5 coaching staff head coach steve swanson 2015 is a year that Virginia women s soccer head coach Steve Swanson will never forget because of the successes experienced on the pitch as both a collegiate coach and with the US Women s National Team. Swanson served as an assistant coach for the United States as the Americans triumphed over Japan to win its third World Cup while he was watching two of his former UVA standout players, Morgan Brian (Class of 2015) and Becky Sauerbrunn (Class of 2007), play the entire 90 minutes of the final. The Cavaliers thrashed Virginia Tech 8-0 in the quarterfinals and rallied from a halftime deficit to down Clemson 2-1 in the semifinals to set up a matchup with the 15-time defending champion Tar Heels. In the final, the Cavaliers took an early lead in the 24th minute when Sarah Huffman crossed a ball to Lindsay Gusick, who one-timed the ball inside the far post for a 1-0 Virginia advantage. Virginia maintained that advantage at halftime. In the second half, the Tar Heels created several chances to equalize early in the second half and finally did in the 56th minute. Elizabeth Guess was fouled in the penalty area and Kacey White converted the penalty kick to tie the game at 1-1. The game remained tied at 1-1 after a pair of 10-minute overtime periods and the championship would be decided by penalty kicks. Each team scored four times in the first five attempts, forcing extra kicks. In round six, Kristen Weiss converted her penalty kick for Virginia and Cavalier goalkeeper Christina de Vries saved Mary McDowell s kick to win the championship Champions Virginia became only the second school to win multiple Championships when it took home its second title in Seeded fifth in the tournament, the Cavaliers knocked off three top-10 opponents in an eight-day span to win the championship. In the quarterfinals, Virginia traveled to Chapel Hill and posted a 1-0 win over the eighth-ranked Tar Heels on Caroline Miller s goal in the 11th minute of play. With the goal, Miller became the only visiting player in history to score two game-winning goals at UNC s Fetzer Field. In the semifinals, the Cavaliers used a two-goal, one-assist performance from Tournament MVP Morgan Brian to down second-ranked Florida State 4-2 and setup a matchup with Maryland in the final. The Cavaliers claimed the trophy with a 4-0 victory over the seventh-ranked Terrapins at WakeMed Soccer Park. Gloria Douglas gave Virginia a 1-0 halftime lead with a goal midway through the first half. Morgan Brian and Caroline Miller added early second half goals and Makenzy Doniak pushed the final margin to four with her late goal. virginia WOMEN S SOCCER I 25
