2 THE SERIES Richmond has a lead in the series which was first contested in 1981, before the Spiders moved from Division I- A to Division I-AA. Each team has six wins in meetings on the Spiders home field. Richmond won last season s meeting at JMU while JMU won in 2006 in the last meeting at Richmond. JMU has won the last two games in Richmond, and the Spiders have won the last two meetings at JMU. The teams met in the 1985 Oyster Bowl in Norfolk when Richmond was the No. 1-ranked team in Division I-AA. The Spiders, 15th in the two major FCS polls, got a field goal on their first series, a touchdown after a fumble recovery at the JMU 10, and a 59-yard drive for a second-period touchdown to lead 17-0 with 0:40 left in the first half. NOTES ON THE DUKES JMU came back to get a touchdown on a 61-yard pass with just 0:16 left before halftime and moved into scoring position three times during the final half but could score only on a field goal each time. The Dukes, sixth in both major polls, advanced into UR territory with a chance to post a go-ahead score after getting to within 17-16, but an interception at the Spider 23 with 0:58 left ended the threat. JMU had a six-game winning streak ended and lost for the first time in 12 home games, since late during the 2005 season. JMU had only 37 yards and two first downs before its two-play, 71-yard drive during the last minute of the first half to get to within The Dukes finished with 256 yards and lost two fumbles and threw an interception for the first time in seven games. UR had 245 yards, including but 83 yards during the final half. The Spiders had two last-half turnovers. Dave Stannard tied a JMU game record with three field goals and his third, a 36-yarder with 6:00 left, got JMU to within The Dukes then held UR to one first down and got the ball at their 34 with 2:03 left after a punt and 15-yard fair catch interference penalty. Rodney Landers hit Rockeed McCarter on a 10-yard pass, Antoinne Bolton ran for nine yards, and Landers ran for three yards for a JMU first down at the UR 44 with 1:11 left. But from there, UR's Stephen Howell intercepted a Landers pass, and UR ran out the clock from the JMU 23. Stannard's other field goals were from 40 and 39 yards, and he tied JMU's individual record, reached 10 other times. His 40-yarder came at 13:25 of the third quarter after JMU s Darrieus Ramsey recovered a fumble at the Spiders' 23 on their first play of the second half. The 39-yarder came at 7:11 of the third quarter and at the end of a 42-yard JMU drive after an interception by Marcus Haywood. The 36-yarder with 6:00 left ended a nine-play, 50-yard series after JMU stopped UR at the JMU 33. UR went 70 yards in 17 plays for its first score, a 21-yard Andrew Howard field goal at 4:59 of the first period. The Spiders used 8:01 of time on the series. The lead went to 10-0 at 8:28 of the second period when Eric Ward hit Scot Riddell on a 10-yard touchdown pass on the first play after the Spiders recovered a fumble at the JMU 10. The 59-yard drive that gave UR its 17-0 edge took 10 plays with Tim Hightower covering the last four yards with 0:40 left in the half. JMU answered 0:24 later when Landers hit Bosco Williams, who spilt two defenders for a 61-yard scoring reception. JMU LAST WEEK JMU posted its largest margin of victory over a conference opponent with a 56-0 win over Hofstra in CAA play during its Family Weekend. The Dukes previous largest margin of victory against a conference opponent was in a win over Towson to close the 2005 season. It was one point shy of the most points scored against a conference team as JMU defeated Villanova in The shutout for the JMU defense was the first since a 56-0 win over Division II Lock Haven to open the 2005 season and the first shutout against an FCS team since 2004 in a 17-0 triumph at Villanova. JMU led Hofstra in total yards 375 to 195, including a advantage in rushing yardage. The Dukes averaged 6.6 yards per play compared to 3.0 per play for the Pride. Hofstra didn t have a play of as long as 20 yards. JMU senior quarterback Rodney Landers (Virginia Beach, Va.) accounted for 225 yards of total offense and four touchdowns. He rushed for 133 yards on 13 carries and one score, becoming the career leader for rushing yards by a quarterback at JMU, passing Eriq Williams ( ), with 2,442. Landers also completed seven of 13 passes for 92 yards and a career-high-tying three touchdowns. Two of the touchdown passes went to junior wide receiver Rockeed McCarter (Philadelphia, Pa.), the first multipletouchdown game of his career. McCarter finished with four catches for 46 yards and blocked a punt on Hofstra s first possession. JMU started the onslaught after holding Hofstra to three-and-out on its first offensive set. McCarter broke loose through the line for the block of the punt attempt, which was recovered by freshman tailback Corwin Acker (Landover, Md.) and returned 16 yards for a touchdown. It was the first blocked punt or kick of the season and the first returned for a touchdown by the Dukes since 2001 against Elon. The Dukes proceeded to score on their next four offensive sets to lead 35-0 at halftime. The scoring included a threeyard run by senior tailback Eugene Holloman (Virginia Beach, Va.), a sevenyard screen pass from Landers to McCarter, a 49-yard pass from Landers to sophomore tailback Griff Yancey (Glen Allen, Va.), and a 45-yard run by Landers. JMU s second-half touchdowns included a similar four-yard pass from Landers to McCarter, a 44-yard interception return by sophomore defensive tackle Ronnell Brown (Chesapeake, Va.), and a 25-yard run by sophomore quarterback Drew Dudzik (Clifton, Va.). Hofstra s Cory Christopher completed 21 of 34 passes for 128 yards with two interceptions. Aaron Weaver had nine receptions for 47 yards. RICHMOND LAST WEEK Richmond led 14-0 after just more than eight minutes and rolled to a non-conference win at Virginia Military Institute. Josh Vaughan and Tyler Kirchoff each had two touchdown runs for the Spiders. Richmond had 419 yards to VMI s 267, including a advantage on the ground. VMI didn t complete any of its five passes. UR scored first on a 29-yard Eric Ward-to-Tre Gray pass at 9:01 of the opening quarter and led 14-0 at 6:53 when Justin Rogers intercepted a lateral and scored from 41 yards. Vaughan ran 16 times for 123 yards and had scoring runs of four and two yards. Kirchoff had scoring runs of one yard and eight yards for UR s final points. Ward hit on 10 of 13 passes for 130 yards, and five Spiders had receptions. SCOUTING RICHMOND The Spiders average 32.2 points and yards of total offense (158.7 rushing, passing) and allow averages of 16.5 points and yards (117.5 rushing, passing). Eric Ward through six games has completed 66.0 percent (93-141) of his passes for 1,198 yards and nine touchdowns and has been intercepted only twice. Kevin Grayson has 27 catches for 374 yards and a score, Tre Gray 20 for 249 yards and two scores, and Jordan Mitchell 12 for 272 yards and three touchdowns. Josh Vaughan is the team s leading rusher with 476 yards (5.0 average) and five touchdowns, and Justin Forte has run for 120 yards (5.0 average) and a score. Linebackers Collin McConaghy and Eric McBride and free safety Derek Hatcher lead a balanced defense with 36, 34 and 34 tackles, respectively. Ten Spiders have more than 20 tackles, and six have interceptions, including Justin Rogers with four. CAA FOOTBALL JMU and the other 11 former members of the Atlantic 10 Football Conference first played in 2007 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The CAA took control of the league between the 2006 and the 2007 seasons. The CAA formed in 1985 but had not previously sponsored football. JMU and football members Delaware, Hofstra, Northeastern, Towson, and William & Mary are full CAA members. The football affiliation's other six -- Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Richmond, and Villanova -- are CAA associate members. What has become CAA football began as the Yankee Conference in The Yankee first was an all-sports league but in 1978, with the formation of the NCAA s Division I-AA, became football only. 4 JMU FOOTBALL HISTORY The 2008 season is JMU's 37th of football, its 35th varsity football season, its 30th season with football scholarships, and its 29th season competing at what is now the NCAA s Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) level. JMU began football in 1972, went to a varsity schedule in 1974, first awarded scholarships for the 1979 season and moved to Division I-AA in JMU moved from Division III to Division in 1979 and to then-division I-AA in JMU s top years in addition to winning the 2004 I-AA title (13-2) have been 2007 (8-4, NCAA), 2006 (9-3, NCAA), 1999 (8-4, NCAA), 1995 (8-4, NCAA), 1994 (10-3, NCAA second round), 1991 (9-4, NCAA second round), 1987 (9-3, NCAA), 1982 (8-3), 1978 (8-2, No. 9, Division III), and 1975 (9-0-1, College Division). JORDAN ACTIVE WITH EAGLE Former JMU linebacker Akeem Jordan ( ), the 2006 league defensive player of the year the year, was added to the Philadelphia Eagles' 53-man roster Oct. 29, 2007 and assumed a starting linebacker role with the team before season s end. He had been with the team's practice unit after joining the squad for preseason drills. Jordan took part in 140 tackles at JMU in 2006 when he was national defensive player of the year by College Sporting News and runner-up for the Buck Buchanan Award and was named to three first All-America teams. Two other former Dukes saw extensive time during the 2007 preseason with NFL teams, including tailback Alvin Banks with the New York Jets and offensive lineman Corey Davis with the Buffalo Bills. Justin Rascati, JMU's starting quarterback from , briefly was with the Chicago Bears. Two former Dukes recently were active in the NFL, including tight end Ed Perry ( ) with the Miami Dolphins and tailback/return specialist Delvin Joyce ( ) with the New York Jets. Perry was a tight end and special teams performer after being Miami's sixthround 1997 draft choice and first-team All- Yankee Conference during each of his final three college seasons. Joyce signed as a free agent before the 2002 season with the New York Giants and was released during the 2004 preseason. He signed with the New York Jets but was released before the 2005 season. Joyce ended his JMU career as the only player in Division I-AA history with 1,000 yards in each of the career statistical categories of rushing, receiving, punt returns and kickoff returns and as the alltime Division I-AA leader in punt return yards and combined kick return yards. He holds most of JMU s career kick return marks and is the program s all-time leader in all-purpose yards with 5,659. FORMER JMU STANDOUTS In addition to the former Dukes players recently active with professional football organizations, JMU's leading alltime performers include several other players who have enjoyed success in the NFL placekicker Scott Norwood ( ), wide receiver Gary Clark ( ), defensive end Charles Haley ( ), linebacker Dion Foxx ( ), wide receiver Macey Brooks ( ), and running back Curtis Keaton ( ). Norwood received All-Pro honors as a placekicker with the Buffalo Bills. Clark (wide receiver) was All-Pro with Washington and a member of two winning Super Bowl teams and then played with the Arizona and Miami. Haley (defensive end) was the first player to be a member of five Super Bowl title teams while playing with the San Francisco 49ers and the Dallas Cowboys. Foxx (linebacker) played with the Miami Dolphins. Brooks (wide receiver) was with the Dallas Cowboys and Chicago Bears, and Keaton was with the Cincinnati Bengals and New Orleans Saints after being the 1999 Atlantic 10 offensive player of the year. COACHING STAFF UPDATE JMU s coaching staff returns nine of its 10 assistants from last season with cornerbacks coach Mark Hendricks the group s only newcomer. Hendricks replaced Joe Danna, who took a position with the NFL s Atlanta Falcon after one JMU year. Two of the team's full-time assistants have been at JMU throughout head coach Mickey Matthews 10 JMU years -- George Barlow (assistant head coach coach, defensive coordinator, safeties) and Kyle Gillenwater (linebackers). Ulrick Edmonds (running backs) is in his sixth year. The former JMU defensive lineman ( ) was an assistant in 2001 and rejoined the staff in In their fifth JMU years are Jeff Durden (offensive coordinator, quarterbacks) and J.C. Price (defensive line). In their third seasons on the JMU staff are tight ends coach Josh Haymore, offensive line coach Chris Malone and wide receivers and kickers coach Clayton Matthews. Defensive line assistant Isai Bradshaw is in his second JMU year. Bradshaw, Haymore, and Matthews are former JMU players, and Bradshaw (defensive end) and Haymore (long snapper) were members of the Dukes 2004 national title team. 5 MATTHEWS SETS WINS MARK Mickey Matthews ( ) became JMU s winningest football coach Sept. 27 in a victory at Maine. The win gave the 10th-year Dukes coach a JMU record. Challace McMillin ( ), JMU s first football coach, had a JMU record and held the previous team coaching wins record. McMillin works with JMU teams in a sports psychology role and was with the team at Maine for a special presentation to Matthews. FAMILY TIES Several current Dukes had family ties to JMU athletics before joining the Dukes' program as players, including the following: Sophomore fullback Donnell Brown (Chesapeake, Va.) and sophomore defensive tackle Ronnell Brown (Chesapeake, Va.) are twins and brothers of former JMU tight end/fullback Marvin Brown ( ). Junior offensive lineman Chris Clarke's (Williamsburg, Va.) brother, Grant ( ), was a JMU offensive lineman and a member of the Dukes' 1999 league-title-tying and NCAA playoff team. Sophomore tight end Jason Dosh's (Glen Allen, Va.) father, Pat, was a standout JMU basketball player ( ) and is in the university s athletic hall of fame. Sophomore quarterback Drew Dudzik's (Clifton, Va.) father, Mike, lettered as a JMU quarterback during the 1980 season. Junior linebacker Reggie Hicks' (Kittrell, N.C.) brother, Richard, lettered for the Dukes from and played on JMU s 1999 NCAA playoff team. Junior wide receiver Rockeed McCarter's (Philadelphia, Pa.) brother, Rodney, lettered at JMU from , played on their 2004 NCAA title team and is a JMU staff member. Junior tight end/fullback Charlie Newman's father, Charlie, lettered for the Dukes from and was a member of JMU's first football scholarship class. His mother, the former Robyn Dunn, played field hockey and lacrosse for the Dukes. JMU'S HOME SUCCESS JMU in 2007 compiled a 5-1 home record after going 5-0 at home in 2006, its sixth unbeaten campaign at Bridgeforth Stadium/Zane Showker Field. The Dukes' best home record was during the 2000 season when they were 6-0. JMU also was 5-0 at home in 1975, 1978, 1987 and Those seasons, as expected, are among the top campaigns in team history. The 1975 team was in the college division; the 1978 team was 8-2 and No. 9 in Division III; the 1987 team was 9-3 and JMU's first to reach postseason NCAA Division I-AA play; the 1999 team was 8-4 and went to the postseason during Coach Mickey Matthews' first JMU year; the 2000 team was 6-5, the 2006 team was 9-3 and an NCAA playoff invitee, and the 2007 team was 8-4 and an NCAA playoff invitee. During each of the three years before the 2006 season JMU was 5-1 in home games. Holloman assumed JMU s starting tailback role in 2006 and ran for 1,085 yards and eight touchdowns and caught 11 passes while earning first-team all-league recognition that season. He played in JMU s first two games last season, running for 180 yards and catching three passes, including one for a touchdown.

6 LEZOTTE ERA ENDS FOR JMU In 2008 for the first time in eight seasons JMU won t have a member of the LeZotte family on its roster. Quarterback Matt LeZotte was with the Dukes from , and his brother Tony was in the program from Both were members of the Dukes 2004 national championship team. Matt LeZotte was JMU s quarterback starter from after a redshirt year and its top quarterback reserve in Tony LeZotte started 50-straight JMU games from following a redshirt season in 2003, and the Augusta, Ga., native was a four-time All-America, the first player to earn four first-team allleague honors in the Atlantic 10/Colonial Athletic Association, the 2004 league defensive rookie of the year and the 2005 and 2007 league defensive player of the year. Tony LeZotte led JMU in tackles as a redshirt freshman (144) during the team s 2004 national championship season, in 2005 (95) and in 2007 (95). He completed his career with 416 stops, the No. 6 career mark for a JMU player, the program s best mark since 1986, and the best total for a JMU defensive back. LANDERS' " " EFFORTS Quarterback Rodney Landers (Virginia Beach, Va.) in a home win over New Hampshire Sept. 8, 2007 became the first Duke to run and pass for 100 yards in a game since He ran 20 times for 128 yards and two scores and hit on 14 of 22 passes for 241 yards and a score. His rushing, passing and total offense yardage figures for the game all were thencareer highs. The last Duke with 100 rushing and passing yards in a game had been Charles Berry ( ), who ran for 105 yards and threw for 181 in a home win over New Hampshire Sept. 30, Landers during the 2007 season also reached the "100/100" mark against Coastal Carolina (129 rush, 163 pass), at Rhode Island (242 and three scores passing, 166 rushing), and at Appalachian State (129 rushing, 124 passing). This season Landers ran for 156 yards and threw for 108 at Maine. Landers had been the last JMU quarterback to run for 100 yards in a game, gaining 106 yards on eight carries in a 65-7 home victory over Delaware State Sept. 17, He had a JMU-quarterbackrecord-long run of 81 yards during that game. Landers' effort vs. New Hampshire was JMU's first 300-yard total offense game since Justin Rascati ( ) had 305 yards in a 65-7 win over Delaware State Sept. 17, It was the then-no. 5 game effort in team history and the best since Matt LeZotte's then-team-record 405 yards at Villanova Oct. 6, Landers set JMU s game total offense mark (408 yards) in 2007 in a win at Rhode Island. LANDERS NO. 1 QB RUSHER Senior quarterback Rodney Landers became JMU s quarterback career rushing yards leader in the Dukes 56-0 home win over Hofstra Oct. 4. He moved past Eriq Williams ( ), who ran for 2,322 yards at JMU. Williams became JMU s starting quarterback midway through the 1989 season and held the position for the next three seasons. Landers has been a twoyear starter for the Dukes. Landers, Williams and Justin Rascati ( ) are the only JMU quarterbacks with 1,000 career rushing yards. Rascati ran for 1,199 yards as a JMU player. JMU IN NO. 1 POLL POSITION JMU was voted to the No. 1 position in the Sept. 22 Football Championship Subdivision coaches poll, the first time the Dukes had held the No. 1 spot in the coaches or The Sports Network poll since early during the 2005 season (JMU s first regular-season appearance at the top of the polls). Coming off its 2004 national title when the Dukes were voted to the No. 1 position in the final FCS polls -- JMU was the FCS No. 1 team in the 2005 preseason polls and through the first week of the 2005 regular season. JMU S NATIONAL RANKINGS JMU has been ranked in all but three top-25 FCS polls by The Sports Network since early during the 2004 season. The Dukes moved into the rankings Sept. 20, 2004 and went on to win that season s national title. They since have been out of the top 25 for only three weeks during the 2005 season. In a home win over Massachusetts Sept. 13, JMU had an eightplay, 71-yard drive that consumed 4:04 and gave the Dukes a lead with 1:56 to play. In a home win over Appalachian State Sept. 20, JMU had a 10-play, 87-yard drive that consumed 5:50 and gave the Dukes a lead with 2:31 to play. In a win at Maine Sept. 27, JMU had an 11-play, 85-yard drive that consumed 6:27 and gave the Dukes a lead with 3:39 to play. LANDERS QB RUSHING MARK Senior quarterback Rodney Landers (Virginia Beach, Va.) broke his own JMU game record for quarterback rushing yards with a 206-yard effort against Massachusetts Sept. 13. Landers ran 26 times and had scoring runs of 17 and three yards during the game.

7 His previous record was 171 yards last season in a win at William & Mary. The effort against Massachusetts gave Landers seven of the top nine quarterback game rushing totals in JMU history. He ran for 156 yards at Maine Sept. 27, giving him eight of JMU s top-10 quarterback game rushing efforts. LANDERS 200-YARD OUTING Senior quarterback Rodney Landers (Virginia Beach, Va.) 206-yard rushing effort against Massachusetts was JMU s first 200-yard rushing game in nearly nine seasons. The last JMU player with 200 rushing yards in a game was Curtis Keaton ( ), who ran for 210 yards in a 13-3 win over South Florida Oct. 30, The 1999 South Florida game was the third straight in which Keaton ran for 200 yards. He had 654 yards during the three-game span. McGEE S SCORING RETURNS Junior cornerback Scotty McGee (Virginia Beach, Va.) had a 38-yard punt return for a touchdown against North Carolina Central Sept. 6 to become only the second player to score on both kickoff and punt returns for JMU. The other was wide receiver Gary Clark ( ), who went on to an All-Pro career with the Washington Redskins. This season McGee has tied JMU s career records for touchdowns on kickoff returns (3) and on overall kick returns (4). McGee had a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in 2006 at Youngstown State, a 100-yarder for a score last season against Towson, and a 99-yarder for a score Sept. 20 against Appalachian State. Clark as a Duke returned three punts and one kickoff for touchdowns. He returned a punt for a score against Appalachian State in 1982, two punts for scores at Virginia in 1983 and a kickoff for a score against Liberty in Dwight Robinson ( ) had three kickoff returns for scores as a Duke -- in 1993 against Lock Haven and William & Mary and in 1994 against Villanova. JMU s most-recent punt return for a touchdownscore had been a 57-yarder by L.C. Baker ( ) in 2005 at home against Maine. HAYWOOD S INTERCEPTIONS Senior free safety Marcus Haywood (Williamsburg, Va.) intercepted two passes Sept. 6 in JMU s 56-7 home win over North Carolina Central, the first time since 2003 that a JMU player had had two interceptions in a game. Rondell Bradley ( ) intercepted two passes in a 2003 JMU home game against Richmond. He had two interceptions in a game for a second time Sept. 27 at Maine. A JMU player hasn t had as many as four interceptions in a season since Clint Kent ( ) had four in Kent and Trey Townsend ( ) with five during JMU s national title year of 2004 were the last Dukes with more than four interceptions in a season. Haywood during the Maine game raised his career interceptions total to six. JMU QBS WELL PROTECTED JMU has allowed only five quarterback sacks this season after allowing only six in 12 games during the 2007 season. Junior cornerback Scotty McGee (Virginia Beach, Va.) had a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, tying JMU career records for kickoff returns for scores (3/Dwight Robinson, ) and overall kick returns for scores (4/Gary Clark, ). Senior quarterback Rodney Landers (Virginia Beach, Va.) had his JMU careerquarterback-record ninth 100-yard rushing game (113 yards). JMU scored 21 third-quarter points, matching its record against Division I foes (at Morehead State 1984, at Delaware 2007). JMU scored 35 second-half points to match its record against Division I foes (at Northeastern 1993). HU JMU shut out an opponent for the first time since beating Lock Haven 56-0 Sept. 3, 2005 and blanked a Division I foe for the first time since winning 17-0 at Villanova Sept. 18, JMU reached the 50-point scoring plateau in a game for the third time in 2008, matching its 2005 team record of three 50-point games. JMU blocked a kick for the first time in 2008, had a blocked punt for the first time since Nov. 10, 2007 at William & Mary and scored on a blocked punt for the first time 2001 in a home win over Elon.
