As in any industry, times are changing and new bulls are emerging. There is one bull that is outbreeding these legends, and with his first offspring no less. His name is Variani.

It was a tough and competitive environment to secure the right bull.

He has turned out to be one of our best buys to date. On arrival, it was evident that Variani was different. He is a dark featured Western Sable bull with an incredible build.

The breeding bulls of yesteryear such as Piet (Piet Warren), Madala (Pymat), Nike (Thaba Tholo), Big Boy (Dries Visser) and Rapella (Crown Game Breeders) have formed exceptional stud lines within the Sable breeding industry. What differentiates these bulls from the rest is their prepotency and notably, their ability to produce 50 sons. These bulls have become legends of their time and will form part of almost all future great breeding bulls genetic make up. But they have reached, or are nearing the end of their breeding days. As in any industry, times are changing and new bulls are emerging. There is one bull that is outbreeding these legends, and with his first offspring no less. His name is Variani. In 2012, Tembani acquired a remarkable Sable bull from Piet Warren on his 50 Celebration Auction. The auction was dominated by the new SA record bull, Charlie, who sold for R12.2 million. It was a tough and competitive environment to secure the right bull. By then, had been selecting top quality sable since 1996 and had formed incredible female stock that were ready for a superior bull. We were fortunate to purchase Variani on that day. He has turned out to be one of our best buys to date. On arrival, it was evident that Variani was different. He is a dark featured Western Sable bull with an incredible build. We, at, feel strongly that this bull has astounding similarities to the Giant Sable of old. Hence the name, Variani: from Giant Sable, or Hippotragus niger variani. He started breeding with Tembani s top quality stock at 4 years old in 2012, measuring 43. In 2018 (at the age of 9 years and 1 month) he measured 48 18, whilst already breeding. It is obvious to the naked eye that Variani s first sons are massive. They have broken all our records at weaning age and our expectations are only growing. His progeny s stats are unheard of in the Sable breeding industry (see Kangara, Gamula, Molungu and E88 page right). The likelihood of these three bulls becoming some of the biggest Rowland Ward Sable bulls in South Africa is highly probable. Kangara is already world number two based on his current SCI score of according to the SCI book of records. These bulls have volume through their thick bases and all measure beyond the standard 9 (they are all between ). And to think, these stats have been gathered from Variani s very first offspring. It is early days for Variani as his oldest sons have yet to reach maturity and are still growing fast, but it is evident that he is an astute breeder with exceptional prepotency and genetic vibrance. The name Variani will become well known among game breeders and his genetics will be sought after by breeders looking to become part of the future of Sable in South Africa.
