2 2005 Season Preview Quest For Back-to-Back Titles Hopkins has won five conference championships, all in even-numbered years and never in back-to-back seasons. Can the Blue Jays defend their Centennial Conference title in 2005? T he Blue Jays return seven starters and enter the season ranked first in the Centennial Conference and 11th in the nation, which is exactly where they left off last November. But the 2005 season, and whether Johns Hopkins can clinch a consecutive Centennial Conference title for the first time in history, will be decided more by what is new than by what remains the same from last year. The major changes to the team include a new goalkeeper who will replace All-America Gary Kane, Jr., eight rookies, and a renovated playing surface at the Blue Jays Homewood Field. Last year s team was defined by defense and, more specifically, Kane, Jr., who boasted a 0.25 goals against average throughout all 20 games. The Blue Jays have two junior goalkeepers, Dan Coble and Ryan Bradley, who will compete for the starting position. Fortunately, the 2004 defense that allowed just six goals all season relied on much more than just its keeper. Jeff Grosser returns for his senior year after earning first-team allconference and allregion honors last season. However, the Blue Jays must fill the void left by the graduation of Chris Brown, another all-conference and all-region back. Smith intends to move several returnees as well as newcomers to defensive positions at the start of the season. With a new Sportexe Momentum 151 playing surface at Homewood Field, Smith is waiting to see how the returnees will adjust, and he will base many starting decisions on such adjustments. One of the biggest strengths of this year s team is its experience, with eight seniors and seven juniors leading the 2005 campaign. Two-time captain Traver Davis started all 20 games last year, as did leading scorer Steve Read, who tallied eight goals and two assists and earned firstteam all-conference honors. Two players expected to shine this year are senior Manbaj Gill and junior Ben McAbee. Gill transferred to Hopkins in 2003 and immediately earned a starting role in the midfield. Last year, he was the team s secondhighest scorer with three goals, five assists, one game-winner, and the tying goal in the 88th minute against Elizabethtown in the NCAA Second Round. Gill earned 2004 firstteam all-conference and all-region honors and was named second-team All-America. McAbee, who scored four goals and four assists as a freshman midfielder, returns to the lineup after missing all of last season with an injury. In total, the Blue Jays return eight players who started at least half of the games last year. Junior Blaine Phillips returns on defense after starting 12 of 16 games in Junior Joe Pinero played all 20 games, started 10, and finished fourth in scoring with four goals and two assists. Senior Adam Simon started 11 games and tallied two goals and two assists despite missing six games with an injury. Seniors Aaron Blynn, Jeremy Jacobson, and Edmond Wybaillie were also consistent starters in 2004 who are expected to contribute even more this year. Blynn started seven of the 16 games he played, and will be relied on defensively to replace Brown. Jacobson started 15 of the 16 games he played, recorded one goal and one assist, and was named to two all-tournament teams in September. Junior Trip Neil and sophomores Brendan Kittredge and Nate Ford also return to add depth to the squad, but junior Moath Hamzeh, Steve Read who started 11 games last year, will sit this season out after injuring his knee in the offseason. This year s class of newcomers is one of the largest and most talented in the program s history. According to Smith, several freshman can step right into the starting lineup. Connecticut native Matthew Carlson and New Jersey standout Ethan Mulligan highlight the group of 14 rookies. Carlson played at Loomis Chaffee prep school, where his team won the Founders League and WNEPSSA championships and was the NEPSSA runner up. A midfielder, Carlson earned all-star honors by both the WNEPSSA and NEPSSA. Mulligan was a second-team all-state player for Kearny High School, where he helped the team win two state championships. The defender was also selected for the Y-League ODP national pool. Nicolas Gauna was an all-state and all-midwest midfielder for Evanston High School in Illinois, and coming to Johns Hopkins from across the country is Malcom Stewart, the team MVP and an all-league selection from California s Montgomery High School. The Blue Jays open their season by hosting the annual Dr. Al Tucci Kickoff Classic at Homewood Field. On September 3, Johns Hopkins will face the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, which received votes in the national preseason poll after finishing 19-3 last year. The next day, the Blue Jays meet Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the final game of the tournament. Claremont returns seven starters from its 2004 team that finished Hopkins will also play local opponent Saint Mary s College and will travel to Maryville, Tennessee, for a two-day tournament before starting Centennial Conference play against Muhlenberg on September 17. The Mules were picked second in the preseason conference poll and should be one of Hopkins toughest Centennial opponents this season. In last year s conference tournament semifinals, the two teams battled to a scoreless tie before Hopkins advanced on penalty kicks. After Muhlenberg, the Blue Jays host their instate rival McDaniel, which finished second in the conference with a 1-0 loss to Hopkins in the title game last year. In between their next few conference games, the Blue Jays will play some tough non-conference competition, including Drew on September 24, Montclair State on October 5, and Arcadia on October 12. Drew and Montclair State are consistenly among the top regional teams, while Arcadia finished last year and is ranked 17th in the preseason national poll. The non-conference competition should prepare the Blue Jays for the Centennial tournament, where their goal is to be seeded first with a second straight undefeated conference record. After Hopkins preseason workouts, Smith has no doubt his team has the potential to do what no other Blue Jay men s soccer team has done win back-to-back Centennial Conference titles and advance deep into the NCAA tournament. 2

Inheriting a team that had won only three games and scored just 12 goals in the prior season, Smith guided the 1993 Blue Jays to their first winning record in three years. The next year, which was thought to be a rebuilding year, Hopkins started 10-0 and set a school record with 79 goals before losing in overtime of the NCAA Quarterfinals. Smith led the 1999 Blue Jays to their sixth straight 15-win season and to the ECAC Championship, and he then guided the 2000 team to a record and another NCAA tournament berth. In 2001, the Blue Jays went 17-3 with 9-0 mark in the league and won the ECAC Championship for the second time in three seasons. The Blue Jays again went 17-3 in 2002, winning the conference and advancing to the NCAA tournament. In 2003, Hopkins tied the school record for wins in a season by finishing and winning another ECAC Championship in the process. Smith has now guided JHU to ten consecutive 15-win seasons after Hopkins attained the mark just once in the program s first 59 years. A 1988 graduate of Towson University, where he was the Tigers leading scorer twice and the team MVP his senior year, Smith later spent two years as the first assistant coach at his alma mater before moving to Hopkins. 10 2004 Season Review Defense Wins Championships Johns Hopkins wins Centennial Conference title and advances to NCAA Sectional Semifinals behind its national record-breaking defense T he Blue Jay men s soccer tradition of success under head coach Matt Smith continues. In 2004, Johns Hopkins went and advanced to the third round of t h e NCAA tournament while rewriting the program s all-time record book. The Blue Jays finished with the best winning percentage (.900) and fewest number of losses in school history, and set the program records for winning streak (19), unbeaten streak (22) and best start to a season (16-0). Manbaj Gill The story of the year was defense, as Johns Hopkins allowed just six goals, won eight 1-0 decisions and never allowed more than one goal in a game. The Blue Jays finished second in the nation in team goals against average with a 0.30 mark, the eighth best average all-time in NCAA Division III. With 14 shutouts, which t i e d t h e s c h o o l record, J H U s shutout percenta g e o f 0.70 was third in the nation and the second best ever by the Blue Jays. Anchoring this stingy defense was senior first-team All-America pick Gary Kane, Jr., who started all 20 games and allowed just five goals in 1,810 minutes between the posts. His 0.25 goals against average was a school and conference record, second in the nation in 2004 and fourth all-time for the NCAA Division III single-season record. But he couldn t do it alone. Kane, Jr. played behind a line of defenders that included senior Chris Brown and junior Jeff Grosser, both first-team All-Centennial Conference picks and two of the three backs selected as first-team NSCAA All-Region in the Mid-Atlantic. While the defense was their strength, the Blue Jays held their own offensively behind junior Steve Read s team-high 18 points and junior Manbaj Gill s play in the midfield. Gill, a 2004 second-team All-America selection, recorded three goals, five assists, one game-winner, and the tying goal in the 88th minute against Elizabethtown in the NCAA Second Round, where Hopkins eventually advanced on penalty kicks. Read added two assists to his conference-high eight goals, and finished second in the conference in goals per game (.444) and points per game (1.00). Read and Gill were both named first-team All-Centennial Conference while Gill also earned first-team All-Region honors. Senior Doug Pollack added five goals, all game-winners, en route to second-team all-conference honors while junior Edmond Wybaillie tallied a teamhigh six assists. The Blue Jays opened their season hosting the Dr. Al Tucci Kickoff Classic, where they registered three straight shutouts over William Paterson (2-0), Grove City (1-0), and Washington & Jefferson (2-0). Sophomore Moath Hamzeh scored the game-winner against Grove City to earn the tournament s offensive MVP award while Grosser was named the defensive MVP. Juniors Traver Davis and Jeremy Jacobson along with Wybaillie and Pollack were selected to the alltournament team. Hopkins allowed its first goal of the season a week later but Read scored twice and sophomore Joe Pinero tallied another for a 3-1 Blue Jay win over Guilford at the JHU Alumni Invitational. The next day Hamzeh netted his second goal of the year and the Hopkins defense did the rest in a 1-0 win over Johnson & Wales. Kane, Jr., who did not allow a goal in the tournament, was named the defensive MVP while Jacobson, Read, and Gill were all-tournament selections. The 5-0 start, which included four shutouts, helped Johns Hopkins jump seven spots from #18 to #11 in the NSCAA/adidas Division III National Poll. Unranked in the preseason, the Blue Jays were also second in the Week 3 Mid-Atlantic Region Poll behind Messiah. Johns Hopkins then kicked off its Centennial Conference season against Muhlenberg in the Blue Jays sixth home game of the year. Hopkins was the preseason favorite to win the Centennial but the Mules, the 2003 conference champion, were right behind with just one fewer point in the poll than the Blue Jays. In a rematch of the 2003 conference final, Read scored once and Kane, Jr. let in his first goal of the season for a 1-1 score at halftime. Neither team scored in the second period but Hopkins put the game away early in overtime when junior Adam Simon scored just 29 seconds in. The quality win pushed Johns Hopkins to a firstplace regional ranking and #4 spot in the national poll on September 21. The Blue Jays then chalked up four straight shutouts a 1-0 win over 2003 national champion Drew and three 2-0 conference wins over the McDaniel, Dickinson, and Haverford to jump another two spots to #2, tying the highest Hopkins had ever been ranked in the 70-year history of the men s soccer program. 11 2004 Season Review Gary Kane, Jr. wins over McDaniel and Drew to earn the Centennial Conference Player of the Week honor. With a 2-0 win at Haverford, the Blue Jays improved to 10-0 and tied the school record for wins to start a season, which was set in Pinero recorded a goal and an assist and Pollack added a goal in the win, which gave Hopkins its fourth conference victory and fourth straight shutout. The shutout streak ended but the winning streak did not as Hopkins traveled to Lincoln for an intense non-conference matchup and defeated the Lions 3-1. Gill, G ro s s e r and Pinero all scored in a game that saw 21 Lincoln fouls and was cut short after violence erupted from a Lion red card in the 71st minute. The 11th-straight win broke the school record for best start and helped Hopkins remain at #2 in the national poll behind Trinity (Texas), which held the top spot since preseason. The Blue Jays then won four 1-0 conference games over Gettysburg, Swarthmore, Ursinus, and Washington to clinch the top seed in the Centennial Conference Tournament. A 2-1 win over Franklin & Marshall in its final regularseason game of the year gave Hopkins a perfect 16-0 overall record and 9-0 conference mark while extending its winning streak to 19 games dating back to the 2003 season. The undefeated regular season was the first in Blue Jay men s soccer history. Pollack was named the Centennial Conference Player of the Week after scoring the game-winning goals against both Washington and F&M. Hosting the conference tournament the following weekend, Johns Hopkins met fifthseeded Muhlenberg in a rematch of the Blue Jays tightest game of the year. This one was even closer as neither team scored in 110 minutes of regulation and two overtimes, thus forcing penalty kicks. Fortunately, Hopkins had arguably the best keeper in all of Division III along with a slew of strong and accurate shooters. Junior Steve Walsh, Grosser and Gill all converted their penalty kicks while Kane, Jr. saved two and forced another one wide, helping the Blue Jays advance 3-0. In the championship game a day later, Pinero scored with 15 minutes remaining and Hopkins recorded its 14th shutout of the year in a 1-0 win over McDaniel. The Blue Jays fifth Centennial Conference Championship gave them an automatic berth in the NCAA tournament and kept them at No. 2 in the national poll for the seventh consecutive week. Johns Hopkins received a first-round bye and met Elizabethtown, the 2-0 winner over Drew in the first round of the NCAAs, on the road in the second round. For the second time in their last three games, the Blue Jays took their opponent into penalty kicks and advanced. But before that, Elizabethtown s leading scorer Brian Healy tallied his 12th goal of the year at 63:42 and Hopkins found itself trailing for the first time all season. With 1:15 remaining in regulation, Walsh set up Gill for a 20-yard shot that zipped past the keeper and forced the game into overtime, tied 1-1. Pollack and Walsh converted the first two Johns Hopkins penalty kicks before Elizabethtown tied it, 2-2. Grosser, Gill and Hamzeh then nailed three straight and Kane, Jr. held off Etown for the 5-3 Hopkins advantage. The #2 Blue Jays would travel to #3 Salisbury in a state showdown the following weekend. Tied in their last five meetings, Johns Hopkins and Salisbury both entered the NCAA Sectional game with undefeated season records on the line. The Seagulls out-shot the Blue Jays 6-3 in the first half but Kane, Jr. made three early saves for a 0-0 score at the half. Salisbury s Bill Whittington, averaging just under a goal per game, scored his 16th goal of the year at 67:58, handing Johns Hopkins the 1-0 season-ending loss. The goal was just the fifth allowed by Kane, Jr. and the sixth by Hopkins in its 20 games. Salisbury eventually lost 1-0 to Messiah, which went on to win the NCAA Championship. 15 Athletic Facilities Homewood Gets A Facelift A fter the crowds cleared from Homewood Field following Johns Hopkins 2005 NCAA Men s Lacrosse Championship season, and just days after the year s commencement, construction crews arrived and worked throughout the summer to resurface and revamp the historic stadium. The most outstanding improvement was the replacement of the astroturf with a state-of-the-art playing surface, Sportexe Momentum 151, which is the same surface used by the NFL s Baltimore Ravens and numerous other professional, college, and high school teams. A committee of Johns Hopkins athletic administrators and coaches selected the surface after comparing it with several others. The infill system of sand and shredded tires serves as the base, and synthetic grass-like fibers provide the closest option to a natural grass field. An identical surface was installed on the varsity practice field. The stadium s facelift also included the widening of the playing surface, the elimination of the track surrounding it, an increase in the size of the walkways around the field, and the addition of flag poles for the the official class flags that hang in the stadium. The widening of the playing surface will allow the successful Johns Hopkins men s and women s soccer teams to be considered as hosts for games in the NCAA tournament. Future plans for Homewood Field include additional stands in the end-zone area opposite the scoreboard, permanent concessions and merchandising stands, and banners commemorating the championships won by Hopkins teams that play at Homewood Field (football, men s soccer, women s soccer, field hockey, men s lacrosse, and women s lacrosse). A new playing surface, Sportex Momentum 151, was installed on Homewood Field (above) and on the Johns Hopkins varsity practice field (below) during the 2005 summer. The surface combines natural sand, tires, and synthetic grass. Last summer, the varsity weight room (above) received new training equipment, as well as new air conditioning, lights, painting, and a new ceiling and floor. While some construction crews worked outside at Homewood Field, others were busy indoors in the Johns Hopkins varsity weight room. The weight room received new equipment, including Power Lift racks, Sorinex benches, Ivanko plates and dumbells, Woodway treadmills, and HammerStrengh machines. A new ceiling and floor, along with new lights, painting, and air conditioning, were among the additional enhancements to the varsity weight room. Corresponding with the physical changes were improvements in the weight room operating hours and accessibility. The Johns Hopkins Athletics and Recreation Department organized a new operating schedule to accomodate varsity team and individual workouts, while changing the locks and hiring more monitors to maintain the safety and condition of the room. 15
