Ohio State is playing in the Ice Breaker Tournament for the third time, after appearances in 1998 and The Buckeyes finished in their last nine games, with a loss to Minnesota in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals ending an eight-game unbeaten streak. Ohio State returns all but three letterwinners from the squad that ranked eighth in the NCAA in scoring offense, averaging 3.56 goals per game. THE ICE BREAKER This is the 20th year of the Ice Breaker Tournament, which marks the traditional start of the college hockey season. The event, which is sponsored by the Hockey Commissioners Association and managed by College Hockey Inc, includes teams from four conferences each year. Ohio State is making its third appearance in the tournament and is looking for its first win in tournament action. The Buckeyes played in the 1998 edition, coming off the first NCAA Frozen Four appearance in program history. The squad lost to Boston College in overtime 4-3 and then fell to the host Minnesota Golden Gophers in the consolation game by the same score. In 2004 the Buckeyes participated in the tournament held in Durham, N.H. Ohio State lost to the host New Hampshire Wildcats, 5-1, and then was defeated by St. Cloud State in the consolation game, 3-1. FOR OPENERS Ohio State is all-time in season openers, with a 6-3 loss to Bowling Green last year. This is just the second time in the last six years the Buckeyes are opening the season on the road. In , the Buckeyes began the year at Minnesota Duluth, dropping the opener but winning game two for a series split. IN EXHIBITION ACTION The Buckeyes began the year with an exhibition game Sunday, skating to a 9-2 win over Wilfrid Laurier in Value City Arena. The Buckeyes led 2-0 after the first period on goals from sophomore Dakota Joshua and extended the lead to 4-0 5:01 into the second, with John Wiitala scoring before Joshua finished his hat trick. A quick goal by WLU broke up the shutout but Wiitala and sophomore defenseman Tommy Parran scored before the end of the period for a 6-1 Buckeye lead. In the third Ohio State outscored the Golden Hawks, 3-1, with goals from senior Nick Schilkey, sophomore Mason Jobst and junior Janik Moser. Ohio State outshot Laurier 53-25, with senior goalies Christian Frey (12 saves) and Matt Tomkins (11 saves) splitting time in net for the Buckeyes and each allowing a goal. The Buckeyes were 2-for-5 on the power play and allowed on goal one five power play chances for WLU.
