Make the Spiders 2-0 on the season and give the team just its eighth 2-0 start since 1980 and its first since Give Head Coach Mike London his second career victory, improving his record to 2-0 overall. Give the Spiders their third victory all-time versus Virginia, making the series that dates back to Give s its first win in Charlottesville since Give the Spiders their second win over a FBS (formerly I-A) team since 2006, after beating Duke that season 13-0 in Durham, N.C. Improve to 2-0 overall (2-0 on the road; 0-0 at home) as a ranked team under Mike London. Move s record to as a ranked team (in the Sports Network poll) since 1993, and 11-2 since the start of Extend s regular-season winning streak to eight games, dating back to last season. (The Spiders have not lost in the regular season since a setback at Towson on Oct. 6). Make UR s all-time record Elon Game Notables The 22 yards rushing by Elon was the fewest by a Spider opponent since William & Mary ran for 18 yards (21 attempts) in a 41-7 victory on Nov. 19, Junior QB Eric Ward set a new career high with his 236 yards passing, surpassing his previous best of 218 yards set last season versus Delaware. converted eight of 14 third-down plays, with Ward having a hand in six of them (three by rushing, three by passing). The two-yard rush on third-and-one in the third quarter by All- Conference senior FB John Crone was his first carry since Senior DE Sherman Logan s (a 12-yard loss on QB Scott Riddle in the first quarter) was the 15th of his career, but his first since Oct. 7, It also pushed him into s Top-10 all-time. The Ward-to-Grayson 80-yard TD pass was tied for the sixth-longest in school history and ranked as s longest pass from scrimmage since D Arcy Wills hit Boyd Ouden for an 80-yard strike in Senior RB Josh Vaughan s 72-yard TD run was the second-longest of his career (78 in 2006) and his 119 yards rushing was the secondmost in his career behind the 132 versus William & Mary in Junior K Andrew Howard made good on all four extra point attempts, extending the school-record for consecutive PATs made to 96. He has not missed a PAT in his collegiate career. FBS Success It s no question Appalachian State s win at Michigan last season is the benchmark for victories by the FCS over the FBS, but CAA Football squads own 15 wins over the FBS since including two by (Arkansas State in 2000 and Duke in 2006). Last season, Delaware downed Navy and New Hampshire tripped up Marshall. narrowly missed a third FBS victory since 1997 (fourth all-time), falling, 17-16, in THURSDAY ACCESS = OPEN FRIDAY ACCESS=CLOSED Team Walk-Thru at UR Stadium (3:45 p.m. ET) SATURDAY RICHMOND VS VIRGINIA RICHMONDSPIDERS.COM FOOTBALL NOTES PAGE 2 GAME DAY Team departs for UVa (11:45 a.m. ET) Spiders vs. Cavaliers (3:45 p.m. ET) Audio: ESPN 950; 93.1 FM; Spiders.com TV: ESPNU

3 Wins Versus The FBS switched from I-A to I-AA in 1981, and since the Spiders have defeated three FBS (formally I-A) teams: Date Location Result Sept. 7, 1985* Tech Lane Stadium (Blacksburg) W, Sept. 30, 2000 at Arkansas State Indian Stadium (Jonesboro) W, Sept. 2, 2006 at Duke Wallace Wade Stadium (Durham) W, 13-0 * The victory at Tech in 1985 triggered a seven-game winning streak to open the season and the Spiders were eventually ranked No. 1 for five-straight weeks. First Time Was A Charm Mike London is the 33rd head coach in the history of Football. All time, the coaches own a record in their first game coaching the Spiders. had 23 different head coaches between 1881 and 1943 when Malcom Pitt took the helm. Since then, s rookie coaches are 8-4 in their first games, including London s win. London s opener at Elon marked just the fourth time since 1919 that a head coach had debuted on the road, though the previous three were winless -- Frank Dobson (1919; 0-0 tie ), Frank Jones (1966; 23-0 loss at Dayton) and Dave Clawson (2004; 42-0 loss at N.C. State). Good Week For The Londons The same weekend Mike London picked up his first career headcoaching victory, his son Brandon was signed to the Miami Dolphins active roster. Brandon was a standout WR at Massachusetts and spent last season on the New York Giants practice squad. Brandon led the Minutemen in receiving in 2006 and finished his career as the school s second-leading receiver. Poll Position finds itself ranked in the FCS Top 25 for the 14thconsecutive week dating back to last season, extending a school-record. The Spiders are No. 3 the Sports Network Poll this week and receiving four first-place votes, and No. 3 in the FCS Coaches Poll (one first-place vote). The rank is the team s highest since reaching No. 1 for five-consecutive weeks during the 1985 campaign. Top 25 Success No other team in the FCS had more wins last season versus Top-25 ranked teams than the Spiders. On their way to a school-record 11-3 season, the Spiders knocked off six Top-25 foes and dropped just one -- to eventual National Champ No. 5 Appalachian State in the NCAA Semifinals. In fact, was 5-1 versus teams ranked 11th or higher, and 3-1 versus the Top 10. is now 7-1 versus the Top-25 since The Total Package No other team in CAA Football has won more conference titles since 1998 than. The Spiders have four to their credit (1998, 2000, 2005 and 2007), matching the same number as Massachusetts. In addition, is one of just six teams in the FCS with multiple appearances in the NCAA Quarterfinals since 2005, is one of just 12 teams with multiple conference titles in last three seasons and its.703 winning percentage since 2005 is the FCS s 15th-highest. But s success is not just on the field. The football program was one of just 25 D-I teams in 2007 to earn the NCAA s public recognition award for the graduation rates of its football players. The team s 95% grad rate is the second-highest in the league behind William & Mary s 96%. LAST MEETING Virginia 17, 16 Scott Stadium - Sept. 1, 2001 The home-standing Cavaliers jumped out to a 17-0 lead and had to withstand a furious Spider comeback -- and a missed PAT -- over the final 16:49 of regulation to win A Cordell Roane 46-yard TD run put on the board with 1:49 remaining in the third quarter. Then Doug Kirchner connected on a 30-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter, making the score was an extra-point away from drawing even at the 8:50 mark of the fourth when Claude Diggs scored on a five-yard TD run. But the Spiders extra point try was no good and Virginia managed to escape with the victory. Other than two ties (0-0 in 1919 and 7-7 in 1942), the 2001 meeting stands as the lone one-point game in the series that dates back to Another Bruising Schedule The Spiders 2008 schedule features five opponents currently ranked in the Sports Network Top 25, including last week s foe Elon (No. 17) along with CAA Football rivals Massachusetts (No. 4), James Madison (No. 6), Delaware (No. 8) and Villanova (No. 23)... Including New Hampshire at 15th, CAA Football leads the nation with six teams ranked overall and four in the top 10. That schedule is even tougher when you consider both the UMass and Villanova games are on the road, against teams that own 15-game and seven-game home winning streaks, respectively. UMass home winning streak is second nationally only to App. State s 24-straight. is set to face three teams this season that reached the 2007 NCAA Playoffs and three more with 7-4 records in Home Sweet Home may have a difficult road schedule in 2008, but it has five games at UR Stadium to look forward to, where the Spiders were a spotless 6-0 and averaged 37.0 points last season. The clean slate at home was the first for the Spiders since going 5-0 in the 1995 season. was second in the CAA in points per game at home, putting up 45 against UNH, 42 against Stony Brook, 38 in the URI game, 35 against Villanova and 31 versus both William & Mary and Eastern Kentucky. Entering 2008, the Spiders six-game home winning streak is the nation s fifth-longest. Big Success When Scoring First Since the start of the 2005 season, has struck for the first points in 25 of the 36 games and is 21-4 when doing so. Two of the setbacks have come at Vanderbilt (2005 and 2007). In both games against the Commodores, scored first with a field goal, but could not hang on. In addition, the Spiders defense has allowed just 13 first-quarter touchdowns since Lights Out When Leading At The Half went 11-0 last season when leading at the half (1-0 this year) and is 27-2 since the start of The two setbacks came in 2006 at top-ranked New Hampshire and in 2004 versus No. 12 Maine. In two of the final three games of the 2007 regular season, big defensive plays allowed UR to take a lead at half, en route to a victory: Villanova - defensive stand at the goal line and a missed Wildcats 20-yard FG in the half s closing minutes. Delaware - Seth Williams returned an interception 44 yards for a TD in the half s closing seconds, turning a UD lead into a Spider advantage at the break. Magic Number Is 30 The Spiders were 9-1 last season (20-1 since 2005) when scoring 30+ points in a game, including the win over Eastern Kentucky in the NCAA First Round -- and s average margin of victory when doing so is 21.8 points/game. had surpassed 30 points in nine of its 11 victories last season -- in fact, the Spiders scored over 45 points in three-straight games (Northeastern, Bucknell, New Hampshire) for the first time in team history. The only setback over the last three years when scoring 30+ came to Appalachian State in the 2007 NCAA Semifinals, In fact, the previous loss when scoring 30+ was 2001 (31-30 vs. #14 Villanova). Of those 28 scoring drives, an impressive 26 have resulted in TDs and two in FGs. had embarked on two such drives last Saturday in two very different ways. The first was a quick-strike, one-play, 80-yard TD pass from Eric Ward to Kevin Grayson, while the other was a clockeating, 15-play, 90-yard trek that consumed 7:44 and resulted in a Josh Vaughan two-yard TD run. The Spiders other two TD drives at Elon were 73 and 72 yards. Ward Wins CAA, National Weekly Honors QB Eric Ward was named the Sports Network National Offensive Player of the Week and the CAA Football Offensive Player of the Week following the Elon win. The junior was 17-of-22 passing with 236 yards, two TDs and no interceptions. He also ran 14 times for 59 yards. It marks his first career national award and second CAA mention. For-WARD Progress Junior QB Eric Ward has emerged as a big-game signal-caller, and he s got the stats to back up the claim. In front of the 14 biggest crowds to watch the Spiders play since 2006, Ward has led his team to 10 wins, completed nearly 65% of his passes for 2,499 yards, 23 TDs and just nine picks. He s also 7-3 in his career versus Top-25 opponents (see chart). He was his most-clutch on the road in one of the most-hostile environments in the FCS -- at Delaware in front of 21,187 last season -- where he was 16-of-29 with 199 yards and a career-high four TD passes (0 INT) in leading to an epic win in five OTs. The 2006 Offensive Rookie of the Year in the conference passed for a career-high 236 yards in the 2008 opener at Elon, becoming just the Spiders sixth all-time 4,000-yard passer. He currently holds the school record for career completion percentage at 60.6 and is seventh all-time TDs throw (30) and sixth in pass yards (4,001). The Spiders sacked All-American QB Scott Riddle three times and held All-American WR Terrell Hudgins to 78 yards and no TDs. That tandem averaged yards receiving and yards passing, respectively, last season. As a team, Elon put up 36.4 points/game and averaged in total offense last season. Special Special Teams Some highlights from a standout 2007 by the Special Teams unit: Accounted for nearly 30% of s points scored (131 of 489). Justin Rogers (pictured) took a kickoff back 93 yds for a TD against Vandy and brought an 85-yd return back versus UNH. Rogers (31.4 avg) ranked as the NCAA s third-leading kickoff returner and was first in the CAA. He was the CAA Special Teams Player of the Year. Derek Hatcher returned a punt 66 yds for TD against Stony Brook. Hatcher (12.0 avg) ranked as the NCAA s 15th-leading punt returner and was second in the CAA. Blocked six kicks: two blocked FGs, three blocked punts (two by Justin Forte) and a blocked extra point vs. Appalachian State. Forte s first blocked punt was returned 24 yds for a TD by Jonathan Mayfield against URI; his other block was returned five yds for a TD by Patrick Weldon against W&M. Howard Gets His Kicks With the wind in his face and the game on the line in the second OT at Delaware, junior K Andrew Howard drilled his longest field goal of the season -- a 41-yarder -- to keep the Spiders hopes alive. Howard made two kicks in the game and converted all six extra points to account for 12 of s 62 points. He was spotless in the PAT department last season (58-for-58), and is 96-for-96 in his collegiate career, extending the record for consecutive extra points made. The hometown product from Hermitage HS is 25-for-35 (71%) in field goal tries for his career. Inside 30 yards, he s 14-for-15 and from 40 yards or longer, the sophomore is 5-for-8 -- with his career-long of 45 yards coming against James Madison in Howard, who broke the Spiders single-season records for points by kickers (103) and extra points made (58) last season, is six FGs shy of moving into third place all-time at and 17 points away from the school record in scoring by kickers. The Crone Effect Senior FB John Crone, who spent much of his time blocking for current Arizona Cardinal Tim Hightower last season, missed three consecutive games late in 2006 due to injury and was winless in those contests. After going down with a leg injury against Delaware on Oct. 21 (a UR loss), Crone did not return to the field until the season-finale versus William & Mary (a UR win). Considered CAA Football s premier blocking fullback, Crone was a 2007 Second Team All-CAA Football. In 2006, the Spiders were 6-2 with Crone on the field and 0-3 without him. All-time, is 27-9 when Crone plays. All Angles Covered Senior DE Lawrence Sidbury, Jr. enters the 2008 season as the No. 1 rated DE in the FCS by NFL Draft Scout. 7 But the computer sciences major s biggest contributions may have been made off the field. Sid spent the past spring and summer as a high-school tutor, teaching students geometry. For the final five weeks of the school year, Sidbury worked for Public Schools with students at Armstrong HS to help them prepare for the Geometry Standard of Learning test, mandated by the state of Virginia. He then spent the remainder of the summer tutoring students at John Marshall H.S. Students can have a hard time remembering all the rules and concepts, Sidbury said in an interview with NCAASports.com. I mainly try to teach concepts, and teach them in a way that they stick so they can recall information when they take tests. The native of Cheltenham, Md. was recognized by an Armstrong administrator as a person they could use as a role model for kids who were not focused in school, further mentoring inner-city youths on more than just academics. Sixth-Season Spiders It s a rare occurrence for the NCAA to grant a student-athlete a sixth-season of eligibility. NCAA rules require a D-I athlete to complete his four seasons of eligibility within five years of first enrolling in college, but exceptions can be made in cases when two seasons are missed for medical reasons. Count both DE Sherman Logan (pictured) and OL Tim Silver as exceptions. Both were expected to make big impacts for the Spiders last season, but Silver went down in the opener with a season-ending knee injury and Logan suffered a broken foot, which held him out much of the season. They each had previous injuries that caused redshirted seasons -- Logan in 2004 (neck) and Silver in 2003 (shoulder). Silver and Logan -- each will turn 23 during the upcoming season -- have been identified by scouting services as players with potential to be selected in the 2009 NFL draft. Local Flavor Of s 15 All-CAA Football selections last season, three are homegrown products from the Capital City -- Stephen Howell, Kevin Grayson and Eric McBride. In fact, the CAA s Offensive and Defensive Rookies of the Year (Grayson and McBride) are both graduates of nearby L.C. Bird HS. Howell, now a UR grad, attended Highland Springs HS. Not on the All-Conference teams, but making big impacts are junior K Andrew Howard and senior RB Josh Vaughan, who each attended Hermitage HS in. With the Hermitage Band playing at halftime, Howard and Vaughan scored 19 of s 31 points in the CAA title-clinching win over William & Mary last season. Former Highland Springs head coach Scott Burton, a 1995 UR graduate is now in his first year on London s staff as the TE coach. Spider In Space Former football player and NASA astronaut Leland Melvin became the first Spider in Space when his mission launched at 2:45 p.m. ET on February 8, The 43-year-old former wide receiver helped deliver a European laboratory to the International Space Station. His main responsibility was the operation of the shuttle s robotic arm. Melvin 85 still holds the Spiders career records for receiving yards and receptions and was inducted into the UR Hall of Fame in Melvin addressed the team at the 2007 Ring Ceremony upon his return, and brought back a football signed by the 2007 Spiders that accompanied him in space. The CAA as a whole had nearly 50 televised games last year across ESPN s and Comcast s family of networks and is set to surpass that in s TV slate kicks off Sept. 6 on ESPNU - - marking the program s second regular-season national TV game. Football Reaches Out For the 13th consecutive year, players and staff volunteered at the Virginia Special Olympics this past summer. Thirty members of the Spiders team were on-hand through the weekend and Head Coach Mike London addressed the athletes at the Opening Ceremony at a packed Robins Center on the UR campus. The football team s participation at the event was started by former head coach Jim Reid, carried on by Dave Clawson and London. The Spiders helped organize the Opening Ceremony and served as volunteers at the power lifting event, held inside the Robins Center. The outdoor events were contested at First Market Stadium. High On Hightower The steal of the draft? A fantasy sleeper? The heir-apparent to current starter Edgerrin James? Whatever the question, former All- American Tim Hightower is still making headlines, less than a year after the most prolific rushing season in school history. Hightower was one of two Spiders taken in the NFL Draft, picked by Arizona in the fifth round, while WR Arman Shields -- was drafted in the fourth round by Oakland. Shields and Hightower were the 33rd and 34th Spiders to be drafted all-time and the first draftees since It also marked the first time since 1999 that multiple Spiders went in the same draft. Hightower put the finishing touches on a remarkable career by finishing sixth in the NCAA in rushing (137.4 yds/game) and breaking 12 records in Among the records het set were the singleseason and career rushing marks, the single-season and career scoring A Cardinal High Tim Hightower s game-by-game stats from Arizona s four preseason game: Date Car.
