Anaheim Ducks Young Emerson Etem looks to secure a spot with the Ducks By Lance Pugmire, Emerson Etem has all of five days to make an impression that will either place the 20-year-old Long Beach product on the Ducks roster or return him to the team's minor league Norfolk, Va., affiliate. So Monday, Etem was the last Duck off the ice after extra shooting practice, hand-scooping the dozens of pucks hit aside by teammates and gathering them in a plastic milk bucket. "I'm a younger guy, I wanted to stay out as long as I can, practice my shot and get better," Etem said. The Ducks have 29 players on their training camp roster, but will trim it to 23 by the time they leave town Thursday to play their season opener Saturday in Vancouver. Etem, a 6-foot, 206-pound right wing, is on the bubble, a 2010 first-round pick (29th overall) who led all juniors in Canada last season by scoring 61 goals in 65 games for the Western Hockey League's Medicine Hat team. As the Ducks were locked out by management, Etem played in Norfolk and scored nine goals in 34 games. Now the team has to weigh whether they should keep Etem on the roster, giving him limited minutes on the fourth line, or send him back to the minors for more seasoning. "He looks like a man out there," Ducks Coach Bruce Boudreau said following Monday's practice, and after praising Etem's skating skills in Sunday's long session. "He has a powerful stride. He looks determined. He may need [more seasoning]. I'm not saying he does. I'm quite impressed with him." In what will be a grinding sprint of a shortened season, Etem would give the Ducks young legs and the draw of a local, promising talent who is the thirdhighest Southern Californian drafted by an NHL team. Yet, with each of the 48 games so crucial in the standings, will the team opt for a more experienced veteran? "I try to pay attention, work as hard as I can in practice, make no excuses and just battle," Etem said. "My puck protection is pretty good. I shoot the puck as hard as I can. I'm not looking at the roster to see which spot I can fill. I just want to show them I can move my feet right with these guys, use my speed, play a solid two-way game and score." LA Times: LOADED:

Anaheim Ducks New number, new role for Ducks Bonino By ERIC STEPHENS / ANAHEIM Since he came up with the Ducks at the end of the season, Nick Bonino has been looking to jump on the handful of opportunities that come his way. A golden one opened just a few months ago and he seized it. Bonino was allowed to shed his No. 63 jersey and ask for 13 his favorite number and the one he wore as an NCAA champion at Boston University. Article Tab: The Ducks' Nick Bonino tries to score on Detroit Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard at Honda Center. The Ducks' Nick Bonino tries to score on Detroit Red Wings goalie Jimmy Howard at Honda Center. "I also had it at Syracuse," Bonino said. "They called me this summer and said, 'What do you want?' I didn't hesitate." If his spot in the first two days of training camp are an indication, Bonino's biggest opportunity in his still-brief NHL career will come Saturday night when the Ducks open their lockout-shortened season in Vancouver. Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau has put Bonino on the second line with Bobby Ryan and Teemu Selanne and it is likely that he'll line up there when the puck drops against the Canucks. For someone who is finally at the point of making a real impact, the former Boston U. star eagerly awaits his great chance. "It's definitely what you aim for," Bonino said. "It's not set in stone where I'll be the whole year. Up until now and last year, I did everything I could to solidify myself as a member of this team full time. "That continues every day. Except for maybe a few exceptions, no one's guaranteed a spot on the team forever. Every day, I'm coming to the rink, trying to prove myself." It also represents a significant risk for the Ducks, who didn't hit the freeagent market to fill the hole in the middle as they look to move veteran Saku Koivu to a shutdown third-line role. Bonino has played in all of 85 NHL games. Fifty of them came last season, where the 24-year-old finally secured a regular role and put up modest totals of five goals and 13 assists. Can you trust this kind of role to a sixth-round pick that has even been considered a can't-miss prospect? Bobby Ryan thinks so. "I really think so," Ryan said. "I loved playing with him at the end of last year when we got the small opportunity together. I think he's poised to have one of those breakout years. Because I think he's severely underrated in a lot of areas." In Bonino's eyes, the change in jersey number represents the transition from a prospect to an everyday player. "You don't really have a choice when they give you a high one," he said. "I don't know, I don't read into it too much. You kind of pick your own number and it feels good." NOTE The Ducks assigned backup goalie Viktor Fasth to Norfolk of the American Hockey League so that he would see some game action with the Admirals, who play tonight. Fasth, 30, has not played since injuring his hip while with Tingsryd of Sweden's second-tier Allsvenskan league during the lockout. Orange County Register: LOADED:

Boston Bruins Bruins require more from power play By Fluto Shinzawa WILMINGTON For too many segments of the last two seasons, the Bruins power play has been more punchline than scoring threat. Last season, the Bruins had the league s 15th-ranked power play (17.2 percent). In the playoffs against Washington, the Bruins scored on two of their 23 power-play opportunities (8.7 percent, second-worst among all clubs). Late in the third period of Game 7, Jason Chimera was called for holding. Had the Bruins scored on the power play, they could have advanced to the second round. Instead, Joel Ward scored the overtime winner. On Monday at Ristuccia Arena, the Bruins took the first step toward addressing one of their biggest blemishes. Before practice, 12 skaters, under the watch of assistant coach Geoff Ward, hit the ice for power-play drills. During practice, those same 12 went through several repetitions against penalty killers. Claude Julien approved of what he saw. I liked our results, said the Bruins coach. I thought our power play was moving the puck well in practice today and doing a lot of good things. We ll keep working on that. On the first unit, Zdeno Chara was at his usual point position. For most of the looks, Chara was the lone point man in an umbrella formation. On Chara s right, David Krejci made his Bruins debut as a power-play point threat. Krejci played the position for Pardubice during the lockout. Krejci was also the PP point quarterback in junior. But for all of Krejci s five full seasons with the Bruins, the center has been either on the left-side half-boards or on the goal line in power-play situations. At Monday s practice, Krejci alternated with Rich Peverley. We try to have more options, Krejci said. We don t want to be sitting with one guy making plays. I think we have better looks and more options from both sides. If me or Pevs are on the point on that side, it s going to be more difficult on penalty killers. If the coaches give Krejci the nod, the center s job will be to distribute the puck. Krejci could set up Chara for his slap shot. If penalty killers cheat toward Chara, Krejci will look down low. Tyler Seguin will be the left-side half-boards quarterback. Seguin likes to attack with the puck off the boards. Or Seguin could open up for one-timers. Nathan Horton will be the shooter in the high slot. Teammates have been impressed by Horton s heavy shot in the first two days of camp. Milan Lucic and Gregory Campbell rotated net-front duty. David sees the ice very well, Julien said. I know he s very comfortable on the right side. With Zdeno as a pair, I think they could do a great job. You ve got two big bodies one that s a great shooter from the slot in Horts, the other guy is a good big body in front of the net in Looch. The quarterback there is Siggy. He s got the skill and he s got a great one-timer. We thought that five-man unit would give us a pretty decent power play. Last year, Chara led the team with eight power-play goals. Opposing coaches most likely will form their PK game plans around taking away Chara s shooting lanes. Lucic punched in seven power-play goals last season. His job will be to screen goalies, tip pucks, and bang home rebounds. This season, Lucic s goal is to improve his net-front positioning. It s not as easy as bulling a defenseman out of the way. Lucic aims to be more agile with his footwork. Sometimes I fall into the trap of letting them get inside position on me when the puck moves from side to side, Lucic said. I get boxed out. So I ve got to work on maneuvering around that guy in front of the net to keep the screen so the goalie doesn t see. You can t really go into the crease to get around the defenseman, right? So you have to figure out how to get in the right spot at the right time. The No. 2 unit featured a two-man look at the point. Dennis Seidenberg and Dougie Hamilton worked the blue line. Chris Bourque handled most of the right-side half-wall responsibilities. Patrice Bergeron roamed the slot. Brad Marchand jostled around the net. It s about moving the puck, seeing each other, taking what s given to us, Bergeron said. I know last year, it was something we needed to work on. Right now, it s about putting the puck on net. Don t force any plays. Try and get the goals off rebounds or with screened shots. Some teams can depend on their skill for power-play success. Pittsburgh can roll out a top-heavy unit with Evgeni Malkin, Kris Letang, and Sidney Crosby. Philadelphia has featured Claude Giroux, Scott Hartnell, and Kimmo Timonen. The Bruins pledge to bring a hard-hat approach to their power play. A big thing we talked about today that was kind of lacking the last two playoff years and all of last year was outworking the penalty killers. Not letting the penalty killers outwork our power play, Lucic said. The mentality has to be, We re going to go out there and we re going to outwork teams. Not, OK, let s hope they don t outwork us. It s, We re going to go out there and do it. We ve got to outnumber them when there are battles. We ve got to make the pass while it s there. We ve got to make the shot while it s there. All tickets for Tuesday s scrimmage at TD Garden have been distributed. The team will recall players from Providence to give it enough bodies for a full game... The Bruins will not print tickets for season ticket-holders. Tickets will be available online only for printing... Unless there are changes, Bourque and Hamilton will make their Boston debuts Saturday against the Rangers. Fluto Shinzawa can be reached at fshinzawa@globe.com. Boston Globe LOADED:

Boston Bruins Full house expected for Tuesday's scrimmage By Fluto Shinzawa, Globe Staff All 17,565 tickets for the Bruins' Black and Gold scrimmage Tuesday at TD Garden have been distributed. The game will take place at 7 p.m. The Bruins will recall additional players from Providence to participate in the scrimmage. The team has hired referees for the night to replicate a normal game setting. The team has yet to decide whether to sign Jay Pandolfo after camp. Pandolfo, who is attending on a tryout, played for Claude Julien in New Jersey in I thought he was by far our best penalty killer that year, Julien said. The one thing I ve always said about Jay is that he s never gotten the credit that he deserved. You ve got players on teams that are unsung heroes. He s certainly one of those guys that I ve always seen as an unsung hero, not just when I was in New Jersey, but even before I got there. The Bruins officially declared Tim Thomas a suspended player at 10 a.m. today. The Bruins are responsible for carrying Thomas s $5 million prorated cap hit. The Bruins will practice on Tuesday morning at the Garden. The practice is closed to the public. The Bruins will not print tickets for season ticketholders. Tickets will be available online only for printing. Boston Globe LOADED:

Boston Bruins Bruins practice power play to start Day 2 Fluto Shinzawa, Globe Staff January 14, :07 AM WILMINGTON The Bruins are practicing their power play to start Day 2 of training camp. PP1: Zdeno Chara, Tyler Seguin, David Krejci/Rich Peverley, Milan Lucic/Gregory Campbell, Nathan Horton. PP2: Dougie Hamilton, Dennis Seidenberg, Patrice Bergeron, Chris Bourque, Brad Marchand. In most of the looks, the first unit has been in an umbrella formation, with Chara serving as the primary point man. Seguin is on the left-side half-wall. Lucic and Campbell are rotating as net-front men. Horton is the high-slot shooter. Krejci and Peverley are rotating on the right point. In Boston, Krejci has always been on the left-side half-boards or goal line. Krejci played the point for Pardubice during the lockout, and also played up top in junior for Gatineau. On the second unit, Hamilton and Seidenberg are manning the left and right points. Marchand is doing the digging around the net. Bergeron and Bourque have mostly been stationed on the left- and right-side boards, respectively. The power play has been a regular area of concern for the Bruins. I liked our results, Claude Julien said after practice. I thought our power play was moving the puck well in practice today and doing a lot of good things. We ll keep working on that. 10 Boston Bruins Thomas to be banned in non-adversarial way By Fluto Shinzawa At 10 a.m. on Monday, the Bruins officially will designate Tim Thomas a suspended player. What happens after remains to be seen. Last week, Thomas reiterated to general manager Peter Chiarelli via agent Bill Zito that he will not play this season. However, Thomas wants to play in This season, the Bruins will be responsible for carrying Thomas s $5 million prorated cap number, although he will not receive his $3 million in remaining salary. We want to do it in a non-adversarial way, Chiarelli said of suspending Thomas. I ve talked to the agent. We ll agree to some type of set of facts. That will be it. Last summer, Chiarelli projected that a team below the cap floor might trade for Thomas. Even though Thomas wouldn t play, a team could have used his cap hit to reach the floor. Under the collective bargaining agreement, the floor this season is $44 million. All teams are above that threshold. There s probably not an opportunity to move him to a team that needs to get to the floor, Chiarelli acknowledged. So, it s a bit of a standstill. He s on our cap and he ll be suspended. Thomas s contract is set to expire after this season. The Bruins can toll the contract forward by an additional season, and Thomas would remain Boston property in If the Bruins decline to toll the contract forward, Thomas will become an unrestricted free agent on July 5. Last May, the Bruins were surprised by Thomas s decision. That abrupt declaration, combined with the team s obligation to carry his cap number this season, will not make Thomas welcome in Boston. But circumstances could change. Too early to tell, Chiarelli said when asked if the team would toll Thomas s contract forward. It s a contractual right by law that we have that we may use or not. Bourque is home Thirteen years ago, Ray Bourque called TD Garden home. On Sunday, Chris Bourque finally could say the same. The son of the Hall of Fame defenseman took his first official skate as a Bruin on Garden ice. To be in the locker room, it s something I ve dreamed of as a kid, Bourque said. I used to come in here as a kid. But to come in here as a player to try and earn a spot is really a dream come true. Bourque will have first crack at filling the only vacancy among the forward lines. On June 23, the Bruins traded third-line left wing Benoit Pouliot to Tampa Bay. On Sunday, the 26-year-old Bourque practiced in Pouliot s former spot on the No. 3 line alongside Chris Kelly and Rich Peverley. He makes plays, coach Claude Julien said of Bourque. He s got good hockey sense, skates well. We saw him on the power play. He does some good things. We need to give this guy an opportunity to show that he can do it with us. Right now, we know he s not a fourth-line player. He s more of a top-three-line player. Right now, there s a spot open there. We re giving him that opportunity to maybe see if there s some chemistry that can be built between those three. In 32 games with Providence this season, Bourque had eight goals and 20 assists. In previous call-ups with Pittsburgh and Washington, Bourque filled mostly a fourth-line role. The Bruins have one of the league s sharpest fourth lines in Daniel Paille, Gregory Campbell, and Shawn Thornton. On the third line, the two-way play of Kelly and Peverley should help blunt any of Bourque s defensive shortcomings. I would never make excuses for myself. But when I did play for those two teams, I was always stuck on the fourth line, Bourque said of his earlier NHL stints. Not playing with as offensive guys as I would like to. I consider myself decently offensive. It s tough when you re playing eight minutes tops and not given that great a chance to produce offensively. Savard to visit Marc Savard is scheduled to be in Boston this week, at which time the Bruins will declare Savard unfit to play. Savard is still suffering postconcussion symptoms. Savard is under contract through at an annual average salary of $4,007,143. The Bruins could exceed this season s $70.2 million cap by Savard s annual hit by placing the center on long-term injured reserve. However, it s possible the Bruins won t have to use that option. Unlike , performance bonuses will not initially be counted toward the cap. For example, only Tyler Seguin s $900,000 base salary will count toward the cap. If Seguin earns his maximum of $2.65 million in bonuses, setting the Bruins over the cap, they can include part or all of that amount in the bonus cushion. They would then be penalized that amount in We ve got a lot of flexibility this year, said Chiarelli. Do I suspect we ll use Savard s LTI? It depends. [Owner Jeremy] Jacobs has allowed us to pursue those types of players. He wants to win. I think if we presented a compelling case, I think he d let us use it. McQuaid ready Adam McQuaid underwent surgery in October to remove a blood clot near his right shoulder. The procedure required doctors to remove a rib and part of McQuaid s neck muscle. But McQuaid expects to play against the Rangers on Saturday. I feel pretty close, McQuaid said. I feel like every day is getting better. It s coming pretty quick. McQuaid missed last year s playoffs because of a concussion. The defenseman s last game was April 5, when he skated only eight shifts against Ottawa. He certainly didn t stick out in the group as far as a guy being off his game or anything else, Julien said. We re looking forward to having a guy like him. We missed him last year.... The Bruins probably will open the season with one extra forward and one spare defenseman. On Sunday, four forwards practiced on an extra line: Lane MacDermid, Jay Pandolfo, Ryan Spooner, and Jamie Tardif. Three defensemen are competing for the No. 7 job: Aaron Johnson, Matt Bartkowski, and David Warsofsky... The Bruins will have an intrasquad scrimmage Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Garden. The scrimmage is free. Fans must claim tickets at the Garden box office or at The Bruins will offer three complimentary food or non-alcoholic beverage items to fans during January home games. Other benefits include a 25 percent sale on merchandise in the Garden pro shop during home games; free T-shirts to all fans on Saturday; and a raffle for free travel on the team charter to an away game. 11 Boston Bruins Familiar faces at Bruins practice By Fluto Shinzawa You are reading this article for free courtesy of BostonGlobe.com. Get unlimited access. There were few surprises as the Bruins hit the TD Garden ice Sunday for their first official post-lockout practice. Three of the four lines have played together before. Two of the three defense pairings were the same from previous seasons. The only major difference from last season is in goal, where Tuukka Rask will replace Tim Thomas as the No. 1 puck-stopper. Besides the goaltending change, it will be business as usual. Given a 48- game dash to the playoffs, familiarity is a significant asset. You re going to see pretty much what you ve seen before, said general manager Peter Chiarelli. Everyone s healthy. Everyone s excited. We ve got changes in goal. You re going to see a good team. I ve talked about condensing expectations, which magnifies them, I guess. You re going to see a team that s highly, highly motivated. Patrice Bergeron centered Brad Marchand and Tyler Seguin. David Krejci was between Milan Lucic and Nathan Horton. The fourth line of Daniel Paille, Gregory Campbell, and Shawn Thornton was the same. On defense, Zdeno Chara was paired with Johnny Boychuk, one of his regular partners. Andrew Ference skated with Adam McQuaid. The only new faces in the projected 18-man skating unit were Chris Bourque and Dougie Hamilton. Bourque practiced alongside regular thirdliners Chris Kelly and Rich Peverley. Hamilton was paired with veteran Dennis Seidenberg. For coach Claude Julien, there will be few surprises as he prepares his team for the compressed schedule. Julien knows the majority of this group practically better than his own family. You hope that those years with the same team and the years being here will help, said Julien, entering his sixth season behind the Bruins bench. It goes back to what I was talking about earlier about guys who haven t played much vs. guys who have played. There might be some guys that are key players who may be a little slow off the mark because of the fact they didn t play. Being proactive as a coach, maybe they get a little less ice time. It s not punishment. But it s because they re not ready to have more ice time. That s by knowing your players and knowing what they can do and give you. In previous camps, the Bruins, like every other team, would have had enough bodies to dress two squads. Julien and his assistants practiced more patience to adjust to pace and systems. This camp is different. There are no preseason games, save for an intrasquad scrimmage Tuesday night at the Garden. Only five practices stand between the Bruins and the New York Rangers, their season-opening opponents on Saturday. On Sunday, the Bruins sprinted through an hourlong practice. Julien was quick to bark at his players when they failed to execute a drill correctly. We can t ease into this, Julien said. We ve got to get on top of our game as soon as possible. You probably heard me chirping a little bit more about certain things. This is not about, Hey, this is the first day, we ll take it easy. We ve got to get to work here. There s no time to waste. The challenge Julien faces is striking a balance between stability and accountability. Traditionally, Julien has been conservative with lineup changes. But if faced with a losing streak, Julien will rework the lineup he debuted in Sunday s practice. You ve got to be a little bit more proactive, Julien said. When you ve got 82 games, sometimes you ll tell yourself, I ll give these guys a little more time here. They ll get through it and they ll be better. It might be a little different with this schedule. We may not have time to let them go through a slump or whatever you want to call it. At the same time, it ll probably be up to me to be more proactive and find solutions to push those buttons, hopefully to our advantage. The player facing the biggest adjustment is Hamilton. Earlier this month, he was feeling the pain of Canada s fourth-place finish at the World Junior Championship. During the tournament, which features the world s top teenagers, Hamilton didn t play his best. Scouts saw a 19-year-old pressing to create offensive chances. Last Sunday, Hamilton and his Team Canada teammates were traveling back from Ufa, Russia. They were at London s Heathrow Airport. Their transatlantic flight had been scrubbed. They were due for a 12-hour layover. Hamilton s frustration dissolved when news came of the lockout s conclusion. Little bad news, then a little good news after that, Hamilton said. In the front office, Chiarelli and his brain trust are already looking ahead. The cap has been set at $64.3 million. As the Bruins seek cap compliance, there likely will be future change. Horton, Ference, and backup goalie Anton Khudobin will become unrestricted free agents. The Bruins must re-sign Rask (restricted after this season). They must even look beyond 2014, the last year under contract for Bergeron and Seidenberg. Chiarelli noted the two compliance buyouts over the next two years that he will have as tools. The current collective bargaining agreement also allows teams to retain cash in trades. Tons of combinations have been going through my head as to how to continue to ice this competitive a team to challenge for the Cup. I m still in that stage, Chiarelli said. We ve got some key signings, whether they re expiring contracts or going into their final years, like Bergy, Horton, and Ference, guys like that, the goalies. We ve got some decisions to make. The roster has been stable even dating to the Bruins Stanley Cup-winning season. Of the 20 players expected to be in uniform against the Rangers, 18 were at Rogers Arena to lift the Cup on June 15, On Saturday, the Bruins will take their first step toward using that stability to their advantage. 12 Boston Bruins Looking to break the ice Fans are welcomed back to the Garden By Kevin Paul Dupont You are reading this article for free courtesy of BostonGlobe.com. Get unlimited access. Hockey returned to its Causeway Street roots Sunday, the Bruins finally lugging sticks and logging shifts amid a season nearly rendered a DNP (did not play) by the third lockout in NHL history. The real stuff begins Saturday when the Rangers come to town, but by the looks of Practice No. 1, much of what we ll see on Opening Night will look very familiar. You re going to see pretty much what you ve seen before, noted general manager Peter Chiarelli, who greeted the media in a morning news conference. You re going to see a good team. How good, of course, depends on such factors as: Tuukka Rask s readiness to fill the No. 1 goalie position vacated by Tim Back to the Bunker Thomas. Raw rookie Dougie Hamilton s ability to contribute valuable, possibly offensively productive, minutes to the blue line. He looked hand-in-glove comfortable partnering with Dennis Seidenberg during long stretches of Sunday s one-hour workout. I m going to help him out as much as I can, promised the dependable Seidenberg. Nathan Horton s effectiveness now that he appears to have overcome his long-lingering concussion symptoms. He last played Jan. 22, and plugged in on right wing in the first skate with first-line partners Milan Lucic and David Krejci. The full lineup s ability to thrive in a grueling schedule that dictates playing 48 games across 96 days before the start of the playoffs in the first week of May. The playoffs again will have clubs playing every other night for the duration, with Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final set for June 28 (jot that down in your wedding planner). We ll all have to rest, eat well, said Patrice Bergeron, back only recently from Lugano, Switzerland, where he kept his game tuned. We all know it s going to be a tight schedule. We ll be smart, enjoy it. What a difference, in terms of roster composition and confidence, between what was on display Sunday and how the Bruins emerged from the lockout. When camp opened in October 2005, following a full season lost to labor strife, the Bruins were minus the likes of veterans Sergei Gonchar, Mike Knuble, and Michael Nylander, all but leaving then-gm Mike O Connell to scour the Pioneer Valley midnight beer league to spackle and patch his roster. Team owner Jeremy Jacobs was certain O Connell would have the pick of the litter in post-lockout free agency, but instead O Connell was left to pick from the litter box. Thanks, boss. Chiarelli, with the lockout looming this time, opted to write long-term deals for core roster players such as Lucic, Brad Marchand, and Tyler Seguin. All of which now leaves such pressing issues as how to fill the third-line left wing spot (perhaps Chris Bourque), how best to massage the final look of the blue line, and whether to stock the team buffet with red or green grapes. For the record: The back line opening is Hamilton s to lose, and if he can t hold it then it s up to candidates Matt Bartkowski, Aaron Johnson, or David Warsofsky. The practice tempo was quick, the feel business-like. If not for the slightly larger roster, it had the ho-hum aura of a mid-january workout in a season that started in October. The surplus of 5-6 players was barely noticeable, no surprise under the efficient hand of coach Claude Julien. The workout was open to the public, with some 500 fans in the stands as it began just before 1 p.m. Free admission, free parking, a rarity in Jacobstown, and free eats weren t enough to coax more than, say, a couple of thousand fans to the workout. A better barometer of the state of the Hub s hockey heart could be Tuesday night when the doors will be swung open wide again for a Black-and-Gold scrimmage. The bet here is that the Spoked-B interest remains robust. Remember, these are fans who have survived nearly 40 years of detesting ownership, the season-ticket level sinking below 5,000 prior to the renaissance that began with the change in management and the acquisition of team captain Zdeno Chara. Some of the true believers remained on board through a 39- year Cup drought, still talking of days of Orr and Espo, Park and O Reilly, Neely and Oates, and Jumbo Joe, too. If Blaine Lacher and Clayton Beddoes didn t close the show on Causeway, then the business probably will survive twin dunderheads Gary Bettman and Donald Fehr. We re Boston, vastly different today than we were in the Original Six era, but the game remains genetically wired into our sports core, even in an era when the once-laughable Patriots have edged the mighty, mighty BoSox for top billing in town. As practice reached its end, a long line of fans stood in an aisle in the Garden s lower bowl, patiently waiting for team president Cam Neely to pose for pictures and sign autographs. When Chara grabbed a microphone and thanked everyone for coming, and especially for enduring through the lockout, the crowd hooted and hollered. Teenage girls screamed for a staged TV shoot, as if Bergeron had just canned the Cup clincher. A guy in a P.J. Stock No. 42 sweater sat near center ice, scrutinizing line combinations and defensive pairings with fixed glare. The long wait is over, a new season, albeit downsized, is about to begin. First the Rangers, then the Jets (Monday matinee), and who knows what come May and June. Most of the faces remain the same, the goal the same as ever. Game on. We ll find out soon if it was worth the wait. Boston Globe LOADED:
