2012 Queensland TOUR OF OZBREED S PLANTS Landscape projects using Ozbreed s plants: Right plant, right place. Successful landscape projects Ozbreed s trial gardens Ph: Fax: info@ozbreed.com.au For technical specification information, contact: Nathan Layt nathanlayt@ozbreed.com.au Ph:
Brisbane Little Jess Dianella caerulea DCMP01 PBR Little Jess (left) is a star plant in Queensland. Its ability to cope with humidity, its low height and its low maintenance are some of the many reasons why this is one of the best landscape Dianellas for Queensland. Empire (right) in a front yard at Brisbane. An excellent choice for a drought tolerant, low maintenance, deep green and beautiful lawn. Empire needs less mowing than other varieties, stays much shorter when unmown and only needs two fertiliser applications per year. Empire Zoysia japonica SS500 PBR Little Jess Dianella caerulea DCMP01 PBR Little Jess (left) performing as a tough roadside plant with no maintenance. This is a very versatile, low growing plant - great for roadsides, median strips and borders.
Brisbane Sapphire Stenotaphrum secundatum B12 PBR Sapphire (above) at the Queensland State Tennis Centre in Tennyson. High performance, fine textured and proven to be number 1 in shade by research (Department of Primary Industries and HAL research). Shara Lomandra fluviatilis ABU7 PBR Mundi Westringia fruticosa WES05 PBR Shara (above) at the Queensland State Tennis Centre after the 2011 floods. A true testament to its humidity and Phytopthora tolerance. Mundi (above) at the Queensland State Tennis Centre. Still keeping its low growing, tidy and clean foliage with no trimming.
Coolangatta Empire Zoysia japonica SS500 PBR Empire Zoysia japonica SS500 PBR Empire (left & above) proving its salt tolerance right on the beach. This is a great option for large public areas, because Empire needs 3 times less mowing than Kikuyu, half as much as Couch and 30% less mowing than Buffalo varieties. Paradise Point Katie Belles (left) displaying beautiful, clean green foliage in this street planting. It will have masses of beautiful yellow perfumed flowers from September to November. Katie Belles Lomandra hystrix LHBYF PBR
Paradise Point Tropicbelle Lomandra hystrix LHCOM PBR Tropicbelle (above) has a great uniform, compact size that makes it great for planter boxes and mass plantings. It only reaches 70cm high, which is 30% smaller than common Lomandra hystrix. Katie Belles Lomandra hystrix LHBYF PBR King Alfred Dianella caerulea JOHN316 PBR Katie Belles (left) is performing quite well in this very shady position, even though it is recommended that Katie Belles should be planted in full sun to partly shady positions. King Alfred (above) is our best erosion control plant. It can handle periodic wet feet, heat and humidity. Cutting King Alfred back every 1-2 years is recommended to encourage new growth.
Paradise Point Little Jess (right) is providing a reliable, tough and compact Dianella for this roadside border planting. An excellent low maintenance landscape plant. Little Jess Dianella caerulea DCMP01 PBR Shara Lomandra fluviatilis ABU7 PBR Shara (left) is a great alternative to Lomandra Tanika for humid Queensland. It is very drought, frost and Phytopthora tolerant. Gold Coast Katie Belles Lomandra hystrix LHBYF PBR Katie Belles Lomandra hystrix LHBYF PBR Katie Belles (above) thriving in Gold Coast conditions.
Noosa Nara Zoysia macrantha MAC03 PBR Nara (left) at the Elysium development in Noosa. This is proving to be a popular fine textured, low maintenance native turf. It is very fast establishing and is extremely drought tolerant. Nara has had millions of years to adapt and grow in our hot, dry and humid climates. Nara (right) on a turf farm in Noosa. Everyone is loving this new all purpose native turf, especially the native wildlife. Nara Zoysia macrantha MAC03 PBR Cooroy & Maroochydore Shara Lomandra fluviatilis ABU7 PBR Empire Zoysia japonica SS500 PBR Shara (above) looking great in this group planting at Cooroy. Tough, compact and low growing. Empire (above) at the Maroochydore library. This tough, low maintenance Zoysia has been here for over 5 years.
Whitsundays Sapphire Stenotaphrum secundatum B12 PBR Sapphire (above & below) is doing amazingly well considering the environment. Sapphire is not considered a salt tolerant, coastal grass, yet it is performing well - even when growing on pure sand (middle right & bottom left). Sapphire Stenotaphrum secundatum B12 PBR Sapphire Stenotaphrum secundatum B12 PBR Sapphire on pure sand Sapphire Stenotaphrum secundatum B12 PBR Sapphire Stenotaphrum secundatum B12 PBR Sapphire on pure sand
Ozbreed s Trial Gardens Ozbreed s Trial Gardens - Western Sydney, NSW (temperature extreme site; -6 c to 45 c; humid or very dry, sometimes very wet) All of our plants are tested here before they go out to the public. If a plant won t work in our gardens, they won t go out to the public. If they do work, they go out for further regional testing. Aussie Box (right) is a great native alternative to exotic box plants. It can be pruned as a low hedge or kept unpruned in its natural ball shape. Blue Gem Westringia WES03 PBR Ozbreed Aussie Box Westringia WES02 PBR Blue Gem Westringia WES03 PBR Common Westringia flower Ozbreed Aussie Box Westringia WES02 PBR Blue Gem Blue Gem (left) is one of the best flowering Westringias available. It has vivid, almost fluorescent flowers (see comparison photo on left). Blue Gem has a bushy growth habit that responds well to pruning. Mundi (below) has been in the Ozbreed gardens for 4 years now. It s perfect as a hedge that can be pruned into any low growing shape, or it can be left unpruned without messy foliage. Mundi Westringia fruticosa WES05 PBR Mundi Westringia fruticosa WES05 PBR
Ozbreed s Trial Gardens Red Alert Callisteon viminalis CC19 PBR Flirt Nandina domestica MURASAKI PBR Flirt (above) is the only ground cover form of Nandina that has red new growth foliage in spring, summer and autumn. It will go red in winter in colder regions of Australia. Blush (below) is a compact Nandina with red new growth foliage in the warmer months and a deep red in the cooler months. Blush is drought and frost tolerant. Grey Box Westringia fruticosa WES04 PBR Blush Nandina domestica AKA PBR Red Alert (top left) is a red foliage hedging plant with around 4 months of vivid red new growth. It is a good drought tolerant, native alternative to Photinia. This Grey Box (above) is an extremely compact Westringia that has been pruned into a very low formal hedge. Tough Grey Box reaches 45cm unpruned in its natural ball shape. Meema (right) has been here for 3 years and is still proving to be a tidy Hardenbergia. It is longer lived and flowers for a month longer than other types. More flowers, cleaner foliage. Meema Hardenbergia violacea HB1 PBR
Ozbreed s Trial Gardens Yalba (left) has masses of amazing feathery plumes for 4-5 months around April to October if it is trimmed or slashed yearly from February to March. A great erosion control native with a consitent height. Yalba Imperata cylindrica ICL200 PBR Isabella (right) is the perfect lawn alternative or border. It only needs to be mown once a year around July (see above). Isabella has been mown at this site for 4 years and is still performing as a beautiful ground cover. Isabella Liriope muscari LIRF PBR Shara (right) is great for humid landscapes. It is compact, mass flowering and works all over Australia. Pennstripe (far right) is a great variegated native. It is a lower growing, low seeding Pennisetum that is excellent for gardens and roadsides alike. Shara Lomandra fluviatilis ABU7 PBR Pennstripe Pennisetum alopecuroides PAV300 PBR
Ozbreed s Trial Gardens Nara (left) has performed extremely well here at our trial gardens for over 3 years. Landscape architects and designers who visited at last years Ozbreed field day (right) couldn t believe a grass so beautiful could be native. Nara Zoysia macrantha MAC03 PBR Most functional landscape plants Scarlet Flame Callistemon viminalis CC19 PBR Purple Fusion Scaevola humilis PFS100 PBR Slim Callistemon viminalis CV01 PBR Naringa Westringia WES01 PBR Scarlet Flame (top left) is a dense, very compact Callistemon that makes a great hedge. It has rustic red new growth foliage, followed by masses of beautiful flowers. Purple Fusion (top right) is a true ground cover form of Scaevola that often flowers for about 365 days a year. Naringa (left) is the best hedging Westringia and is very fast establishing. It only needs pruning every 2 years to keep tidy. Slim (above) has a unique slimline growth habit, making it the perfect Callistemon for tight planting areas.
