While leading the Spiders to the 2008 FCS National Championship, Ward completed 66.0 percent of his passes in the playoffs last season, averaging yards passing with 6 TD passes and one INT. On the ground, he averaged just under 45 yards rushing and two more TDs. He also caught a TD pass -- his first career reception -- as the Spiders opened the scoring in the National Championship with a gadget play fullback pass. His numbers for his seven-game playoff career: 113-of-178 (63.5 pct.) for 1,269 yards, 10 TDs and 3 INTs. Red Zone Success continues to excel in the Red Zone, converting on 15 of its 19 chances (78.9%) on offense, including 12 TDs -- second-most in CAA Football. Defensively, the Spiders rank second in the league by allowing opponents to score just five of nine times (55.6%), including a league-leading three TDs allowed. James Madison has allowed opponents to score 11 of 12 times in the Red Zone this season -- a league-high 91.7%. First Time s A Charm The win over Hofstra saw score six touchdowns in a 47-0 rout of the Pride -- four of the six were by Spiders scoring their first collegiate TDs. True freshman FB Kendall Gaskins scored on a two-yard run, sophomore WR Donte Boston reeled in a dazzling 49-yard pass, junior WR Max Prokell found the end zone with a 23-yard reception and junior FB Ben Keating caught a two-yard pass. Experience In The Trenches The Spiders welcome back four of the five starters from 2008, including senior captain Matt McCracken at LG, who is looking to become UR s first-ever three-time All-America pick. Preseason All-America junior Drew Lachenmayer at C is the only one of the five not a senior. McCracken s streak of 40-consecutive starts is the longest active on the team. The line, which allowed senior RB Justin Rogers to set a careerhigh 152 yards rushing in the VMI win, has allowed just one sack this season -- the Spiders lead the entire FCS in sacks allowed. Grayson Earns Spot On AFCA Good Works Team A junior WR from nearby L.C. Bird High, Kevin Grayson has been named to the 2009 AFCA s Good Works Team, which recognizes college football athletes who excel on and off the field. The award was announced by the AFCA this week and will officially be presented to Grayson, and the rest of the winners, at halftime of the Sugar Bowl in January. Grayson s resume offers several examples of the positive impact he has had on his community. Most notably, the All-Conference wide receiver mentors a sixth-grade student from Tuckahoe Middle School. In addition, Grayson and his Spider teammates are annual volunteers at the Special Olympics Virginia Summer Games, he participated in the NCAA s National Leadership Conference, he has served as a volunteer track coach at Douglas Wilder Middle School and also volunteers his time for the Hopewell-Prince George Healthy Family. Along with his off-campus work, the 2007 CAA Offensive Rookie of the Year was voted a UR junior class senator, works for the school s Bridge to Success program and hosts a number of forums and discussions on campus regarding diversity and inclusion. Defense Wins Championships s Stonewall Defense finished among the FCS leaders in every statistical category last season. shattered its previous school record with 29 interceptions and finished the season with a +24 margin in turnovers. The D has picked up right where it left off last season. The Spiders lead the CAA and rank seventh in the FCS this season in scoring defense (10.3 pts/gm) and are second in the CAA (fifth in FCS) in rushing defense (39.7 yds/gm). Hofstra totaled just 13 yards rushing on 34 carries -- the Pride became the fourth-straight opponent (dating back to last season) to rush for less than 100 yards. Rogers On Buchanan Watch List Junior CB Justin Rogers may be the most versatile threat in the Football Championship Subdivision. The junior speedster intercepted a team-leading seven passes (second-most in the FCS) last season, scored three defensive TDs on two interception returns and one fumble return and blocked a punt at Villanova. Also looking to become the school s first three-time All-America pick, Rogers enters the 2009 season on the Watch List for the Buck Buchanan Award, which is presented to the FCS s best defensive player. His seven picks in 2008 tied him with two other Spiders -- Jeff Nixon ( 78) and Taylor Lackey ( 85) -- for the second-most in a season. The record of eight is also held by Nixon ( 76) -- a former Buffalo Bill. Road Tested has proven to be one of the best road teams in college football over the last two seasons with a 13-3 (.813) mark away from UR Stadium versus FCS opponents (.737) overall. The Spiders currently own the longest road winning streak in all of Division I football (tied with Boise State) at eight-consecutive games, which establishes a new school record. The previous school record of six-straight road wins was set during Lights Out When Leading At The Half is 3-0 this season, was 11-1 last season, was 11-0 in 2007 and is 39-3 since the start of 2004 when leading at the half. The three setbacks came in 2006 at No. 1 UNH, in 2004 versus No. 12 Maine and in 2008 versus No. 1 JMU. Halftime Motivation One of the reasons the above stat is possible (the Spiders 25-1 record over the last three season when leading at the half) is s ability to impose its will on the scoreboard in the second half. is outscoring the opposition this season in the second half (35-15 in the fourth quarter). Last season, the Spiders outscored the opposition in the second half and overtime, including a edge in the fourth. Magic Number Is 30 The Spiders are 2-0 this season, were 9-1 last season, were 9-1 in 2007 and are 31-2 since 2005 when scoring 30+ points in a game -- s average margin of victory when doing so is 23.0 points. The only two setbacks over the last three seasons when scoring 30+ came to Appalachian State in the 2007 NCAA Semifinals, 55-35, and to No. 1 James Madison, 38-31, last season.
