1 THE YORKSHIRE AMATEUR ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL LEAGUE LEAGUE HISTORY AND STATISTICS HOW IT ALL BEGAN League became affiliated in season 1928/29 with one single division consisting of just 12 teams as The West Riding County Old Boys League. Since then we have undergone 2 league name changes to The Yorkshire Old Boys League in the 1950 s, until season 2011/12, when the current name The Yorkshire Amateur League was adopted. Season 2017/18 sees the League celebrate its 90 th season. The name Old Boys was used as, initially, all clubs were formed from Old Boys Associations (players from High Schools) primarily ex-pupils of those schools. There are 4 founder members who remain to this day, namely, Old Centralians, Old Collegians, St. Bedes and Old Modernians. From such small beginnings, the league has grown to be one of the largest amateur football leagues in the country. The league was an immediate success and a reserve division was formed in 1936, and ten years later the league had expanded to incorporate 4 divisions. This was due to the introduction of 3rd teams from existing clubs, plus acceptance of others from reputable sources (Banks, Colleges & Local Government Offices. The League in Season comprises 53 clubs and 87 teams across 7 divisions whilst still maintaining the exacting standards of organisation and administration, coupled with a tradition of fair play and sportsmanship CLUBS Many clubs have come and gone in the league s history, 2 of the most successful being Barnsley Grammar School O.B. in the 1960 s and Leeds side Trinity & All Saints College in the1980 s. Barnsley s 15 years in league competition brought an impressive 4 first team cup wins, 4 consecutive promotions and 8 championships in a row from 1967 to The students of Trinity College achieved 6 consecutive Senior A titles, were league & cup double winners 3 times and league runners up 3 times. By total contrast a Huddersfield based side, Ariens, were present for 21 seasons were relegated 5 times and never received any silverware whatsoever. Founder members Old Cockburnians (who folded in 1994) remain the most successful side in the League s history having had 10 first team cup victories and were League Champions on 10 occasions. Yorkshire Bank Reserves achieved most 2nd team wins, cup and league, and hold the distinction of being the first reserve side from our league to lift the Leeds & District Cup. The most successful 3rd team ever regarding cup & league wins are Almondburians. ORIGINS OF THE TROPHIES Many of our trophies are named after persons who have given the league distinguished service over the years. The top divisional prize the Senior A Championship is entitled The Peter Cookson Trophy in memory of his dedicated involvement of a grand total of 50 seasons as a player, referee and League Official in the Yorkshire Old Boys League. The League has three knockout cups that all teams compete in all similarly named in recognition of individuals who had managed some tremendous work for their clubs and the league. Formerly known as The Old Boys Cup, first teams compete for the Terry Marflitt Trophy re-named in 1990 to honour his service of over 40 seasons with Old Centralians and the league. Reserve sides compete for The Hancock Cup, originally known as The White Trophy, in remembrance of long serving league member and Old Collegian David Hancock. 3rd and 4th teams compete for The Hodgson Cup, previously The Barr Cup, so named recognising the service to the league and arduous work put in by Laurie Hodgson for many seasons with Old Cockburnians 1 YAML Season

2 THE YORKSHIRE OLD BOYS SHIELD The Shield is a knockout competition commenced in the 1950 s. This invitation trophy brought together clubs within leagues of a similar standard around the old Yorkshire boundaries. Our league has had quite a few different clubs lifting the trophy but the most successful club of the last 20 years have been Hullbased side Malet Lambert Youth Centre F.C. Season 2016/17 so one of clubs from outside of the League lift the trophy namely St Mary s Yarm LEAGUE FACTS AND STATISTICS THE SEASONS In the league s infancy the seasons were naturally short, by comparison to those of today, starting in October and ending earlier the following year. There have been 2 incomplete seasons. These occurred in 1965/66 & 1978/79, when due to extremely bad winters (teams at times not playing at all for 8 weeks) it was impossible to play all the league fixtures. Therefore, end of season tables were decided on a percentage basis by assessing points gained to games played for all teams. SHARED CUPS On 5 separate occasions, cups have been shared by the 2 competing finalists. Years ago, no rules existed for penalty shoot-outs, or similar, so, following 3 drawn games in the final, the season closed and the teams held the cup for half a season each. OTHER INTERSTING FACTS Having researched the record books concerning results, the most remarkable in history of the League include Highest aggregate score Division 4, Old Batelians III 20 v Shadwell O.B III 4, season, 2010/11 Highest scoring draw Division 2, Old Cockburnians 9 v Old Rastrickians 9, season 1955/56. Highest ever margin of victory: occurred in a 1992/93 1st team cup fixture when Senior Division. A side, Trinity & A.S College, defeated t Division 4 club Woodkirk O.B. by 21 goals to 0. ACHIEVEMENTS BY CLUBS There have been many individual club s achievements, in addition to the previously mentioned successes of Barnsley, TASC & Cockburnians Leeds Medics & Dentists can boast to be the only club ever to, have won all 3 of our domestic knockout cups in the same season, (season ) and 2 years later, again all cup winners with the reserves & 3rds domestic cup winners whilst 1st team were League Champions. However, the 2 greatest ever club achievements in one single season are held by the first team sides of clubs Alwoodley F.C. and Stanningley Old Boys. Alwoodley in 2009/10, in their 1st season in the top flight, won the Senior A title and became the first ever Yorkshire Old Boys side to win the prestigious Leeds & District F.A. Senior Challenge Cup. Stanningley O.B. created further league history in when they won all the major 1st team cups available in one single season., namely Terry Marflitt Trophy and The Yorkshire Old Boys Shield were followed by ending the year as Senior Division A Champions. 2 YAML Season

3 LEAGUE REPRESENTATIVE FOOTBALL The League has competed in fixtures against other leagues representative sides. JERRY HILDERSLEY TROPHY v Amateur Football Combination Our first recorded, such game, was way back in 1958 when we accepted an invitation to play against the London Old Boys League (now known as the Amateur Football Combination) Representative side. A return game the following season in the north was an enormous success and is now an established annual fixture the complete record in this fixture being: Our visit to London this year saw us bring back the Jerry Hildersley Trophy in emphatic style defeating our foes from London 8-1, our young team were in devastating form and recorded a memorable victory under the management team of Steve.Ledger and Tony Lewis. PLAYED WON DRAWN LOST FOR AGAINST ERNIE FAIRCLOUGH MEMORIAL TROPHY v York Minister Engineering League A fixture that has been on and off for a few years and re-kindled in 2010/11. The record since that date is PLAYED WON DRAWN LOST FOR AGAINST Another triumph for the Representative side reclaiming the trophy with goal to nil victory in December THE FA INTER-LEAGUE CUP In 2009, we entered a national knockout competition in which we compete against other leagues from around the country. 15 THE THORNTON TROPHY The Thornton Trophy has been in existence since 1960 and there are now generations of players with clubs in our league who do not know what the Trophy represents or whose memory it perpetuates. Eric Thornton died at the age of 42 in February He played his last game for Old Collegians in December 1959, and then spent the last month of his life in hospital. For over twenty years he had played for Collegians, nearly always in the first team when the club was one of the strongest in the League. He was a player of notable talent and, in fact, had resisted the lure of professional football with Town when he was younger. He played for the Old Boys Representative team for several years. But to everyone who knew him (and that meant almost every first-team player in the League between 1938 and 1960) he represented the ideal amateur club player. He regularly travelled twenty miles for home games, was always to be relied on to play, he was entirely selfless when his club asked for his services. He was a pleasant companion off the field, a perfect gentleman on the field, never losing his temper or control and he committed only the minor infringements. He was well-liked and respected throughout the League; veteran opponents always asked about him when playing Collegian teams. This, then, was Eric Thornton. On his death, his club asked that they might present a Trophy to the League to be presented to a player who had given outstanding service to his club and the League. 17 THE SHAUN TURNER TROPHY Shaun Turner died on 6th November 2000, the day after celebrating his 26th birthday. He had been the player manager of Trinity and All Saints College Old Boys for the previous three seasons. When he took over the club Trinity was on the verge of collapse. Shaun rejuvenated the club, attracting fresh players, making it more professional on and off the field and developing team spirit through building a strong social scene. There was no magic formula, it took hard work, enthusiasm, commitment and passion, but, mostly, it was Shaun s love of the game that inspired others. The Shaun Turner Trophy is not an award for football excellence but a chance to honour and celebrate those people who put in countless hours of effort and endeavour into football in the Yorkshire Amateur League. People who are tireless in their efforts to improve their clubs, without whom local football would not exist. Please see below list of winners of this award G. 18 RESPECT & HOSPITALITY One of the legacies of our outgoing CEO Tony Gaunt was to introduce awards associated with both hospitality, the provision of post-match refreshments and social interaction between clubs and officials (are we are keen to promote all our clubs to provide and opposition to embrace) and respect for opposition and recognition of fair play based upon the requirements and criteria set out on Full Time. The first award was presented for hospitality in season with Morley Town being the first recipient of the trophy. The respect trophy was introduced the following year with Leeds Medics & Dentists IV achieving this accolade.
