. He s brought me a long way. He has a great attention to detail and has really honed in my game on things I ve needed to focus on since I ve gotten here. Q: What s it like being a student-athlete at Tennessee? A: It s indescribable. I m from Ohio and I was like, Tennessee, what s that? I got on the football field. The pride of the school and everything that comes with it, it s hard to describe. It s really awesome. Every time I put this uniform on my chest, I get chills every time. It s something I ll have with me forever. 11 JUNIOR DEEDEE HARRISON 6-4 /// Middle Blocker Nashville, Tenn. (Hillsboro H.S.) INTERVIEW BY BRIAN RICE Q: Favorite memory at Tennessee? A: Beating Florida, that was amazing because they came in thinking they were going to win. It made us feel better about ourselves and we went on a winning streak after that. Q: Favorite memory in sports overall? A: My favorite memory would have to be when my high school basketball team beat our rival, Smyrna. It was the best game of my life. I can t even explain how I felt at the end of that game. We always played them, and they always beat us to get to state. We finally beat them. We finally got past them. It was amazing. Me and my sister bonded the most at that game. It was amazing. Q: Favorite spot on campus? A: Steps (Ampitheater) in Humanities Plaza. I can take naps there, it s a great place to sit and relax between classes between classes or before practice. Q: Funniest teammate? A: Kelsey Robinson. She s funny in a lot of different ways. The things she does are just funny. She has just an amazing personality; anyone around her would just love her. Q: Teammate most likely to be president? A: Jasmine Brown. She s a very organized plan, plan, plan kind of person. Q: How did you pick your number? A: I picked number eight because I am the eighth of 12 kids in my family. It represents me and it s personal, so I was lucky number eight had graduated when I came in. Q: Athlete you admire: A: My father. He taught us the ways and things he did when he was playing in college and professionally. I admire him and all the things he taught me and the example he showed of how you can be successful in sports and still be an amazing person to other people. Q: Something no one knows about you? A: I m afraid of the dark. I still have a nightlight at 21 years old. Q: Talk about your sports background: A: It teaches you to live up to a higher expectation and to expect more of yourself. That s why my brother (David, who played 4 seasons in the NBA) has made it so far. He wanted to do things like quit and play football or just hang out and my dad wouldn t let him. Seeing the conversations between those two was like my turning point. I realized I have to make it here; I have to make it to college and do something more with myself because I know my father isn t going to let me down. It kind of puts a fear in the back of your mind, but it makes you work hard no matter what you re doing, especially academics. Q: What s it like having your sister (Isabelle) at UT on the Lady Vol basketball team? A: I love having her here. She s my little sister. I m always going to love her and love having her around. If you know her, she s a funny and loving person. The best advice I gave her was to not let the freshman experience overwhelm you. She s the kind of person that would freak out because it all comes at you at once. So I told her not to let it overwhelm her and if you ever need anything, let me know because I can help you out. We had a great moving-in experience. 12 SOPHOMORE ELLEN MULLINS 5-6 /// Libero & Defensive Specialist Nashville, Tenn. (Father Ryan H.S.) INTERVIEW BY JOHN PAINTER Q: Talk about your athletic family. A: My mom played basketball in high school and was a great player. That s probably where we get our athletic talent from. But don t tell my dad; he d probably get mad at me! We played basketball too, but volleyball is just what we ended up with. It s five girls and we all play volleyball, so it s fun. Q: How are your games different in your family? A: I m the shortest one. My little sister plays everywhere; she s a hitter and a setter. Ann and I are both defense, but I ve played probably every position before I got here. But if we had one more person we could make a good team. Q: What made you choose Tennessee? A: It s always been my dream to come. I like it here a lot. It s far enough away from home that I can escape. Plus, it s cool to play for your home-state university. I like that. Q: Did you know any of your teammates before arriving at UT? A: I knew all my freshmen teammates coming in Kylann (Scheidt), Kelsey (Robinson) and Carlie (Sahagian) we had met before. I knew DeeDee Harrison, she s from Nashville too. And I played against Jasmine Brown in high school; we were rivals. Q: What s the coolest thing about UT? A: The atmosphere. There s so much pride in the Orange and White. It s a huge campus and being an athlete does make it fun. You definitely get the hype and the talk and stuff, and it s nice. But we also have to be responsible. Q: What are the adjustments to the college game? A: The level is definitely higher. You have to get used to the speed of the game that was probably the most difficult thing. Meshing with your team was another big thing at the beginning. Once I got comfortable, it was easier for me to excel, step out of the box and really use my talent on the court. Q: Was there a moment last season when you felt you were making those adjustments? A: It was gradual in the beginning. I just locked in and focused, and kept going in early for practice and working really hard to get on the court. Q: Do you have any role models? A: I love to follow my sister Ann. She played here and that s a neat thing with the ties. She s taught me pretty much all I know and coached me on club teams in high school. She s my role model and it s still fun to see her play. Q: Did you go anywhere fun this summer? A: Yeah, I went to the beach with my family, to Perdido Key in Florida, around Pensacola. And then we were here training. We were back here in June training and getting ready for our season this year. Q: What are you expecting for the team this season? A: We re expecting to go all the way. We all want to win a national championship and an SEC championship. It hasn t happened since and it s time to bring the banners and the rings back to the volleyball world. I m excited. 13 Sophomore KELSEY ROBINSON 6-2 /// Outside Hitter Bartlett, Ill. (Wheaton-St. Francis H.S.) INTERVIEW BY JOSH PATE Q: Your major is broadcast journalism. If you were interviewing yourself, what is the first question you would ask? A: That s hard. I would probably say, What brought you to Tennessee? I m from Chicago and grew up with the Big Ten. Most people ask why I would pick the SEC because it s such a different lifestyle than where I m from. So that would be the first question. Q: So... What brought you to Tennessee? A: I really fell in love with the family atmosphere here. Everyone is really into the sports, no matter what you play volleyball, soccer, football. It s fan-based, and everybody loves it. You go all over the state and people see your Tennessee gear and are so excited, saying, Oh my gosh, you play for Tennessee! The support here is great. Q: Is the support you receive as a studentathlete at Tennessee really that much different from where you grew up? A: In Chicago, the Bears, Blackhawks and Bulls the professional sports are really big. The University of Illinois is there, but it s different. Q: Growing up in the Chicago suburbs, when you think of home, what comes to mind? A: Home for me wasn t really in Bartlett (Ill.) because I went to high school in Wheaton, played volleyball in Naperville, and then played basketball in the city. So growing up I was all over the place. But whenever I go home, it s great. I love the city. I love going to big games, wintertime at the park, shopping, stuff like that. As much as I hate the cold, I love going home. My favorite part of the city is Belmont. It s not part of the big area, but it s smaller and has great shopping that nobody knows about. Q: You have mentioned you really like photography. Are you able to enjoy it as much while juggling school and volleyball? A: I haven t had that much time to do it, but I like the arts and photography. I m happy when I get the chance to do it. I do it for fun. I do the friends photos, but I really like the arts and nature photos. I find it really peaceful. Q: What has been the most emotional moment good or bad on the volleyball court? A: My most emotional moment was when my high school team lost to another team in the state finals. It was my senior year so obviously that was one of the most crushing defeats. But losing that game and the feeling that I had made me never want to lose again. That s what brought me here: pressing myself harder and harder. I never want to feel that again. Although defeat is bad, and everybody says, Don t lose, sometimes failure can teach you things. Q: What did you learn in your first year of college that you will never forget? A: I think every year you can take something, whether it s being a freshman in college or being a senior in high school. You take something with you every year. The biggest thing I took last year is you have to work hard every single moment. There is no play where you can take off. That gave me a ton of determination to go hard in the spring and work hard in the summer to develop myself as a player even more than I already have. So last year I learned that not one play can be taken off. You have to work hard every single play. 14 SOPHOMORE CARLY SAHAGIAN 6-2 /// Outside Hitter Bartlett, Ill. (Bartlett H.S.) INTERVIEW BY MEGAN SPEDDEN Q: What are you studying? A: I m majoring in hotel and tourism management I just chose my major last semester. I only took one class in it but I really liked it. I would like to plan events, big events. I might like to be a wedding planner or even run a hotel one day. Q: What is your greatest memory on the court: A: Last year I played in about eight games when Kelsey Robinson was hurt, so getting to play after being on the bench for a while was good. I want to be on the court obviously more than I was last year, but it takes a lot to get there. Q: How did you pick your number? A: I picked this number because when I played basketball when I was little I was 35 and my dad has been 35 ever since he was younger playing softball. He said he was going to stop playing when he was 35, but he s 50 and he s still playing. I wanted to be like him when I was little so I just picked it. Q: Do you have a nickname? A: I don t know if you ve ever seen the movie Fired Up but there is a girl named Carly on there and the guy calls his girlfriend Carly Fries, Carlito s Way and Carly and the Chocolate Factory. They all call me that. Q: What is your favorite quote from Coach? A: I remember in the beginning of the summer he said You can either finger paint or paint like Picasso. He just meant that you can go big or go home pretty much. Put in the work now and it will pay off later. Q: What is your favorite music to listen to? A: I actually love everything but I hated country music before I came to the south. I did go to the CMAs in Nashville this summer and now I m obsessed with country. Q: Were you able to see that happen in your freshman season with hard work paying off? A: From the club I played at, we were always in the gym all the time. I just knew that if you wanted to come close to winning or getting a championship, you have to sacrifice if you want it. Q: What s an interesting fact that no one would know about you? A: I like to fish with my dad. I caught this big sturgeon that almost looked like an alligator just the way it felt. It was big. We didn t have a camera. It was a disposable and it got wet so we couldn t take a picture. [I caught the fish] when I was 13. 15 SOPHOMORE KYLANN SCHEIDT 6-0 /// Setter Knoxville, Tenn. (Farragut H.S.) INTERVIEW /// MATT MAGILL Q: How was your summer? A: It was great. I went to Nebraska to visit my family in May, and then I came back and took classes and worked out. Not really much. Q: What family did you have in Nebraska? A: My grandparents and my aunts and uncles. I m originally from Nebraska. Q: But you re from Knoxville, right? A: I ll say I m from Knoxville. I lived in Nebraska until my sophomore year in high school. Q: What made you move to Knoxville? A: My dad got a job with First Tennessee Bank. Q: Being from Knoxville, was UT always your first choice? A: I never really thought about it, I guess. I didn t know when I moved here that I wanted to go to UT or anything. It was just a great opportunity for me. My family can come watch every match. It s nice to be close to home. That was definitely one of the decision points on why I chose Tennessee. Q: Did you know you were Coach Patrick s first player from Knoxville? A: Yeah, someone told me that. I found that out. It s cool because volleyball is definitely growing in this area especially since I got here from Nebraska. Coming from Nebraska, it s at a whole different level out there. More people play volleyball out there. It s nice to see a lot of younger kids playing volleyball now in Knoxville. It feels good to be the first from Knoxville. Q: Was volleyball more competitive in Nebraska? A: Yeah, it is. It started when I was in fourth grade. I know some people may start younger, but it s just at a higher level in Nebraska, I guess. Q: Did you play any other sports during high school? A: I played basketball until my junior year. The only reason I didn t play my senior season was because I graduated early to come here. Q: Were you any good? A: Yeah, I was. I played basketball a lot longer than volleyball. I had played since I could walk. My dad and uncle played basketball, too. Q: Could you have gone to play basketball somewhere? A: Probably, but not Division-1. Maybe a smaller school. I never did any AAU or club basketball or anything. I didn t get as much exposure as I did in volleyball. Q: If Coach Summit needed you, could you be ready to suit up and play? A: I don t know (laughs.) I mean I still have my shot down, but that s a whole other level. It would be fun just to sit on the bench. Q: Do you have any other off-the-court interests? A: I love doing video production stuff. That s what I m going to major in: visual communications. I love working with computers and stuff, which is kind of nerdy, but I enjoy it. I like putting stuff together and making it with sounds and music and stuff. I like to shop and go out on the lake. I don t really like to tube because it scares me, so I stay on the boat. 16 FRESHMAN TIFFANY BAKER 6-4 /// Outside Hitter & Middle Blocker Carrolton, Texas (Hebron H.S.) FRESHMAN NIKKI BRICE 5-8 /// Defensive Specialist Fullerton, Calif. (Troy H.S.) INTERVIEW BY JOSH PATE Q: When I say the word expectation, what comes to mind for you as a freshman? A: Not too much. Even Rob told me not to come in here carrying the weight of the world on my shoulders. He said to just come in here, learn the system, get to passing better, and develop what I need to work on like passing and the rotation outside. Q: Was there an aha moment when you realized that volleyball was something you wanted to continue in your life? A: Oh yeah, there definitely was. My sophomore year, I had to choose between basketball and volleyball. Basketball was my thing. I had played since I was in fourth grade. So I had to choose, and I chose volleyball. I ve been with it since then and I want to become the best player that I can. Q: What is it about volleyball that makes your choice satisfying? A: I think it s the ultimate team sport. Without your teammates, you can t accomplish anything. You have to rely on every single person on the team. That was a huge thing for me. In basketball, one person can take control of the game. Q: On a typical game day, do you have a routine or preparation before walking onto the court? A: At first, it s me getting focused. I want to be by myself. But then, right before the game starts, I ll get into music and get hyped up. It really solves the jitters. Q: Some players are superstitious in their sport. Have you ever been superstitious? A: No, not really. My high school coach was like that. She would tell me, Don t wear that jersey; you played bad in it last time. I wouldn t care. I m not really superstitious about anything. Q: What did you do over the summer between high school and your freshman year? A: I graduated high school early, so I had six months to prepare for coming here. I did the workout they sent me twice. I finished the workout and conditioning, and I was playing club volleyball. I also had a job. So basically, that was my life: conditioning, volleyball, job. It was nice though because I got focused and ready to come here. Q: You worked all summer. So on your perfect vacation, you re in a plane and it lands. You step off. Where are you at? A: Anywhere that s tropical or exotic. I ve never been to Hawaii, so something like that. Maybe Miami. I ve been to Miami before, though. Maybe Puerto Rico. Somewhere with exotic, tropical trees. INTERVIEW BY MATT MAGILL Q: How was your summer? A: It went pretty well. I came early with the rest of the older team to train with them instead of staying home. Q: How did training with the team go? A: Training was really good. We trained with Holly everyday. There was a lot of weightlifting probably the heaviest we ll lift all year. We did open gyms just with our own team at least three times a week. It was fun, but we got a lot better together. Q: How did you feel like you improved during training? A: I got a lot stronger, and I m in better shape. My serve got better, especially my consistency. I feel like I got a lot better volleyball-wise. Q: Why did you choose UT? A: I chose UT because I wanted to be part of a program that I thought we could make winners. We haven t won a championship yet, but I m confident that we can. Also because I like to try new things, so I knew that I wanted to go to a different part of the country to try it out. I loved the team when I came to visit, and I like the coaches, too. The environment here I like having a big school and everything. Q: Have there been any changes from California to Tennessee? A: The culture is different here. It s the simplest things. People dress differently and talk differently. It s a different way of life I guess. It s good though; I like it here. Q: Have you had to make any adjustments? A: Not really. I haven t really changed at all. I guess I had to adjust to being away from home, but everyone has to adjust to that. I ve had to adjust to being so far away from all my friends, too. Q: Have you had any mix-ups in terminology? Has anyone said anything that you thought was odd? A: The main differences are: people say car wreck. I m just like, it s a car crash. You didn t get in a wreck. And the other is I say highway and people here say interstate. Oh, and people here say ya ll. Q: Does ya ll annoy you? A: A little bit. But I see myself changing a little. I will say you all now. I know I m getting there but I still refuse to say ya ll.

17 FRESHMAN SHAELYN KOLOSKY 6-3 /// Middle Blocker Wheaton, Ill. (Wheaton Warrenville South H.S.) FRESHMAN MARY POLLMILLER 5-11 /// Setter Littleton, Colo. (Chatfield H.S.) INTERVIEW BY MATT MAGILL Q: How was your summer? Did you do anything special? A: It was good. I took some summer classes and my club season finish out a couple of weeks before school started. Q: How did your club team do? A: We actually ended up winning nationals. Q: Are there any other college players on the team? A: A couple of my teammates play or will play. One of my teammates is going to Mississippi State and one is going to Ole Miss. Those are the two SEC ones. Pretty much everyone is going to different schools, but those are the two that are going to the SEC other than me. Q: Why did you come to UT? A: I really liked the atmosphere of the school. It s a cool environment and I really love everyone on the team. I like the coaching staff and the direction the program is headed. Q: What can you expect from the team this year? A: Everything we work for right now is trying to get to the Final Four. That s our goal right now, and I definitely think we can make it there. That would be really cool. Q: What does it take to make a Final Four? A: Our team chemistry is really good, and I think that will help us a lot. Fundamentally, I know I ll have to change a little bit of my skills just because it s different in high school than college. We re on the right track right now. Q: What off-the-court interests do you have? A: I really like just hanging out with my friends. We usually just go to movies. I really like photography. I like to watch baseball, too. INTERVIEW BY MEGAN SPEDDEN Q: What brought you all the way to Tennessee from Denver, Colorado? A: I loved the team and the coaches. And I loved the school all together. Q: How did you choose your number? A: I was usually number nine but then nine was taken so I just switched randomly. It s a new number for me. Q: How has the adjustment to college been so far? A: I have been here since June 30 and it has been good. Everybody has been welcoming and it has been easy. Q: Do you know what you want to study yet? A: I am going to go into dentistry, so I think biology. Q: What aspirations do you have for yourself on the court? A: A lot we want to go far, obviously. Q: Who is the biggest comedian or jokester on your team? A: Probably Kelsey Robinson -- she is just always joking around and always has that smile on her face. Q: What s a random fact that most people don t know about you? A: My parents both come from big families and I am really close with all my cousins. My dad s whole side is in Colorado so I see them all the time. A lot of them are coming out for our tournament at the end of August. Q: What is your favorite quote from Coach? A: Dominate the net he always says. Q: Do you have a favorite baseball team? A: Chicago Cubs.

18 FRESHMAN STEPHANIE STOLL 6-2 /// Middle Blocker Bellevue, Wash. (Washington) FRESHMAN MERCEDES VAUGHN 6-0 /// Middle Blocker Wilmington, Del. (Academy Park) INTERVIEW BY MATT MAGILL Q: How was your summer? A: It was good, but it was really short though. Summer at University of Washington goes really late, so I only had two and a half weeks. Q: Just two and a half weeks? What did you do with that little time? A: I stayed with my family mainly. I didn t really do much. Q: You re from Washington. Washington to Knoxville is a long trip. How much of your summer was spent travelling? A: I looked up online on maps and it takes a day and 17 hours if you drove. But we flew. Q: That s a long drive. A: We didn t drive, but that would take forever. Q: If you didn t fly, you would spend your entire vacation travelling. A: Luckily, we flew, but I did spend a lot of time packing and getting ready to pack. (laughs) And I brought way too much. I already know that. Q: Why did you pick UT being from Washington? A: It was mainly recruiting stuff. When I got my release, they recruited me. When I came on my visit, I liked it a lot, so I decided to come here. Q: What specifically was attractive about UT? A: I really liked the team and Coach Patrick s coaching style. It s like a family atmosphere here. There was a lot of meshing with all the girls. I just liked everything about it. The campus is really pretty and the facilities are great. Q: Where exactly are you from in Washington? A: I m from like twenty minutes east of Seattle. Q: Is there anything unique about your hometown? A: We have a nice shopping mall (laughs). We re less than an hour away from some good skiing mountains and just a few hours away from Canada. There s a lot of hiking and big mountains around. Q: Do you ever just take a day trip to Canada? A: Yeah, we ll go up there for a weekend and hike and ride horses. I ve gone skiing a few times up there. Q: What are some of your other off-the-court interests? A: I like to go hiking with my parents INTERVIEW BY JOHN PAINTER Q: What made you choose Tennessee? A: This process started literally in the middle of July. They saw me play this summer at a tournament in Orlando, Fla. I was playing club volleyball and planning to go to a Division III school, and I got this offer and jumped on it. Q: Talk about that whirlwind change to your college plans. A: I really still can t even believe I ve already graduated from high school. I m like, I m in college now? It seems like I was just a freshman in high school, and I m a freshman in college. It s a big change for me. Q: What was your family s reaction to you going away to college? A: My mom is very excited, probably happier than me because I got a scholarship. Q: Did you play any other sports in high school? A: Basketball and track, but volleyball always was my favorite. Q: What s a Philadelphia secret people in Tennessee don t know about? A: It s a very busy place; there s always something to do. Obviously, good cheesesteaks that s what s important about Philly. There s a cheesesteak place right around the corner from my house called Leo s, and that s my spot. Q: Have there been any early surprises about UT? A: The campus isn t as big as I thought it would be, but that s good. People are really nice here. Q: What are the strengths to your game? A: I can jump. All I have is my vertical. I m athletic, and that s my strength. Q: What are your initial impressions of the team? A: I didn t know any of the players before I got here, but so far it s been going OK for me. I thought it would be completely over my head, but it s been OK for me so far. Q: What are you planning to study? A: Nursing.
