1 PHYSICAL EDUCATION GRADES 1 AND 2 SEPTEMBER Educational Movement and Rhythms 1. Walking 2. Running 3. Leaping 4. Hopping 5. Jumping 6. Skipping 7. Galloping 8. Sliding Each of these locomotor movements will be explored with emphasis on the following factors: direction, levels, base of support, range, pathways, speed, intensity/force, accent and body position. 1. Foot skills in place 2. Dribble the ball in different directions and make various patterns while dribbling 3. Trap a rolling ball 4. Pass the ball to a partner 5. Kick the ball against the wall and at targets 6. Perform a header with a foam ball 7. Head a foam ball tossed underhand by a partner 8. Illustrate good sportsmanship during partner and small group activities 9. Explain what good sportsmanship OCTOBER Educational Movement and Rhythms 1. Jumping for height 2. Jumping for distance 3. Jumping from a height 4. Perform basic locomotor skills to the beat of a drum and recorded music 5. Identify "even" and "uneven" time 6. Swinging,bending, pushing, pulling, stretching, turning, twisting and rocking 7. Perform simple combination movements (ex. jog 5, skip 5)

2 NOVEMBER 1. Keep balloon in the air with various body parts. Simulate soccer and volleyball skills. 2. Contact balloon at different levels with varying degrees of force 3. Hit from various body positions- kneeling, sitting and lying 4. Use a foam paddle to control the balloon and play paddle ball with a partner 5. Perform soccer and volleyball passes cooperatively with a partner 6. Tap balloon up- perform stunt- and keep balloon from touching the ground 7. Repeat above skill and use equipment to perform stunt ( Ex. Pick up a hoop and pass it around the balloon 8. Keep balloon in the air while holding hands with 1 or more partners Long Rope Jumping 1. Ocean waves 2. Snake jump 3. Mountain climber 4. Ski jumper 5. Jump the shot 6. Technique of turning 7. Technique of long rope jumping 8. Blue bells 9. Jumping jingles DECEMBER 1. Toss and catch with two hands 2. Toss and catch with same hand 3. Toss from one hand to the other 4. Toss- perform simple stunt- catch 5. Toss and catch with different body parts 6. Toss- progressively count higher-catch 7. Toss-touch different body parts- catch 8. Toss and catch at different levels and with feet off the ground 9. Two scarf juggling 10. Introduce three scarf juggling (2nd grade) Perform locomotor skills and exercises while holding and waving the scarf

Execute activities with small manipulative objects ( ball shake, popcorn and critter shake)

4 FEBRUARY 1. Movement challenges with hoops as floor targets ( See Dynamic Physical Education by Dauer and Pangrazi p. 283 for a detailed description) 2. Hula hoop using various parts of your body 3. Spin the hoop like a top and perform movement and academic challenges before it falls to the floor (ex. perform 5 jumping jacks, count by 2's to 20) 4. Jump and hop through a hoop held at various heights and angles 5. Roll your hoop and perform locomotor skills along side it 6. Toss and catch hoop with your hand and arm 7. Jump rope with your hoop 8. Roll the hoop back and forth with a partner 1. Controlled rolling and handling in space 2. Rolling around body parts 3. Rolling back and forth with a partner 4. Target rolling challenges 5. Two-handed toss and catch in place 6. Toss-perform movement challenge-catch (ex. toss-make a half turn-catch) 7. Partner passing and catching (underhand and overhand catches) 8. Toss and catch while moving 9. Dribbling in place and while moving (begin with 2 hands and progress to 1 hand) 10. Shooting at an 8 foot basket or large barrel MARCH 1. How to hold the ball. Demonstrate that the two middle fingers and thumb hold the ball. 2. Arm swing: students do the Push-Relax motion to develop a natural free swing 3. Release: roll ball to partner from the kneeling position and use clock for the correct finger position ( 4 and 5 for right-handed bowlers and 7 and 8 for left-handed bowlers) 4. Follow through: practice the follow through using the cue words "Answer the phone" 5. One step delivery: step with your opposite foot as your arm swings forward 6. Advanced students will learn the four step approach: short, short, short, booowl

5 APRIL Stunts, Tumbling and Gymnastics 1. Execute the following individual stunts: jump turns, heel slap, heelclick, puppy dog run, lame dog walk, bear walk, elephant walk, crab walk, tightrope walk, one-leg balance, double knee balance, seat circle and balancing on 1,2,3...body parts 2. Execute the following skills cooperatively with a partner: wring the dishrag, twin walk, partner toe touch, get-up, partner pull-up, superman and beginning counter-balances 3. Perform the following tumblling skills: log roll, side roll, egg roll, forward shoulder roll, forward roll, and rocking horse. 4. Climbing Ropes: lower yourself from a stand to lying position, pullup from lying position, hang on rope using feet to grip rope for as long as you can, climb using the proper foot grip and hand over hand technique and swing and perform a two-foot landin 5. Foam Trapezoid: step to jump approach with two foot take-off, knee mount, forward jump, forward jump with a quarter and half turn, backward jump, forward jump and land in target taped on mat 6. Low Balance Beam: walk forward,sideward and backward, walk with beanbag balanced on your head, squat, stork stand, two foot pivot turn, dip walk 7. Parallel Bars: hang by hands below bars and travel forward, sideward and backward, hanging shapes, possum travel, possum pull-ups, inverted tuck and hang. MAY 1. Balance a beanbag on various parts of your body while stationary and while moving, repeat with two beanbags 2. Tossing to self in place and catch with two hands and one hand 3. Toss from one hand to the other 4. Toss, perform stunt or task, and catch ( ex. clap hands, touch various body parts) 5. Underhand tossing and catching with a partner and underhand tossing at a target 6. Overhand tossing and catching with a partner and overhand tossing at a target 7. Tossing two objects back and forth with a partner 8. Sliding and rolling objects back and forth with a partner and aiming for targets 9. Toss and catch while moving (vary with different locomotor skills) 10. Toss and catch while sitting and lying on the floor

Lollipop Paddle: handshake grip, balance beanbag on paddle, repeat above skill and move (vary direction and locomotor movement), balance-lift-catch beanbag with free hand, repeat above skills with a foam tennis ball, toss ball and hit it up, consecutive hits with the one bounce rule and no bounces, toss ball and hit it forward against the wall, dribble the ball with the paddle while stationary and while moving, hit a ball tossed by a partner, volley a yarn ball with a partner 2. Foam/plastic bat: proper grip, stance, and swing, techniques to help keep the batter from throwing the bat, batting off a tee, hit an underhand pitched ball
