2 Virginia Stands 12th in NCAA RPI Virginia is ranked No. 12 in the latest NCAA RPI report for the 2013 season. That is second highest among ACC schools (Notre Dame, 5). The Cavaliers first nine opponents this season all are ranked among the top 55 in the RPI. Fourteen of UVa s 17 regular-season foes are amongst the top 65, including nine in the top 40. The Grind Continues Virginia is in the midst of its busiest and most demanding portion of the 2013 schedule. UVa is playing its ninth match in 29 days on Friday. UVa will get a week off prior to its next match on Oct. 18 at Virginia Tech; it marks the Cavaliers first full week without a match since the week prior to the Sept. 13 game at Wake Forest. Plenty of Offensive Threats Virginia has scored 24 goals in 11 games this season. Twelve different players have scored. UVa had 11 different goal scorers during the entire 2012 season. Eric Bird leads the Cavaliers with five goals on the year and is tied with Jordan Allen and Marcus Salandy-Defour with a team-best three assists. Bird Among ACC Leaders Eric Bird has been a major catalyst on offense and ranks among the ACC top 10 in goals and points. He is tied for second in the ACC with five goals and fourth with 13 points. He is 11th in the conference with three assists. Bird already has topped his goal and point totals from his first two years combined (3 goals, 9 points). Lennon Also Hot Freshman forward Riggs Lennon also has been a key contributor of late, scoring four goals in the Cavaliers last five matches. Lennon recorded a pair of goals last Friday against Pitt. He also had an assist Oct. 1 on Eric Bird s golden goal in double overtime against VCU. The rookie is second on the team with four goals. defense stiffens during streak After getting burned for 10 goals in the first six matches, the Virginia defense has been much stingier of late, allowing just one goal over the last five games. Even more impressively, UVa has given up just nine shots on goal in that five-game span. Gelnovatch reaches 250 With Virginia s 4-0 win over Providence on Sept. 24, head coach George Gelnovatch became the second UVa coach to reach the 250-win plateau in his head coaching career. He joined former mentor Bruce Arena in the 250-win club. Gelnovatch owns a record in his 18-year tenure. Noting the returnees Virginia returns 10 starters from its primary 2012 lineup; forward Will Bates, now with the Seattle Sounders, is the lone Cavalier starter to depart. The class was rated No. 2 nationally by College Soccer News in its 2013 recruiting rankings and is highlighted by two of the nation s top recruits, Nicko Corriveau (Potomac, Md.) and Jordan Allen (Rochester, N.Y.). Gal Steps in at Goalkeeper Jeff Gal has stepped into the starting goalkeeper role after transferring from Creighton during the offseason. Gal was the starting goalkeeper last season for the Bluejays, who advanced to the NCAA College Cup. He started 15 matches in 2012, allowing just 10 goals while posting record, 57 saves and seven shutouts. Gal ranked eighth nationally in GAA (0.65) and fifth in save percentage (.851) last year. Spencer LaCivita, who started the last two seasons in goal for UVa, likely will redshirt after undergoing surgery during the offseason.
