Senior forward and Hermann Trophy candidate Marcus Tracy scored the game-winning goal for the Deacons off a header in the 58th minute ACC Freshman of the Year Corben Bone made a perfect pass from 23 yards out that found Tracy on the right side of the six-yard box. Tracy headed the ball into the upper right hand part of the net to give the Deacs a 2- lead they would not relinquish. Junior Austin da Luz also scored in the contest for the Deacons, also off a header. Evan Brown played a ball into the box from 28 yards out and da Luz dove to get a head on the ball and sent it into the goal. FIU opened its season on Friday night with a 3-0 loss to No. 24 North Carolina in the second game of the Nike Carolina Classic. The Golden Panthers are led by junior forward Juan Guerra, who was recently named the Conference USA Preseason Offensive Player of the Year. Wake Forest and Florida International will be meeting for just the third time. The two teams have split the first two matches. The last meeting was on September 2, 2004, as Wake Forest downed FIU 3-2 in overtime. The Deacons return to action next weekend as they host the Deacon Fall Classic presented by New- Bridge Bank. The tournament opens on Friday with No. 24 North Carolina meeting South Carolina at 5 p.m. Wake Forest will face No. UCLA in the nightcap at 7:30 p.m. (ET). The Deacons have compiled an impressive all-time record of Wake Forest won its first national championship in program history in Head Coach Jay Vidovich is in his 5th year on the Demon Deacon sideline. 3 The Coaches Wake Forest: Jay Vidovich is in his 5th year at the helm of the Wake Forest men s soccer program. Vidovich has turned the Wake Forest soccer program into one of the best in the country, leading the team to its first national title in program history in Since becoming head coach in 994, Vidovich has guided Wake Forest to a record. Vidovich was named national Coach of the Year by the NSCAA after the 2007 season. Florida International: Munga Eketebi is in his second year as the head coach at FIU. He has compiled a record as the coach of the Golden Panthers. Scouting Florida International Florida International enters Sunday s match with a 0- record after dropping a 3-0 decision to No. 24 North Carolina on the first night of the Nike Carolina Classic. The Golden Panthers are led by junior forward Juan Guerra, who was recently tabbed as the 2008 Conference USA Preseason Player of the Year. Wake Forest-Florida International Series The Deacons and Golden Panthers have met twice previously, with the teams splitting the first two match-ups. Sophomore Corben Bone played a beautiful pass from 23 yards out that found Tracy on the right side of the six-yard box. Tracy headed the ball into the upper right hand part of the net to give Wake the lead. The Deacons took the lead in the 38th minute. Senior Evan Brown made a perfect pass from 28 yards out. Junior Austin da Luz dove and headed the ball into the net from five yards out to give the Deacs the lead. VCU evened the game early in the second half Owusu Sekyere passed the ball from the right side of the field, near the midfield stripe. Sekyere found David Rosenbaum on the right side of the field. Rosenbaum beat Akira Fitzgerald from 0 yards out to tie the game at one. VCU out-shot the Deacons 0-7, but both teams had four shots on goal. Wake Forest had five corner kicks, compared to four for VCU. Wake Forest Ranked No. in all Four Major Polls The Wake Forest men s soccer team is the preseason No. in all four major soccer polls. The National Soccer Coaches Association of America and adidas, Soccer America, Soccer Times and College Soccer News have all tabbed the defending national champions as the No. team in the country. A complete listing of all four polls can be found on page four of this release. Three Deacs Named to Hermann Trophy Watch List Wake Forest men s soccer players Cody Arnoux, Sam Cronin and Marcus Tracy were named to the 2008 Missouri Athletic Club s Hermann Trophy Watch List. The Deacons are one of three teams, along with Connecticut and Saint Louis, to have three players on the watch list. This is the second straight year that Wake Forest has had a player on the Hermann Trophy Watch List. In 2007, Julian Valentin was named to the watch list and was one of 5 semifinalists for the award. A junior from Wilmington, N.C., Arnoux led the Demon Deacons in goals (5) and points (38) in Arnoux was named a third-team All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and also was All-ACC First Team last season. Cronin has started all 74 games for the Demon Deacons since his freshman year. In 2007, the Winston-Salem native scored three goals and added eight assists for the Deacons. The senior midfielder was named 2007 NSCAA Second Team All-American and a Soccer America First Team MVP. Senior forward Marcus Tracy is the third Wake Forest player on the Hermann Trophy Watch List. Tracy was second on the team in goals (), assists (9) and points (3) in The Newtown, Conn., native was named Most Outstanding Offensive Player of the 2007 College Cup after scoring three goals, including two in the NCAA semifinal against Ohio State. The Hermann Trophy Watch List consists of 48 players, including the 2007 winner, Connecticut s O Brian White. White is looking to become the first player to repeat as Hermann Trophy winner since 995 and 996. A total of six players from the Atlantic Coast Conference are included on the watch list. Considered the highest individual honor in college soccer, the recipients of the Hermann Trophy are selected by Division I head coaches who are current members of the NSCAA. The 48 players on the watch list will be narrowed down to 5 semifinalists in November, and the three finalists will be selected in early December. The winner of the Hermann Trophy will be announced on January 9, 2009, in St. Louis, Mo. Four Demon Deacons Named Preseason All-Americans by Soccer America Cody Arnoux, Sam Cronin, Ike Opara and Marcus Tracy were named Preseason All-Americans by Soccer America. Cronin, Opara and Tracy were named to the first team, while Arnoux was selected to the second team. 4 Soccer News Preseason All-American Teams. The honor for Opara is his first of the preseason. Rookie, Veteran Deacs Honored by College Soccer News Three Wake Forest players were named preseason All-Americans by CollegeSoccerNews.com, while five Deacon freshmen were named as freshmen to watch by CollegeSoccerNews.com. Cody Arnoux, Sam Cronin and Marcus Tracy were named preseason All-Americans by CollegeSoccerNews.com. Cronin and Tracy were named First Team All-Americans, while Arnoux was named to the second team. Arnoux led Wake Forest in goals and points in 2007, finishing with 5 and 38, respectively. Cronin was tabbed a First Team MVP by Soccer America in 2007 and also earned Second Team All-American honors from the NSCAA. Tracy was named the Most Outstanding Offensive Player of the 2007 College Cup after scoring three goals, including two in Wake Forest s semifinal win over Virginia Tech. Deacons Picked to win ACC Wake Forest was picked first in the ACC Men s Soccer Preseason Poll, as determined by a vote of the league s nine coaches. The Demon Deacons received seven first-place votes and 79 points overall to grab the first-place position. Maryland was selected to finish second with 62 points. Defending ACC champion Boston College was selected third, receiving the other two first-place votes and 60 points overall. Completing the preseason poll in order of projected finish are North Carolina (5), Virginia Tech (45), Virginia (43), Duke (27), Clemson (24) and NC State (4). Home Sweet Home Spry Stadium has developed into one of the top home field advantages in college soccer. The Deacons have posted a record since the facility opened in 996. The 2007 season was the most successful home season in program history as Wake Forest recorded a perfect 3-0- record, including three victories in the NCAA Tournament. The Deacs also had the best attended season in program history as 29,296 fans saw a game at Spry Stadium in the 2007 season. 7 Match Wake Forest 2, VCU August 29, 2008 Chapel Hill, N.C. The No. ranked Wake Forest men s soccer team opened the 2008 season with a 2- victory over Virginia Commonwealth on Friday afternoon in the first game of the Nike Carolina Classic. VCU out-shot the Deacons 0-7, with both teams recording four shots on goal. The Deacons took full advantage of their scoring opportunities, scoring twice on their four shots on goal. The Deacs had five corner kicks compared to four for the Rams. VCU had a great scoring chance in the 2st minute, but was thwarted by a superb save from Akira Fitzgerald. David Rosenbaum fired a shot from seven yards out, but Fitzgerald got his right hand on the ball and deflected it out of bounds. The Deacons first shot of the game came in the 24th minute. Senior midfielder Sam Cronin took a shot from in front of the net 25 yards out. The VCU keeper leapt and got a fingertip on the ball to send it over the net. Wake Forest got on the board first, scoring in the 38th minute. Senior Evan Brown played a beautiful pass from about 28 yards out that found Austin da Luz five yards out. Da Luz headed the ball in the back of the net to give Wake Forest the lead. VCU evened the game early in the second half. Owusu Sekyere passed the ball from the right side of the field, near the midfield stripe. Sekyere found David Rosenbaum on the right side of the field. Rosenbaum beat Akira Fitzgerald from 0 yards out to tie the game at one. The Deacons retook the lead in the 58th minute. Sophomore Corben Bone made a perfect pass from 23 yards out that found Marcus Tracy on the right side of the six-yard box. The 2008 Hermann Trophy nominee headed the ball into the upper right hand part of the net to give Wake a 2- advantage. With the victory, Wake Forest improves to in season openers.
