Kickoff is 7 p.m., and live statistics are available at VirginiaSports.com. Virginia (8-2-1) is ranked No. 4 in the Soccer America poll released on Oct. 5, and No. 7 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) top 25 that was released on Oct. 5. In the coaches poll, James Madison is ranked No. 25. The polls come out each Tuesday during the regular season. The Cavaliers are winners of two-consecutive matches, including a 10-0 victory over Alabama A&M in their most recent outing on Oct. 9. In that match vs. the Bulldogs, three different UVa players had two goals each and the team was one goal shy of the school record (11) for goals in a single game. Virginia has not been beaten by a nonconference opponent since the 2008 NCAA Tournament, a string of 19 matches. Sophomore Will Bates (Chester, Va.) leads the Cavalier offense with six goals and three assists, followed by junior Brian Ownby (Glen Allen, Va.) with five goals and two assists. Defensively for Virginia, senior goalkeeper Diego Restrepo (West Palm Beach, Fla.) has posted six shutouts in 11 matches and has a goals-against average of That average leads the Atlantic Coast Conference, as do his number of shutouts this season. James Madison (7-2-1) is coming off a 4-2 victory against Delaware on Oct. 9. C.J. Sapong leads the Dukes with nine goals and eight assists. Ken Manahan has played in all 10 of JMU s games in goal and has allowed 11 goals (1.06 goals-against average). Virginia leads the all-time series with JMU, , but the teams have not met since the 2001 season. In that regular-season finale in Charlottesville, the Cavaliers won 2-1. 3 Gelnovatch Begins 15th Season In 2009, Virginia won the NCAA and ACC Championship and continued its longestactive streak in the nation of 29-straight NCAA Tournaments. Head coach George Gelnovatch is in his 15th season at the helm of UVa. The 2009 Soccer America National Coach of the Year, Gelnovatch has compiled a overall record. UVA ACCOMPLISHMENTS UNDER GELNOVATCH 2009 NCAA Championship Three NCAA College Cups Seven NCAA Quarterfinals 14-Consecutive NCAA Tournaments Four ACC Tournament Titles Two ACC Regular-Season Titles Two-Time ACC Coach of the Year Bates, Monaco Selected Hermann Trophy Candidates Sophomore forward Will Bates and senior defender Greg Monaco were two players on the list of 39 athletes named to the Missouri Athletic Club s (MAC) Hermann Trophy Watch List for the 2010 season. The MAC Hermann Trophy is the highest individual award in intercollegiate soccer. Voting for the MAC Hermann Trophy is conducted in late November, when a field of 15 semifinalists is reduced to three finalists. Those three will be invited to the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis, Mo., on Friday, Jan. 7, 2011, where a news conference will be held to announce the winner. Monaco was part of the Virginia defense that posted 17 shutouts in 2009 and allowed just eight goals all season. He started 25 games for the Cavaliers and registered one goal and one assist (on a game-winning goal). Last season he was selected to the NSCAA s All- South Atlantic Region first team. Bates returns for his sophomore season after being named Soccer America s National Freshman of the Year in He was the team leader in goals (12), points (25) and game-winning goals (five), and also registered one assist. A member of the ACC All- Tournament team, Bates was also selected to the conference s All-ACC second team and ACC All-Freshmen team. Bates, Monaco and Restrepo Earn Preseason All-America Honors Senior goalkeeper and 2009 first team All- America selection Diego Restrepo has been named to College Soccer News 2010 Preseason All-America first team, and Monaco was named to the publication s All-America third team. Restrepo was the 2009 NCAA College Cup s Defensive Most Valuable Player after helping the Cavaliers capture the national championship. He allowed eight goals for a goalsagainst average of 0.31 in 2009, and tallied a school-record 16 shutouts (including a school-record 11-consecutive). Restrepo was named the ACC Tournament MVP after the Cavaliers captured the conference crown and was also named a Soccer America MVP and an All-South Atlantic Region third team member by the NSCAA. Additionally, Will Bates and Restrepo were named to Soccer America s 2010 Preseason All-America Team. Cavaliers Claim Fourth Spot in Oct. 5 Soccer America Poll Virginia is ranked No. 4 in the Soccer America poll released on Oct. 5. Virginia Ranked Seventh In NSCAA Poll The Virginia men s soccer team is ranked No. 7 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Oct. 5 poll. Hoos Predicted To Finish Third in ACC Virginia has been predicted to finish third in the Atlantic Coast Conference as determined by a vote of the league s nine head coaches. The conference made the announcement on Aug. 25. North Carolina was the preseason pick to win the conference, followed by Maryland. After Virginia at No. 3, Wake Forest, Duke, Boston College, NC State, Clemson and Virginia Tech round out the predictions. UVa s NCAA Champion Men s Soccer and Rowing Teams Honored Sept. 13 at the White House At a reception at the White House on Sept. 13, President Barack Obama honored student-athletes from across the NCAA, including members of Virginia s NCAA Champion men s soccer and rowing teams. The President welcomed student-athletes from dozens of schools and various sports to congratulate them on their accomplishments in the classroom as well as on and off the playing field. In association with this event, various championship teams and players were recognized for their efforts to give back to their communities, continuing an effort begun by President Obama of sports champions being commended for service as part of a White House visit. The Virginia men s soccer team captured its sixth NCAA Championship, and first since 1994, with a 3-2 penalty kick shootout win over Akron on Dec. 13, 2009 in Cary, N.C. The Virginia rowing team captured the 2010 NCAA Championship on May 31, 2010, at Lake Natoma in Sacramento, Calif. Virginia s 87 points in the team standings gave it a first-place finish ahead of California (82 points) and Princeton (76 points). In 18 seasons at the University of Virginia (seven of which he was also an assistant men s lacrosse coach), Arena won five national championships, including a dynastic four in a row from on his way to an overall record that effectively built the Cavaliers program. Behonick Named Assistant Coach; Chulis Elevated to Associate Head Coach Michael Behonick has been named assistant coach and Matt Chulis has been elevated to associate head coach, Virginia head men s soccer coach George Gelnovatch announced April 30. Behonick comes to UVa after playing professional soccer with the Puerto Rico Islanders of the United Soccer Leagues (USL 1) since 2007 and serving as the Islanders Academy assistant goalkeeper coach in His coaching experience also includes serving as the Director of Goalkeeping for the Syosset Soccer Club (Syosset, N.Y.) from and as a volunteer assistant at his alma mater, American University, in Chulis has been an assistant coach under Gelnovatch for four seasons, and 2010 will be his first as the associate head coach. Prior to joining the UVa staff, Chulis spent several years playing professionally. He played for the Long Island Rough Riders in 2005 after spending three seasons ( ) in the USL playing for the Pittsburgh Riverhounds and Portland Timbers (2001).
