The 10 opponents so far this fall have combined for a mark (.738), with eight of them being ranked in the top-25 at some point this fall. - Prior to today s game, the Spiders will honor their 18 seniors who will be playing in the final collegiate game: Porter Abell, John Chereson, Brendan Coniker, Madison Day, DJ Helkowski, Garrett Hudson, Lee Johnson, Jarriel Jordan, Patrick Kliebert, Graham Latham, Kyle Lauletta, Alex Light, Trey Lucas, Tafon Mainsah, Trey Moore, Dashon Tibbs, Brandon Waller and Marius Young. - A win today would move this senior class into a tie with last year s class (35 total wins) for third-place all-time on the wins last in the 133 year history of the program. - Richmond s defense has been flexing its muscles over the past three weeks, holding the past three opponents to just 15.7 points per game and yards of total offense, including a dominating 22-0 shutout at Villanova on Nov Senior QB Kyle Lauletta has been the story for Richmond this season, entering today as one of the leading candidates for this year s Walter Payton Award. Lauletta currently leads the country in passing passing yards with 3,516 and total offense (359.8 ypg) and top-five in passing TDs (4th - 27) and points responsible for (5th - 180). - After setting the single-season program record with his 27th passing TD of the year last week, Lauletta will aim to become the program s single-season record holder in passing yards, needing just 293 to pass Michael Strauss (3,808 in 2013). (.565) Last Playoff Appearance (FCS Quartefinals) Wide Receiver U? Entering the season finale, Richmond is the only FCS school and one of just two Division I programs with three receivers over 800 yards receiving on the year. (West Virginia also has three). Cortrelle Simpson (898 yds), Dejon Brissett (896) and Tyler Wilkins (853) ranked in the CAA and all in the top-25 nationally. Wilkins and Simpson (Brisset out due to injury) have the chance to become the first set of teammates to have a 1,000 yard season in the same year since Reggie Diggs and Brian Brown in K x 3 Last week s win over Villanova pushed QB Kyle Lauletta past 3,000 yards for a third straight season, an accomplishment that has never been done in Spider history. Prior to Lauletta, only one other Spider had ever thrown for 3,000 yards in a season (Michael Strauss, ,808). Sack Attack The Spiders defense has been torturing opposing QBs all year long, ranking seventh nationally and second in the CAA with 3.3 sacks per game with nine different players registering a sack. With 33 sacks in 10 games, this year s team has the most sacks per game in program history. The overall record is 41 set by the 2005 squad (14 games). Leading the way is redshirt junior Andrew Clyde leads the CAA and ranks ninth nationally with 8.5 sacks on the year. With his sack last week at Villanova, Clyde moved intop the top-10 in single-season (eighth tied at 8.5) sacks list and career sacks (10th ). No Fly Zone FCS QBs in last 20 years with three straight 3,000-yard seasons: The Spiders have been ball-hawking this season with 12 INTs through the first nine games. That comes as no surprise as Richmond has now picked off at least one pass in 20 of its past 26 games dating back to the 2015 season. Dominic Randolph, Holy Cross ( ) Ricky Santos, UNH ( ) K.D. 5 No Stranger To The Capital Cup While it s his first Capital Cup as a head coach, Russ Huesman is no stranger to the Oldest Rivalry in the South, serving as an assistant for the game for 19 games ( at W&M, at Richmond). Huesman has had quite a bit of success in this rivalry, with his side 16 of the 19 meetings (12-2 while at W&M, 4-1 at Richmond). Quick Strike With three receivers ranking in the top-five in the CAA in receiving and the nation s top QB statisticaly, the Spiders have the ability to score and score quickly. Be Sure To Pack Extra Light Bulbs Richmond s 31.3 points per game this year currently ranks fifth in program history. The Spiders can pack quite a punch themselves, scoring 30-plus points in 21 of the past 37 games. In those games, the Spiders are High Five For #5 In addition to his many records, Kyle Lauletta has etched his name among the best to ever be under center for the Spiders. Did You Know? Total TD Drives: 39 TD Drives Under 1:00: 8 TD Drives Under 2:00: 18 TD Drives Under 2:30: 21 Today will be his 36th start under center for the Spiders, which places him for third all-time in program history behind Eric Ward (52) and Bob Bleier (43) Lauletta currently has 23 wins as the Spiders starting QB, which is tied for second all-time behind Ward (40) and tied with Bleier (23). Lauletta is as a starter (.657 winning percentage). - Brandon Waller spent 10 days doing non-profit work in Myanmar - Griffin Trau spent a second straight summer abroad,- most recently studying in the Czech Republic after spending the 2016 summer as an intern with the New Zealand Institute of Sport on their marketing and development team. - Marius Young is the President of FAME, an organization that the Richmond Football alumni set up to benefit area youth. He is also an acapella singer on campus. - Justin Rubin, Dale Matthews, Jacob Roberson, Tyler Cole and Joshua Anderson spent almost eight weeks this past summer studying abroad in Richmond s studyabroad program for student-athletes in Sevilla, Spain. - Tafon Mainsah didn t start playing football until his junior year in high school when his family moved to Charlotte from Wichita, Kansas. He had played soccer his entire life. - Jarriel Jordan was selected to participate in the NCAA Career in Sports Forum with 280-plus other student-athletes from around the country. - Thanks to increased funding, the Spiders spent the entire summer on campus training as a team together through summer classes, internships and researdch projects. We ll Take That... Richmond s defense has been an opportunistic one this fall, forcing a turnover in nine of the 10 games this season. With 21 forced turnovers this fall, the Spiders rank third in the conference and have atleast one turnover in 29 of its past 35 games. Two more forced turnovers today would secure a third straight season of at least 2.0 turnovers per game average. Hitting on 21 Dating back to the 2013 season, the Spiders have won 23 of the past 24 contests when holding their opponents to 21 points or fewer, including 11 straight victories when doing so. 7 RUSS HUESMAN HEAD COACH First Season Chattanooga, 1983 With nearly 20 years of coaching in the Colonial Athletic Association, Russ Huesman brings a wealth of experience to his new job as the head coach of the University of Richmond football team. Huesman returns to the Spiders, where he was the defensive coordinator on the 2008 National Championship team, after eight tremendously successful seasons at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga. The three-time SoCon Coach of the Year and three-time National Coach of the Year Award finalist was introduced as the program s 36th Head Coach in December. We are delighted with the outstanding job Director of Athletics Keith Gill has done in bringing to Richmond such a skilled and accomplished coach as Russ Huesman, said University of Richmond President, Ronald A. Crutcher. Spiders remember Coach Huesman for the important contribution he made to our national championship season in Under Coach Huesman s leadership, we know that our student athletes will be mentored, inspired, and challenged to continue a winning tradition at the University of Richmond. In his 30-plus years of coaching, Huesman has coached 39 All-Americans and 21 NFL Draft Picks, while being a part of nine conference championships and the 2008 National Championship with the Spiders. I m excited to return to Richmond, a place that my family and I dearly love, for the opportunity to be the head coach of this incredibly successful football program, Huesman said. I m very appreciative of President Crutcher and Keith Gill for putting their belief in me and allowing me this chance to work with such a tremendous group of young men. The commitment of this University and the Athletic Department to its football program is evident through the recent success and I look forward to building on that success at even greater heights. In his eight seasons at UTC, Huesman helped guide the Mocs to a record, including a mark in the past four seasons, which featured three Southern Conference regular season championships. Chattanooga is one of only 10 programs in the country to reach the FCS Playoffs in each of the past three seasons. The Mocs are also just one of four programs in the country to post a playoff win in each of the past three seasons. In the last eight seasons, the Mocs had at least seven players named to the All-SoCon team every year, including a school-record 17 honorees in Prior to Huesman s arrival, the Mocs had not boasted seven members of any All-SoCon team since UTC had 17 All-American honorees and three NFL draft picks with DB Buster Skrine (Cleveland 2011), QB B.J. Coleman (Green Bay 2012) and LB Davis Tull (New Orleans 2015) over the last eight years. This University demands excellence both athletically and academically and we look forward to holding our student-athletes to the highest standard, Huesman said. I believe in this program and am excited to get to work. During his stop in Richmond, Huesman molded the Spiders defensive unit into one of the best in the country. In his final year at Richmond, the national championship season, the Spiders led the country in interceptions and finished in the top-10 in four other defensive categories. Under Huesman s guidance, the Spiders had 23 All-Conference selections, including former NFL standouts Lawrence Sidbury, Jr. and Justin Rogers. Prior to his time with the Spiders, he spent six years at the University of Memphis, where he held several positions, serving as the recruiting coordinator and offensive line coach. He also coached the outside linebackers, tight ends and running backs. As recruiting coordinator, Huesman brought in a Top 50 recruiting class, ranked No. 1 in Conference USA, in It was the first recruiting class ranked in the Top 50 at Memphis. Huesman also coached for 14 years at William & Mary, both with the defense and special teams. During his time in Williamsburg, Huesman coached Steve Christie, a 15-year NFL place kicker with Tampa Bay, Buffalo, San Diego and the New York Giants. His coaching family tree also includes Mike Tomlin, head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Alan Williams, the defensive backs coach for the Indianapolis Colts and Sean McDermott, the defensive coordinator for the Carolina Panthers. All three played for Huesman at William & Mary. Huesman s success on the gridiron is not limited to just coaching as he was a standout player at perennial power Moeller High School in his native town of Cincinnati, Ohio, prior to joining Chattanooga, where he played both football and baseball. During his playing career with the Mocs, he helped UTC to a mark and two Southern Conference championships. Huesman was on the Mocs sidelines for the 1982 season as a student coach, earning his degree in business education in He followed that up with a move to the University of South Carolina as a graduate assistant under Morrison. Huesman and his wife Amy have two daughters, Natalie (20) and Emily (17) and two sons, Jacob (23) and Levi (13).
