The game marks Maryland's third appearance at Georgetown. The game will be televised on a tape-delay basis on MASN (Mid-Atlantic Sports Network) beginning at 4 p.m. Leif Elsmo and Kyle Sweeney will handle the commentary duties. Maryland is coming off of a 2007 season that saw the Terps extend their streak of NCAA Tournament appearances to five seasons. This season the Terrapins return six of 10 starters, including Ritz, All-America midfielder Dan Groot and three-year starting defender Joe Cinosky. Maryland also welcomes back redshirt-junior midfielder Jeff Reynolds, who missed most of 2007 after suffering a torn ACL in the team's second game. The Hoyas return eight of 10 starters from a 2007 squad that advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals. Georgetown returns its top four attackmen - seniors Brendan Cannon (21 goals, 23 assists) and Andrew Baird (20, 10), sophomore Craig Dowd (17, 8) and junior Jake Samperton (10, 3) - who totaled 68 goals and 44 assists last season. 2 The Last Time... vs. Georgetown february 24, 2007 field hockey & Lacrosse Complex No. 4 Georgetown No. 5 Maryland COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The fifth-ranked University of Maryland men s lacrosse team erased a five-goal halftime deficit, but came up short in its 8-6 loss to fourth-ranked Georgetown in front of a sellout crowd at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex. The Hoyas jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first quarter before junior attackman Max Ritz got the Terps on the board with an unassisted goal at the 6:12 mark. Georgetown would build its lead to 6-1 going into halftime by scoring four unanswered goals, capped off by Andrew Brancaccio s third goal of the game at 4:16 of the second quarter. But Brancaccio s third and final goal of the game may have been the turning point for Maryland. Terps sophomore attackman Danny Gallagher was penalized for an illegal equipment violation and was assessed a 3:00 unreleasable penalty. Maryland s defense rose to the occasion, allowing just one goal in those three minutes to swing the momentum back to the Terps heading into the second half. That was the beginning of a Georgetown scoreless drought that lasted for 25:14, which allowed the Terrapin offense the space it needed to make a 5-0 run to tie the game at 6-6 with 13:14 left in the game. Once again it was Ritz that sparked the Maryland offense. The Wayne, Pa., native scored back-toback goals just two minutes apart for his third career hat trick. Ritz figured in on the next Maryland score, assisting on senior Michael Phipps man-up goal to bring the Terps to within two goals at 6-4. Maryland closed out its third-quarter scoring barrage with a bang at the 4:06 mark with freshman long pole Brian Farrell s third goal of the season. Fellow freshman Bryn Holmes started the play by causing a turnover that was picked up by Farrell. The 6-foot-4, 240-pound Farrell then raced the length of the field and beat Hoya goalie Miles Kass with a bouncing shot. The Terps closed the scoring gap completely with their second man-up goal of the game at the 13:04 mark. Senior midfielder Chris Feifs scored his second goal of the year off of another assist from Ritz. The Hoyas finally put an end to their scoreless stretch at the 9:02 mark of the fourth to take a 7-6 lead. Dan D Agnes scored the eventual game-winner, his second goal of the game, off of Andrew Baird s second assist on the afternoon. With Georgetown clinging to a 7-6 lead, the Terps appeared to tie the game again with 6:44 left in the fourth quarter. Junior midfielder Drew Evans dodged around a Hoya defender and beat Kass over his left shoulder, but officials ruled him to have stepped in the crease, nullifying the goal. Brendan Cannon picked up his lone goal of the game with 25 seconds remaining on an empty-net shot to cap the scoring at 8-6 and give the Hoyas their first-ever win over Maryland in seven tries. Defensively, the Terps were led by All-American Steve Whittenberg, who caused five Georgetown turnovers and picked up three groundballs. Bryn Holmes, who started in the defensive midfield for the Terps in place of the injured Jeff Reynolds, caused three turnovers and picked up a groundball. Freshman goalie Brian Phipps made nine saves on the afternoon for Maryland. The game, which proved to be an extremely physical contest that saw a combined 16 penalties called, started slowly in the first quarter and Georgetown was able to take a 2-1 lead into the second period following Andrew Baird s goal with 13 seconds left in the quarter. But that would be the last Hoya goal until the fourth quarter as the Maryland defensive unit shutdown the Hoya offense, holding Georgetown without a goal for 38:05. The Terps didn t waste any time getting on the scoreboard in the second quarter. Max Ritz, a sophomore from Radnor, Pa., scored his second goal of the game less than three minutes into the quarter to knot the score at 2-2. Senior midfielder Michael Hartofilis scored his first goal of the season to give Maryland its first lead of the game at the 9:46 mark of the second period.the Terrapins would take a 4-2 lead into halftime when junior attackman Michael Phipps found senior All-American Bill McGlone in front of the crease and McGlone buried a shot past Hoya goalkeeper Miles Kass, who was making his first career start. While the Maryland defense was shutting down the Hoya offense in the third period, the Terrapin offense was clicking on all cylinders. Xander Ritz scored four times in the third quarter, including a natural hat trick of three man-up goals. The Terps, who were up 9-2 at the start of the fourth quarter, capped their scoring at 11:24 in the fourth on Max Ritz s career-best fourth goal of the game. The Hoyas scored two late goals to finish the game at Defensively Maryland was led by junior All-America goalie Harry Alford, who allowed only the four goals while making 14 saves. Junior defensive midfielder Ryan Clarke picked up a game-high six groundballs and caused three Hoya turnovers. 3 Maryland In Season Openers Maryland has a (.957) lifetime record in season openers dating back to the 1924 season. The Terps have won their last 14 openers and 22 of the last 23, with the only loss coming to Duke in 1993, when they fell to Duke 9-5 on March 6 After losing their 1925 opener to Yale, 5-3, the Terps went on to win 40 consecutive season openers from 1926 through The streak was broken when Maryland tied Princeton, 6-6, in the 1968 opener. Following the deadlock, Maryland went on to win its next 14 openers, giving the Terps a record over a 57-year span (Maryland did not field a team in 1944 and 1945 due to World War II.) The Terps are 19-0 all-time in season openers away from College Park. 14 straight in Season Openers The Terps enter the 2008 season riding a 14-game winning streak in season openers. 4 DAVE COTTLE head coach seventh season at maryland salisbury '78 Since arriving to the College Park campus in the fall of 2001, Dave Cottle has continued the storied tradition of excellence of the Maryland men s lacrosse program and helped usher the Terps into a new era of national prominence. Under Cottle s leadership the Terrapins have made five-straight trips to the NCAA tournament, earned a top-three seed four times and advanced to the Final Four in 2003, 2005 and Since 2003, Maryland is one of only four programs to make three final four appearances. Cottle is also deeply involved in the national leadership for the sport of lacrosse. He is currently serving a term on the NCAA Division I men s lacrosse committee and is the vice-president of the Intercollegiate Men's Lacrosse Coaches Association. Prior to arriving in College Park, Cottle spent 19 seasons as the head coach at Loyola College. There he led the Greyhounds to 14 straight NCAA tournament appearances, including a pair of berths in the national semifinals. Cottle, now in his 26th season as a head coach, is tied for first alltime in NCAA history with 19 NCAA tournament bids. He is currently fifth among active coaches in wins with 248. His overall mark of gives him a 71.7 winning percentage, which ranks sixth among active coaches with at least 100 wins. During his tenure at Maryland, not only has the program continued to be among the sport s elite, but Terrapin players have also thrived and received national attention. In the past six seasons under Cottle a total of 20 Terps have earned 38 All-America honors. Two Terps, Michael Howley in 2003 and Lee Zink in 2004, won the Schmeisser Memorial Cup, which is given annually to the nation's outstanding defender. In 2006, Joe Walters became Maryland s all-time leader in goals and points and was named the winner of the Jack Turnbull Memorial Award as the nation s top attackman. The backbone of Cottle s success has been a strong work ethic and an emphasis on student-athletes. Six of Cottle s Terrapin players earned USILA Scholar All-America honors, including 2005 graduate Ian Healy, who became just the third Maryland student-athlete to be inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, the nations oldest and most prestigious academic society. Cottle, 52, was named the eighth coach in the storied history of Maryland lacrosse on Sept. 26, 2001, taking the reins from the ACC s all-time winningest coach, Dick Edell, who retired on Sept. 3, 2001 after 18 years with the Terps. Last season, which was viewed by many as a rebuilding year for the Terps proved to be one of Cottle s finest seasons as a head coach. With an inexperienced offense and an injury-riddled defense, Cottle managed to lead Maryland to a 10-6 record and a No. 7-seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Terps returned to the NCAA Final Four for the second straight season in Cottle's squad finished the year with a 12-5 record and earned Maryland the No. 2 seed in the NCAA tournament for just the second time in school history. Seven Terrapin players earned All- America honors with Walters and midfielder Bill McGlone being first team selections. Walters was also named the ACC Player of the Year for the second time in his career. In 2005 Cottle directed Maryland to its ninth trip to the NCAA Semifinals and its second straight ACC tournament championship. The Terps ended the season with an overall record of 11-6, but finished the season winning six of their last seven games. Six Maryland players were named postseason All-Americans, including McGlone, who was a first team selection. Cottle s program also earned another honor in June of 2005 when Walters was named to the 2006 U.S. National Team, the only college player to be selected to the 23-man roster. Cottle guided the 2004 Terps to a 13-3 record and their first ACC championship since Maryland finished the season ranked No. 3 in the USILA poll and made it to the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament. Eight Terrapin players earned All-America honors, including three first team honorees. In 2003 he led Maryland back to the NCAA Semifinals for the first since The Terps had a stellar season, including a No. 3 final ranking. Maryland piled numerous accolades as they had eight USILA All-Americans including Howley, who was a first-team honoree. The Terps posted a 12-4 record in 2003 and gave Cottle his third trip to the national semifinals. He led his Loyola teams to top-10 finishes in each his 14 seasons. The Greyhounds finished with a winning record the final 18 years of his tenure, dating to Loyola also played in 14 consecutive NCAA Tournaments, entering the 1998 and 1999 tournaments as the No. 1 seed. A Baltimore native, Cottle took over a struggling Greyhound program in Since posting a first-year record of 5-9, his only losing season in 25 years as a college head coach, Cottle s Loyola teams reeled off 18 consecutive winning seasons. The 1998 team s 13-2 campaign, which ended with a berth in the NCAA semifinals, saw Loyola reach a No. 1 national ranking, and earn the school s first No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. In 1988 the Greyhounds began a run of 14 consecutive NCAA tournament appearances. Loyola advanced to the national championship game in 1990, and made 10 NCAA quarterfinal appearances under Cottle. The 1990 team, a potent mix of seasoned veterans and talented underclassmen, marched all the way to the NCAA championship game. In the semifinals the Greyhounds staged an incredible comeback to beat Yale, 14-13, in overtime. Syracuse, the two-time defending champs, ended Loyola s quest for the national title, but the Greyhounds 1990 season always will be remembered. In 1994 Cottle guided the Greyhounds to one of their best seasons ever. Loyola finished 11-2, recording wins against four NCAA tournament teams. The Greyhounds earned the nation s No. 1 ranking for only the second time in their history. Loyola concluded the regular season with a victory over Johns Hopkins, the program s first victory ever against the Blue Jays. Cottle s 1988 squad finished with a 12-2 record, earning Loyola s first NCAA Division I tournament berth. Loyola defeated Air Force for its first NCAA postseason victory before losing to Penn in the quarterfinals. The Greyhounds concluded the season ranked fifth in the nation, and Cottle earned USILA Coach-of-the-Year honors, becoming the first coach in Loyola athletic history to receive a national award. Cottle was also selected to coach the South team in the 1988 North-South All-Star Game. The 1989 Greyhounds became the only Loyola lacrosse team to complete an undefeated regular season. The Greyhounds beat four nationally ranked teams en route to a perfect 10-0 mark. Loyola was ranked third in the final poll, behind eventual national champion Syracuse and Johns Hopkins. Cottle came to Loyola in 1982 after leading Severn School to a 26-9 record and consecutive Maryland Scholastic Association championships. Prior to his success at Severn, Cottle served for two years as a graduate assistant coach, assistant varsity lacrosse coach and physical education instructor at his alma mater, Salisbury State University. One of the finest players in Salisbury State history, Cottle was enshrined into the school s Athletic Hall of Fame in During his career he re-wrote the NCAA record book, while earning All-America honors three times. He still ranks among the top three in goals (179), assists (123) and points (302) in Seagull history. In 1975 Cottle led the nation in scoring and was just the second player in collegiate lacrosse history to score more than 100 points in a single season. Following his senior season in 1977, he served as captain of the South team in the North-South All-Star Game. Cottle received his Bachelor of Science degree in physical education in 1978 from Salisbury. He was an assistant coach for Team USA 1994, which won the world championship in Manchester, England. Cottle has addressed many lacrosse gatherings across the country, including the USILA Coaches Convention, and he serves as a member of the All-America Selection Committee. In February of 1998 he was inducted into the Baltimore Chapter of the Lacrosse Foundation s Hall of Fame. 5 Series History Vs. Georgetown This will mark just the eighth-ever meeting between the local schools with the Terps holding the 6-1 advantage. Last year saw the Hoyas solve their Terrapin puzzle with an 8-6 win over the Terps at the Maryland Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex. Georgetown jumped out to a 6-1 lead at the half, but Maryland came storming back with five unanswered goals to knot the game at 6-6. But that was all the Terps could muster and the Hoyas added a pair of scores in the fourth quarter to eek out their first-ever win over the Terps. The 2006 meeting saw the Terps head to the Georgetown campus for just the second time in the series history and come away with a convincing 10-4 victory. Max Ritz had a career-day for Maryland, racking up then-career-bests with five points and four goals. Older brother Xander also had an amazing afternoon, scoring four goals including the game winner. The series' intensity was turned up a notch in the 2005 NCAA Quarterfinals at Princeton Stadium. The Terps looked to have iced the game with 1:33 left in the fourth quarter, when Bill McGlone scored to give Maryland a 9-7 lead, but the goal was disallowed when McGlone s stick was challenged and ruled to have an illegal pocket. The Hoyas tied the game and sent it into overtime, where the Terrapin man-down unit killed the remainder of the three-minute penalty. Senior Andrew Schwartzman sent the Terps to the Final Four by scoring the game-winner with just more than three minutes elapsed in the extra period. Joe Walters scored four goals in the game, while Max Ritz scored a pair of goals and added an assist. In the 2005 season opener Maryland used an 8-0 run spanning the second and third quarters to pull away from Georgetown en route to a 13-6 victory in each team's season opener on February 26. Eleven (11) different Terps scored on the afternoon with Bill McGlone leading the way with three goals. Joe Walters was limited to just a single goal, but added four assists for a five-point game. But the unquestioned star of the game was Maryland goalie Harry Alford who made 25 saves and scooped up eight groundballs. In the 2004 opener Xander Ritz and Joe Walters each netted three goals, with Ritz adding four assists for a seven-point game to propelled the Terrapins to a decisive 14-5 victory in the regular season home opener on February 28, Bill McGlone and Justin Smith each scored two goals, while goalie Tim McGinnis stopped 13 Hoya shots. In the 2003 game Brian Hunt, Ryan Moran and Mike Mollot each netted two goals, plus Lee Zink s first-career goal and a strong defense gave the Terps a 9-5 victory in the regular season home finale on April 28, In the first game between the schools, Maryland defeated Georgetown, 14-10, in the first round of the 1997 NCAA Tournament at Towson. The Terps jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the first quarter and never looked back as they began their run to the second of three trips to the NCAA championship game in a four-year span. The game marked Georgetown s first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. All-American Scott Hochstadt, the school s 17th all-time leading scorer, led the way for Maryland as he posted five goals. Sure, the unit lost two second team All-Americans in seniors Ray Megill and Steve Whittenberg and also three-year starting long pole Ryan Clarke, but one look at the talent this year's "D" and you'll see it's more than capable. Three-year starter Joe Cinosky returns for his senior season along with a trio of experienced seniors in Ryne Adolph, Jacob Baxter and Zach Hinton. Talented freshman Max Schmidt is expected to see plenty of playing time as well at close defense. At long pole sophomore Brian Farrell is one of the best in the NCAA and the Terps have depth behind him in senior Matt Rankin, junior Chris Rhine and sophomore Dan Halayko. Redshirt junior Jeff Reynolds is back after missing 14 games in 2007 with a torn ACL. The 2006 season saw the Terrapin defense do it 10 times in 17 games. In 2007 Terp "D" had minute scoring droughts to its credit in 16 contests. freshmen starters There is a lot of speculation about several freshmen possibly starting vs. the Hoyas. But freshmen starting the season opener is nothing new for the Terps under Coach Cottle. Max Ritz is currently on a 17-game multi-point streak dating back to last year's NCAA Semis vs. UMass. Overall he comes into 2008 with 20-game point scoring streak going. Other Terps with more modes streaks entering this season include: Dan Groot (four-game goal and point scoring streaks), Jeremy Sieverts (three-game goal and point scoring streaks), Brian Farrell (three-game point scoring streak) and Drew Evans (two-game goal and point scoring streaks). Terps 83rd Season Of Lacrosse The Terps boast an all-time record of (.751), dating back to the first varsity team in 1924 (a team was not fielded in 1944 and 1945 due to World War II). Maryland has finished every one of its previous 82 seasons with a.500 or better record, including last season when the Terps went The program reached the 650-win milestone with a win over Army in the first round of the 2004 NCAA tournament at Byrd Stadium. Since 2000, Maryland is for a.720 win percentage. In the decade of the 1990s, Maryland recorded its most wins in any decade with a record. The.669 winning percentage matched Maryland s win percentage of the 1980s when the Terps went and also compiled a.669 win percentage.

7 A Family Affair Many school's refer to their sports programs as families, but under Coach Cottle the Maryland men's lacrosse program has really become a family affair. Since arriving in College Park in 2002, Cottle has had eight sets of brothers don the red and black together for at least one season.
