THE COACHES RICK CHAMBERLIN HEAD COACH 1ST SEASON/DAYTON 80 Flyer Linebacker Four-year letterwinner from Two-time Chief Toscani Hitter Award winner 1978 Kodak AFCA All-American Co-captain on UD s first NCAA playoff team as a senior Coached on two NCAA Division III national championship teams Two NCAA FCS Mid-Major national championship teams Ten NCAA Division III playoff teams Nine PFL championship teams Named 23rd head football coach in UD history on January 23, 2008 The University of Dayton introduced Flyer football great Rick Chamberlin as its new head football coach on January 23, 2008 in a press conference held at the University of Dayton Arena. Chamberlin, a 1980 UD graduate and a member of the University s Athletic Hall of Fame, succeeds Mike Kelly, who announced one day earlier that he was stepping down. Rick Chamberlin is the clear choice to succeed Mike Kelly as head football coach of the Dayton Flyers, Dayton Vice-President and Director of Athletics Ted Kissell said. You can expect him to continue the values and identity of the program, but you will learn that Rick is his very much his own man. Coach Chamberlin has the right experience and a passion for UD that is unmatched. Rick Chamberlin exhibits the energy, confidence and sense of purpose of a strong leader. Our football program is in good hands. Chamberlin is the 23rd head football coach since the program began in He is the first of the 11 modern era coaches to have lettered for the Flyers, and the second to be a graduate of the University of Dayton (Pete Ankney was the first in 1963 and 1964). 24
THE COACHES It s an honor to be selected the University of Dayton head football coach, Chamberlin said. I m excited about the opportunity and the challenge of keeping this program at the high level of respect it has achieved. The foundation of this program is strong. So many new coaches take over programs that are in poor shape or need a new identity. Our program is not like those, and I m looking to forward building on what already exists. Chamberlin, 51, just completed his 28th season on the Flyer coaching staff. First as linebackers coach and then as defensive coordinator, Chamberlin helped mold the Dayton D s reputation for its preparation and execution as a unit. Under Chamberlin s guidance, the Flyers have led the Pioneer Football League in scoring defense the last seven seasons, includingfinishing second in NCAA Division I-AA (9.8) in 2002, third (14.1) in 2005 and fourth in FCS in 2007 (15.6). In 2004, Dayton led NCAA Division I-AA football in total defense (263.10). One of the hallmarks of the Dayton defense in the last four decades has been great play at Flyer linebacker. Not only has Chamberlin nurtured that as a coach, but he was one of the players who started that tradition in the late 1970 s. A four-year letterwinner from for the Flyers, Chamberlin was named to the Football Coaches Association Small College All-America team. He was the third Dayton player to be named a First Team All-American, and was the first defensive player. A native of Springfield, Ohio, and a 1975 graduate of Springfield North High School, Chamberlin was a three-time all-city selection and Springfield Player of the Year as a senior. In four years at Dayton, he was credited with 385 tackles and led the team as a junior (115) and senior (121). He was the first two-time winner of the Chief Toscani Hitter Award and a member of UD s first NCAA Division III Playoff team in He was inducted into the University of Dayton Athletic Hall of Fame in He is the real story, said Chamberlin s coach, Mike Kelly. Here s a guy who went to college to play football, became a graduate assistant, an assistant coach, then a very successful defensive coordinator and now a head coach - all at the same institution. He understands the tradition of the Dayton football program, and the culture. Rick is a player s coach. They love to play for him. Chamberlin is a 1980 graduate from UD with a degree in health and physical education. He earned his master s degree in counselor education at UD in Rick and his wife Jayne live in Kettering. They have two sons, Jason and Tyler, who both graduated from UD. 25

THE COACHES DAve Whilding offensive coordinator 32nd Season / Quarterbacks / Earlham 71 Dave Whilding enters his 32nd season at UD, marking his 28th coaching the quarterbacks and his 26th as offensive coordinator. In the entire time Whilding has been with the Flyers, no Dayton team has been shut out. With Whilding directing the UD attack, three different Dayton quarterbacks led their respective NCAA divisions in passing efficiency in a five-year period in the early 1990 s. In 2007, Whilding s offense re-wrote the record books, setting records in net offense, first downs, passing yardage, completions, and touchdowns passing, to name a few. The re-vamped spread offense completed 95 more passes for 798 more yards. Record-setting quarterback Kevin Hoyng has graduated, with senior captain Rob Florian expected to replace him. Florian enters the 2008 campaign with 90 career passes under his belt. That s a lot compared to what Whilding has had to work with in the past. In the 1990 s, three different quarterbacks took over the starting role with less than 12 career passes to their credit. The results? Steve Keller had 11 career passes when he took control of the Flyer offense in All he did was lead the Flyers to the Division III championship game, become Division III s passing leader and set three career records. In 1995, Brian Kadel, had 12 career passes entering his senior year. He led NCAA Division I-AA in passing efficiency. In 1996, Kevin Johns had 11 passes in his career before starting. He led the Flyers to a perfect 11-0 record, set four records and was named the Football Gazette NCAA Division I-AA Non-Scholarship Offensive Player of the Year. Chris Ochs 9th Season/ Offensive Line/ Capital 93 Now in his ninth season at the University of Dayton, Chris Ochs coaches the Flyer offensive line. Since Ochs assumed that role in the 2000 season, UD s O-Line has opened holes that have allowed Dayton to average 34.0 rushing touchdowns a season, compared to just 8.8 by Flyer foes. Dayton led the PFL in rushing six times between 2000 and 2006, and was ranked in the top five of NCAA I-AA football four times. With the change in the Flyers offensive attack to pass-first spread offense, those numbers will change. But what remains the same for Ochs and his line are the execution and cohesiveness that every great offense needs. In 2007, UD quarterbacks threw 433 passes, while being sacked just 20 times. That s just one sack for every 22 pass attempts. By contrast, Dayton opponents were sacked once every eight times. Ochs came to UD from Defiance College (OH), where he had been an assistant coach since At Defiance, he served as both offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. Prior to that he was an assistant at Southern Illinois University where he coached the offensive line while getting his masters in educational administration and higher education. And in 2004, Brandon Staley took over without ever throwing a varsity pass, and he rolled to the fourth-best (now seventh-best) single-season total offense number (1,961 yards) in UD history. Staley s successor, Kevin Hoyng, set the school total offense record (2,547 yards) in his first season as a starter in 2005, and had the second-best mark (2,471) in nine games in 2006, and then blew his previous marks out of the water with 3,957 yards in One quarterback developing so fast? A fluke, perhaps. A couple? A trend. Five? A tradition, and it s a tradition nurtured under Whilding s guidance. Further proof is the fact that the top eight Flyer signal callers in career passing efficiency and the seven of the top eight in total offense are Whilding QB s. Hailing from Xenia, Ohio, Whilding earned his bachelor s degree in Physical Education from Earlham College in He received his Master s from UD in While at Earlham, Whilding played quarterback under Rick Carter, who later came to Dayton to coach. As a senior, Whilding was co-captain and MVP. After graduation, Whilding spent six seasons coaching at Tecumseh High School before joining Carter s staff at UD in Dave and his wife Evie live in Jamestown. Their daughter Amy graduated from UD in He was a three-year letterman at Capital University, where he started at quarterback, and was the team captain his senior year. He holds five career offensive records and graduated in 1993 with a business management degree. He also was a two-year captain of the baseball team. Chris and his wife Karen (a UD graduate) live in Beavercreek with their five-year-old twins, Shane and Sarah. 27
28 THE COACHES landon fox 3rd Season / Secondary / Defiance 00 Landon Fox returns to UD and will coach the Flyer secondary under first-year head coach Rick Chamberlin. Fox served as a graduate assistant coach for the Flyers in 2002 and Dayton was 20-3 in Fox s two seasons working under then-head coach Mike Kelly and then-defensive coordinator Rick Chamberlin. The Flyers won their first of two NCAA Division I-AA Mid-Major national championships while going 11-1 in 2002, and then turned in a 9-2 campaign in Fox comes to UD after three seasons at Wayne State University in Detroit where he was linebacker coach and special teams coordinator under Paul Winters. During that time, Wayne state recorded its firs winning season in 13 years. Fox spent the 2004 campaign as a graduate assistant coach assisting with the secondary at Ball State University on head coach Brady Hoke s staff. Fox s first college coaching experience was as a defensive line graduate assistant coach at Lakeland College in Sheboygan, Wis. A four-year member ( ) of the Defiance College football squad, Fox led the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) in fumble recoveries while earning second team all-league accolades in He was a team captain CRAIG TURNER 10th Season / Defensive Tackles / Special Teams Coordinator / Bluffton 73 Craig Turner is in his tenth year with the Dayton Flyers. He coaches UD s defensive tackles and serves as special teams coordinator. Turner has been teaching and coaching since He was an assistant coach at Trotwood Madison, Alter and Northmont schools in the Dayton area. He was head coach at Brookville High School for seven years, where he led them to six league championships and six playoff berths. He also served as head coach at Arcanum High School. As a high school coach, Turner received CoachT of the Year honors on seven different occasions. Turner graduated from Bluffon College in He received his Master s degree from Wright State University and his computer science certification from UD. He and his wife, Sharon, both teach in the Brookville School District and have five children. ANTHONY DAVIS 9th Season / Running Backs / Union 89 Anthony Davis brings 16 years of football coaching experience under his belt, coaching defensive line, offensive line, secondary, and special teams. Now entering his ninth season with the Flyers, Anthony hopes the success he had as a position coach for the Dayton defense will follow him as he switches sides of the ball and he assumes the responsiblities of UD s running backs coach. His most recent stop before coming to Dayton was Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, where he was the defensive line coach and special teams coach for one season. He played offensive and defensive line for four years at Union College, KY, where he graduated in 1989 with a degree in Business Administration. He received his master s in Education from UD in Anthony resides in Trotwood, and works for the Department of Veterans Affairs in Dayton. and Defiance s defensive player of the year as a senior. After his football career was over, he also played one season of basketball for the Yellow Jackets. Defiance won the MIAA that season and played in the 1999 NCAA Division III tournament. A 2000 graduate of Defiance College and a native of Defiance, Ohio, he began his coaching career as an assistant varsity coach at Preble Shawnee High School in Camden, Ohio, during the 2000 campaign. Landon and his wife Rhonda have a daughter, Riley, and are expecting their second child this fall.
MIKE NEUBERGER 3rd Season / Tight Ends/Slots / Dayton 05 Former Flyer football player Mike Neuberger returns for his fourth season on UD s staff. He began his coaching career in 2005 on the defensive side of the football. Neuberger assisted in coaching the defensive backs with former Flyer head coach Mike Kelly. In the summer of 2006 Neuberger was hired on as the offensive graduate assistant, and took the full responsibility of coaching the tight end position in a pro-style offense. This was Neuberger s first experience on the offensive side of the ball. Under the leadership of offensive coordinator Dave Whilding and line coach Chris Ochs, Neuberger s knowledge of the pro-style offense quickly grew. Following the 2006 season the decision was made to make some major changes in the Flyer offense. Throughout the winter and into the spring the transition of the classic pro-set offense into the spread had begun. Within the new offensive formation Neuberger s coaching responsibilities changed yet again, now coaching players who lined not only as tight ends but also as wide receivers. Neuberger played four seasons in the secondary and on special teams at UD from He was a member of two PFL champinoship teams and during his sophomore season, the Flyers won their first I-AA Mid-Major national championship. He was a two-time member of the Pioneer Football League Academic Honor Roll. He will continue to coach UD s tight ends and slot receivers. BRIAN STEINER 3rd Season / Defensive Ends / Bluffton 03 Brian Steiner joined the Flyer football staff in 2006 after stints at Illinois Wesleyan and Toledo. His duties at UD are the same as what he had at those two schools - coaching the defensive line. While coaching at Illinois Wesleyan, Steiner earned his Masters in Psychology of Sport and Physical Activity. He did his undergraduate work at Bluffton University, where he was a three-year starter at defensive end and linebacker. While at Bluffton, highlights of his playing career included being a member of the Heartland Conference co champions in 2000, being two-time Academic All-District, earning all-conference honors as a senior, and serving as a team captain. He graduated from Bluffton in 2003 with a B.A. in Sports Management with a minor in Coaching. The Joseph Minham, Sr. Coaching Assistantship Position was established to represent a lasting legacy for Mr. Joseph Minham Sr. The assistantship supports a football coach starting out in the profession at the University of Dayton. It is fitting that the Assistantship is designated for an individual who is assisting the THE COACHES Neuberger is this year s Tony Ernst. Tony Ernst, a former quarterback who wore No. 6 and was a 1995 UD graduate, passed away unexpectedly soon after he graduated from UD and established himself in the business world. As a tribute to his spirit and character, the Ernst Family established the Tony Ernst Graduate Assistantship Football Coaching Position in The position is being funded by the annual Tony Ernst Memorial Golf Tournament, which began in football program in a coaching position to better themselves in a career of academics and football. This position mirrors exactly what Mr. Minham did for so many years, supporting the people and organizations he truly cared about, his family and his Flyer Family. Joe s daughter and son-in-law, Louise and Stan Maher, made the establishment of this annual assistantship position possible. PATRICK HENRY 2nd Season / Wide Receivers / Defiance 05 Patrick Henry joined the Flyer football program in the spring of He will work again with UD s receivers. This is the same capacity he held in two years at Clarion University. In addition to - working with Clarion s wideouts Henry was involved in the program s opponent scouting and self-scouting. He played quarterback for Defiance College, lettering three seasons. VWhile at Defiance, he was part of a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championship team. Henry earned his Bachelor s in Secondary Education from Defiance in 2005, and his Master s in Education from Clarion in While an undergrad, he was involved in Big Brothers and Big Sisters, and was a mentor at St. Mary Catholic School in Defiance. 29
THE COACHES KRIS KETRON 1st Season / Flyers / Dayton 03 Former Flyer Kris Ketron returns to the Red & Blue in a coaching capacity, after playing for UD from 1999 to He will coach UD s Flyer position, the hybird linebacker/safety designate in the Dayton defense scheme. Ketron lettered as a defensive end for two seasons and was also the team s long snapper as a senior. The Flyers won the Pioneer Football League all four years Ketron was at Dayton, and Ketron capped off his career as a member of UD s 2002 I-AA Mid-Major national championship team. Kris comes to UD after most recently coaching at Valley View High School. He resides in Brookville with his wife Kristin and son Dillon. JAMES STANLEY 2nd Season / Secondary / Toledo 02 A former Division I and professional indoor league football player, James Stanley joined the Dayton athletics division in the spring of Originally serving as UD s Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach under former Flyer safety Mark Thobe, Stanley began coaching the Dayton defensive backs in the fall of He came to UD from Fairborn High School, where he was a teacher and coached defensive backs for three seasons.
