2 January 25, 2016 Dear Friends and Fellow Cattlemen, Last year s letter of greeting from Barker Cattle Company started with a reference to the record cattle prices and discussing what a special time it was to be in the cattle business. This year the beef prices have certainly taken a hit but we still love the cattle business and extend a warm greeting to everyone. The goals of our organization are simple and straight forward. We pledge ourselves to a sound and progressive breeding program. We are keenly dedicated to keeping our birth weight and calving ease standards at an acceptable level for both ourselves and our customers the commercial and seed stock producers of the industry. We emphasize soundness in our cattle so that they will quickly acclimate and remain sound as they work on the ranches of Western America. We select our herd sires and the bulls we use in our artificial insemination program for easy fleshing, gain ability, easy calving and milking ability commensurate with the Western Environment. We believe EPD S on each individual should be studied and used in bull and female selection along with 50K DNA testing data where available. We understand and follow sound nutritional guidelines in an effort to maximize the genetic base of our livestock. By sale day all bulls will have been trich tested, semen tested, scrotal measured, and ear notched indicating they are BVD free. We follow a strict animal health program which includes deworming both cows and calves twice a year. We strive to stay conversant with the most up to date cattle technology and incorporate the new developments in our operation. One of the newest technologies is the 50K DNA testing program referred to in the previous paragraph. DNA testing is the next step in the selection progression on unproven animals to produce better calves and more productive cows. We have 50K DNA tested our Angus bulls the past two years and many of you have studied the resultant data and used it in making your bull selections. We understand the advantage of having the bull and female EPD s enhanced through DNA testing and are passing that advantage on to our customers. We offer purebred seed stock cattle in the Angus and Simmental breeds. We also believe strongly in taking advantage of cross breeding. Consequently along with the purebred cattle we offer a very strong group of Sim-Angus bulls as well as a number of High Performance Cross Bred Bulls. Barker Cattle Company participates in two promotional programs: (1) We are members of Allied Genetics. If producers, using Barker bulls, market their calves on the Superior Auction and will alert us of the day and place, our Allied representatives will be there to bid on your calves and either buy them or help out by bumping the price a few cents. (2) When producers living in Raft River or Oakley High School areas buy Barker bulls 1% of the purchase price is given to their respective FFA Chapter for scholarship funds or other needs of the Chapter. 4 Barker Cattle 2016 SALE INFORMATION First Breeding Season Guarantee: All bulls selling for $2500 or more are guaranteed for the first breeding season. A breeding season is defined as the 90 day period following the first turnout of the bull. If a replacement bull is available, he will be provided or if the buyer prefers, credit toward one bull will be given in the following sale, less salvage value of the injured bull. All injured bulls must be diagnosed by a veterinarian. Please notify us as soon as possible should injury occur and prior to the injured bull being sold for salvage. Sight Unseen Guarantee/Absentee Bidding: We realize it can be difficult for many of you to get away in the spring and we provide the following service to assist you. A 100% satisfaction guarantee for cattle purchased in your absence is offered if a designated representative of Barker Cattle Company makes the purchase for you. Delivery: Free delivery on any bull to a central point up to 300 miles. Free delivery on 5 or more bulls purchased up to 500 miles to a central point. All other deliveries made at cost. All cattle will be delivered at the buyer's risk and within a reasonable length of time after the sale. Females delivered at cost. 7 Barker Cattle 2016 CALVING EASE Calving Ease & Heifer Bulls Barker Cattle Company is very serious about providing our customers with bulls possessing adequate calving ease credentials. We have learned that calving ease is not an exact science where a given mating always brings guaranteed results. We have also learned however that EPD s, blood line trends, and low birth weights can be predictive and when used collectively can greatly assist the breeder in his bull selection. We have talked with all the breed associations we affiliate with and have asked them what their standards are to qualify a bull as a heifer bull. Most of the breeds will not discuss a set of standards with you. To summarize the collective answers we received, we must conclude that anything under breed average is generally considered qualifying as Calving Ease. We think most seed stock breeders are hesitant to use the heifer bull designation too loosely. We know we certainly are. We would strongly suggest that when EPD s are considered, a positive preferably in the +5 range and above is very desirable and a low EPD in the +2.5 range and below, even into the negative range, should be what a bull buyer looks for if calving ease is important to him/her. Also, when selecting a calving ease bull, we suggest the birth weight ought to be in the low 80 s and preferably 80 pounds or below. Birth weight has so many causative variables that it should not be used as the sole calving ease determinate by itself. The new 50 K testing serves as a great qualifier regarding calving ease and this data is given in percentiles. This data will be available on all PB Angus bulls on sale day as a supplement sheet and their HD50 K enhanced test results are reflected in the catalog EPD s. 4 Star Rating used for calving ease. 4 stars=top calving ease.
