2 Head Coach Jay Ronayne Jay Ronayne is in his third year as head gymnastics coach at Iowa State. Ronayne piloted the Cyclones to NCAA regional appearances in his first two seasons at Iowa State. He has led the Cyclones to.1 of a point from being Big 12 champions and a tie-breaker from advancing to the NCAA Championships. In 2008, Ronayne had his injuryriddled, young squad in the lead of the Big 12 Championships with only one competitor remaining. Ronayne was named head coach at ISU July 5, 2006 after four seasons as the top assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Auburn. The Tigers competed in four consecutive NCAA Regional Championships ( ), one NCAA Championship (2003) and produced three All-Americans in his four years. Prior to Auburn, Ronayne was the top assistant at West Virginia University, where the team won eight conference titles in the East Atlantic Gymnastics League, 13 NCAA Regional appearances and three NCAA Championship appearances. He coached four All-Americans, seven individual qualifiers, two NCAA Regional champions and 20 conference champions. He was named the 1992 NCAA Southeast Region Assistant Coach of the Year. Iowa State took a slim after the first rotation. The two teams swapped events as the Cyclones went to bars while the Hawkeyes rotated to vault. Iowa inched past Iowa State at the midway point, outscoring the Cyclones in the second rotation. Thompson led Iowa State on bars with a Halfway through the meet, Iowa led narrowly, The third rotation pitted ISU (0-6) on beam, while Iowa (7-3) was competing on floor. The Cyclones were forced to count a pair of falls on beam as they scored a Barnes took top honors for the Cyclones with a On floor, Iowa scored a strong to take a edge. Ronayne feels the lack of consistency on all events is what is plaguing his squad. It is the most frustrating part of this sport, he said. We need to get the job done when it needs to get done. I need gymnasts that step up and deliver.

9 MEET-BY-MEET RECAPS No. 20 ISU at No. 23 Iowa at Carver-Hawkeye Arena Feb. 16, 2009 (Iowa City, Iowa) Anderson Browning Dilbert Holmes Kent Maccani McKellar Robey Salfen Tham Thompson Team Totals Iowa State Iowa Iowa Stops Cyclones, IOWA CITY, Iowa The Iowa State gymnastics team had three solid rotations and two event champions, but it wasn t enough to take down in-state rival Iowa, as the Hawkeyes scored a to the Cyclones at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. It was the second matchup in the Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series for the two teams in a five-day span. Jennifer Salfen used a season-high to claim the vault crown, and Jasmine Thompson scored a to take home the top spot on beam. A couple missteps on floor ultimately cost the Cyclones. Our first four on floor have been working with injuries and have had very little practice time and their scores reflect that, Iowa State head coach Jay Ronayne said. I was really encouraged by the way Jasmine (Thompson) and Michelle (Browning) didn t let that affect them and performed their routines. The Cyclones were without all-arounder Megan Barnes who missed the meet with an injury. Missing Megan in there really hurts. Half of each rotation is going great, but the other half lacks consistency, Ronayne said. The scores will come as the girls can get more time in the gym and gain that consistency we are looking for. Iowa State posted a on bars to start the meet, jumping out to an early.175 lead, the team s biggest advantage of the season. Ashley Kent set a season high with a 9.775, a score that was matched by Ceilia Maccani. Jody McKellar added a and Jacquelyn Holmes put up a for the Cyclones. Iowa scored on vault, led by Jenifer Simbhudas Vault proved to be another solid rotation for the Cyclones, as they notched a on the apparatus. Salfen s claimed a share of the event title with Iowa s Simbhudas. Nikki Dilbert added a and Maccani scored a for ISU. Iowa scored a on bars to pull within Thompson paced the Cyclones with a on floor in the third rotation. Browning added a as Iowa State scored in the rotation. Iowa put up a on beam to take a lead into the final rotation. Thompson s led a solid Cyclone effort on beam. McKellar tied her career high with a 9.825, while Kent set a season high with a Maccani also tallied a for ISU. That proved to fall just short, as Iowa scored a on floor to secure the meet title. No. 20 ISU vs. Minnesota at Hilton Coliseum Feb. 20, 2009 (Ames, Iowa) Anderson Browning Dilbert Holmes Kent Maccani McKellar Robey Salfen Sweetin Tham Thompson Team Totals Iowa State Minnesota Cyclones Shine Before Record-Breaking Crowd AMES, Iowa The No. 20 Iowa State gymnastics team found its winning ways in front of the largest gymnastics crowd (7,224) in program history in the Beauty and the Beast competition. The ISU gymnasts ran past the Gophers in the multi-sport extravaganza. the Iowa State wrestling squad also took on the Minnesota grapplers, winning The Cyclones (1-7) started on vault, while the Gophers (5-4) competed on bars. Iowa State registered a solid on the apparatus, led by senior Ceilia Maccani s Minnesota inched past the Cyclone effort with its own to take the early.125 lead. The Cyclone bar routine was a treat for the raucous crowd in the second rotation. Maccani put together a career-high 9.925, taking the event title. The Racine, Wis. native s score ranks in a tie for fourth in ISU bars history, with a being the top in program history. Maccani s effort was only a part of a strong Cyclone bar showing as ISU put up a , a mere off its season-high tally. Minnesota registered a on vault. At the midway point, the Cyclones led Maccani s bars effort, along with her solid vault and beam (9.775) showings earned her the Marie-Rae Sopper Outstanding Performance Award that goes to the Iowa State gymnast whose performance inspires and captivates the Cyclone coaches, teammates and fans. The third rotation pitted Iowa State on beam while the Gophers competed on floor. ISU had strong performances from three seniors; Maccani (9.775), Ashley Kent (9.775) and Jasmine Thompson (9.750). However, the Cyclones had to count a pair of falls, resulting in a The Gophers did not fair better on floor as they registered a The Cyclones increased their lead with one rotation remaining to a advantage. The Cyclones washed away any worries in the final rotation, scoring a season-best on floor. The score also marked the highest tally Iowa State has registered on any event this season. The high-scoring Cyclone floor routine was led by a career-high-tying from Thompson, who took home the event crown. The closing rotation also saw a career-high from Oakland, Iowa, native Shea Anderson. Iowa State also had stellar efforts from freshman Michelle Browning (9.875), junior Katie Sweetin (9.850), and junior Anna Robey (9.850). Minnesota struggled on beam with a Minnesota s Carmelina Carabajal took the all-around title with a , while Thompson scored the Cyclone high with a
