(2003) THE BEST SERIES IN AMERICA (FSU VS UF) There in no doubt that throughout the northern part of Florida, soccer fans think there is no better rivalry in the women s game than Florida State and Florida. Since Patrick Baker came to Florida State the series is 4-3 in favor of FSU and four of the last six games have been decided by one goal and the other two games by just two goals. On top of the natural rivalry between the schools, the games have obviously been close and the teams have met in two of the last four NCAA Tournaments as well. There is some evidence though that since 2000 there has been no better series in all of college soccer than the annual clash between the Seminoles and Gators and that isn t just regional bias talking. Since 2000, nine different schools have played in the College Cup and of those nine schools only Florida State and Florida play an annual out of conference game. Santa Clara and Portland play each year as do UConn and Notre Dame but those are all forced match-ups due to conference affiliations. Florida State also plays North Carolina annually as members of the ACC making FSU the only team in America to play two College Cup teams from the last four years every season since A SERIES TURNED UPSIDE DOWN One of the reasons the Florida State/Florida series has become one of the nation s best is due to Seminole head coach Patrick Baker. Before the Tribe boss took over in 1999, FSU was 0-4 versus the Gators and had been outscored In his first season in Tallahassee, Baker s Seminoles finally scored a goal against UF. Since then, Baker has gone 4-2 against UF including two wins in the NCAA Tournament. Baker has never lost to Florida in Tallahassee and since 2000 has won 67% of the match-ups. Baker has also turned this into a series between ranked teams. When the two squads meet Friday, it will be the first regular season meeting when both schools are ranked in the top 10. Florida State is currently third in the nation ranked just three spots ahead of UF. That might be a good omen for the Gators. The lower ranked team in the series has won five of the last six meetings. One other odd trend is that Baker s four wins versus the Gators have all come by one goal yet UF has never won a one goal game against FSU despite seven series wins. Florida State is still looking for its first ever shutout against UF. The Seminoles have allowed just one goal to the Gators in each of their last three wins. JEZ THE GATOR SLAYER This will be the last regular season match-up with the Gators for FSU s six seniors and there will be one particular FSU senior that Florida will not miss any time soon. Jez Ratliff has been deadly when it comes to games versus Florida Ratliff has two goals in four games against Florida including two game-winning goals. Ratliff is the only FSU players ever to score two goals versus Florida in her career. Coming into 2004, two of Ratliff s three career game-winning goals came against the Gators. In 2001 she scored the game-winner to cap off FSU s 2-1 comeback win and last year it was Ratliff s goal that was the difference in the Elite Eight match-up in Gainesville. Ratliff is entering Friday s game as hot as any FSU player as she has scored game-winning goals in the last two FSU matches. HOT START Senior Jez Ratliff is off to another hot start scoring two goals, both game-winners, in the last two games. The hot start in 2004 is nothing unusual for the Oklahoma native. In the first three games of the season, Ratliff has GAME HIGHS VERSUS FLORIDA TEAM Longest Win Streak 2 (2000) Longest Losing Streak 5 (95-99) Current Win Streak 1 (2003) Most Goals Scored 3 (2000) Least Goals Allowed 1 (00, 02) Most Shots On Goal 9 (2003) Most Assists 3 (00, 00, 02) Most Goalie Saves 16 (1995) Most Corner Kicks 6 (2000) Most Fouls 19 (2002) INDIVIDUAL Most Shots Most Goals Most Saves Most Assists 4-Lauren Lynch 4-Camie Bybee 1-seven players 10-Melissa Juhl 1-nine players GWG IN CONSECUTIVE GAMES 4 Emma Breland (2000) 3 Cindy Schofield (2001) 2 Seven tied recorded a goal and an assist (2001), two goals and an assist (2002) and two goals in 2003 and In just those 12 games Ratliff has scored seven goals and recorded two assists for 16 points. That means 29% of Ratliff s career points were recorded in just 16% of the 75 games she has played. Even more amazingly 39% of her career goals have come in those 12 matches. With her hot start, Ratliff has continued her climb up the career leader lists as well. She has now jumped fellow wide midfielder Amber Tollefson and moved into fourth place for career points. Her 18 goals have now also moved her all alone into fourth place on that career list as well.

The Seminoles and Gators are used to playing one another in front of huge crowds. In 11 all-time meetings, there has never been an FSU/UF game played in front of less than 1000 fans. In fact, the average crowd when FSU and Florida meet is 2,329. The last seven times the teams have played, over 1280 fans showed up for each game. The biggest sign of how huge this game has always been is when you look at the all-time top crowds for each team. Four of Florida s top five all-time crowds have come when the Seminoles are in town and four of FSU s top 10 all-time largest crowds are in games versus the Gators. The largest crowd to ever watch a game at the Seminole Soccer Complex was in 2002 when 1,603 showed up to see FSU down UF 2-1. At the Elite Eight last season 3,432 fans watched FSU advance to its first ever College Cup. That crowd wasn t even the largest FSU played in front of in The Seminoles played in front of 4,461 fans when they beat Maryland 1-0 and then saw the SAS Soccer Complex filled with 3,687 pro-carolina fans in a 3-2 loss to the Heels in the ACC Championship. At the College Cup, 8,267 fans watched FSU and UConn face off. That was the largest crowd an FSU team has ever played before. Weekly WEEKLY Rankings RANKINGS PS F NP = No Poll NP LARGEST FSU/UF CROWDS CAN SHE DO IT THREE TIMES? Jez Ratliff s back-to-back game-winning goals in the last two games almost matched her career total entering into Coming into the season Ratliff had three career game-winners, one in each of her first three campaigns. Now she has two in one season for the first time in her career. It took her 73 games to notch those three game-winners and just three to almost surpass that total. Ratliff is just the seventh FSU player in team history to record game-winners in back-to-back games but she still has some work to do to set the record. Only one player ever at FSU has recorded a game-winner in four straight games and that was Emma Breland in 2000 (FIU, Oregon State, Oregon and Wake Forest). Cindy Schofield recorded game-winners in three straight games in 2001 (USF, UCF and Duke) and she is the only FSU player ever to record back-to-back game winning goals more than once in her career. Schofield did it three times, twice in 2002 and once in THAT ISN T THE ONLY STREAK As mentioned previously, Jez Ratliff has scored game-winning goals in back-toback games for FSU. The senior midfielder isn t the only player entering Friday night with a streak in tact. MAC Hermann Trophy candidate Leah Gallegos has a streak of her own underway. The junior forward has an assist in three straight games and with an assist versus Florida she will tie the Florida State record for consecutive matches with an assist. Only two FSU players have ever recorded an assist in four straight games. Amber Tollefson did it in 2003 and Angela Bonnafino did it in Four other players have recorded three straight games with an assist but none have done it twice in their career. Gallegos has not only started 2004 with three straight games with an assist but she has a threegame assist streak in 2002 as well.

4 LET S GET IT STARTED What a difference a year makes. At this point last year FSU was 0-3 and heading to 1-4. The Tribe began 2003 against three straight NCAA Tournament teams just like they did this year but in 2004 FSU won all three matches. This is just the second 3-0 start in team history and both came under head coach Patrick Baker. The Tribe also started the season 3-0 in 2000, which was the first year FSU made the NCAA Tournament. The first win in that three-game streak was the first ever win over Florida as well. If the Tribe is able to beat Florida in Tallahassee for the third straight time, the 4-0 start would stand all alone as the all-time best start to a season. The next best start in school history came in 1996 when the Seminoles started out 6-1. While that start was impressive the wins came against West Florida, Appalachian State, South Alabama, Jacksonville, North Florida and East Carolina. Not taking anything away from that squad but a win Friday would give FSU four straight wins over NCAA Tournament teams from THIS WILL BE NO. 4 Thanks to Hurricane Frances, Florida State was forced to do a little schedule shuffling. The team s games against Miami and FAU were postponed. When FSU scheduled a pick-up game with Georgia this past Friday, it meant the game with FAU wouldn t be made up. The Tribe will still play the conference game against the Canes. With the addition of Georgia after opening up against Arizona State and USC, Florida will be the fourth straight 2003 NCAA Tournament team FSU has faced to open up the 2004 season. Not only did all four teams make the tournament, that group of FSU opponents posted a 5-4 record in last year s NCAA s with every team winning its opening round game except for USC. FRIDAY NIGHT MAGIC Since Patrick Baker took over the Seminole soccer program in 1999, FSU has lost just one home game on a Friday night (16-1-3) and is versus ranked opponents on a Friday night at the Seminole Soccer Complex. The Seminoles are also since 1999 at home under the lights and FSU is at night against ranked teams at home. In his five seasons at FSU, Baker has recorded wins under the lights in Tallahassee versus No. 6 UF (2000), No. 7 Texas A&M (2000), No. 20 Wake Forest (2000), No. 21 Maryland (2001), No. 17 Clemson (2002), No. 21 Florida (2002) and No. 14 Arizona State (2004). Last season FSU improved that total with big Friday night wins over No. 14 Maryland (2003), No. 12 Duke (2003) and Miami. Then capped the home season off with a 5-0 Friday night win over Dartmouth in the NCAA Tournament FANS ON FRIDAY NIGHTS GAME FANS SCORE Florida (2002) Florida (2000) Arizona St (2004) Maryland (2003) NC State (2003) 1095 Miami (2003) Clemson (2002) Duke (2003) 1046 Dartmouth (2003) FSU AT HOME ON FRIDAY NIGHTS 1999 (1-0-1) Mercer 4-1 NC State 2000 (3-0-0) 2-2 No. 6 Florida 3-2 No. 7 Texas A&M UCF (3-0-0) George Mason Kansas Maryland 2002 (4-0-2) 2-0 Oregon State 0-0 (OT) Missouri No. 17 Clemson 2-2 (OT) 4-3 (OT) No. 21 Florida 2-1 UCF Ole Miss (NCAA s) 2003 (3-1-0) No. 19 USC Miami No. 14 Maryland 2-1 No. 12 Duke NC State (2-0-0) No. 14 Arizona State 3-2 Georgia 1-0 Big crowds are expected for home games all season long and crowds of 1000 or more are becoming more common for a Florida State team that has been to four straight NCAA Tournaments, three Sweet 16s and a College Cup. One of the reasons fans keep coming back is that head coach Patrick Baker and the Seminoles make sure they leave happy. Every time FSU has played at home in front of 1,000 or more fans on a Friday night the Seminoles have won. With the win over No. 14 Arizona State to open the season, FSU moved to all-time when 1,000 fans show up on Friday night. In those nine games, the only shutouts have come in the last three matches of 2003 (Duke, NC State and Dartmouth). ON THE VERGE There are quite a few Seminoles entering the 2004 season on the verge of climbing the career record charts. We ll follow their progress all season and see who will make a run at Cindy Schofiled s six career records. 5 FUN IN THE SUN When FSU kicks off with Florida Friday night it will mark the first of a series of games versus Florida schools coming up for FSU. The Tribe will play three straight games against in-state opponents and five of the next seven against Florida schools. The Tribe will face Florida, Stetson, Jacksonville, FIU and USF over the next three weeks. Winning inside the state of Florida is a priority to head coach Patrick Baker and if you doubt that just look at the record. The Seminoles are versus Florida schools since In four years, FSU has never lost to a Florida school with the exception of the Gators and FSU leads that series 4-2 since then. The Seminoles have won 16 of their last 17 matches against Sunshine state opponents. Baker knew when he came to FSU that on his road to being the best in the nation he had to first become the best in the state and his teams have won the state title three of the last four seasons. The plan didn t get off to a great start as the coach s first two losses at FSU came to Florida and Miami by a combined score of 8-1, since then Baker has defeated 28 of the next 30 Florida team s his Seminoles have faced. Twice in the last five years Baker has gone undefeated versus Florida schools. The best record FSU ever posted against Florida schools was 8-0 in In 2002 the Tribe went 5-0 but an argument can be made that 2003 was the best season ever as far as in-state competition goes. Although FSU wasn t undefeated (6-1), they averaged over 3.5 goals per game and the win in Gainesville over Florida came in the Elite Eight sending FSU to the College Cup. The Hatters and Seminoles played three times from but since then the teams have not met. The Tribe is 3-0 against Stetson and has outscored the Hatters 11-0 in those games. In his only meeting with Stetson, Baker is 1-0 as his squad recorded a 4-0 win in 1999, Baker s first year on the job. CAN SHE DO IT AGAIN? In 2003 Seminole striker Leah Gallegos became the first ever first team All-American and consensus All-American in school history. In 2004 she is already on the watch list for the MAC Herman Trophy and she was also named one of just 12 preseason All-Americans by Soccer Buzz. This is the first preseason All-American honor for Gallegos and the first ever received by a Seminole soccer player. A consensus All-American in 2003, Gallegos is the first Seminole player in school history to garner first team All-American honors when she was named one of the top forwards in the nation by Soccer Buzz last year. She was named FSU s first CSTV All-American (2 nd Team) and first Soccer Times All-American (2 nd Team) as well. Gallegos was also the first Florida State player that ever received an All-American honor from the NCSAA (3 rd Team) and the first Seminole to ever be named first team all-region by the coaches association. Gallegos also earned first team allregion honors from Soccer Buzz and last year she became just the third Seminole in school history to be named All-ACC first team. FIRST OF MANY? Florida State s 1-0 win over Georgia was big because it was another quality victory over a 2003 NCAA Tournament team but this one a regional opponent. Another reason it was important is because it was the first FSU shutout of the 2004 season. The Tribe set a record last season with nine shutouts and four ACC shutouts. Last season the Seminoles didn t record their first shutout until October 1, which was the 10th game of the season. With the 1-0 win over Georgia, Joy McKenzie picked up shutout no. 8.5, which moves her into third place on the career list in that category. RADIO FREE TALLAHASSEE Opening weekend wasn t just the beginning of the 2004 season it marked the start of Florida State s free Internet radio broadcasts of home soccer games. On top of radio, every home and away match will be available via College Sport s new Game Tracker for soccer. That s two great ways to follow your Seminoles when you aren t in Tallahassee. LAST TIME WE STEPPED OUT No. 3 Florida State 1 Georgia 0 Tallahassee, FL For just the second time in the history of the program Florida State soccer has started a season 3-0. The third-ranked Seminoles (3-0-0) downed Georgia (0-1-2) 1-0 Friday night to equal the best start in team history. Jez Ratliff scored a game-winner for the second straight game and Leah Gallegos recorded an assist for her third consecutive match. Kelly Rowland also picked up her third assist of the year. The win moves the 2004 squad into a tie with the 2000 team with the only 3-0 starts in school history. Early on I thought we played fairly well and in the second half we were all over the place, said Seminole head coach Patrick Baker. Some of that was us and a lot of that was how well Georgia was playing. We grinded out a result. We scored an early goal and made it stand up. We talked about wanting to get that first shutout and we did that. We may not have played as well as we would have liked but to play without Camie (Bybee) in the midfield and still get a shutout and a win is a good result. This is obviously a better start than 1-4 last year so it feels good, said captain Ratliff. This game we kind of eked out but there are going to be games like this. These games are the type you sometimes end up tying or losing and we were able to get a result. Being 3-0 is a great start. The shutout was the first of the year for FSU and moved starter Joy McKenzie (3-0-0) into third place on the career shutout list with 8.5. Florida State out-shot the Bulldogs 13 to seven and took seven corners to UGA s three. The lone goal of the game came in just the 24 th minute marking the first time this year that FSU broke on top first in a game. The win moved FSU to all-time at home on Friday nights under Baker and the Seminole coach is now 12-4 versus the SEC since coming to Tallahassee. Its great to get that first shutout of the season, said McKenzie. It is always hard to get that first one but you hope when it comes they start to become a pattern. Hopefully that is what we are about to start. If we defend like we did tonight, there is a good chance of that happening. Starting off the season we needed to develop a feel for one another again, said Kelly Rowland. We are just getting back to where we left off last season. We ll get there. We have improved each game and hopefully we will get to that high level of consistency. This is the third straight game FSU has lowered it goals allowed. After giving up two goals in a win versus No. 11 Arizona State opening day, the Seminoles turned around a day later and limited USC to just one goal. Tonight the Tribe went one better by holding Georgia to just five shots on goal all evening and no goals. I think we are getting more comfortable in the back and the more repetition we get the better we will be, said McKenzie. Once we get into a rhythm and get the kinks worked out we will play a lot better with one another. We worked some things out in the first couple of games and defensively I thought we did pretty well tonight.

6 THEY LIKE US, THEY REALLY LIKE US It is safe to say that expectations for the 2004 Florida State soccer team are as high as ever. With 10 starters returning from the team that took on Connecticut in the national semifinals last year, FSU was tabbed second in the preseason ACC soccer coaches poll. This is the highest preseason ranking ever for Florida State from the coaches and it comes on the heels of FSU s appearance in the College Cup and the 2003 ACC Championship finals. Florida State was tabbed third in the 2003 coaches poll but exceeded those expectations by not only finishing second in the regular season standings but also playing for the conference championship in the ACC Tournament finals. It was the second time in three years that the Tribe played for the conference crown. Since Baker took over the program in 1999 he has continually strived to improve FSU s standing within the nation s top soccer conference. After never finishing above.500 in the program s first five seasons, the team has finished at.500 or above for three straight years. Last season Baker s Seminoles had their best conference season in school history. The Tribe posted a record while allowing only five goals in ACC play. The Seminoles shutout four straight ACC opponents for the first time in school history and went over 532 minutes without allowing a goal to an ACC foe. Both of the Tribe s losses came on the road and both were by just one goal. The Seminoles fell to eventual National Champion North Carolina 1-0 and at Virginia 3-2. RIGHT WHERE SHE BELONGS It didn t take long for consensus All-American Leah Gallegos to set her first record of the 2004 season and it came before she even stepped on the practice field. The junior was named to the MAC Herman Trophy watch list and Gallegos is the first Seminole to ever be named to the prestigious list. A consensus All-American in 2003, Gallegos is the first Seminole player in school history to garner first team All- American honors (Soccer Buzz). Gallegos had a record-breaking season in 2003 as she led Florida State to its first College Cup. The Los Angeles native established new marks for goals (18), game-winning goals (7), multi-goal games in a season (5), shots (109) and shots on goal (60). Her 39 points were the second-most ever recorded by a Seminole player in a single season and 40% of Gallegos 25 career goals have been game-winners. Last year she tied an FSU record with four goals in a game and eight points in a contest versus FAU. Gallegos produced throughout the season as she recorded points in 12 of FSU s 26 games ACC PRESEASON COACHES POLL 1 North Carolina (8) 98 2 Florida State 83 3 Virginia 76 4 Clemson 69 5 Duke 64 6 Maryland 47 7 Wake Forest 46 8 NC State 28 9 Virginia Tech Miami MAC Hermann Watch List Leisha Alcia, G, Sr.:, Illinois Nicole Barnhart, G, Sr., Stanford Lori Chalupny, M, Jr., UNC Candace Chapman, D, Sr., Notre Dame Keeley Dowling, D, Sr., Tennessee Stephanie Freeman, M, Sr., Florida Leah Gallegos, F, Jr., Florida State Kristin Graczyk, F, Sr., Connecticut Kelly Hammond, M, Jr., Virginia Lindsey Huie, M, Jr., Portland Natasha Kai, F, Sr., Hawaii Carli Lloyd, M, Sr., Rutgers Kelly McDonald, F, Sr., Texas Iris Mora, F, Jr., UCLA Heather O Reilly, F, So., UNC Leslie Osborne, M, Sr., Santa Clara. In just two years at FSU Gallegos has scored more goals in her first two seasons than any player in FSU history and of the players who have more than one year at FSU, no player has averaged more points per game than Gallegos (1.25/game). Entering her third season, Gallegos is already second all-time in career game-winning goals (10) and is tied for first in career multi-goal games (6). She is also second all-time for shots, third all-time for goals and fourth all-time for points. THAT S NO. 14 Thanks to Hurricane Frances, the Seminoles picked up their 14 th home game of the 2004 season when Georgia was added to the slate. Florida State has never played 14 regular season home games in team history. The team did play 15 home matches in 2002 but three of those games came in the ACC and NCAA Tournaments. Depending on how the season goes, if FSU hosts an opening round NCAA Tournament game for the fourth time in five seasons, and wins the first match, the Tribe will host 16 home games. In 1995 and 1996 combined, FSU hosted just 15 home games total. POLL STAR After opening the 2004 season with back-to-back wins over Pac-10 powers Arizona State and USC, and then defeating 2003 NCAA Tournament team Georgia last week, the Seminoles held on to their No. 3 ranking in three of the nation s four polls. The NSCAA, which didn t release a poll last week, moved the Seminoles from seventh to sixth. The No. 3 ranking is the highest for FSU in program history and sets a record for highest ranking by Soccer Buzz, Soccer Times and Soccer America. Florida State had never recorded a single digit ranking before finishing the 2003 season in the College Cup. The squad has now been ranked sixth or above for the last four polls dating back to Very few players on the 2004 squad committed to FSU when the Tribe had a top five ranking, including most of the freshmen but they are enjoying the new found ranking success. After last weeks game, the ACC continued to flex its muscles at the top of the conference. Four of the top five teams in the September 7 Soccer Buzz and Soccer America polls are ACC squads and four FSU opponments appear in the top six of the latest Soccer Buzz rankings. North Carolina remians at No. 1 and FSU at No. 3. Clemson and Virginia are either fourth and fifth in the polls. Friday night s opponent Florida dropped a spot but remains in the top 10 at No. 6 in the Buzz poll
