The third-ranked Blue Devils, winners of seven in a row and owners of a 13-3 overall record, are making their 13th appearance in the NCAA Tournament... Senior Ned Crotty spearheads the Duke offense from his attack position, and the New Vernon, N.J., native leads the nation in total points (65) and assists (45)... Junior Max Quinzani leads the Blue Devils in goals scored with 39, while sophomore Zach Howell has 37 points from 21 goals and 16 assists... Quinzani also paces the man-up offense with 10 extra-man goals... Crotty was joined on the 2009 All-ACC team by Quinzani... The conference s top assist man, Crotty paces the nation in overall points (65) and assists (45)... He backed up his selection in the ACC Tournament, scoring 11 points and earning a spot on the All-Tournament team... A Tewaaraton Trophy nominee, Crotty is Duke s third individual to win ACC Player of the Year accolades... It is the fifth time a Blue Devil has earned the honor as Matt Danowski won it in 2005, 2007 and Crotty tallied five goals and handed out nine assists for 14 points against ACC foes... The New Vernon, N.J. native led all scorers with a career-high eight points against top-ranked Virginia during the regular season... Crotty s selection marks the fourth time in the past five years a Duke player earned the nod as the best in the league. Crotty Named Tewaaraton Finalist Senior Ned Crotty recently was named a finalist for the Tewaaraton Trophy nominee... He is one of six players across the nation selected as a potential winner for the award given to the nation s top lacrosse player... Crotty and Danny Glading represent the ACC on the list... 3 Two Blue Devils Earn All-ACC Senior Ned Crotty and junior Max Quinzani both were voted to the All-ACC team by the league s coaches... This is the first all-league honor for Crotty and the second for Quinzani... The tandem have combined for 104 points this season to lead the offense. ACC Tournament Recap The Blue Devils captured their third straight ACC Championship on April 26 with a victory over North Carolina... Duke advanced to the title tilt, beating rival Virginia 16-5 in the semifinal... Senior Ned Crotty led the way in the semifinal game with eight points off of four goals and four assists... The Blue Devils held the powerful Cavalier offense scoreless for 37:15 and outscored their opponent 14-1 after being tied The championship game featured high drama as the two teams went back and forth, trading goals and great plays... Tied at 8-8 after two quarters, Duke used a 7-2 run over the third and fourth quarters to pull away... The Tar Heels tried to rally late, but Duke held them off to take the 2009 championship back to Durham... Shot Percentage Climbing The Blue Devils shot percentage has climbed throughout the course of the season... Hitting the cage just 26.2 percent of the time in the first nine games, Duke has improved drastically in the past six wins, getting the ball on goal 37.2 percent of the time... The Blue Devils high mark came against No. 1 Virginia during the regular season when Duke hit the cage 53.6 percent of the time... He surpassed the NCAA career wins mark of 63 set by a trio of Blue Devils last season... Playing in 82 games he has played in all 70 of the Blue Devils wins over the past four seasons... Senior Ned Crotty turned in a six-point effort on one goal and five assists to lead the sixth-ranked Blue Devils to an 11-7 win over No. 20 Bucknell in the men s lacrosse season opener at Koskinen Stadium. Duke had four different players with at least three points on the afternoon. Steve Schoeffel added three tallies to the Duke cause, while Brad Ross finished with four points from two goals and two assists. Junior Max Quinzani dropped in a pair of scores and handed out one helper to give him three points after one game. Duke jumped out to a 6-2 halftime lead and held off the Bison in the final 30 minutes for the four-goal victory. Duke broke through first with 6:42 left in the opening quarter as Crotty fed a pass through the middle to Schoeffel who fired it high into the left corner. Leading 1-0, the Blue Devils added two more in a seven-second span for the 3-0 lead after 15 minutes. Bucknell rallied back in the early minutes of the second frame with a pair of goals to make it 3-2. The final five minutes of the period belonged to Duke as the Blue Devils added three more scores in 1:43 to head into the locker room with a four-goal lead. Sophomore Justin Turri started the run with his first collegiate goal. Quinzani got on the scoreboard 26 seconds later for the 5-2 lead and Ross made it 6-2 at the 3:02 mark, sending his shot screaming from 15-yards out low into the net. Coming out of the break the Bison took advantage of extra man opportunities and cut the Duke advantage to two. Duke and Bucknell closed out the third quarter trading two-goal runs to make it an 8-6 game heading into the final stanza. The Blue Devils outscored the Bison 3-1 in the final quarter for the four-goal win In goal, Schroeder turned in a solid showing with seven saves, including three in the fourth quarter. Sciubba made eight stops for the Bison in 60 minutes of action. Parker McKee and Ryan McFadyen helped anchor the defense, picking up seven and five ground balls, respectively. Duke senior Brad Ross tallied a goal with 2:51 left in the fourth quarter to lift the fifthranked Blue Devils to a 9-8 victory over No. 15 Colgate. Ross finished the day with two scores, registering the first and last goals of the contest. The win was the second for the Blue Devils over a top-20 opponent this season. Senior Ned Crotty paced Duke for the second straight week with four points from two goals and two assists. Five other players scored a point in the game. Colgate senior Brandon Corp led all players with five points off of four goals and one assist. Classmate Kevin Colleluori added three scores and a helper to the cause. Duke jumped out to a 7-1 lead midway through the second quarter before Corp scored twice to make it 7-3 at halftime and set up a thrilling second half. An unassisted man-up score 16 seconds into the third quarter by Ned Crotty made it an 8-3 game. The Raider defense came up with big plays over the next few possessions and the offense took advantage of a couple opportunities to make a furious comeback. The Raiders scored four unanswered in a span of 4:28, including one in the final second of the frame. The two teams came out of the huddle and continued the outstanding defensive efforts. With both teams being held scoreless for 10 minutes, Corp finally tied the score for Colgate with an underhanded shot past Duke keeper Rob Schroeder. After a failed clear attempt for the Raiders, Duke took advantage. The Blue Devils sent a pair of shots wide before Crotty could get one on net. Harrington came up with the big save, but Duke s Steve Schoeffel was there to corral the ground ball. He found Ross who was able to work his way around a short-stick defender and get the winning score. Harvard 9, No. 5 Duke 6 Feb. 22, 2009 (Durham, N.C.) DURHAM, N.C. Harvard University used a fourgoal run late in the third quarter to upset fifth-ranked Duke University, 9-6, in men s lacrosse action at Koskinen Stadium. The Blue Devils were led by Steve Schoeffel and Brad Ross with two goals apiece. Senior Ned Crotty registered a goal and an assist, while Max Quinzani kept his scoring streak alive with one score. The Crimson (1-0) was led by rookie Jeff Cohen with three goals and an assist. Harvard got a goal from six different players and four players tallied at least two points in the win. The Harvard defense kept the Blue Devils out of sync, allowing Duke just 29 shots for the game, including just seven in the first half. Duke opened the scoring 3:04 into the first quarter when Schoeffel ran past the Harvard defenseman and sent a low shot into the corner for the 1-0 advantage. That would be all the scoring in the first quarter as the Blue Devils held a 1-0 lead after 15 minutes. The Crimson came out of the break and capitalized on a couple of man-up opportunities to take a 3-1 lead after two periods. Duke came out of the locker room and tied the score with goals from Ross and Quinzani. It was all Harvard in the final five minutes of the session as it scored four unanswered, including one in the final nine seconds to take its largest lead of the game, 7-3. Needing to get on the board, Crotty got the ball behind the cage and beat his defenseman to the left pipe and snuck in the wraparound shot to make it 7-4 at the 13:24 mark. Harvard responded three minutes later with a Jesse Fehr score to make it a four-goal game again. The Blue Devils pushed the pace in final 10 minutes. Ross got a quick tally after a Harvard turnover to make it 8-5 and Schoeffel fired home a shot with 2:05 left on the clock to make things interesting at 8-6. Duke was able to grab possessions over the next couple minutes, but could not find the back of the net. 17 No. 11 Maryland 11, No. 10 Duke 8 Feb. 28, 2009 (Baltimore, Md.) BALTIMORE Max Quinzani and Ned Crotty combined for five goals and three assists, but it was not enough today as No. 10 Duke fell to ACC rival Maryland 11-8 in the annual Konica Minolta Face- Off Classic at M&T Bank Stadium. The 11th-ranked Terrapins were led by Ryan Young and Grant Catalino with five and six points, respectively. Quinzani finished with a season-high three tallies, while Crotty added two scores and three helpers for five points. The loss was just Duke s third in the month of February and also marks the first time since the 2004 season the Blue Devils had suffered consecutive losses. Maryland quickly took a 3-0 lead before Duke could rattle off three straight to tie the game. The Terrapins responded in grand fashion scoring two goals in the next six seconds to go into halftime with a 5-3 advantage. Young made it 6-3 just 1:02 into the second half after Duke got whistled for failure to advance. After keeping the Duke offense at bay, Maryland made it a 7-3 score with 3:46 left to play in the third quarter. Duke stopped its two-game skid with the victory, while the 16 goals were the most for the Blue Devils this season. Duke s Tucker Virtue and Stephen Coyle tallied their first career goals for the Blue Devils in the win. Senior Ned Crotty added two goals and four assists for six points, while classmate Mike Catalino matched his career highs with two scores and three points overall. Duke outscored visiting Loyola College 4-2 in the fourth quarter to capture a thrilling 11-9 victory over the No. 14 Greyhounds. The contest featured six ties and four lead changes as the 13thranked Blue Devils prevailed by two scores. Senior Ned Crotty and junior Max Quinzani paced the Blue Devils again with five and three points, respectively. Crotty finished with a tally and four assists, while Quinzani had three goals, two of which were assisted by Crotty. Duke (4-2) had eight different goal scorers and six players with multiple points. Crotty became the 35th Blue Devil to record 100 career points in the win. Shane Koppens led the Loyola attack with four scores and five points overall, while Cooper MacDonnell had two tallies. The first three quarters were a back-and-forth affair as the two teams battled to five ties and two lead changes and left the Blue Devils and Greyhounds knotted at seven. Quinzani closed out an impressive three-game stretch in six days with 14 goals and a helper for 15 points. Duke (5-2) featured a balanced attack against the Bulldogs, getting goals from 10 different players. Seniors Ned Crotty and Zach Howell added a goal and two assists to the Blue Devil cause, while rookie Rob Rotanz tallied his first collegiate goal. The Blue Devils outscored the Tar Heels 9-4 in the second half as Duke had 10 players with at least one point. Duke has now won nine in a row over the Tar Heels. Since the 1995 ACC Tournament when the Blue Devils defeated North Carolina by a 14-6 count in the championship game, Duke has won 17-of-22 contests against its chief rival. The Blue Devils used a string of six consecutive goals to turn a 4-3 halftime deficit into a 9-4 advantage when Zach Howell scored with 13:05 remaining in the fourth quarter. Blue Devil senior Ned Crotty led Duke with three assists in the game. The Big Red s 10 goals marked just the second time this season Duke has allowed its opponent double digit scoring. Cornell used a 6-1 run over the course of three quarters to secure the victory. Junior attackman Max Quinzani added two scores for Duke, while Justin Turri and Zach Howell both had a goal and an assist in the contest. Max Seibald added three goals and two assists for Cornell in the win. Hit with a penalty after the opening faceoff, Duke was faced with a man-down situation immediately. Cornell needed just 14 seconds to take advantage of the man-up opportunity as Seibald sent a strike over the right shoulder of Blue Devil goalie Rob Schroeder. Duke scored four unanswered goals in the final 17:08 of the game to capture the victory. The five goals allowed by Duke is the fewest this season. Crotty tallied a career-high eight points from two goals and a career-high six assists to lead all scorers in the contest. The win was the sixth consecutive for Duke over the Cavaliers as no current Blue Devil has lost to Virginia during his career. Crotty led the way with eight points (2g-6a), while Justin Turri finished with a career-high five points (3-2) and Mike Catalino matched his career high with a four-point outing (2-2). Junior Max Quinzani dropped in four goals. Danny Glading led all Virginia players with five points from four goals and an assist. Going up against the nation s second-ranked offense that is averaging just over 13 goals per game, the Blue Devil defense was able to stifle the Cavaliers for long portions of the game. Duke held the Black Knights to just one goal in the second half while adding three tallies of its own to pull away for the 10-6 win. ACC Tournament Semifinal CHAPEL HILL, N.C. Duke University senior Ned Crotty matched his career-high eight points tonight to lead the sixth-ranked Blue Devils to a 16-5 victory over top-ranked Virginia. It marked Crotty s second straight eight-point performance against the No. 1 Cavaliers this season. Duke (11-3) used a 14-1 run over a span of four quarters to beat the third-seeded Cavaliers for the second time in three weeks. The Blue Devils held Virginia s third-ranked scoring offense without a goal for 37:15. The win is Duke s seventh straight over Virginia as no current Duke player has lost to the Cavaliers. Crotty posted four goals and four assists to lead all scorers, while sophomore Zach Howell added three goals and two helpers to match his career-high. Junior Will McKee piled on two scores and one assist as Duke got goals from 10 different players and at least one point from 13 different Blue Devils. Shamel Bratton led the way for the Cavaliers with two goals as Duke s defense stifled the high-powered Virginia offense. It was a quick start for both teams as Virginia (13-2) and Duke traded goals in the opening 19 seconds. Meanwhile, the offense was firing on all cylinders, racking up eight goals for an 11-2 lead with six minutes left to play in the third quarter. Duke made it a 9-0 run in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter, getting two goals from Howell and a third from Crotty for an astounding 14-2 advantage. ACC Tournament Championship CHAPEL HILL, N.C. Duke freshman CJ Costabile tallied three goals and went 10-of-17 in faceoffs to lead the sixth-ranked Blue Devils to their third consecutive ACC Men s Lacrosse Championship this afternoon with a win over rival North Carolina. Costabile earned the tournament s Most Valuable Player Award. Representing Duke on the All-Tournament team were Ned Crotty, Mike Catalino, Zach Howell, Max Quinzani, Mike Manley and Steve Schoeffel. The victory marks the first time Duke has captured three consecutive ACC titles since the program began. Catalino added three tallies for his second career hat trick, while Howell, Schoeffel and Quinzani had two scores. Howell and Schoefell both added assists and Crotty handed out three on the day to push his tournament points total to 11. Billy Bitter led North Carolina with five points (2g, 3a), while Sean Delaney had three goals. With the win, Duke (12-3) pushed its win streak against the Tar Heels to 10 games, dating back to March 20, Playing the opening 30 minutes at a blistering pace, the Blue Devils and Tar Heels went into the locker room tied 8-8. No team led by more than two in the first half as the two teams continued to trade goals. The longest stretch between scores in the opening quarters was the final 6:43 of the second quarter. A 7-2 run by the Blue Devils over a span of 14:35 in the third and fourth quarters proved to be the difference for Duke. The furious scoring pace slowed in the third quarter as it took over eight minutes for either team to find the back of the net. Duke turned out to be the first to get on the board when Howell fed Quinzani who put it away to give Duke the lead for what proved to be for good. Quinzani s goal sparked a three-goal run and a 7-2 stretch over the next 14:35 for the Blue Devils. North Carolina added a man-down score in the final minute of the third stanza to make it heading into the final session. Duke scored four of the next five goals to seemingly put the game away with a lead with 6:53 left in the contest. The Tar Heels, however, refused to go away as they scored three consecutive to make it 15-13, but Duke held on to take home the title. In goal, senior Robert Schroeder made seven saves. Eleven different players tallied at least one goal as third-ranked Duke cruised to a 20-7 win over St. John s in its final regular season game. Senior Ned Crotty led all scorers with five points from three goals and two assists, while senior Brad Ross tallied a hat trick. Junior Max Quinzani finished with four points from two goals and two assists. Stephen Coyle posted a career-high two goals and an assist in the win, while Fogarty finished with a season-best two tallies. Ross s three points pushed him to within one point of the 100-career point mark. He will be third Blue Devil this season to reach the scoring landmark. Duke gained the opening possession after a scramble off the faceoff. The Blue Devils quickly established their offense and after a flurry of shots, Crotty picked up the loose ball and dropped it in for the 1-0 lead just 2:10 into the game. Controlling the majority of possession for much of the opening 10 minutes of the first quarter, Duke quickly built its lead to 4-0 with 5:39 left in the first session. Carl Iacona stopped the run for St. John s with just under five minutes left. The Blue Devils, however, came right back and tallied three more goals in the final 2:04 to lead 7-1 after the first 15 minutes. Duke s outstanding all-around play continued in the second quarter. Firing on all cylinders, the Blue Devils added five more scores to their total to take a 12-1 halftime lead into the locker room. Defensively, Duke allowed St. John s just 14 shots in the first half and just eight on goal. Senior goaltender Rob Schroeder made five saves and the Blue Devil defense held the Red Storm to just 10 shots to keep the Red Storm scoreless off the board. Dom DeNapoli won the second half s opening faceoff on a procedure call and raced right down the alley to give St. John s its second goal of the game. Sophomore Tom Rynn responded for Duke to keep it an 11-goal advantage. The Blue Devils and Red Storm traded goals throughout the remainder of the third quarter with Duke leading 15-5 at the end of the third session. Duke outscored St. John s 4-1 in the final 10:04, including consecutive man-up scores from Ross and Quinzani, to come away with the 20-7 victory.
