6 Message from the WJCB At an Officers meeting of the Bureau yesterday, it was unanimously agreed that the Bureau wishes to express its concerns and thoughts for all Jersey breeders and their families during this very difficult time in South Africa s economy. Albert Goosen After a year as part of the Jersey SA family, the paths of Jersey SA and Albert Goosen have separated. We would like to wish him the best for his future endeavours. Young bulls The Breed Improvement Committee of Jersey SA chooses out of every BLUP analyses the top local bred bulls out of the births submitted for that specific period. These bulls are then Genomically tested by jersey SA, and the shortlist of bull are supplied to all semen companies should they be interested in obtaining one of these bulls. 8 DNA Local bulls Jersey SA would like to request all our breeders to have all your bulls that would like registered, DNA tested. We aim to start building a data basis to help ease the process of parentage verification, as well adding value to the Jersey bull market. Board of Examiners A new Board of Examiners have been appointed during the last council meeting. They are Danie Giliomee, Andrew Masterson, Pierre Human and Cobus Behrens representing the council of Jersey SA. The Board of Examiners have the duties of promoting judges, as well as handling any disputes that may arise during a show. Parentage verification The Animal Improvement Act of South Africa obligates these tests once a year and it is also a standard method of studbook organizations to prove the accuracy of their records, and not because the word of the breeders is not trusted. Herds nominated will receive a letter from SA Studbook stating the nominated 5 animals required for testing as well as 2 alternatives. We ask that all breeders nominated help us finalizing the process as quickly as possible. Identification marks of animals Please note that the official manner of applying identification marks to registered animals, is by way of tattooing in the ear. The constitution of Jersey SA specifies the manner as follow: A calf has to be tattooed within 30 days of being born. The year number and following numbers are tattooed in the left ear. In the right ear comes the herd designation marks allocated to your herd.

Danie Giliomee was the judge for this event, and a nice crowd came to watch the youth show and the adult show. Everyone enjoyed the beautiful area, good wine and food.
