1 Sussex Pétanque Rules for Regional Qualifiers 2018 There will be 3 qualifying rounds :- Round 1 Sunday 15 th April Crowborough Social Club Round 2 Sunday 20 th May Hastings (White Rock Gardens) Round 3 Sunday 3 rd June Brighton & Hove PC Eligibility Only Triples Teams of 3 or 4 players are allowed All players must be Sussex/Pétanque England 2018 licence holders Teams can be formed from any Sussex players irrespective of Club or Independent membership, be of any gender and comprise of adults and juniors Junior Teams can take part in the Sussex Qualifiers all Junior players must be aged under 18 on 31 st December 2018 All teams & players should be available to play at Pétanque England s Inter-Regional championships held over the weekend of 15 th & 16 th September Entry & Registration Entry fee is 5 per team member for each qualifying round (Junior Teams have free entry) Teams are encouraged to pre-register for each round of the qualifiers using the flyer / application form which will be distributed before each round Teams are also encouraged to pre-pay for all 3 Sussex Qualifiers and as an incentive each player will be charged a reduced total fee of 10 (saving 5 per player) at the 1 st Round. Any other players participating after the 1 st Round will be charged 5 per qualifier. For each qualifier Registration will be open from 9.30am and close at 9.50am Players must be present and register together as the team before registration closes Players must present a valid Sussex/Pétanque England license, including a recent photo of the holder not defaced in any way to the Competition Organisers at registration. A valid licence without a photo will only be accepted if accompanied by photo-id of the holder (e.g. Passport or Driving Licence) The Competition Organisers and the Sussex Management Committee (Sussex MC) reserve the right to refuse entry to any player or team not meeting the Eligibility or Registration requirements The Competition Organisers and Sussex MC reserve the right to refuse entry to teams entering for the first time at Round 2 or 3 of the Qualifiers Team Rules Each player within a team of 4 must register in at least one of the three Sussex Qualifiers Teams of 4 players can play any combination of 3 players for the duration of each game Within each game a team of 4 can make a substitution once and this must be declared to the opposing team before an end of play commences During the qualifying series players having played for one team cannot play for another team SQ Rules 2018 / SXP Format 2018v1 Page 1

2 If a team disbands during the qualifiers, a player from the disbanded team may join an existing team as a 4 th player (as long as only 3 players have previously played for the existing team) Disbanded team players may also form completely new teams to take part in the remainder of the qualifiers subject to the approval of the Sussex MC. Disbanded teams will have all points previously accumulated forfeited General Regulations for play will be the Official International Rules of the game of Pétanque, any variations set out in these Rules for Sussex Qualifiers 2018 or declared at the start of each Qualifier The Sussex MC will be responsible for the organisation of the Qualifiers and appoint an Organiser for each Players and officials to abide by Pétanque England s Member s Code of Conduct Players and officials to respect and comply with any venue regulations The draw will take place immediately after the close of registration Play will commence as soon as possible after the completion of the draw and announcements The Competition Organisers may designate terrain pistes for play else the team winning the toss can decide to play on any available piste An Umpire (or Umpires) will be announced at each qualifying round at the start of the day s proceedings. The Umpire s decision is final and Sussex Petanque will not tolerate any argument or abuse towards an Umpire Competition Format 1) Round 1 Ranking There will be no ranking of teams in the 1 st Round 2) Round 1 Draw Wherever possible teams will be drawn into Morning Leagues of 4 teams Depending on the number of teams entering there may be a need for one league of 3, 5 or 6 teams when the total number of teams entering is not devisable by 4 All teams will be randomly drawn across the Leagues 3) Morning Leagues There will be a maximum of 3 rounds of play in the morning In Leagues of 4 teams, each team will play each other once (3 games each, over 3 rounds) If a League of 3 teams is necessary, each team will play each other once (2 games each over 3 rounds) and each team will receive a *bye win of 13-7 If a League of 5 teams is necessary, in each round one team will have a bye win of This will mean that 2 teams will play three games and 3 teams will play two games having a *bye win of 13-7 points each If a League of 6 teams is necessary, there will be three rounds of games with each team playing 3 games * In the event of it being necessary to have a league of 3 or 5 teams the Competition Organisers will standardise the final results by the provision of granting bye wins so that there is parity between all leagues and teams in Art 4) & 5) SQ Rules 2018 / SXP Format 2018v1 Page 2

3 4) League standings will be calculated in the following order :- Number of wins (including any bye wins) Points difference Match results between any tied teams (where played) Total points for 5) 8 teams go through to a Main Seeded Rolling Knockout competition in the afternoon session :- a) When there are 3 leagues in total the 1 st and 2 nd placed teams will go through plus the next 2 best performing teams using the order in Art 4) to determine those teams b) When there are 4 leagues in total the 1 st and 2 nd placed teams will go through c) When there are 5 leagues in total the 1 st placed teams will go through plus the next 3 best performing teams using the order in Art 4) to determine those teams 6) The remaining teams will go through to an afternoon Plate Competition to determine places 9 th and onwards 7) Main Seeded Rolling Knockout - The 8 qualifying teams will be seeded as follows :- The 1 st placed teams will take the highest seedings as determined by the order in Art 4) When all 2 nd placed teams qualify, as in Art 5) a) & b), these teams will take the next highest seedings as determined by the order in Art 4) When the next best performing teams qualify, as in Art 5) a) & c), these teams will take the next highest seedings as determined by the order in Art 4) 8) The 1 st round draw for the Main Seeded Rolling Knockout will be as follows :- Game 1 Seed 1 v Seed 8 Game 2 Seed 4 v Seed 5 Game 3 Seed 3 v Seed 6 Game 4 Seed 2 v Seed 7 The 2 nd round draw will be as follows :- Game 5 Winner Game 1 v Winner Game 2 Game 6 Winner Game 3 v Winner Game 4 Game 7 Loser Game 1 v Loser Game 2 Game 8 Loser Game 3 v Loser Game 4 The 3 rd round draw will be as follows :- Game 9 Winner Game 5 v Winner Game 6 Game 10 Loser Game 5 v Loser Game 6 Game 11 Winner Game 7 v Winner Game 8 Game 12 Loser Game 7 v Loser Game 8 9) The top 8 places are determined as follows :- 1 st - Winner of Game 9 2 nd - Loser of Game 9 3 rd - Winner of Game 10 4 th - Loser of Game 10 5 th - Winner of Game 11 6 th - Loser of Game 11 7 th - Winner of Game 12 8 th - Loser of Game 12 10) Plate Competition the format will be determined on the day according to the number of teams remaining that go through to the Plate. The format maybe a snake, round robin or seeded knockout. There will be a maximum of 3 games each. The final positions from 9 th SQ Rules 2018 / SXP Format 2018v1 Page 3

5 In accordance with the number of Leagues required, the same number of teams in the ranking from Art 18) will be randomly drawn across each of the Leagues. For example if 4 Leagues are required then the teams ranked 1 through to 4 will be randomly drawn across the 4 leagues Then the next number of teams in the ranking in Art 18), equal to the number of Leagues, will be randomly drawn across the Leagues This draw format continues until the inclusion of unranked teams which will be randomly drawn across the remaining positions in the Leagues 20) The format of play will then follow Art 3) through to Art 10) 21) Points will be awarded for Round 3 according to the final placings in Art 11) 22) Points from Rounds 1, 2 & 3 will then be accumulated to provide final positions 23) In the event of teams being tied on points at Art 22) positions will be decided by: Number of wins (including any bye wins) over the three rounds Points difference over the three rounds Match results between the tied teams (where played) Total points for - over the three rounds 24) Teams will be ranked according to their final positions gained in Art 22) & 23) Sussex Inter-Regional Championship, Challenge Tournament and Junior Teams A) Sussex Junior Team The highest finishing all Junior Team, in accordance with Art 24), will be invited to represent Sussex at the Junior Inter-Regional Championships Sussex MC reserve the right to refuse the highest finishing all Junior team of representation at the Inter-Regional Championships or Challenge Tournament B) Sussex Inter-Regional Squad The top 8 ranked teams, in accordance with Art 24), and excluding the Sussex Junior Team at A), will be invited to represent Sussex at the Inter-Regional Championships These teams will be seeded 1 through to 8, according to their respective final positions C) Sussex Challenge Tournament Squad The next best 4 ranked teams, in accordance with Art 24), and excluding the Sussex Junior Team at A), will be invited to represent Sussex at the Challenge Tournament These teams will be seeded 1 through to 4, according to their respective final positions D) Reserve Teams The remaining ranked teams, in accordance with Art 24), and excluding the Sussex Junior Team at A), will be kept as Reserve Teams Teams withdrawing after qualification Team withdrawing from B) Sussex Inter-Regional Squad If a qualifying team from the Sussex Inter-Regional Squad withdraws in advance of the Championships, then the team/s below them will move up one position in the seedings SQ Rules 2018 / SXP Format 2018v1 Page 5

6 The 1 st seeded team from the Challenge Tournament Squad C) will move up to be the 8 th seed in the Inter-Regional Squad B) The highest ranked team from Reserve Teams D) will be invited to take up the remaining Challenge Tournament position If they cannot partake then the next highest ranked team from Reserve Teams D) will be offered the position and so on until the position is filled Team withdrawing from C) Sussex Challenge Tournament Squad If a qualifying team from the Challenge Tournament Squad withdraws in advance of the Championships, then the team/s below them in the seedings will move up one position The highest ranked team from Reserve Teams D) will be invited to take up the remaining Challenge Tournament position If they cannot partake then the next highest ranked team from Reserve Teams D) will be offered the position and so on until the position is filled In the event of there not being an available Reserve Team to fill a vacant Challenge Tournament position the Sussex MC reserve the right to create a team. This would ensure the 3 qualifying Challenge Tournament teams do not miss out on the opportunity of competing and for Sussex to fully participate in the Challenge Tournament Player withdrawals after qualification If a player withdraws from a Team of 4 after qualification that team can choose to play as a Team of 3, or request a Replacement Player to be sanctioned by the Sussex MC If a player withdraws from a Team of 3 after qualification, they may request a Replacement Player to be sanctioned by the Sussex MC A Replacement Player must have played in at least one qualifier for another team that did not qualify If a Junior player withdraws from the Junior Team after qualification, they may request a Junior Replacement Player to be sanctioned by the Sussex MC A Junior Replacement Player should have played in at least one qualifier for another team that did not qualify, though Sussex MC reserve the right to bring in any Junior Replacement Player to ensure Sussex has a Junior Inter-Regional Team SQ Rules 2018 / SXP Format 2018v1 Page 6
