2 Blackrose Angus Production Sale Blackrose Angus Ranch Robert & Gloriann Spencer or Rd 719 Culbertson, NE Reid Spencer Saturday, March 30, p.m. CST Tri-State Livestock McCook, NE Complimentary lunch at noon General Information Guarantee All bulls selling for $3,000 or more are guaranteed against breeding injury until the end of the first breeding season, or September 30, If a replacement bull is available, he will be provided, or if the buyer prefers, credit will be given in the following year s sale. (Credit will be the purchase price minus a $1,500 deductable minus the salvage value. Purchaser is responsible for injured bull until salvage. Credit is for one replacement per claim.) ex. $5,000 purchase price -$1,500 deductible - $600 salvage $0.60/#) = $2,900 Credit Notification as soon as possible should injury occur and prior to the injured bull being sold for salvage is necessary. This is not a guarantee against death. Registration Papers All bulls are eligible for registry and will be registered and transferred to the buyer if desired for a $100 fee upon request. Pedigrees represent Sire and Dam, then maternal and paternal grandsires. Delivery - Boarding We have always worked with anyone needing bulls taken home until breeding season and delivery is available to anyone, at our convenience. This year the ultrasound data was collected by Keith Rudeen of Elm Creek, Nebraska. ( ) This score corresponds to graded carcass scores in a packing house, 4-5 Select, 5-6 Low Choice, 6-7 CAB Average, 8+ Prime. To convert steer to bull add one whole score. Keith calculated REA based on ultrasound muscle depth. We publish backfat because of the relationship of external fat to internal fat. The more marbling (internal fat) compared to external fat is great in these bulls. Scrotal measurements and ultrasound data available sale day. Some of the younger bulls, mainly March calves and later February will need to be fertility tested in April, which we do and deliver when needed. They will be guaranteed breeders at that time. All other bulls have passed fertility and breeding soundness exams by Dr. Wayne Watkins, Red Willow Animal Clinic. Sale broadcast on

3 Going Back to Get Ahead When you think you ve seen it all or wonder what more can there be to learn in this business, I am humbled by the fact I have to keep learning and applying it to stay ahead. In my lifetime, cattle evaluation has gone from totally live to almost totally by the numbers that represent each phenotype. Man has evolved from a breeder of cattle to a producer of numbers. Today, numbers establish value and value drives selection pressure. Using Top Dollar Angus as an example (the top 25% growth and carcass criteria) we have directed pressure for more growth and carcass because the top 25% will continually be moving higher. Mans quest for more and more of any trait has historically neglected other traits. The biological function of the cow is still the same, nutrients go in one end and products come out the other. Simply, man sets a value for each of those functions and depending on the pressure applied, changes the cow over time. Man has taken the cow from belt buckle height to eye height and then moderated back somewhere in between in my lifetime. My biggest concern is knowing when you ve gone too far. In man s infinite wisdom he has taken a cow capable of weaning 60% of her body weight, and by applying enough selection pressure for growth and carcass, regressed a cow only capable of around 30%. Wow! Cattlemen that has got to be the biggest OH SHIT moment in my life. And we wonder why we can t make enough money. Input costs have greatly risen since that 60% cow era. More concerning is the driving forces and most Seedstock Salesmen still have the pedal to the metal taking you with them. We saw things with daughters of the last three growth bulls we had used. To help explain why our program has changed, I d like to share data Reid compiled on the Upward daughters up to this year. In many ways Upward was a great bull producing beautiful progeny, very marketable with a lot of growth. We don t regret having used him, but a bull with that much growth and with that kind of growth curve has left us with some big mature daughters. Their data shows that out of 122 upward daughters developed for breeding from only 34 are still here (28%). 7% of the total calve in the first cycle while the remaining 93% have either lost a cycle or have been open. Keep in mind this is under our low-input management. The daughters and granddaughters of Upward that are left here have been very good producers. The two growth bulls that followed Upward, one has zero daughters. As a breeder this data has shown us the need to change our genetics to fit our resources. We have seen very positive changes including a reduction in cow weights while maintaining our weaning weights. We have seen a significant reduction in breed back time, probably more from a cow fitting her environment than a change in fertility. We feel that any growth above what creates a sustainable cow size is only captured by those who own your calves after weaning. Our data suggest using sires that make your cow herd sustainable and to maximize profitability in a calf crop via the use of a terminal sire. So, consider these numbers from the 2019 Select Sire Directory pg ,660# cows weaning 29% of their body weight equals 488#. So, what size cow would a cow weaning 50% be to wean 488#? (488#/.50 = 976#). Using their data, a cow 684# heavier than another cow (1660# - 976# = 684#) would eat approximately 3,642# more dry matter per year. Just using dry hay at $0.08/# that would be a (3642# x.08 = $291) additional feed cost. At today s weigh-up prices, 684# at $.50 = $342 premium over the smaller cow. I can finally see why so many want that big cow, she beats the smalls cow by $342 one time. But for every year that smaller cow is in production, she ll be saving you $291 every year. Focus on the realities and the limitations of your cattle operation, then build a herd that can give you the highest return on your investment. 1

4 CED Calving Ease Direct, is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers. Calving Ease Direct scores on the sale bulls is an average of the 3 Sires, this will give the closest reference. BW Birth Weight, expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires. WW Weaning Weight, expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of another sire s. Milk Maternal Milk, is a predictor of a sire s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability. YW Yearling Weight, expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. MW Mature Weight, expressed in pounds, is a predictor of the difference in mature weight of daughters of a sire compared to the daughters of other sires. The lower the MW, the more moderate the daughters will be. CW Carcass Weight, expressed in pounds is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of sire s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Marb Represented in actual marbling scores from Ultrasound. BF Represented in actual fat thickness, expressed in inches. REA Represented in actual rib eye area. Scrotal Posted are actual scrotal measurements taken by Dr. T.W. Watkins, D.V.M. of Red Willow Animal Clinic. (will be updated the day of the sale) Cow Age Represents the age of the cow at the time the calf was being raised. Cow BCS - Signifies what Condition Score the cow was the day her calf was weaned, expresses fleshing ability while lactating. % Calf Weaned Represents the percentage of calf weaned off at weaning, we are selecting for a higher percentage. Calving Interval Listed are the days in which the cow calved in , coming 3-year-olds will be marked with a due to not calving, although some coming 3 s will show a calving interval number due to already calving in 2019 before printing the catalog. This information is important for selecting future females that can calve every days. We use this as an indicator of fertility as most of these are bred artificially. Cow Energy Value ($EN) Expressed in dollar savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements 2 Data and Block Explanations as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy expenses). Components for computing the cow $EN savings difference include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size. Brand ID - The Bulls identification is hot-branded on the Right shoulder of Blackrose bulls (prefix Blackrose). We have found that our cattle last longer than the traditional green tattoo ink used when tattooing in the ear, a brand is permanent and is easily visible. Act BW Actual birthweights are listed. Same for YW (yearling weight) the lower the MW (mature weight) the smaller daughters produced will be the higher the CW (carcass weight) the greater the carcass weight the lower the Milk the less requirements the female will need to raise a calf, maintain her body condition and is the most important effect on her fertility

XXP & XP s progeny show excellent dispositions and his daughters all appear to be keepers. XP sires calves with length, depth and width built upon a moderate sized frame. They possess good feet, both hoof angle and heal depth that promote fluent movement in correlation to their structural integrity and soundness. The consistency you would expect from a 28.9% inbreeding coefficient sire. XP as a now coming 4-year-old shows fleshing ability, structural correctness and a high level of fertility with a strong breeding libido. We re calving his first daughters now; they re broody made females with sound structure and a feminine phenotype. Their udders are strongly attached with an ideal teat angle and size, along with their ideal mothering ability. He s been a spectacle to everyone who has laid eyes on him. We plan on displaying him at our Production Sale to allow customers to see what his sons will mature into. XP is a 15/16th brother to our 5522 grandson, X-Changer 5FE21. If you can t see what we mean, just believe in what we see. 33 PGS: Sinclair Emulation 5522 XP Sire: Sinclair X-Changer 5FE21 MGS: Sinclair Fortunate Son Dam: Blackrose 57 of 635 FS MGDS: Leachman Exacta Blackrose 819 of 57 XC DOB: 2/5/18 Act BW: 72 Adj WW: ( N/A ) ( ) ( ) In the cattle industry I think these years of dependence on numbers to breed cattle will be called the Oh Shit years. I m hearing and have used that expression more and more. That expression was heard often when the Curly Calf and Hydrocephalus genes were exposed. With the promotion and wide use of those carriers and irresponsible cattlemen were not reporting its occurrence it became a big Oh Shit. We are seeing a few more Oh Shits happening now with very widely used (promoted) AI sires that are leaving offspring with bad genes, ill-temperament, and poor structure (stifle, feet and legs). We used Sitz Upward 307R a lot with tremendous success. Beautiful progeny, highly marketable, with a lot of growth. Don t regret using him but a bull with +65WW, +123YW and +63CW left us some big mature daughters. They compiled this data here: 122 daughters developed for breeding from of the 122 are still here (28%). 7 of the 122 calved in the first cycle while the remaining 93% have either lost a cycle or come up open. Again, keep in mind this is under our management. Many dropped a cycle or more a year then were either sold open or were sold as late calvers. The daughters of Upward that are still here have been very good producers and the granddaughters out of our Upward sons have excelled. Upward with his growth and milk in our environment created an Oh Shit moment. This still does not convince me to change our management but instead change our genetics to fit our resources. Right or wrong we have used this example to change our direction to create a more sustainable cow herd. Any growth above what is sustainable in your herd is only captured by those who own your calves after weaning. I ll say it again and again, keeping daughters from bulls that meet the Top Dollar Angus criteria will be setting you up for an Oh Shit moment. CED BW ~WW ~YW MW CW ~Milk 11

Our memory of Quest and the reintroduction of him is because some of our best producing cows were Quest daughters. Our oldest Quest daughters that are still in production are 16 years old. Quest daughters have been moderate sized, excellent mothers with perfect udders. it has always amazed me the prepotency and the consistency of type Leachmans breed into their cattle. 19 The cost of looking good For those that remember Charlie Tuna (Sorry Charlie! ) you can maybe see what I m getting at here. Charlie always was coming off as something more that he was. Star-Kist rejected him because they wanted tuna that taste s good not tuna with good taste. That same play-on-words is what our industry has turned into. Its become a race to be like Charlie Tuna. Bigger numbers, heavier weights, more inputs, where will it end? More inputs will not work in the real cow-calf world but in the Seedstock Salesman world it has become accepted and justified as measuring the maximum potential of an animal. My point to this is who do you think pays the cost for these Seedstock Salesman to look good? You are right, you do and what did you get for that additional cost? How s that warm, fuzzy feeling working for you? Especially now that many Charlie Tuna operations are dispersing. Looking good is expensive and only sustainable if their customers keep paying for it. You don t really get more you just pay more for it. Truth is you really don t get as much for your money because seedstock raised in a maximum input management environment seldom work in the real world. I ve even heard it referred to as the Seedstock Marketing is a Conman s Paradise. The reason this topic stays on my mind is that so many times I ve thought; if I just had more money to keep every cow from failing. This is where the two types of Breeding Philosophies are separate. One whose cows are never stressed believes success is no cow failed, the other breeder in contrast believes success is when his cattle excel in an environment like that of which they will work in. the second breeder sets you up for success in the cattle business. The first breeding theory is not sustainable for you or them. Sorry Charlie. All Blackrose Angus Ranch promotional materials handled by Chrisman Cattle Services Thank You!

20 Blackrose Angus Ranch Robert & Gloriann Spencer Rd 719 Culbertson, NE Cattle need to be selected in a similar, or poor, environment to where they are going to produce. This is one of the reasons why conventional stud breeding in an artificial environment is such a farce. It is totally unprofessional, and to a larger degree dishonest, to breed and performance test cattle under artificial conditions and then sell breeding stock to the commercial producer under the pretense that they will make him more money. - Johann Zietsman; Man, Cattle and Veld
