1 BOSTON BRUINS PROSPECT REPORT January 17, 2012 Semi-monthly statistical and noteworthy updates on all players in the Bruins organization not currently on the Boston roster Notes: Professional Player Spotlight: Craig Cunningham (Providence Bruins, AHL) Amateur Player Spotlight: Tommy Cross (Boston College Eagles, HE) All statistics are current through games of January 2, 2012 Carl Soderberg is not listed, as he remains under contract to a European team.

2 PROSPECT SPOTLIGHTS PROFESSIONAL PROSPECT CRAIG CUNNINGHAM Providence Bruins (AHL) Left Wing lbs. Age 21 Acquired: 2010 NHL Entry Draft (4th pick/97th overall) With 41 games under his belt in Providence, Craig Cunningham is well into his first professional season in Black & Gold. However, like any first year player, Cunningham is dealing with the new realities that come with progressing from junior hockey to the AHL. I didn t realize how tough the league really is and how tight it is," said Cunningham, selected by the Boston Bruins as a 97th pick overall in the 2010 NHL entry draft. "It takes a bit of time to adjust, but slowly I am adjusting and trying to get better each day. The British Columbia native spent his junior career with the Vancouver Giants and Portland Winterhawks in the WHL before becoming a P-Bruin in September. Cunningham certainly made his mark in Vancouver. As a captain for the Giants, Cunningham was first on the team in scoring, and 6th in the league during the season. After being traded to Portland last season, Cunningham quickly became a fan favorite, receiving the nickname The Hamster. The 5-foot-9, 175-pound player earned the nickname because of his feisty spirit and leadership qualities on the ice, but his stature probably fueled the moniker as well. Noting his size, Cunningham said he s worked hard to make improvements to his game. The biggest thing for me is being small and trying to get quicker everyday and trying to keep the same strength I have [in order to] be able to play against bigger guys, he said. Thus far, that hasn't been an issue for Cunningham, and he has contributed seven goals and added seven assists for a total of 14 points in his rookie AHL season. But the 21-year-old says his first season with Providence continues to be a learning experience. I think obviously it s a new learning curve when I m a junior and it s your first year pro, said Cunningham. It s been a lot of fun so far and I m just trying to keep my eyes open every day and learn from the older guys. Those guys are really going to benefit you Another mentor for Cunningham has become former junior teammate, Boston Bruins forward Milan Lucic. They were both on the Giants in the Memorial Cup championship season. He s only 23 years old and he s already won a Memorial Cup and a Stanley Cup and he s established himself as a very good NHLer," said Cunningham. "I think being able to be around him and work out with him and just to see how far he s come since juniors - it s just cool to see. Also cool was when Lucic lent a helping hand when Cunningham was stranded in New England after missing his flight home for the Holidays. I kind of just called him and said Hey, I can t get home and he welcomed me into his place with open arms, Cunningham said. I spent 4 days in Boston there with him. "It was my first Christmas away from home, but it was nice to able to spend it with a guy that I knew growing up and I knew for a long time. Being able to watch Lucic grow into what he has become today drives the Providence player to someday achieve that same thing in his own career. It makes you want to push yourself and turn and, hopefully, one day be in his position, he said. ---Elisabeth Flynn

3 TOMMY CROSS Boston College Eagles (HE) Defense lbs. Age 22 Acquired: 2007 Entry Draft (2nd pick/35th overall) AMATEUR PROSPECT It s been nearly five years since defenseman Tommy Cross was selected by the Boston Bruins (35th overall, 2007) and the Boston College captain has had some time to sharpen his game while playing for an elite NCAA program. I m a completely different player right now, Cross said. I m much more mature, bigger and stronger and my skating is a little better. I ve been more consistent and that comes with growing. "I ve had time to develop and grow at BC, and it s been a great place for my development. Last Saturday, Cross played in the Frozen Fenway game against Beanpot and cross town rival Northeastern University and helped his team pick up a 2-1 win. It was his second outdoor game at Fenway, after his Eagles fell to Boston University 3-2 in It s so much fun, everyone who gets the experience talks about what a good experience it is and it s something to remember, Cross said after the game. To get a win, I ll definitely put this one in front of the one two years ago. After attending the last five Bruins developmental camps, BC Head Coach Jerry York said Cross is developing the skills suited for an NHL defenseman. He s got size and strength, and he brings a great understanding of the game, York said. He s a combination of an offensive and defensive guy he can play on the power play and he can defend. "There s a real upside to Tommy s play. Cross leadership is part of that upside and over the summer, at Boston Bruins Development Camp, B s Head Coach Claude Julien was excited about Cross pairing up with defenseman Dougie Hamilton, the Bruins first selection in the 2011 draft. He s got kind of a calming influence for Dougie, Julien said. He s been patient about staying in school, and he s a captain, which obviously speaks volumes, Boston College runs a [heck] of a program so that, that s a credit to Tommy in a leadership capacity. The Providence Bruins organization features some local college talent with former BU players Colby Cohen and David Warsofsky, and Cross said he is looking forward to the opportunity to play alongside his Development Camp teammates and former Hockey East opponents. It s great to know some of the guys in the system, he said. You get familiar with them at development camp and it s a good thing. Cross said he is eager to return to the Bruins fold after his senior year, but right now his sights are set on helping BC win its fifth national title. It s fun to look forward [joining the Bruins] and once it gets here, I ll be thrilled, Cross said, who helped BC win a title in But my goal is to be the fifth captain of Boston College to win a National Championship. ---Anthony Gulizia

4 The New England Hockey Journal s Kirk Luedeke contributes an in-depth feature to the Boston Bruins Prospect Report every edition. Boston Bruins prospect notes/roundup- 16 Jan 2011 Bruins draft picks Alexander Khokhlachev and Dougie Hamilton finished the 2012 World Jr. Championship with a silver and bronze medal, respectively. Russia dropped the gold medal game to Sweden in a 1-0 overtime loss after winning a rousing 6-5 semi-final game over Canada that saw Hamilton and his mates score four third period goals to nearly tie the game late. Khokhlachev or Koko tallied a goal and assist in that game, while Hamilton did the same. Both players finished the tournament with solid performances, earning praise from scouts and observers. Hamilton played the last two minutes and change with Canada down by one score, showing the kind of faith head coach Don Hay had in his two-way ability. Although the Bruins did not have any prospects on Sweden s championship squad at the tournament, they still own the rights to big center Carl Söderberg, who is having a breakout season with Linköping of the Swedish Elite League. Originally drafted 49 th overall by the St. Louis Blues in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, the Bruins acquired him in a trade for goaltender Hannu Toivonen before the season. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound pivot has 11 goals and 21 points in 25 games in Sweden s top pro league, respectable numbers after spending the previous four years in the second division with the Malmö Redhawks. Goaltender Lars Volden posted a solid.911 save percentage and 2.60 GAA with Team Norway in the World Jr. Championship s 1A Division in Germany. He is back with the Espoo Blues top junior (Under-20) club in Finland after beginning the year with Espoo s senior team in the SM-Liiga (top pro league). The 2011 sixth-round selection has good size and quickness, showing off a refined game at Boston s development camp last summer. The 19-year-old has intriguing potential as a late-round pick who will be allowed to develop in Europe without pressure given the B s current goaltending situation. Yury Alexandrov returned to Russia after spending the entire campaign in the AHL with Providence. The instinctive defender and former second-round choice in 2006 has split this year in the KHL between SKA St. Petersburg and Avangard Omsk, tallying a pair of goals and three points in 25 games. Boston s top prospect in Europe is defenseman Maxim Chudinov, who was selected with the first of two seventh-round draft picks in Keep reading for a more detailed look at the 21-year-old: Bear Cub snapshot: Maxim Chudinov, D With nine goals and 28 points in just 37 KHL games with Cherepovets Severstal, Chudinov (Choo-DEE-nov) has already eclipsed his previous career-high of eight goals and 23 points in 52 games, set last season. He is currently second overall in scoring in that league for defensemen and second on his club as well. Talent analysis: Although under 6-feet in height, Chudinov is built like a bowling ball and his low center of gravity makes him tough to knock off the puck. A very good skater with quick acceleration and excellent footwork, Chudinov uses his speed to join the rush or keep opponents away from his own net. His overall defense is still a work in progress, but he has the mobility to at least keep opposing forwards honest. Infamous for a late, after-the-whistle hit on Team Canada forward Claude Giroux during Game 8 of the 2007 Canada-Russia Super Series, he touched off a brawl between Canada and Russia (involving fellow B s prospect Alexandrov). Chudinov s natural aggression both in carrying the play offensively and the abrasive physical snarl he displays despite a lack of size make him a tough opponent to go up against. Chudinov is one of the best young d-men playing in the (KHL) and was even named starter for the Eastern Conference s all-star squad, said Fedor Fedin, hockey blogger for Russian Machine Never Breaks. His ice time varies, including two notable games when he hit the 30-minute threshold. Outlook: Chudinov projects as a No. 3 or 4 NHL defenseman and power play specialist. Although his KHL contract expires this summer, his status for next season is uncertain. The Bruins could bring him over for development camp in July, but anything beyond that is pure speculation at this stage. Chudinov appears to be a nice late-round flier for the Bruins, and he may get a chance to win a spot with the club as early as next fall. In the next edition, we ll look at some of Boston s NCAA prospects and conduct a talent analysis on Cornell freshman Brian Ferlin. Kirk Luedeke covers the Boston Bruins and NHL prospects for the New England Hockey Journal.
