3 History of the Rochester Americans & Buffalo Sabres Affiliation The Buffalo Sabres and the Rochester Americans enter their 28th year as affiliated partners during the season This relationship is currently the longest working relationship in professional hockey between an NHL club and its affiliate This season, the Amerks are entering their 51st season in the American Hockey League It was during the campaign that the two organizations first formed a professional hockey partnership Billy Inglis was the first head coach of the Amerks while partnered with the Sabres Future coaches would include Mike Keenan, Joe Crozier, Jim Schoenfeld, Don Lever, John Van Boxmeer, John Tortorella, Brian McCutcheon and Randy Cunneyworth Both Keenan (New York Rangers-1994) and Tortorella (Tampa Bay Lightning-2004) went on to coach NHL teams to Stanley Cup victories On April 10, 2006, Sabres Chief Operating Officer Daniel DiPofi and Amerks Owner/Partner and Chief Financial Officer Randll J Latona announced a one-year affiliation agreement In the last 27 seasons, the Amerks have captured three Calder Cup Championships (1983,1987 and 1996) and have advanced to six Calder Cup Finals Rochester has qualified for the playoffs in 23 of the last 27 seasons During the affiliation, the Amerks have compiled a record of in 2,160 regular season games Over that period, the team has captured nine regular season titles The campaign was a banner year for the organization With a record of (112 points), the Amerks captured the McGregor Kilpatrick Trophy (Overall Regular Season Points champion) and the Sam Pollock Trophy (North Division Champion) The team also captured many individual accolades as well Head Coach Randy Cunneyworth was named the AHL Coach of the Year (Louis Pieri Memorial Award); Chris Taylor was given the Fred T Hunt Award for sportsmanship and dedication to hockey; and Ryan Miller was given the Aldege Baz Bastin Award as the AHL s top goaltender Miller was also named an AHL First Team All-Star Forward Thomas Vanek was named to the AHL All-Rookie Team Miller and Vanek were joined by several other current Sabres on the Amerks roster that season, including Derek Roy, Jason Pominville, and Paul Gaustad Besides the Sabres, the Amerks have been affiliated with the Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, Vancouver Canucks and Florida Panthers over the past 50 seasons Rochester captured three Calder Cups during the 1960s (1965, 1966 and 1968) Jody Gage Vice President of Sports Operations & General Manager Jody Gage captured the hearts of the Rochester Americans fans many times throughout his 11-season hockey career with the Amerks and wore the crest with great pride during that time Gage now handles a different role with the Amerks, Knighthawks and Rattlers, one of Vice President of Sports Operations & General Manager, and has experienced much of the same success in the front office that many witnessed on the ice He became a Sabres employee in May 2003 to help facilitate player personnel moves between Buffalo and Rochester In just 11 years, Gage has seen seven teams reach the finals (three hockey, four lacrosse) The Amerks advanced to the Calder Cup Finals in 1999 and 2000 while the K-Hawks reached the National Lacrosse League Finals in 1999, 2000 and 2003, and won the 1997 title In , Gage was also the Amerks Assistant General Manager when they won the 1996 Calder Cup In , the AHL recognized Gage for his efforts as he was awarded the James C Hendy Award as the league s outstanding executive Gage assembled a team that won both the AHL Empire Division Championship and the Western Conference Championship and earned a berth in the 1999 Calder Cup Finals In , the Amerks set a franchise record for points in one season with 112 In 2001, Gage became the first general manager of the Rochester Rattlers of Major League Lacrosse The field lacrosse team has advanced to the MLL Semifinals in 2001, 2004 and 2005 Because his name is synonymous with AHL stardom, Gage was able to acquaint himself quickly with his peers off the ice and away from the field, but it didn t take long for him to earn a reputation as a well-respected, savvy hockey general manager In his first season, the Amerks won their first division title since , making Gage the first general manager in team history to win a division title in his inaugural season Gage knows a thing or two about success and championships, having been involved with three Calder Cup champions during his pro career He was a member of the Adirondack Red Wings Calder Cup team in , the Amerks squad in and was Rochester s Assistant GM when the Amerks secured their sixth Calder Cup in , having retired during the season due to lingering knee ailments Originally a third-round draft selection (45th overall) of the Detroit Red Wings in the 1979 NHL Entry Draft, the Toronto native spent six seasons in the Detroit organization before signing a free agent contract with the Buffalo Sabres on July 31, 1985 Gage would spend the rest of his career in the Sabres and Amerks organization, signing his final contract with the Amerks on August 23, 1995, just a few months after Steve Donner purchased the Rochester club from Buffalo Dubbed Mr Amerk, Gage finished as the Amerks all-time leader in goals, assists, points and games played He holds the Amerks record for game-winning goals in one season (9, ) and goals/points by a right wing in one season (60/104, ) Gage is one of just three players to record 500 career AHL goals and 1,000 career AHL assists, and his 17 AHL seasons tie him for third in league history Some of his other AHL accolades include the AHL MVP award and a berth on the First Team All-Star squad that season, AHL First Team All-Star honors following the and

4 TM Jody Gage (Continued) seasons, a place on the AHL s All-Time Team in as chosen by the media - and selection as the US Team Captain for the 1995 AHL All-Star Game Gage also holds AHL records for the two fastest short-handed goals in one game (8 seconds, 3/25/89), the most 40+ goal seasons (7) and the most playoff goals (51) Gage (born 11/29/59) resides in Chili with his wife Charlotte and his two children, daughter Stefanie and son Ryan When he can find the time, Gage is an avid and accomplished golfer He also enjoys spending time with his family Randy Cunneyworth Rochester Americans Head Coach Randy Cunneyworth enters his seventh season as the head coach of the Rochester Americans, where he has guided the team to berths in the American Hockey League Playoffs in five of his first six seasons behind the bench Last season, Cunnyworth led the Amerks to a record and became just the third coach in franchise history to reach the 200-win plateau In five seasons with Rochester, Cunneyworth has a record of (6 shootout losses) His 234 career victories are the third most in Amerks history, behind only John Van Boxmeer and Joe Crozier He had a stellar rookie campaign behind the Amerks bench in , registering a record With 104 points, Rochester won its third-straight division and Western Conference regular-season titles The 26th head coach in the history of the storied hockey franchise, Cunneyworth joined the coaching ranks Sept 8, 2000 Prior to his coaching career, the 43-year-old Cunneyworth played 20 seasons of professional hockey and spent his last two years with the Amerks as a left winger/assistant coach During that stint with Rochester ( to ), the Amerks were the Empire Division and Western Conference regular season and playoff champions The Amerks reached the Calder Cup Finals both seasons He started his professional playing career in Rochester in Cunneyworth played parts of seven seasons with the Amerks, earning 239 points ( ) He currently ranks 14th in games played (366) and 19th in goals on the Amerks list of all-time leaders The native of Etobicoke, Ontario, was a member of the Amerks Calder Cup winning team, before moving to the NHL in Cunneyworth played 16 seasons in the NHL with the Buffalo Sabres, Pittsburgh Penguins, Winnipeg Jets, Hartford Whalers, Chicago Blackhawks and the Ottawa Senators In 866 NHL games, he collected 189 goals and 225 assists for 414 points In 35 career games with Buffalo, Cunneyworth registered four goals and six assists During the season, he appeared in his first Stanley Cup Final with the Sabres against the Dallas Stars, playing three games He also played for the Amerks against the Providence Bruins in the 1999 Calder Cup He scored a goal on Feb 11, 1999, his first goal as a Sabre since Nov 15, 1981 the longest span in NHL history between goals scored by a player for one team The following season, he registered eight goals and 16 assists for 24 points in 52 games for the Amerks before suffering a season-ending knee injury He was named the captain for Team Canada in the 2000 Kodak AHL All-Star Game held in Rochester Cunneyworth passed the 100-goal plateau as an Amerk during the season, scoring his 100th and 101st goals in a 5-0 win over the Saint John Flames Feb 16, 2000 Cunneyworth was the recipient of the Fred T Hunt Memorial Award, which is voted upon by the AHL Broadcasters and Writers Association and honors the player who best exemplifies the qualities of sportsmanship, determination and dedication to hockey He was also awarded the Amerks Booster Club Most Popular Player Award for In , Cunneyworth was named AHL Coach of the Year as he received the Louis Pieri Memorial Award In 20 years of pro hockey, he played in 1,234 games and registered 290 goals, 363 assists and 1,851 penalty minutes He resides in Pittsford, NY, with his wife, Jenny, and two sons, Gregory and Cameron Moe Mantha Assistant Coach Moe Mantha brings 12 years of coaching and 12 years of National Hockey League playing experience to Amerks bench this season Mantha began his coaching career with the Hershey Bears in as an assistant He got his first head coaching position in with the Columbus Chill of the ECHL, leading the Chill to a record and a berth in the ECHL Playoffs The following year, he coached Columbus to a mark and a second consecutive appearance in the postseason During the next four seasons he was the head coach of the Anaheim Mighty Ducks AHL team, working with the Baltimore Bandits ( ) and the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks ( ) Following the season, Mantha joined USA Hockey's National Team Development Program He left the national team in 2005 to become the general manager/head coach of the Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League Mantha was selected by the Winnipeg Jets in the second round (23rd overall) of the 1980 NHL Entry Draft During his career, he played in 656 games and made stops in Winnipeg, Pittsburgh, Edmonton, Minnesota and Philadelphia He ended his NHL playing career following the season after totaling 370 points (81+289) During four of his seasons in the NHL, Mantha and Cunneyworth were teammates The duo played together with the Pittsburgh Penguins ( ) and the Winnipeg Jets ( ) 230
