4 CROSSFIRE UNITED OREGON PROGAM OVERVIEW CROSSFIRE UNITED OREGON Parents of Rising U14-U18 Girls: CROSSFIRE UNITED OREGON is pleased to announce the ECNL structure for the Season. CROSSFIRE UNITED OREGON revised structure will have a positive effect on ALL levels of players in terms of additional opportunities. Our organization can now give players more opportunities for those aspiring to play at the next level. The Elite Club National League (ECNL) is the highest level of girls youth soccer in the country with the top 76 clubs playing in regionalized leagues and showcase events providing maximum exposure for our older/highest level players. CROSSFIRE UNITED OREGON is one of only two clubs in Oregon to apply to this elite program. This year, CROSSFIRE UNITED OREGON has applied to be a part of the Northwest conference for the U14-U18 age groups. The U14 team will play conference play and cross-conference tournaments. The U15- U18 teams will play conference play, a number of National College Showcase events and in the National playoffs held in The structure of the ECNL teams will not just be a player roster. Players that are selected for any ECNL team may be moved into another age appropriate ECNL team for conference or tournament play. This roster flexibility is due to the amount of competitive games and intense schedule; each ECNL team also has the ability to pull players up from our other CROSSFIRE UNITED OREGON OPL teams for any games during the season to give more players of quality an opportunity to experience playing in the ECNL. Additional training opportunities will allow the CROSSFIRE UNITED OREGON players to attend sessions and train with ECNL teams. The ECNL staff will be attending games and training sessions throughout the season as we continue to monitor and identify players from within our program. Those individuals that progress will be given opportunities to play games in addition to playing on their respective Premier level teams. 13 ELITE CLUBS NATIONAL LEAGUE PLAYER ID PLATFORM The ECNL Player Identification Platform (ECNL Player ID) was launched in 2009 to provide a better, more efficient and streamlined process for identifying players with the potential to play with the US Youth National Teams. The ECNL Player ID Platform provides opportunities to identify the top players in the ECNL and provides opportunities for these players to be seen and trained by U.S. Soccer National Team staff. The ECNL Player ID Platform was created with the following assumptions: Players should be scouted and evaluated in their regular environment. There should be no additional cost to players for scouting and identification. To ensure accurate evaluations, players should be evaluated by multiple people over multiple events. To ensure accurate evaluations, the coaches that train and develop the identified players should be consulted as the best source of information regarding overall ability, mentality and current form. By scouting players in their regular team environment, while they are competing against the best players in the country, the ECNL Player ID Platform increases opportunities for identified players at no additional cost to the players. As of , the ECNL Player ID Platform program includes: 1. ECNL / id2 Player Development Programs 2. ECNL / id2 National Training Camp 3. PDP Oregon will be coordinated between The Oregon Premier League and Crossfire UNITED for Reserve Players *Both the ECNL/id2 Player Development Programs and the ECNL/id2 National Training Camp are part of US Club Soccer s id2 National Identification and Development Program. Younger Age Groups In addition to the ECNL Player ID programs above, the ECNL works closely with US Club Soccer id2 staff to solicit recommendations of top players from coaches throughout the ECNL. Players recommended through ECNL coaches are submitted to US Club Soccer for inclusion in the US Club Soccer id2 Regional Training Camps at the 1997 and 1998 age groups. Crossfire UNITED will bring together, one time per month, present U13 players in an academy format for Pre-ECNL development and evaluation. ECNL Player Development Program The ECNL has a large network of over 150 Player Identification Program Scouts. These scouts include coaches from member clubs of the ECNL as well as independent coaches. Scouts within the ECNL Player ID Program include some of the country s best youth club coaches, coaches with experience with US Soccer National Teams and coaches from top Division I, II, and III colleges. The ECNL Player ID Program Scouting Staff is one of the largest, most qualified and most comprehensive scouting networks for female players in the country. ECNL scouts are assigned to observe and analyze ECNL games at each ECNL National Showcase Event. A standardized evaluation program has been established by the ECNL for these scouts whereby identified players will be evaluated on a variety of technical, tactical, physical and psychological characteristics based upon their performances. The performance of identified players will be tracked over time through a secure, online ECNL database. This database allows for longitudinal tracking of the players, comparison of different ratings of the same players by different scouts and is searchable so that the top players in any category, birth year, or position can be identified. In addition to information collected through assigned scouts, the ECNL also selects an All-Event Team for each age group from participating teams at each ECNL National Showcase Event. This team is selected Page13

14 based upon nominations from coaches in every game in the Event, and top performers from these games are also added to the database. ELITE CLUBS NATIONAL LEAGUE PLAYER DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS ECNL Player Development Program is in conjunction with US Club Soccer s id2 Player Development Programs (ECNL PDP). ECNL PDP events provide an opportunity for the top players within every ECNL Conference to play with and against the best players within their region at multiple age groups and to attend presentations from leading coaches or experts in elite athlete development. ECNL PDPs are created with three primary goals: (i) Identify the top players within each ECNL Conference at multiple age groups; (ii) Provide a developmental experience; and (iii) Recognize and reward individual performance and achievement. In , there will be ten such programs taking place across the country, with every ECNL Club assigned to one based upon either their conference or their geographic location. ECNL PDPs will bring together the top 60 players within the conference or geographic region for a weekend of training, competition and education. Each ECNL PDP will include approximately 60 players: 30 from the 1993/1994 age groups and 30 from the 1995/1996 age groups. Players are selected for the ECNL PDPs based on their performance in ECNL competitions and recommendations from coaches. Each ECNL PDP will occur over two days and will include three training sessions/matches and a presentation for the players. All players will also receive Nike training gear. The ECNL will be covering the costs of participation in the ECNL PDP, excluding travel costs for participating players. Based upon their performance in ECNL competitions and in the ECNL PDPs over the course of the year, players may be invited to participate in the ECNL / id2national Training Camp. USYS ODP and High School Soccer The ECNL is not imposing restrictions on players to prevent them from participating in either of these programs. Many players who participate in the ECNL may participate in USYS ODP or other identification programs and some players that participate in the ECNL will not participate in USYS. These choices will be made by individual players according to their own interests and desires. Page14

If you are unable to make a practice, the PLAYER must communicate this with their respective coach within 48 hours of the designated practice. (Unless emergency, sick etc). Missing practice and/or repeated tardiness can result in decreased minutes during weekend games and this will be at each coach s discretion. GAME EXPECTATIONS Players are required to be at the fields at least 60 minutes prior to kick off. Warm up begins 45 minutes prior so all players are to be ready with their required warm up shirt. If you are unable to make any games, there is a minimum one week notice to let your respective coach know. ECNL CONFERENCE AND REGULAR SEASON PLAY As the ECNL teams are competing at the highest level there are no guarantees in the amount of playing time that an individual will receive in Conference and regular season play. Player selection is based on each player s performance in practices and games and how each player will impact the game the team is participating in. ECNL AND TOURNAMENT SHOWCASE EVENTS As the ECNL teams are competing at the highest level there are no guarantees in the amount of playing time that an individual will receive in ECNL Regional Games and Tournament Showcase Event Games. Player selection is based on each player s performance in practices and games and how each player will impact the game the team is participating in. Selections are not influenced by any college coaches in attendance that may be there to watch a particular player. All full-time ECNL players will start a minimum of 25 % of their teams ECNL Conference Games through the course of the Season. Each full time ECNL player will also start a minimum of one game in at each ECNL Showcase Event. This will exclude all games played at the National Series Event. COLLEGE COMMUNICATION It is each player s responsibility to fill out the CROSSFIRE UNITED OREGON College Profile and Questionnaire. After meeting with the ECNL Director and or coach players should start to compile a list of prospective colleges and begin communicating with these schools and learn as much about their academic program, soccer program, cost, and soccer coach. Before each event each player should communicate with the college coach about the tournament they are about to attend and include the game time, the field number and the opponent for each day. Page17

18 After each event each players should once again communicate with the college coaches about the performances at the event and their continued interest in the college. Each of our CROSSFIRE UNITED OREGON staff is committed to help our players realize their dream of playing in college. In our players conferences we will give you guidance on where we think what level your soccer abilities will fit at the collegiate level. We will be honest with you and will be happy to communicate with college coaches on your behalf. When you want the CROSSFIRE UNITED OREGON staff to communicate with a college coach on your behalf prior to an event or camp please give your coach ample time to do so. Each of our recommendations to college coaches will be an honest and fair assessment. If a college coach does not feel a player is a fit for their program due to their teams needs or a player s ability, this is not a reflection on your coaches recommendation. The facts are that all College Coaches make their assessments on players based on how these players perform through opportunities that have to watch the players. CROSSFIRE UNITED OREGON provides each player with that opportunity and it is up to the players to take their opportunities. ON THE FIELD RESPONSIBILITIES CROSSFIRE UNITED OREGON has high expectations with on field behavior. We encourage hard physical play and want our players to always give 100% in every situation. At that same time, we focus on professionalism on and off the field with respect to officials and our opponents. Any player who receives cards or ejections for dissent or foul play will be dealt with very seriously. DRUGS TOBACCO AND ALCOHOL It is illegal to consume alcohol under the age of 21 in this country. It is illegal to purchase or consume tobacco products under the age of 18. Drugs are illegal. CROSSFIRE UNITED OREGON policy on drugs, tobacco and alcohol are pretty simple. Any players who wish to partake in the consumption of alcohol or the use of drugs or tobacco products in anyway will be suspended or removed from the program. ELITE CLUBS NATIONAL LEAGUE AND COLLEGE RECRUITMENT The ECNL was formed with one driving purpose - to improve the developmental environment for elite female soccer players. In order to accomplish this, the ECNL has several specific objectives: 1. Increase the frequency with which the top players in the country have the opportunity to compete against each other, 2. Decrease the number of uncompetitive games for the top players in the country so that these players can train more frequently, 3. Increase the college recruitment exposure for the top players and 4. Provide an alternative identification program for these players to be identified for US youth soccer national teams. Every member club of the ECNL is dedicated to accomplishing these objectives. By coming together in the ECNL, ECNL member clubs are part of the ECNL Scouting Program which requires each club to scout one game per day of another ECNL member club. This is an important component in helping to make the changes necessary to accomplish these objectives far more quickly, efficiently, and effectively. The ECNL brings together the best female soccer clubs in the country to compete against each other in 4 regular season events and 1 post-season event. However, for the first time ever, the competitive schedule for these games for the entire year is determined at the beginning of the year. As such, college coaches can more Page18

19 easily plan their recruiting calendar to ensure that they see all the players in which they are interested and see them competing against the best players in the country. To ensure maximum exposure for all ECNL players, all ECNL games will be played at adjacent fields and at similar times at all ECNL events. At some events, ECNL games will be played on their own independent site. The ECNL is working with each showcase to ensure that the ECNL games are provided maximum exposure and that the drawing power of every ECNL club is combined to increase attendance of college coaches for all teams. Additionally, due to the structure of the ECNL, ECNL members are guaranteed acceptance into the collegiate showcase events at which the ECNL regular season games are played. NCAA Division I, II III and NAIA college soccer programs recruit nationally, and opportunities to play in NCAA Division I tend to go to players from nationally competitive teams. Elite players maximize their opportunity to be recruited for college and to be identified for the national team by playing against the top talent from around the country at the best college showcases. The ECNL guarantees you the opportunity to play the best players, at the biggest showcase events, every year. The ECNL is now offering special opportunities to senior players by offering additional profile opportunities for non-committed seniors at showcases. ELITE CLUBS NATIONAL LEAGUE AND COMMITTED COLLEGE PLAYERS Below is a statement from a Division 1 College Coach. The conversation revolved around players who have committed to play for college programs during their junior year and the preparation for the college game during their Senior year. This is relevant for all of you who have aspirations to play or start in college in a year's time. These are his thoughts: As Head Coach of a College Program it's vital for me to know that the players that are committed to our program are continuing to improve their game all year round. Often is the case when a player commits to a collegiate program and the individual then becomes complacent and casual in their approach to the game because they feel the decision has been made. However, this is so far from the truth, it needs to kick-start their appetite to improve their game and be the driving force behind their work ethic. As Head Coach, I try to stress to my incoming players the sheer importance of raising their level of play, the level of their performance, their commitment and dedication to the game as this will play a vital role in their preparation for the next level. I want to know my players are not resting on their laurels but are continually stretching themselves to become better players at training, games, tournaments, any opportunity which should inevitably lead to a better well rounded player arriving the first day of pre-season for their new college. At the college showcase events, I often attend the games of players who have already committed to my college program to assess if they are continuing to push themselves. This helps me to start to assess my squad of players prior to preseason. When you commit to a program and that college commits to you, the real work starts. With the College Soccer Pre-Season being so short, the emphasis falls on players to work through their Senior year at the highest level possible and follow the program that I send to them to continue to work over the summer prior to entering their Freshman year. 22 Rosters and League Rules ELITE CLUBS NATIONAL LEAGUE FAQ s What is the roster limit at ECNL and why? The roster limit is 26 for U14-U17 and 32 for U18s. Once a player is added they cannot be dropped from the roster and players are eligible for all ECNL games and Showcases. Players can be rostered on multiple ECNL teams with a club as long as they are age appropriate but a player may only play in one ECNL game per event per day of the event. The number of players that are allowed on a roster is higher to maintain a elite level of play as often teams suffer injuries through the course of a competitive season and to provide opportunities within an organization for players on other teams to be rewarded for performance. How many players will be selected for an ECNL team at tryouts? A maximum of players will be selected for each ECNL team at tryouts. If you are selected for an ECNL Team at tryouts, can you be moved and placed on the Reserve team through the course of the season? No, if you are selected on an ECNL team at tryouts you will remain on the ECNL team for the duration of the season. Can ECNL Teams have guest players? Only players from within CROSSFIRE UNITED OREGON (Reserve players) can be added to an ECNL roster for a CROSSFIRE UNITED OREGON ECNL team. No players can guest play from outside CROSSFIRE UNITED OREGON. These players will be added based on their performance, ability and opportunity within the ECNL Teams. Once these players are pulled into the ECNL Team for any event or game, they remain on the roster and can play in any ECNL future events and games. What about playing time in Conference Play and College Showcases? The ECNL is the highest level of play for girls youth soccer. Playing time can t be predetermined or guaranteed for any player. Player personnel choices and playing time is based on each player s ability, attitude and game circumstances. However, ALL players selected for an ECNL Team at tryouts have been selected as they have shown they can contribute the team playing at this level and through the course of the season players will receive ample opportunities to perform and play. How long are the games? U14 games consist of two 35 minutes halves - A 70 minute game. U15 and U16 games will consist of two 40 minute halves - A 80 minute game. U17 and U18 games will consist of two 45 minute halves - A 90 minute game. Can my daughter still play ODP if she makes an ECNL Team? The ECNL is not imposing restrictions on players to prevent them from participating in any other identification program. Many players that participate in the ECNL may participate in USYS ODP or other identification programs, and some players that participate in the ECNL will not participate in USYS, ODP or other identification programs. These choices will be made by individual players according to their own interests and desires. Page22

23 Can my daughter still play high school soccer if she makes an ECNL Team? The ECNL schedules are created to ensure all players that participate in the ECNL also have the opportunity to play high school soccer. The ECNL is not prohibiting players from its member clubs from participating in high school soccer. Note: Crossfire United Oregon will reserve the option to schedule 1-2 training sessions per month during the high school season. College Exposure and Travel Why do we have to travel so far? As the competition increases, teams have to travel to play the best competition. CROSSFIRE UNITED OREGON selected events based on our location, club soccer season and OSAA high school seasons. These events rotate each year across the country. My daughter wants to play college in Oregon. Why do I need to travel so far to play? College coaches from across the country attend each ECNL event. College coaches from Oregon will travel across the country to watch the players compete. The college coaches want to be able to evaluate player s competition against the best competition. Why does CROSSFIRE UNITED OREGON have the ECNL players travel as teams for events and games? The purpose is to provide the players a college-like environment and experience which will benefit them when they move on to the college level and additionally will limit the costs incurred by each ECNL team member and family. Our intention is to introduce the players to all aspects of college play at the elite youth soccer level. Fundraising Is there any fundraising by CROSSFIRE UNITED OREGON for the ECNL Program? CROSSFIRE UNITED will be holding a fundraiser for the ECNL Program in the fall season and the money raised will be applied to the ECNL costs for the season. Page23
